A reed valve is a very necessary device on any two-stroke engine, without which it would greatly lose power.
I’ll start from afar - there are two types of engines: four-stroke and two-stroke. In four-stroke engines, valves are responsible for distributing the fuel mixture and exhaust gases. With a two-stroke engine, the situation is different; the exhaust pipe-resonator (quarter-wave or half-wave) is responsible for the gas distribution, and the fuel enters the combustion chamber through the inlet ports in the cylinder. The pressure created in the crankcase tends to throw it back into the carburetor and air filter, which would lead to increased fuel consumption and loss of power. To avoid this, they install a valve whose task is to prevent fuel from flowing back into the carburetor. It received the name “petal valve” because the so-called petals, pressing against the valve body, prevent the mixture from flying back. This is the reed valve of the AF18E motor:

With Honda scooters, there are practically no failures of the petal valve, because it is made of materials that get along well with each other (rubber body, and the petals themselves are made of carbon). But the same cannot be said about the valves of Suzuki and Yamaha scooters: the body on them is made of plastic, and the petals are made of metal, and over time, due to dust getting on the body, the seats are knocked out by the petals, and it stops performing its task.
If your engine suddenly becomes lean with a normally adjusted carburetor, then most likely the reed valve has failed. But for some reason, many are embarrassed to go there and begin to turn the screws on the carburetor and raise the needle. Fixing it is quite simple: you need to take a piece of 800-grit sandpaper (does not apply to Honda scooters), put it on a flat surface and start rubbing the valve body on it, where indentations have formed where the petals fit - until the surface becomes smooth . After this procedure, the moped will work stably, if it did not work like that before.

Defects and methods for eliminating them - Piston group (we do not take into account the destruction of the CVM elements)
1. Check compression: with a compression ratio of 7:1, normal compression is 9.5-10.5 kg/cm?. Below 8.0-8.5 kg/cm?, indicates increased wear of the piston group, scuffing and sticking are possible. 2. With normal compression, increased wear of the piston skirt is often encountered; the external manifestation is a characteristic ringing metallic knock at the bottom of the cylinder (many classify this as a knock of the piston pin), especially noticeable during throttling. Well, then the main thing is to safely pull the shock absorber out of the niche so that it does not shoot out, and you can disassemble it. I put the ring in the same way, holding the shock absorber under the gate hinge, inserted one side of the ring into the glass up to the groove, and gradually pressed it all the way to the groove with a screwdriver.
