Honda Dio 27 reed valve repair

Reed valve

A reed valve is a very necessary device on any two-stroke engine, without which it would greatly lose power.
I’ll start from afar - there are two types of engines: four-stroke and two-stroke. In four-stroke engines, valves are responsible for distributing the fuel mixture and exhaust gases. With a two-stroke engine, the situation is different; the exhaust pipe-resonator (quarter-wave or half-wave) is responsible for the gas distribution, and the fuel enters the combustion chamber through the inlet ports in the cylinder. The pressure created in the crankcase tends to throw it back into the carburetor and air filter, which would lead to increased fuel consumption and loss of power. To avoid this, they install a valve whose task is to prevent fuel from flowing back into the carburetor. It received the name “petal valve” because the so-called petals, pressing against the valve body, prevent the mixture from flying back. This is the reed valve of the AF18E motor:

It's in disassembled condition:

With Honda scooters, there are practically no failures of the petal valve, because it is made of materials that get along well with each other (rubber body, and the petals themselves are made of carbon). But the same cannot be said about the valves of Suzuki and Yamaha scooters: the body on them is made of plastic, and the petals are made of metal, and over time, due to dust getting on the body, the seats are knocked out by the petals, and it stops performing its task.

If your engine suddenly becomes lean with a normally adjusted carburetor, then most likely the reed valve has failed. But for some reason, many are embarrassed to go there and begin to turn the screws on the carburetor and raise the needle. Fixing it is quite simple: you need to take a piece of 800-grit sandpaper (does not apply to Honda scooters), put it on a flat surface and start rubbing the valve body on it, where indentations have formed where the petals fit - until the surface becomes smooth . After this procedure, the moped will work stably, if it did not work like that before.

In general, yesterday I bought a new piston, installed locks on the exhaust, installed the rings correctly (they didn’t stick), there is gasoline from ROSNEFT, there is a spark, but it won’t start. Who knows why!?

Defects and methods for eliminating them - Piston group (we do not take into account the destruction of the CVM elements)

1. Check compression: with a compression ratio of 7:1, normal compression is 9.5-10.5 kg/cm?. Below 8.0-8.5 kg/cm?, indicates increased wear of the piston group, scuffing and sticking are possible. This significantly increases fuel consumption. Remedy: Replacement (boring) of the cylinder-piston group.

2. With normal compression, increased wear of the piston skirt is often encountered; the external manifestation is a characteristic ringing metallic knock at the bottom of the cylinder (many classify this as a knock of the piston pin), especially noticeable during throttling. Remedy: if the cylinder is in normal condition, the defect can be eliminated by replacing the piston, new one is the same size. If there is noticeable wear on the cylinder, see point 1

3 a). The engine does not develop power, and over time it becomes increasingly weaker. A common cause is a clogged muffler. The check is simple - just check it for resistance to blowing (in other words, blow into the removed muffler) - there should not be significant resistance. Remedy: If resistance is felt, the muffler must be cleaned. There are two ways here: 1) burn it - heat it in a fire or with a blowtorch until it turns red until the acrid smoke stops coming out; 2) cut, remove all carbon deposits and weld back.

3c. The engine does not develop power, and over time it becomes increasingly weaker. Sometimes the exhaust window of the cylinder becomes clogged with carbon deposits (especially clearly visible from the inside - from the piston side). Remedy: The windows need to be cleaned.

4. Poor starting, unstable operation, the engine does not maintain idle speed, or does not start at all. The reason is the lack of tightness of the cavity of the crank mechanism (crankcase) or the cylinder may be due to: a) Violation of the integrity of the gasket under the cylinder head, between the cylinder and the crankcase. c) Violation of the tightness of the connection of the crankcase halves c) Deterioration or destruction of the crankshaft oil seals d) Lack of tightness of the valve box (Suzuki)

In all these cases, if the amount of leakage is very large, the engine cannot be started, even if gasoline is poured under the spark plug. This defect can be identified by fuel leaks in places of loose connections, “sweating” of oil seals. Remedy: Points (a) - (c): Replace gaskets and oil seals with new ones. Point (d) see Defects and methods for their elimination - Gas distribution system

How to properly break in a piston? - a question that worries many. Whether you are changing the entire piston or installing a new piston, rings, or boring the cylinder, in any case you need to break in the piston. The more correctly this process is performed, the longer your piston will last, and the greater the power output you will get.

1. During break-in, you need to use only high-quality oil and preferably synthetic gasoline. (We recommend MOTUL 600) 2. Fill your scooter with gasoline only with the octane number recommended by the manufacturer (for most tuning piston 95) 3. Despite the fact that most scooters have a separate lubrication system, be sure to fill the gas tank with oil in ratio of 1 /30 - 1/40 (that is, for a 4 liter tank, 100 - 150 grams of oil) 4. Do not open the gas more than 2/3 5. Accelerate smoothly, without sudden accelerations or jerks 6. Do not load the scooter ( do not seat a second passenger, overcome inclines while reducing the throttle...) 7. While driving, do not suddenly release the throttle (closing the throttle also reduces the supply of oil to the crankcase while the engine speed has not yet dropped, which causes oil starvation of the engine) 8. Do not Turn off the scooter immediately after stopping. Let the engine idle for 1-3 minutes. 9. Break-in duration is 400 - 500 km (when replacing rings 150 - 200 km) 10. Do not accelerate more than 40 km/h 11. Do not be tempted to break the above rules

Honda Dio 27: repair and maintenance

Honda Dio series scooters are perhaps the most popular in our country today. They are especially in demand on the used moped market. Therefore, it is not surprising that the repair and operation of the Honda Dio 27 scooter are interconnected phenomena: the more the vehicle travels on our roads, the greater the need for timely diagnostics and maintenance (both scheduled and unscheduled).

Each spare part in all components of the moped design has its own service life. By certain signs you can understand when problems begin. In the event of a breakdown, you will be expertly assisted in the workshop, but among our clients there are a huge number of motorcyclists who are interested in repairing their favorite vehicle with their own hands. And although the famous Japanese manufacturer Honda's motorcycles are considered durable and reliable (according to the expert community), nothing lasts forever. Repairs on the Honda Dio 27 scooter have to be done just as often as with other models. Next, we will talk about the main characteristics of the parts, common breakdowns and repair methods.

Honda scooter repair

Today, mopeds and scooters are a great alternative to a car. Their efficiency and agility open up in the eyes of the owner interesting prospects for convenient movement in our metropolis.

One of the most popular and reliable manufacturers of two-wheeled vehicles is Honda. Scooters with the logo of this brand are distinguished by their dynamics, excellent handling, sufficient power and good torque, but at the same time moderate fuel consumption. But over time, like any other equipment, Hondas have breakdowns. Then the owners of Japanese mopeds think about the question: where can they get high-quality repairs of Honda scooters in St. Petersburg. And based on the price-quality ratio, they ultimately find our company.

Repair of Honda Dio scooters in St. Petersburg

Honda mopeds and scooters are high-tech, so their repair requires modern equipment and professional technicians. You can find all this in our service center. Our team will carry out work of any level, be it repairing a Honda Tact 24 scooter or repairing the steering wheel or engine in a Honda Dio 27, 34, 35 scooter. For example, the Honda Dio is interesting because the model is already 30 years old, and it has established itself as an unpretentious and high-quality scooter . Its creators are constantly improving the technical condition and changing the appearance, but keeping the price unchanged. However, repair of a Honda Dio moped still happens sooner or later.

Honda Dio 27 scooter repair: what you need to know about the quality of the model

Experienced owners know that the model was born in 1994, and since then has attracted the attention of the interested public. The “youngest” analogue of the scooter - Dio af-27 - was improved by the manufacturer’s engineers, retaining all the best. This representative has, perhaps, one of the most rigid frames among the extensive competitive range. Unlike Chinese mopeds, the rear part (which is not supported by a shock absorber) does not bend under the influence of the weight placed on top. Due to the rigidity, frame distortion will not occur under adequate impacts.

Honda Dio 27 (honda dio 27) - repair in detail

On the Honda Dio 27, repairs can be carried out right on the road, the structural components are so well thought out, located in the area of closest access without obstacles (of course, if you have the skills). In terms of availability of spare parts and facing parts, this moped has no equal: suppliers are actively bringing spare parts for the Honda Dio 27 scooter from the manufacturer for owners of such equipment.

If you have planned to repair the Honda Dio 27 (honda dio 27), do not worry - it can be done economically and efficiently even on your own if you have decent tools, skills and high-quality spare parts. We will always help with the supply of first-class spare parts, and you should carry out diagnostics as accurately as possible in order to understand the cause of the problem and order the correct parts. If you have a Honda Dio 27 moped, repairs should not be delayed, especially since spare parts are quite accessible (check out the assortment of our store, and most importantly, prices), plus the network is full of information on how repair work is carried out.

Disassembly and repair of front fork shock absorbers Honda DIO AF-18/25/27/28/34

The design is incredibly simple! But it is quite functional, with new bushings, anthers, intact springs and the presence (in a non-greedy amount) of solid oil (as for me, it is no worse than the TAKT one). Disassembly is not difficult. First, the fork shock absorbers must be removed; to do this, you need to unscrew two bolts from the yoke, on each stay, and remove the shock absorber from the yoke.

The shock absorber consists of a glass (10), two bushings, upper (through (5)) and lower (blind (8)) made of fluoroplastic (coprolon), rubber bumper (9), retaining ring (4), boot (3), plug ( 1), two springs (6), a stopper welded onto the feather for the spring (7) and the feather (2). To disassemble the removed shock absorber, you need to remove the boot and retaining ring, and if there are no problems with the first, then you may have to tinker with the second. There are two lugs at the ends of the locking ring; I inserted two awls into them, squeezed it, and pulled the ring out. After which the feather should come out of the glass calmly, but it happens that the upper sleeve gets stuck to the glass and does not allow the feather to be removed. Both WD and a little heat can help here. For example, in one shock absorber I had to break it and take it out in pieces.

After disassembly, all that remains is to assess the degree of wear of the parts (replace if necessary), clean the shock absorber from dirt, fill it with grease and reassemble it in the reverse order.

To repair my Honda Dio, I needed new boots, plugs and bushings.

The bushings were turned by a familiar turner for 5 UAH. per piece the material (coprolon was chosen as a more wear-resistant material) cost 35 UAH.

After the repair, the fork became simply unrecognizable and in terms of softness was in no way inferior to the Honda TACT. The effect of the repair gradually began to be lost after 3,500 km of driving on the roads of Kyiv.

. Dirt is a terrible enemy of these (and not only) shock absorbers; monitor the condition of the dust plugs and boots.

Dimensions selected experimentally for coprolon (fluoroplastic) bushings (my legendary HONDA DIO AF-25):

Useful tips from those who have experienced fork repair:

I had a hard time pulling out the upper bushings. If anyone is interested, here is the method I removed. Remove the shock absorbers, then heat the top of the glass on gas until everything starts to boil and hiss there. Place the moped on the stand and secure it. Place bricks under the bottom in front so that the rear wheel rests on the floor. As soon as one shock absorber is heated, insert it into place and lightly clamp it. Insert the shaft into the bottom where the wheel is attached and stand on it while holding the steering wheel. You can jump a little or pull the steering wheel towards you (up) while standing on the shaft. I fly out the boiled bushings instantly.

FORK BOOTS Honda dio - best proven by practice (Ukrainian auto industry ZAZ, Tavria steering column boots + 2 metal clamps + 2 plastic clamps)

I would like to add a little advice on how to finalize the design. Those who have changed the bushings more than once have noticed that when the bushings wear out, play in the feather appears in the boot. As a result, the boot wears out quickly and then falls off. After this, the glass begins to fill with water and dirt. And after a short time you need to change the entire set again. To prevent all this, I replaced the anthers with corrugated pieces of hoses from an old vacuum cleaner, after first removing the steel wire from it. Its shell is rubber. I hope my advice will be useful to many.

I took the retaining rings off and on by myself pretty quickly. I will say in advance that the shock absorber was not soured and it was possible to compress it. I compressed the shock absorber, resting it on the floor, and placed the upper part under the gate hinge (this was in a garage, you can use any protruding structure). I first selected the required spacing by placing a piece of wood. As a result, the shock absorber was clamped in a compressed state, the upper bushing no longer pressed on the locking ring and it could be removed without risk to life. I took it off by hooking a thin bent wire behind the ear of the ring (I bent a large paper clip) and pulled it out with pliers - it came out easily, the main thing is to pull it up and a little to the side so that the hooked side of the ring comes out of the grooves. Well, then the main thing is to safely pull the shock absorber out of the niche so that it does not shoot out, and you can disassemble it. I put the ring in the same way, holding the shock absorber under the gate hinge, inserted one side of the ring into the glass up to the groove, and gradually pressed it all the way to the groove with a screwdriver. I wrote more than the whole thing took in practice

Honda Dio 27: carburetor repair

In any case, carburetor repair is required on a Honda Dio 27 scooter, it is always better to carry out this work in a timely manner. The fact is that minimal problems with the jet will make the ride very uncomfortable, and more serious carburetor problems can become critical - the moped will not move at all.

The carburetor must be periodically inspected and cleaned of small dust and dirt particles, especially for those who like to drive off-road. Washing this part is not so difficult: for the entire DIO series, the carburetor is located above the variator: in plain sight and not hidden behind parts of the plastic case. The main condition for successful cleaning is to remember the location of all channels and tubes and be careful during the process. If carburetor adjustment is required, it is better to contact specialists; you will need an experienced approach.

Honda Dio 27: muffler repair

Carbon deposits form on the walls of the muffler; this is a natural process as a result of the combustion of oil and fuel. There are a number of signs indicating problems with the muffler system:

  • the moped is difficult to start;
  • speed increases very slowly;
  • there are problems with traction.

In such cases, specialists call owners of motor vehicles for diagnostics, and for good reason. The narrowing of the exhaust ports greatly reduces the power of the scooter. By the way, cleaning very heavily clogged channels is not always possible, so you can also look at whole mufflers, which can be completely replaced much faster in time.

Honda Dio: 27 plastic repair

The plastic and seams from this manufacturer, as described above, are always at their best, but there are times when it is necessary to repair the casing. Craftsmen recommend very carefully removing the body elements, cleaning them, degreasing them, treating cracks with special glue with a hardener, and securing them from the inside with fiberglass.

Inspect the defects very carefully: even if the cracks are invisible from the outside, they still need to be repaired, since they can “spread” and become larger during active use. After the glue has dried, the work areas are sanded and covered with putty. The outer layer, if necessary, is tinted to match the shade of the factory plastic. A professional service will offer you slightly different services for repairing plastic, perhaps even replacing part of the body with a new part. It all depends on your budget and the desired appearance of your two-wheeled companion.

Honda Dio 27 clutch repair

An automatic centrifugal clutch consists of pads with glued linings located inside the bell, pressed to the axle by springs. If the linings creak when starting off, this is an alarming symptom indicating possible wear of the part. If you plan to change the clutch, pay attention to the improved tuning parts: lightweight, double-pad with adjustable actuation. Manual adjustment of a standard clutch consists solely of replacing the springs with stiffer ones.

Sports tuning is limited to changing the springs in the original unit, but for racing tuning the clutch unit is completely changed.

We disassemble the gearbox

  1. Unscrew the five bolts securing the cover.

Please note and remember that two long bolts are located where the gearbox cover guide bushings are located.

The cover cannot be pulled out using a knife or screwdriver, inserting them between the cover and the gearbox housing. Damage the gasket and break the seal. You will have to put the lid on the sealant.

We look at the condition of the bearings. They must be intact and rotate freely, without jamming, without axial and radial play. The shafts should not be loose. If there are defects, then change the bearings along with the seals without hesitation. It's better to use native Japanese ones.

On the output shaft (on which the wheel fits), the bearing is difficult to pull out. You need a special puller or you will have to remove the engine to press out the bearing.

But it can be made simpler. Unhook the rear brake cable. Take a blowtorch or a tourist gas can with a burner and heat the gearbox from the outside.

The housing will expand, and the output shaft bearing along with the oil seal will easily come out using a hammer and an extension from a set of sockets.

The input shaft with bearing will also easily come out of the heated gearbox cover.

Before heating, be sure to disconnect the breather (rubber tube).

When is fork repair necessary?

Honda fans are legendary about the capriciousness of this element. Repairing the front fork of a Honda dio 27 (Honda Dio 27) is a very common occurrence, since Japanese roads and ours cannot even be compared. One can only dream about the operating conditions for which the scooter was designed in our latitudes: after all, even and clean road surfaces without dust are extremely rare in our country. Japanese engineers developed the device to suit their own realities, since in their country dust is cleaned off with special road equipment, and the coating itself is close to ideal. Japanese engineers clearly did not foresee such extreme conditions as ours (dust, potholes, dirt - even in urban conditions, it’s better not to mention rural areas).

Under heavy loads on the fork, the anthers wear out, dirt gets stuck inside the forks, so a frequent breakdown is the jamming of these elements. This problem can be felt on the road: when the front shock absorber does not cope with the task, a soft ride will not work; the rider will feel all possible bumps and holes in his hands.
