Polaris Sportsman 500: Off-Road Conqueror

Polaris Sportsman 500 is a reliable utility vehicle introduced by the American company back in 2005. The powerful device gained wild popularity , which prompted the manufacturer to release several modifications of the Sportsman.

Line model range:

  • Polaris Sportsman 500. This is the basic version of the device, first released in 2005. The car can be called a real all-terrain vehicle; the ATV handles confidently in the forest, on rough terrain and in wetlands. Thanks to the powerful engine, the device can be used for both active recreation and work. One of the main features of the Sportsman is the automatic transmission and fuel gauge.
  • Polaris Sportsman 500 Touring. This is not just a workhorse, but a full-fledged touring ATV . After changes made by the manufacturer, the device acquired a more powerful engine (39 horsepower), a passenger seat and a more attractive design. The car performs well both on the highway and on rough terrain.
  • Polaris Sportsman 500 EFI. When developing the ATV, the manufacturer placed the main emphasis on power and safety. The new model has acquired a descent control system , disc brakes and an overheating indicator. An interesting solution was the installation of a winch with a traction force of 2500 pounds.

Polaris presented customers with three versions of the Sportsman - Polaris 500 6×6, Mossy Oak and 500 HO. The devices differed in fuel tank capacity, load capacity and equipment.

Specifications

In addition to an attractive design, the utility device boasts good characteristics. The developers installed a reliable four-stroke engine on the car, with a displacement of 499 cc. Thanks to its high power ( 38 horsepower ), the equipment has earned recognition not only among hunters and fishermen, but also among fans of tourism.

Device characteristics:

  • Start type – electric starter.
  • The engine cooling system is liquid.
  • Drive type – full.
  • Gearbox – variator.
  • Brakes – disc (front and rear).
  • Suspension type – independent, with a travel of 170 mm (front) and 241 mm (rear).
  • Load capacity of the luggage racks is 40.9 kg (front) and 81.8 kg (rear).
  • The dry weight of the equipment is 307 kg.
  • Gas tank capacity – 18 l. New versions of the device have a tank capacity of 15.5 liters.

The Polaris Sportsman 500 ATV is not only safe, but also economical. The car consumes only 10-12 liters of gasoline per 100 km. Naturally, consumption depends on driving style and route. When driving on difficult roads (wetlands or mud), fuel consumption increases to 14 liters.

Price

The cost of a Polaris SPORTSMAN TOURING 500 ATV from an official dealer and without mileage now varies from 330 thousand rubles to 380 thousand Russian rubles. The final cost, as a rule, is influenced by the year of production and equipment, which often includes camouflage coloring in addition to additional equipment.

For used equipment, the current price ranges from 250 thousand rubles to 325 thousand Russian rubles. In this case, in addition to the year of production, the price may vary depending on the mileage and technical condition.

Comparison with competitors

One of the main competitors of the Polaris 500 ATV is BRP Outlander L570 X MR . The Canadian car beats the American in almost everything. The Outlander is equipped with a more powerful engine; under the hood of this predator hides as much as 48 horsepower. Fans of SUVs will also be impressed by the design of the L570. If the Sportsman is more reminiscent of sports equipment, then the appearance of the Canadian simply screams of power and cross-country ability.

However, in terms of price, Polaris technology definitely wins. A new Sportsman costs between 380-450 thousand rubles, depending on the modification and year of manufacture. For a fresh Outlander, with full equipment, you will have to pay 978 thousand rubles.

Domestic manufacturers did not stand aside either , or rather, the Stealth company, which presented the ATV 800GT ATV. The Russian utility vehicle is distinguished by its significant carrying capacity and power. In cross-country ability, the Stealth is inferior to the Sportsman, but wins in price. For a fully equipped AVT 800GT you will have to pay only 400 thousand rubles.

A serious opponent for the Polaris Sportsman 500 ATV was the Honda TRX 500 FA . Technically, both cars are very similar, so the only question is the price. The cost of a 2016 Honda ranges from 810 to 880 thousand rubles.

Review of BRP Outlander Max 800 XT (2008)

I've been riding quad bikes for 4 years. At first I had a Yamaha Grizzlyk 350, also utilitarian, then I took the BRP. Now in addition to this, there are 2 more children's Chinese Stealths and one Stealth 700 cc, my school friend installed it for me, sometimes he comes for a ride, if you can call it that, but more on that later.

He: BRP - Outlander, a utilitarian, two-seater, powerful, all-wheel drive ATV. The engine is 4-stroke, 2-cylinder, liquid cooled, 4 valves per cylinder, volume 800 cc. Electric starter. The transmission is a CVT variator with a subtransmission selector for up and down ranges, with reverse, neutral and parking modes. Engine braking system. Weight about 350 kg. Towing capacity 590 kg. Standardly there are two cargo platforms, front and rear, a winch, hand protection, a towbar platform, underbody and stainless steel axle protection. POWER OF 80 MARES!!!

My first Grizzly was very good. Yamahas are indestructible and very reliable, and there are no problems with spare parts, unlike BRP, which has one dealer or spare parts supplier. parts, often without even basic consumables. This of course freaks me out, but I knew about it, and I bought it because I really wanted it. I order everything I need in advance, belt, pads, spark plugs, etc.

Why I decided to change:

  1. That grizzly didn't have enough power. I periodically go to the quarry where sand is mined, and on a steep hill, when the sand stood up under the wheels.
  2. I really wanted to wear tracks in winter, and this is only possible on models starting from 600cc.
  3. Well, I really liked BRP.

I bought it from America with a mileage of 80 km. I don’t recommend taking it with high mileage, because... there are a lot of trails with rides where they are killed and drowned very specifically, look on the net, the video is more than enough!!! At that time, the cost of a new one was more than 800 rubles, now the cost has dropped to 700 and a few kopecks. I bought it after the 2008 crisis, for 500 with a spear, that is, a saving of 10 green, this is a third of the cost. Plus the purchase of geese, at that time Appaches cost 240, but I took not new ones for 110, which of course later became an additional cost for me. repair. I don’t know what kind of poodles used them, the rods were overcooked, the rear tracks were damaged. I rode for two years, this winter I ordered new rear tracks, and gears for one of the geese (I killed myself when I fell through the ice), I like to be confident in the technology, especially when you are waist-deep in snow, in the middle of a field!!! The real plus is that the new rear tracks are even wider than the old ones, by 10 centimeters!!!

The device is reliable and, with proper care, is ready to reward you by overcoming any obstacles. I took a special photo of him on the geese, because... We've already seen everything on wheels. Look, in the first photo there is a link to the video, this gives an idea of the off-road qualities of the vehicle, there are no obstacles there at all!!! On wheels, travel on the highway up to 120 km. per hour, on geese up to 110. On geese on virgin soil up to 80. The indicated speed is picked up easily and rides confidently. I don’t take risks, I accelerate only in proven areas. On wheels on the road it brakes poorly, because... Mud tires, no grip. You need to keep your distance. Well, it was not created for roads! Brakes well on the ground. Riding geese on snow is very good and soft, on the road and ground it is hard, the load on the suspension increases significantly, turning turns is very difficult. Once in the winter the front spring was broken. I tried to goat but it doesn’t work, I probably need to take it on a short base.

Of the minuses. Probably, the brakes are still rather weak. In addition, there was the following problem: in the winter, after riding, the caliper and pads froze in a clamped state; during the trip the next day, it turned out to be jammed and got so hot that the brake hose caught fire. And at that time I was going down a rather steep hill to the Istra River, where I plunged first with the front axle, and after unsuccessful attempts with the rear. I turned around there, due to the high level of ice above the bottom, I lost another track from the caterpillar, when I climbed under the ice, I fell into the river and for about twenty minutes exposed the front axle to the ice, fortunately every weekend I sit in the ice hole for at least 3 minutes, so there are no consequences was. In short, I pulled it out, changed the hose, ordered it in Moscow, and they made the same one. I changed the tie rod ends twice because... the rubber is wide and wears them out, despite the fact that there are spacers. The front plastic radiator grille fell out, the fastenings are not very good, or maybe it was knocked out by a branch. The head light is rather weak, two lamps are 35 W each. not enough for normal road illumination during night rides.

Patency. Boggles the imagination. It sat on wheels only in the floodplain of the river and in swamps, where there is soft, greasy or alluvial soil, and if the square gets on it, it immediately sits on its belly and can only be pulled out further with a winch. The rest is not a hindrance; moving to Istra is easy. Sand quarry, any slope until you tumble, please! We can move fallen trees, and we can do that. It walks through the undergrowth like a tank, calmly lays vegetation and trees under it up to 5-6 centimeters in diameter, fortunately the kengurin and protection allow you not to worry about plastic. I stormed the ascent in the quarry at 60 degrees.

Sound. What an engine sound!!! It is something!! Powerful roar. On geese I stopped on a meter-long layer of loose snow at an ascent of thirty degrees. I jumped off, accelerated, it moved and I drove on.

Accident. Relatives!!! Well, what would it be like without them!!! My beloved father-in-law went to the nearest village store for more. Well, naturally, on the way back he skidded and smashed the quadra’s face into the trees. And he blew off his leg and chest - severe bruises. Stubborn, for some reason he kept turning off the front-wheel drive, and it was also raining. The protection was straightened, a piece of plastic was soldered, and a new radiator had to be taken.

Service. I have a friend who looks after my cars and also works with quads. I service it regularly in the spring and fall. Oil, spark plugs, belt, pads, etc. Other quads available. I also service children's Stealths twice a year. Requires adjustment for winter and summer. G. Of course there is more, but I decided to try it, whether they like it or not. I liked it very much. Or maybe they’re not like that and G. for fifty dollars! When they grow up, I’ll buy them a Yamaha. Stealth 700 cc, what a gimmick. It stalls, not only at idle, but also while driving. Serviced, the result is still the same. In general, you can’t call it a trip, it’s a mockery. We'll think about what to do with it, I told my friend that he should sell it.

There is a lot of stray stuff for a quad, you can carry it, dig, plow, clean. I took a trailer, after two years the wheels became worn out. If you use it often, it’s better to take a car trailer, it’s more reliable and larger. Once he easily pulled out the big-eyed Merin, who was stuck next to the cemetery. Every time I get behind the wheel I get tremendous pleasure, it allows me to relax and relieve stress very well. By the way, riding is quite a serious exercise for all muscle groups. Sometimes after active one and a half hour rides the next day the muscles ache very pleasantly. Or you can calmly drive and contemplate the beauty of our nature near Moscow: rivers, fields and trees in each of the four seasons!

Operating experience

Judging by the reviews, the Polaris Sportsman 500 has proven itself only on the positive side . The owners appreciated the maneuverability, reliability and design of the device. Surprisingly, the ATV, released back in 2005, is still in demand today. What attracts users so much?

  • Versatility . The Polaris 500 ATV is suitable for both work and leisure . By car you can transport or tow cargo, go fishing and hunting, travel through the mountains, etc.
  • Reliability. One of the main advantages of American technology is durability . A thoroughbred horse can ride for 2-3 years without serious breakdowns. With proper handling and regular maintenance, the device will last 5-6 years .
  • Reasonable price. The Sportsman 500 is an excellent solution for those who cannot afford Honda or BRP devices.
  • High cross-country ability. practically no barriers for an American. The ATV will travel over any off-road terrain, overcome a small stream or swamp, or climb a hill.

The most noticeable drawback of an SUV is the size of the tank in newer models. Although fuel consumption is low, a 15.5 liter gas tank is enough for only 140-160 km.

Reviews

  1. I purchased this device new for 340 thousand rubles. My configuration had everything basic, but this was quite enough for regular driving through the forest. The ATV engine is very good. He is durable and quite powerful. I was also pleased with the dynamics, the model accelerates very easily, and the presence of a passenger does not affect the dynamics in any way, which I especially liked. I didn’t find any significant shortcomings in the model during the entire period of use, but there were still some electrical problems that were solved, probably, in about 20 minutes. I’ve been riding it for more than 2 years, both for fishing and just around the neighborhood.
  2. Several of my friends often go on ATV rides. I even had the chance to participate a couple of times, albeit as a passenger. After the last time, I myself came up with the idea of acquiring such equipment. When choosing, I came across Polaris and was very interested in something. I ended up buying a used one in decent condition. The first couple of weeks the ATV was really a lot of fun, but then it came down to repairs. In principle, this process did not cause any particular difficulties, but after 600 kilometers after repair it began to stall on its own. I tried almost everything, but nothing worked

Repair and tuning

For fishing and work, the basic Sportsman 500 configuration is more than enough. However, fans of tourism will have to fork out money and install new shock absorbers and a durable front bump stop . You should also customize the device to suit you. For example, shift the support plates that are on the footrests.

With repairs, everything is much simpler; serious damage occurs only with prolonged and careless use. Minor faults can be eliminated yourself. Most often, owners are faced with faulty wiring, uneven engine operation and damage to plastic parts. Finding spare parts for a popular model is not difficult; you can order everything you need from a dealer or in an online store.

In addition, it should be noted that the Polaris Sportsman Touring 570 has several modified versions, among which there are models with electric power steering, also known as EPS. This equipment, in addition to facilitating maneuvering in difficult areas, also helps smooth out shock loads, which additionally ensures riding comfort. However, if the equipment is intended for normal driving, then you can do without this improvement, since the control of the model is already quite easy, but if the ATV is used off-road, then electric power steering is quite appropriate.
