In 1983, Honda introduced the Shadow VT500 and VT750 series of motorcycles in an attempt to meet the needs of the American chopper and cruiser market. However, due to customs restrictions on imported Japanese motorcycles over 750cc, the VT750's displacement was reduced to 699cc in 1984, resulting in the bike being named the Shadow VT700. In 1985, the restrictions were lifted, and the Shadow line was soon expanded with a model with an 1100 cc engine, releasing the VT1100 motorcycle. The Shadow VT750 was replaced by the VT800 version in 1988.

The Shadow VT600 was launched in 1989 as Honda's new entry-level chopper. In 2000, the Honda Shadow Saber model was added, and in 2007 it was replaced by the 1300 cc VTX1300. Since 2011, the Shadow brand has been limited to one 750cc cruiser, available in Spirit, Aero, Phantom and RS trims. Thus, the Shadow line was actually removed from production. Honda's American-style motorcycles deservedly have a good reputation - style, excellent technical characteristics, comfort, ease of control, and all this at a good price - all this can be found in the Honda Shadow, and that is why motorcycles in this series are so popular among both beginners and experienced bikers alike. There are a lot of reports floating around the internet in the spirit of “Honda Shadow conquers the Mongolian steppes.” Of course, enduro fans will only snort contemptuously, imagining a cruiser storming dirt roads, but in the right hands, the Shadow is capable of this too.

The most popular of the Shadow line were, perhaps, the Shadow Slasher 400 and VT 600, also known as the legendary Honda Steed, produced in 400 cc (for the Japanese market) and 600 cc versions, and had many different modifications, including equipped with a springer fork type.
