For many owners, a four-stroke scooter is a faithful assistant that can be used at any time of the year. Therefore, you can often encounter a problem when the scooter does not start well when cold or does not want to start in winter. This is due to a number of reasons that can be eliminated on your own. Most often, the problem lies in the ignition system, the power supply system may be malfunctioning, and air leaks cannot be ruled out, but this problem occurs somewhat less frequently. From this article you will learn how to identify and solve the problem, make the scooter start immediately and in any weather.
Motorcycle won't start when cold
- Trying to start the engine in cold weather? You'll have to work hard to "wake up" him. The fuel mixture in the combustion chamber ignites only at a certain temperature, and engine oil becomes very thick in cold weather. We check the condition of the oil and depress the clutch during the starting process.
- Was the equipment stored in a poorly heated garage during the winter? In spring, rust appears on its components due to high humidity. Before you go on your first spring trip, the rust from the ignition parts must be removed.
- Difficulties with cold starting also occur in the warm season. If the motorcycle does not catch (does not start) after a long period of inactivity, you need to check the condition of the carburetor or increase the fuel level in the float chamber.
How to get the most out of a scooter with tuning?
Scooter tuning is a fairly extensive process, but consists mainly of styling (improving appearance), chassis tuning (modifying driving characteristics) and engine tuning. The last point consists of many different operations that are aimed at increasing engine power, its better implementation and increasing acceleration and maximum speed. Below we will consider modifications to the engine and transmission.
It’s worth noting right away that the scheme is general and suitable for Italian, Japanese and Chinese models. Those who doubt the quality of Chinese scooters should be reminded that the level of production of modern models from the Middle Kingdom has increased significantly over the past 10 years, and most of the spare parts on the market for all models are from Chinese manufacturers.
There are many ways to speed up your scooter and, first of all, they depend on the current technical condition of the unit. Let's take, for example, an old scooter with an incorrectly configured variator, a clogged air filter, a dirty carburetor and a number of other problems that arise when the equipment is not properly maintained. Such an engine has great potential, but it can only be realized after proper tuning. After thorough cleaning and adjustment of all systems, even standard engine performance will seem like a significant improvement.
It follows that any work aimed at improving driving performance must begin with a complete revision of the engine.
Checking the fuel system
Checking whether fuel is entering the carburetor is much easier than checking whether there is a spark at the spark plug. To do this, after making sure that the gas tank tap is open, you need to press the carburetor float stopper
If after 30 seconds of waiting the fuel still does not flow, you should pay attention to the following:
- make sure there is fuel in the gas tank;
- check if the gas tank tap is clogged with any debris;
- Check to see if gasoline flows freely through the fuel hose.
If you managed to fill the carburetor with gasoline, you can safely try to start the motorcycle. But if the engine still fails to start, then you need to check for a spark at the spark plug.
The scooter stalls when adding gas: what to do?
Many scooter riders who have been using the same scooter model for several years must have encountered a problem where the scooter either does not start or starts but stalls after adding gas. What is this problem and what is its solution, we will consider in this article.
If you have this problem, it will be extremely difficult to fix it without special knowledge. The first step is to make sure that certain parts are working, so you should do the following:
- configure and adjust the carburetor;
- check the air filter;
- check compression, replace rings if necessary;
- check the spark on the spark plug;
- adjust the float on the carburetor;
- check the relay, generator and coil;
- as a last resort, try to replace the carburetor.

Honda dio 18 stopped starting
Lingon » 08 May 2005 02:29
This means that lately the cold climate has been getting worse and worse. then it stopped even starting warm from the starter, sometimes it helped to kick it and then start it from the starter. the speed and acceleration seemed to be normal, then I was able to start it with difficulty with a kick from the 23rd time, and at that time it stalled at idle if I didn’t give it more gas. I decided to clean the carb, cleaned it, everything else didn’t help, I cleaned it now after completely disassembling it, washed everything completely and cleaned the jets and all the channels. I put everything together correctly, it won’t start - even though it cracked either from the kick or from the starter, I checked the spark - there is, and I also unscrewed the spark plug before after I cleaned the carb for the first time - it was covered in soot - I cleaned it and put it back - nothing has changed.
fuel is flowing, the fuel filter seems to be normal, but I have disconnected it from the line for now - still nothing helps, it won’t start and that’s it.
Tell me what to do next, unfortunately we don’t have any good craftsmen here. so we have to rely only on you.
Scooter carburetor clogged
Another important point is that the jets and channels of the scooter’s carburetor are clogged. In this case, as stated in many articles, normal starting and stable idle operation are unlikely. Of course, in this case, you need to remove the carburetor and blow out the jets and channels with a special liquid. The jets must first be unscrewed. Don't forget also about the channels of the starting enrichment. We looked at how to properly clean a scooter carburetor here.
Spark test
To check the Minsk motorcycle, you need to remove the spark plug and unscrew the spark plug. Next, you should immediately determine (wet or dry) the spark plug contact.
Since the spark plug has already been unscrewed, you can diagnose and verify its functionality. Before checking for a spark, the correct gap between the spark plug electrodes should be set.
According to the technical recommendation of the Minsk motorcycle manufacturer, the required gap should be from 0.4 to 0.7 mm, depending on the model. The gap is set using a feeler gauge, which can be purchased at any auto or motorcycle parts store. If you work on the Minsk motorcycle yourself, then this tool should already be in your kit.
To check the spark on a removed spark plug:
- insert the candle into the candle holder;
- short-circuit the spark plug body to ground;
- activate the winding stem.
It should also be noted that spark is different. The correct working spark should always be the same, clearly visible, and always pass in the same place.
If a spark does not jump between the contacts of the spark plug, then it is necessary to check again, but using a different spark plug. If after re-checking a spark appears, this indicates that the installed spark plug was faulty and should be replaced. If there is still no spark, then you need to check the ignition system of the Minsk motorcycle.
Exhaust tuning.
It is better to immediately replace the standard exhaust of a scooter with a sports one. Alas, the production of this system is a very precise and labor-intensive process, so it is very difficult to create an effective exhaust, especially for 2t engines, with your own hands. We recommend purchasing ready-made kits in a special store. Well-known models include Laser X, Technical Next or Leovince. With the new pipe, the engine will breathe easier, throttle response at high speeds and maximum speed will increase.
How to check the density of diesel fuel
The density of any liquid can be measured by placing an aerometer in it. Diesel fuel is poured into a transparent vessel and left in a heated room (density is measured at a liquid temperature of +200C). By measuring the density of diesel fuel, you can find out how it corresponds to the recommended values, which vary from 840 to 860 m3, depending on the season.
To find out how honest the fuel seller is, you can ask for a quality passport - a document that indicates the main characteristics of the diesel fuel.
Indicators of high-quality diesel fuel:
- Cetane number – from 40 to 55;
- Viscosity – within 1.8-5 m2/s;
- Fractional composition - the evaporation temperature range should be within 150-3600C;
- Density: summer fuel 860 m3, winter fuel – 840 m3.
If you refuse to provide a passport for a DT, it is better to refuse it altogether, since the seller has something to hide. Such misunderstandings do not arise among owners of TNK fuel cards, since the oil products of this company are characterized by stable quality.
Injector malfunction
The next reason that the engine starts and immediately stalls is a malfunction of the injector. Since most modern cars have a forced fuel injection system, this malfunction is very common.
Don't make mistakes.
What should not be allowed when operating fuel-injected cars:
- Do not disconnect the battery while the engine is running.
- Try to play with lighting as little as possible, and in general, handle food as carefully as possible. Injection cars are very sensitive to such manipulations.
- Try not to disconnect the ground on the car. Although I turn off the mains in my car in winter if I don’t drive for a long time, and so far I have not noticed any discomfort in operation, although many experts say that it is possible to erase information in the computer. I just try to let the car idle for up to 3 minutes when starting the engine.
- Injector-injected cars are not very fond of charging and starting devices, since when they are used, the voltage jumps significantly and the ECU can burn out.
ECU board.
- If a neutralizer is provided in the design of the car, then try not to start the car by towing or pushing it down a hill, as unburned fuel is formed, which, if it gets into the neutralizer, can ignite spontaneously.
- Do not allow water to enter the injector; this is strictly contraindicated. To do this, change fuel filters in a timely manner and fill with high-quality gasoline.
What does a neutralizer look like?
If your car is equipped with an L probe and a neutralizer, then think about whether you should take the risk by using leaded gasoline. When using such gasoline, the L-probe, in addition to the fact that it itself can quickly break down, it will transmit incorrect data to the ECU, indicating a large amount of oxygen, and this, to put it mildly, is not very good, as it can lead to local overheating of the engine .
So, we return again to our problem, the engine starts and immediately stalls or does not start at all.
There is no spark in the spark plug
The moped does not start well when cold due to the lack of a spark in the spark plug. To resolve the problem, you must do the following:
- you need to unscrew the spark plug and visually inspect it for damage, check the electrodes, if they are damaged, the spark plug needs to be replaced. If the spark plug gets wet, remove it from the cap and dry it, then close it back into the cap and watch for a spark. There are 5 possible states of the spark plug: good, wet, contaminated with soot, overheated, contaminated with oil;
- connect it to the ignition coil using a wire and place it on the cylinder;
- When rotating the crankshaft using an electric starter or kick starter, test the spark on the spark plug. Remember that you need to start the ignition on the moped and be careful when testing the spark, it is not recommended to do this with bare hands, protect yourself with rubber gloves;
- during rapid cranking of the crankshaft, a continuous and strong blue spark should appear in the candle; if its color is yellow, or it appears very weakly and every once in a while, then replace the spark plug and test a new one;
Other possible reasons for the lack of spark after inspecting the spark plug
If your Alpha Moped does not start, find out the possible reasons and further steps to action.
Oxidation of contacts
The appearance of the spark plug may correspond to the norm, but the spark still does not appear, which means that a discharge test needs to be done. If there is no spark again, then test the scooter’s electronics for contact oxidation.
No spark on the wire
This may be a consequence of current leakage phenomenon. It is when a metal part of the moped comes into contact with an exposed high voltage wire. The conductor may have been water, which could have accumulated in the area of exposure during active trips through puddles.
You need to carefully inspect the wires running from the spark plug to the ignition coil, and if you do not find any disconnection or damage, then you can assume a critical breakdown in the ignition system:
- damage to the ignition coil;
- ignition sensor malfunction;
- switch failure;
Each of these parts causes a lack of spark and intermittent operation of the engine, so before you buy anything, find out what exactly is wrong and try to borrow a working part to check from your friend.
For many motorcycles, a malfunction - the scooter does not start well - is detected and corrected immediately in the first stages and the engine starts properly, otherwise you should look for problems further.
Important! It is better to stay as far as possible from the spark plug hole at the top of the cylinder, because fuel may splash out and ignite from that place.
Why does the Minsk engine not start?
Minsk won't start, what should I do? Let's sort it out in order. First you need to check the presence of gasoline in the tank, this is quite simple: open the tank and shine a flashlight, if there is gasoline, then it is not the cause.
Now it’s worth checking the tap; to do this, remove it from the tank and disconnect the gasoline pipe that goes to the carburetor. After disassembling the faucet, clean it with gasoline; if sediment is present, remove it with a toothbrush, after moistening it with gasoline. Now put everything back together in reverse order.
If these steps did not help you, move on. Check whether gasoline is flowing into the carburetor; to do this, you need to disconnect the fuel hose from the carburetor, now open the tap. If gasoline flows, then it also enters the carburetor; if not, it is necessary to replace the hose or clean the tap.
Now is the time to check for a spark on the high-voltage wire. Remove the wire from the spark plug, unscrew it, reinsert the wire into the spark plug while leaning it against any metal part of the motorcycle (!). Crank the kickstarter several times, if there is a spark, then it is not the cause.
Let's move on to the carburetor, sometimes due to low-quality gasoline that gets into the float chamber, the jets tend to become clogged, which negatively affects the operation and starting of the engine. Many carburetors can be installed on a Minsk engine, but the most often installed are domestic “K” series carburetors, or imported carburetors from India - PACCO.
Let's look at K62 as an example. Here is his drawing:
Here is the sequence for disassembling this carburetor:
- Disconnect the carburetor from the cylinder.
- Unscrew the two nuts on top of the carburetor and release the throttle valve.
- By unscrewing the two nuts on the float chamber, you will gain access to it.
- Remove all jets from the carburetor (including idle speed, mixture quality).
- Blow out all the jets and wash them in gasoline.
It is also worth cleaning the float chamber if it has a “red coating” on it, which can prevent the engine from starting well. After cleaning the entire carburetor system, reassemble everything in reverse order!
If even after these steps the engine still does not want to start, it is worth starting an inspection of the CPG (Central Piston Group) by removing the cylinder head and then the cylinder itself, assess the general condition of the piston, piston rings and cylinder.
If everything is in order with the CPG, you should also do the following:
- Check the crankshaft for wear;
- Try to fill in obviously good gasoline, which is used to start another vehicle;
- Inspect the wiring; it is quite possible that somewhere a wire has burned out or come off;
- Set the ignition correctly;
- Replace the commutator (it helps if all engine components work, even if there is a spark, but it does not start. Some commutators are already defective from the factory);
- Replace the bobbin and armored wire with ones that are known to work.
Source
Cylinder-piston group.
Finally, the most effective improvement for any engine is replacing the CPG. But not just a replacement, but the installation of a new, larger piston. Fortunately, there are now many ready-made kits on the market; you don’t have to sharpen or adjust anything, as with Soviet equipment. Moreover, there is even a lot to choose from. For example, for various models with a volume of 50 cubic meters, they offer kits to increase to 63, 72, 82 and even 90+ cubic cm. In some cases, this is an almost double increase in power.
The situation is similar with larger engines, for example, for 125 cubic meters, sets of 150 or 170 cubic meters are sold. Some, in the process of tuning a scooter, manage to increase 150 cubic meters with their own hands to 225 cubic meters. Choosing the right part is not the most difficult thing, the most difficult thing is installing it. After all, this process involves almost complete disassembly of the engine. You will be faced with the need to have several special removable keys in your arsenal; you can ask them from friends or borrow them for the evening at auto repair shops. We strongly recommend studying the technical component in order to properly disassemble, replace the necessary elements and assemble the motor.
Why won't my motorcycle start?
Imagine: Sunday, great weather, in the mood to go for a ride. In anticipation of a pleasant trip, you approach your Yamaha Drag Star 400 cruiser, insert the key into the ignition, turn it, but you can’t hear the usual sound. And it would be nice if there was silence, but the car makes strange, unpleasant creaks or even “shots”. This situation can happen with any bike (both Ducati and Honda), with any motorcycle owner. Weekend ruined? Not if you correctly identify the cause and eliminate it. Our article will help you do this.
Checking the starter. Does it work when you press the button?
If the ABS and other instrument lights on the panel do not light up or go out quickly, and the starter turns slowly, the most likely cause is a discharged battery. Solution: jump start, kickstarter, or charge the battery.
- If the engine cannot be started from the starter, it does not turn over, the problem is a discharged battery or a problem with the starter itself or the fuse, another option is that the equipment is in gear with the footrest set.
- If everything is fine with the starter, the problem is probably a lack of fuel (look at the tank), a closed or clogged fuel tap or gasoline hose. Remove the hose from the injector. If there is no fuel in it, the fault may be hidden in the tap or fuel pump: the first one is easy to wash yourself, but the second one will have to be addressed to specialists.
A suddenly dead battery or a malfunction in the ignition system will not be a problem for you if you know how to jump start a bike. But if you can’t launch it from kickstarter, you can’t do it without contacting a motorcycle service center.
If everything is fine with the starter, the problem may be in the air-fuel mixture ignition system. In normal condition they should be light brown and dry. If they smell of fuel, are black and wet, and gasoline falls into the combustion chamber, the cause may be careless handling of the equipment or a malfunction of the bike. Dry and blow out the spark plugs, put them back in place and try to start the engine again. And always carry a set of spare candles with you, especially on long tourist trips in unfamiliar areas, so that trouble does not take you by surprise far from civilization.
Motorcycle alarms "Starline"
Starline has 2 worthy solutions - the Starline Moto V62 and Moto V67 models.
The V62 system has a 3D shock and tilt sensor and a 128-channel noise-resistant transceiver with a warning range of up to 2000 m. In addition, its non-scannable dialogue code will complicate the life of an attacker who wants to use a special reading device.
With the V67 model, the manufacturer went further. This system has a built-in engine blocking relay, and also has protection against radio interference and an owner authorization function via Bluetooth Smart using an RFID tag or smartphone. This means that the thief will not have time to drive far - remotely you can reduce the vehicle’s speed to a minimum or completely turn off the engine. However, I would omit the second option, since it promises problems with the law, because if you suddenly turn off the engine at 120 km/h, there will be no one to deal with the fact of the theft. By the way, the V67 system includes a reed switch sensor. If there is any attempt to break into the trunk, it will “notify” about it very loudly. It is very convenient to install for yourself or your wife, who, while pleasantly waiting for someone or something and simultaneously looking at herself in the rearview mirror, may not notice the theft.
Features of troubleshooting in diesel engines
It would seem that the absence of an ignition system in a diesel engine should sharply narrow the range of reasons why the engine stops immediately after starting. And, nevertheless, due to the more complex and sensitive diesel power system, searching for a “weak spot” when problems arise with a sudden engine stop does not become one iota easier. Reasons for the malfunction of diesel engines:
- problems associated with glow plugs;
- malfunctions of fuel equipment;
- insufficient compression in the cylinders;
- violations in the exhaust gas recirculation system.
When starting to search for the reasons for the unstable operation of a diesel engine, we first check whether fuel is supplied to the injectors. To do this, loosen the nut on one of the supply lines and turn the crankshaft several times with the starter - the fuel pump creates such pressure that fuel begins to leak at the slightest depressurization. If this does not happen, then look for the reason in airing of the fuel supply system, a clogged filter element, incorrect operation of the regulator or a breakdown of the booster pump.
In winter, a sudden stop of the diesel engine can be caused by too thick diesel fuel and faulty glow plugs. When checking them, one should not exclude failure of the heater control unit or breakdown of the power relay. After turning on the ignition, be sure to check the voltage on each spark plug.
When diagnosing the fuel supply system, you should carefully inspect the exhaust. If a diesel engine smokes and stalls, the cause is clogged or faulty injectors. In the language of auto mechanics, they begin to “pour”, partially spraying the fuel. In other cases (for example, in Common Rail engines), the spray needle may “hang”, which upsets the pressure balance in the rail and the control sensor may command the ECU to turn off the engine.
It is impossible to carry out normal diagnostics of injectors at home - this will require a special stand. The help of specialists will also be needed in the case where the cause of the malfunction is a breakdown of the fuel pump - despite all its reliability, such a possibility cannot be ruled out. But everyone can check the tension of the injection pump drive belt and the compression in the cylinders. Diagnostics of the cylinder-piston group is easy to carry out using the “folk” method. To do this, before starting, add 2-3 ml of engine oil to each cylinder - if the engine starts normally and runs for a few seconds, this indicates insufficient compression due to wear or damage to parts.
Why does the car jerk when accelerating?
As in the case with a gasoline engine discussed above, we check that the marks match. The peculiarity of a diesel engine is that both the position of the camshaft and crankshaft, and the installation angle of the injection pump pulley are controlled - the moment of ignition of the fuel mixture in the cylinder at the end of the compression stroke depends on this.
Finally, we’ll tell you about another common reason due to which there can be no question of any stable operation of the engine - the EGR valve in the exhaust gas recirculation system. If it jams open, then an excess amount of combustion products enters the intake manifold and the engine stalls from lack of oxygen. Replacing the valve solves the problem - after that the diesel engine works as if nothing had happened.
Of course, we examined only those causes of unstable operation of power units that occur most often. The variety of modern engines and their design features often require an individual approach and special knowledge. If the fault cannot be resolved, do not be discouraged - perhaps it is not even a matter of experience and skills, but a simple lack of tools and diagnostic equipment. In this case, only service center specialists can help you.

Tuned motor on a scooter
Sooner or later, any owner thinks about tuning the engine to increase its power. However, this does not provide a complete improvement in the desired characteristics. Yes, the scooter accelerates faster and carries more weight, but the speed remains the same. The engine speed, which provides one turn of the drive wheel, remains unchanged. In addition, standard clutch settings become unacceptable as engine power increases. The clutch begins to slip, because the friction force created is designed for standard engine power.
In both cases, it is necessary to adjust the transmission (gearbox, clutch):
- Setting up the clutch involves selecting the springs that press the pads away from the disc, as well as selecting the pads themselves. Heavier pads with more lining surface area will provide more friction force. This allows more torque to be transmitted. Such a clutch will work reliably even with increased engine power.
- Setting up the gearbox involves changing the gear ratio. The gears are replaced with tuning ones.
Today, tuning parts, including gears, can be found without problems. When changing the gear ratio, one revolution of the wheel is provided by fewer engine revolutions. A tuned engine is able to provide such power. At equal engine speeds, the drive wheel of a tuning scooter makes more revolutions, so the speed develops higher. The gear ratio can also be changed by adjusting the chain drive.
Sooner or later, every owner thinks about engine tuning.
Cleaning and adjusting the carburetor
If you don't know why the scooter stalls when you give it gas, first check and adjust the carburetor. If it was often removed and adjusted, it may be that somewhere it began to leak air. If such a problem occurs, you can use a sealant or buy gaskets for the carburetor.
Let’s say the scooter stalls, you don’t know what to do. Then the first thing we do is clean the carburetor. Mostly the jets and auxiliary systems become clogged with dirt, so after cleaning the carburetor and adjusting all the jets, you can try to start the scooter again and give it gas. If the problem is not solved, move on to the main action - adjusting the needle to adjust the quality of the mixture. The needle in the carburetor performs the main task - adjusting the amount of fuel that is then supplied to the combustion chamber. Basically, you can adjust the quality of the mixture using a special jet on the carburetor, but if working with it does not produce results, you will have to manipulate the needle.
The needle is in close contact with the throttle handle, so when the handle is opened, the needle rises up and allows fuel to be supplied. That is, the higher the needle is raised, the more gasoline flows in and the power increases. Power guarantees better speed and traction. If you disassembled the carburetor, taking out the needle you will see 5 grooves on it, one of which has a retaining ring installed. Typically, such a ring is located in the center, that is, on the 3rd groove. If you lift the locking ring up, the needle will drop lower. This allows a leaner mixture to be supplied to the evaporation system, in which more air is supplied than gasoline. When installing the ring on the 4th and 5th grooves, the mixture becomes richer, where more gasoline is supplied than air.
Be careful that if you put the ring up or down as much as possible, this will not give the best result; the adjustment must be done gradually. Otherwise, the scooter will overheat, there will be a loss of power, and our main problem is that the scooter will stall when you press the gas handle. To find out the quality of the mixture, check the spark plug; its color will indicate whether the mixture is rich or lean.
Please note that there may also be other reasons why the scooter stalls when applying gas. Above we indicated the main ones; for some, the scooter stalls due to improper operation of the generator. Try, adjust, and share your problems and how to solve them.
