Carburetor clogged
The symptoms of the problem are the same as in the previous case - you can start the moped, but then it stalls. That is, there is a spark, there is gasoline, but the moped does not start. In order to check whether the carburetor has broken down, you need to check how gasoline flows from it into the cylinder.
Take the spark plugs and wet their contacts with gasoline. Then screw the spark plug being tested into the cylinder and try to start the moped. If the bike starts this way, it means the carburetor will have to be repaired.
If you are on the road and need to quickly get to your destination, you can clean the supply hoses by blowing them with a pump. If this does not work, then you need to completely clean the carburetor.

Many scooter riders who have been using the same scooter model for several years must have encountered a problem where the scooter either does not start or starts but stalls after adding gas. What is this problem and what is its solution, we will consider in this article.
If you have this problem, it will be extremely difficult to fix it without special knowledge. The first step is to make sure that certain parts are working, so you should do the following:
- configure and adjust the carburetor;
- check the air filter;
- check compression, replace rings if necessary;
- check the spark on the spark plug;
- adjust the float on the carburetor;
- check the relay, generator and coil;
- as a last resort, try to replace the carburetor.
Cleaning and adjusting the carburetor
If you don't know why the scooter stalls when you give it gas, first check and adjust the carburetor. If it was often removed and adjusted, it may be that somewhere it began to leak air. If such a problem occurs, you can use a sealant or buy gaskets for the carburetor.
Let’s say the scooter stalls, you don’t know what to do. Then the first thing we do is clean the carburetor. Mostly the jets and auxiliary systems become clogged with dirt, so after cleaning the carburetor and adjusting all the jets, you can try to start the scooter again and give it gas. If the problem is not solved, move on to the main action - adjusting the needle to adjust the quality of the mixture. The needle in the carburetor performs the main task - adjusting the amount of fuel that is then supplied to the combustion chamber. Basically, you can adjust the quality of the mixture using a special jet on the carburetor, but if working with it does not produce results, you will have to manipulate the needle.
The needle is in close contact with the throttle handle, so when the handle is opened, the needle rises up and allows fuel to be supplied. That is, the higher the needle is raised, the more gasoline flows in and the power increases. Power guarantees better speed and traction. If you disassembled the carburetor, taking out the needle you will see 5 grooves on it, one of which has a retaining ring installed. Typically, such a ring is located in the center, that is, on the 3rd groove. If you lift the locking ring up, the needle will drop lower. This allows a leaner mixture to be supplied to the evaporation system, in which more air is supplied than gasoline. When installing the ring on the 4th and 5th grooves, the mixture becomes richer, where more gasoline is supplied than air.
Be careful that if you put the ring up or down as much as possible, this will not give the best result; the adjustment must be done gradually. Otherwise, the scooter will overheat, there will be a loss of power, and our main problem is that the scooter will stall when you press the gas handle. To find out the quality of the mixture, check the spark plug; its color will indicate whether the mixture is rich or lean.

The spark plug is not working properly
The moped will not start if the spark plugs are faulty. To diagnose this, you need to check the spark plug and the area under it. The place under the candle should be completely dry. The moped stopped starting - what to do!? The answer is simple - we need to look for the reason. There is a small nuance and that’s it. I personally had this happen a couple of times with a scooter. It stalled and that was it, and due to my inexperience I didn’t know what to do. For the phone and call a familiar “uncle”, and the reason turned out to be simple. By the way, with Japanese mopeds there are a lot of very simple nuances, due to which it stops working, especially if it’s used.
What to do if the engine does not start?
The vital activity of the engine is supported by several systems, the main ones being:
1. Power system (gasoline). 2. Ignition system (spark). 3. Exhaust system.
If one of the systems is screwed up a little, then the engine can no longer work as expected. This means we need to check these systems one by one. So, the main types of faults that make the engine “dead”:
1. Too much/too little fuel mixture (power system) enters the combustion chamber. 2. There is no spark, too weak, or does not occur at the right time (ignition system). 3. It is difficult to remove, excuse me, gases (exhaust system).
The sequence of our actions when checking these systems without additional equipment will be as follows. Let's start with the ignition system. We unscrew the spark plug, place it on the cylinder and crank the engine crankshaft. Now we just need to determine if there is a spark. If there is no spark, the reasons may be the following:
1. The spark plug is faulty. 2. The spark plug cap is faulty. 3. The high voltage wire is damaged. 4. Break or inter-turn short circuit of the ignition coil. 5. Circuit breakage due to oxidation of wiring terminals or mechanical damage. 6. Faulty electronic ignition part.
We begin the test by replacing the spark plug with a known good one. Next we move on to the 5th point, it is quite possible that some connector has simply come loose. To check the serviceability of the spark plug cap, we simply exclude it from the system. We connect the spark plug directly to the core of the high-voltage wire. It is possible that you have already discovered a malfunction, and if not, then check the ignition coil. Almost any coil (from contact and electronic ignition) produces the voltage necessary for a spark if you sharply strike the positive wire from the on-board battery across the primary winding terminal on the ignition coil. If there is a spark, then all that remains is to check the electronic part of the ignition. Unfortunately, in garage and field conditions this can only be done by replacing the switch with one that is known to work. If there is still no spark, you will have to check the integrity of the coils on the generator.

If there is a spark, we proceed to checking the power system. If our spark plug is dry, it means there is not enough gasoline. If it is wet, there is an excess of gasoline in the fuel mixture.
Fuel system malfunctions:
1. Dirty or old gasoline, water has entered the gasoline. 2. The gas tap is faulty, the hole in the gas tank cap is clogged, and the fuel filter is clogged. 3. The carburetor is clogged or not adjusted. 4. Wet or torn air filter. 5. Damaged gaskets or carburetor pipe.
By the way, check the gas tank, otherwise the sensors on mopeds, if there are any, sometimes lie.
In the first case, we check whether the carburetor is clogged and whether gasoline is supplied to it from the gas tank. To make sure that the cause is a lack of fuel, pour a few drops of gasoline directly into the spark plug hole, screw the spark plug into place and try to start the engine. If everything is normal, then the engine should make several revolutions on its own. In this case, we check whether the gas filter is clogged, whether the gas tap or vacuum tap is working.
These actions must be performed with the air filter removed and the gas tank cap removed. There is an air hole in it, which can also become clogged. If the faucet is an ordinary mechanical one, then simply open it, remove the hose from the carburetor, and see if gasoline flows. If the valve is vacuum, we do everything the same, only we turn the engine with the starter. At the same time, a vacuum is created in the carburetor inlet pipe and the vacuum valve opens.
It also happens, on Japanese scooters, you just need to close the air filter with your hand and start the moped (this happened to me a couple of times). It's like it's breaking through.
If fuel flows into the carburetor quickly, then remove the carburetor, wash it, and set the standard settings for the quality of the fuel mixture. We do the same if the candle was wet because... in this case, either the quality of the mixture is not adjusted, or the shut-off valve in the float chamber does not work. This malfunction can occur due to contaminated fuel, so you will still have to flush the entire carburetor.
When the engine is flooded, you need to ventilate it by running it a little with the starter with the spark plug removed.
If the engine runs but does not develop full power, more serious diagnostics will be needed. Check to see if the carburetor is adjusted correctly. If the engine is four-stroke, we check the valve clearances; if it is a two-stroke, we check the reed valve. In any case, you will have to check the ignition timing with a strobe light. But sometimes, especially on used Japanese scooters with high mileage, the muffler is simply clogged. It’s impossible not to mention this because... The percentage of this malfunction is quite high.
The moped starts and stalls
I recently encountered the same problem - I decided to start my moped after the winter (Chinese with a 4-stroke engine with a capacity of 50cc). I immediately cleaned the spark plug, removed and completely washed the carburetor. Started trying to start it. I succeeded about 20 times. But here’s the problem: after running for about a minute, the engine stalled. I started it again (about the tenth time) and again the same problem.
As you can see, the moped starts and stalls after 1-2 minutes of operation. After it stalls it is difficult to start. I thought that the whole problem was due to the carburetor. Maybe I didn't clean something up. I decided to take it apart again and wash everything better. After washing again, I put everything back in place and started trying to start the engine again. It started up just as hard - about 20 attempts. It ran for a couple of minutes and died.
Having turned to the Internet for help, I read that this may be due to the starting enrichment. I decided to check this version. Disconnected the terminals of the starting enrichment from the power supply. Finding them is easy - find the automatic starting enrichment and watch where the wires go from it. Get to the connector and disconnect it.
Once again I started the engine (it was hard to start again). And lo and behold, it doesn’t stall! I let the engine run for 10 minutes to warm up well. I turned it off and tried to start it again - it started with half a poke. I decided to conduct an experiment and connect the starting enrichment back. I started the moped engine, after a minute of operation the revolutions began to drop significantly until the engine completely stalled. I started it again, applying more gas so as not to stall, and added idle a little until the engine began to run stably.
After all, I concluded that the engine simply did not have enough fuel to operate, so it stalled. It should also be noted that the temperature outside was about +5 degrees. While the starting enricher was open, there was enough fuel mixture, but as soon as it was closed, the engine became low and it stalled. But this did not affect the warmed-up engine so much, so it still tried to somehow work.

Alfa moped won't start
Chinese-made mopeds have different characteristics, but the reasons why they do not start are almost the same. The fact is that Alpha, Delta, Mustang and the like mopeds have similar engine designs and general starting systems, so breakdowns on the Alpha moped can also occur in cases with other models. In general, scooterists traditionally recommend looking at the serviceability of two main components - the fuel supply and the presence of a spark on the spark plug. Below we will briefly consider each of the reasons.
Checking the spark plug
In the Alpha moped, a completely standard spark plug is installed; a spark is also supplied to it in the traditional way by generating current from a generator. First of all, we check the spark plug for the absence of mechanical damage; it must not only be intact, but there must be no carbon deposits. It is the presence of carbon deposits that in most cases prevents the Alpha moped from starting; the situation can be corrected after cleaning the contacts. This is done with sandpaper, after which the candle becomes beautiful and, most importantly, working.
Next, check for the presence of a spark plug, without removing the spark plug from the spark plug holder, just attach it to a metal surface and try to start the moped from the foot. A spark should form, if not, the reason is in the parts that are responsible for the formation of the spark. In Chinese Alpha mopeds, the ignition coil is considered to be of rather poor quality; even on new mopeds it tends to break.
Presence of compression
A moped like Alpha should produce excellent compression, which can easily be checked as follows: remove the spark plug from the cylinder head and place your finger in the hole, then pull the leg and with good compression, strong pressure should appear until the finger is pushed out. If there is a lack of compression, you will have to remove the engine and the cylinder-piston group itself.
The piston must not hang out in the cylinder and give out compression, and the rings must also be in good condition and fit in size. Otherwise, you will have to change the rings, piston and cylinder. In frequent cases, air in the cylinder is leaked by gaskets that do not create the proper vacuum.
Alpha moped carburetor
A malfunction of the fuel system is a fairly common problem as to why an alpha moped won’t start; you will have to look for the reasons in the carburetor. It is he who is responsible for the correct supply of fuel and its distribution throughout the engine. Often, the carburetors of an Alpha moped tend to become clogged with various debris, and it’s even worse when moisture and water get into the carburetor. Gasoline mixes with water and the CPG is not able to process such a mixture. Remove the carburetor and blow it out well, clean it, adjust the jets and be sure to adjust the position of the needle. This procedure is easy to perform independently.
Reason 3: electrical wiring
Sometimes owners notice that the reason when the scooter heats up and stalls is due to moisture getting into the devices or electrical wiring. In this case, the wiring is not able to function normally and, accordingly, produce a spark. The simplest thing you can do yourself is to simply dry the devices and wiring from moisture. Alfa moped won't start
If your Alpha moped is well preserved, most likely you know how to start it from the starter. But if you are faced with the impossibility of doing this, and there is no desire to start the Alpha moped from the foot, repairing the electric starter is quite simple. Usually the problem begins precisely because of a dead battery; it is enough to charge it and recheck its functionality.
What could cause
The reasons why mopeds no longer start may be the following:
- fuel system
- ignition system
- compression
- engine oil.

Fuel system
Nothing to burn, or lack of fuel in the combustion chamber, is the main reason why the moped will not start. Below are a number of common breakdowns and ways to fix them.
- Low quality fuel. Diluted gasoline or old fuel will not allow the engine to start. A particularly pressing problem is when the delta or alpha does not start after winter. The fuel in the tank has lost its combustible properties and may not even ignite.
- Faulty fuel valve. If fuel from the tank does not flow into the carburetor, the fault lies in the fuel tap. If you have a scooter, then immediately change the tap, first checking the presence of the supplied vacuum. You can try to clean the faucet on a moped.
- A dirty fuel filter can prevent gasoline from entering the carburetor. The filter must be clean.
- Carburetor. If the moped starts and stalls, there is an 80% chance that the cause is in the carburetor. To clean it, you can use a carburetor cleaner, but the safest thing to do is disassemble it and wash it yourself. The shut-off needle must be free of defects and the fuel jets must not be clogged!
- A clogged air filter is another reason why the moped has difficulty starting. After all, for an engine to operate, it requires not only gasoline, but also air. Remove the air filter and try to see if the moped starts. If it starts, then the problem was in the air filter - clean it.

Ignition system
There is nothing to set on fire, or the lack of an ignition spark is the second most important reason when the moped has trouble starting. Pay special attention to the following details:
- Candle. First of all, make sure there is a spark. Unscrew the spark plug, put the tip on, and then rotate the engine with the starter, pressing the electrodes of the spark plug against the metal of the engine. If there is a spark, it means that the entire ignition system is working properly. Otherwise, clean the spark plug, warm it up and try again. In case of failure, we look for a deeper reason.
- High voltage wire. If the wire is exposed, at least in one place, it will pierce the body, and the spark plug will not work. Insulate the wire or replace it with a new one.
- Ignition coil. If the coil does not work, there will be no spark. The ignition coil is checked using a multimeter. It is necessary to measure the resistance on the primary and secondary windings of the coil. The optimal resistance value can be found for each moped individually.
For example, the primary winding of the ignition coil (between the two coil contacts) of a Delta or Alpha moped should have a resistance in the range of 0.1 to 1.0 Ohms. The secondary winding (from the spark plug contact to the end of the wire) with a spark plug cap should resist with a force of 7-9 kOhms, without a cap - 3-4 kOhms.
If there is no resistance in the secondary winding, measure the resistance of the wire to ground. It should be within 2.5 kOhm.
- Battery. The reason that a moped does not start when cold is often a discharged battery. To get a good push-button start, be sure to install a new battery in the scooter.
Compression
Motorcycles, scooters and mopeds start successfully from the stand only if there is sufficient compression. Compression above 7 kg per cm3 is considered sufficient. The optimal value is 10 atm.
You can measure the degree of compression with a compression meter. This device is inserted into the spark plug hole and then the motor rotates. The compressometer scale will show the exact value of the compression ratio.
Advice! To ensure that your Alpha starts like a clock, change the piston group parts on time, ensuring the necessary compression.
Engine oil
This reason can only be considered in the winter season. The engine oil may thicken and prevent the crankshaft from turning. In this case, you should warm up the engine crankcase with a heater so that the oil becomes less viscous and the shaft can rotate.

Reason 1: candle.
It is because of the spark plug that the most frequent breakdowns occur, when the scooter starts and stalls. Reason 2: carburetor.
A fairly common reason when a scooter starts and immediately stalls is an incorrectly configured carburetor. It is important to adhere to the exact parameters of the carburetor, because it must supply fuel in accordance with the characteristics of the engine; before using the scooter, check the jets, the level of the float chamber, and the level of the needle. Some scooter riders note that the scooter stalls while driving after one of the jets has come loose.
Also, after disassembling and cleaning the carburetor, the scooter owner may damage the float or install the needle incorrectly. In some cases, the engine stalls due to lack of air entering the carburetor. Thoroughly clean the air filter and, preferably, the carburetor itself. If you are not sure that the problem is in the air filter, just unscrew it and start the scooter. If it works without it, you will have to clean it. In another case, water enters the carburetor and mixes with the fuel. The scooter may not start at all or stall when starting to move. It is enough to drain gasoline from the float chamber and pump in new one.
