An article about domestic motor vehicles produced by the Degtyarev arms factory. In the city of Kovrov, Vladimir region. So, about the ZID motorcycle.
Honestly, if you try to remember where and what kind of domestic motorcycles are currently produced. Then nothing appears in memory.
Is it possible that sometimes you hear information that URAL motorcycles are still being produced. In the city of Irbit in Siberia. Yes, they really do.
But their price is almost the same as a new NIVU from the factory. Therefore, they are not in demand in Russia itself. And their main sales are in the USA. There are even motorcycle dealerships where they sell them.
Why such interest? On the one hand, these are former citizens of the USSR and Russia. They moved permanently to the USA. On the other hand, the roots of the URAL are from the German heavy and off-road BMW motorcycles. Which they are successful copies of.
Dealer scanners for diagnosing trucks, special purpose vehicles and agricultural equipment for personal and commercial use can be viewed here.
The situation in the USSR
The USSR also had a huge variety of its own two-stroke motorcycles. URAL, by the way, is a 4-stroke. There were such motorcycles as Voskhod, Minsk, Izh (Jupiter and Planet), Dnepr and Ural.
Plus a considerable number of mopeds and even motorized bicycles (“tyrchki”). Plus scooters. Vyatka on 2 wheels and Ant on 3 wheels with a body. And until the very beginning of 2000, almost all of them were produced. Plus Java motorcycles from the Czech Republic. Small production of which they have maintained to this day.
Further, increased standards for limiting emissions into the atmosphere were introduced. And in fact, two-stroke engines were sentenced to ban their production.
There was no groundwork for 4-stroke engines in Russia. And motorcycle production was curtailed everywhere. With the exception of the above-mentioned URAL motorcycles.
In addition, a huge market for affordable, cheap used cars has emerged. They were not much more expensive than motorcycles. Both domestic and foreign cars. And the demand for motorcycles has sharply decreased for this reason.
Due to the fact that the season for using motorcycles in Russia is relatively short. And various types of precipitation occur relatively frequently. Plus ambient temperature readings. Because of this, riding a motorcycle for three seasons out of four is simply cold. And in recent years, due to traffic on the roads, it has also become unsafe.
History of the ZID Motor Plant
The history of motorcycles from Kovrov began in 1945, when in Moscow it was decided to organize the production of light and medium motorcycles in the USSR based on the technologies and equipment of the DKV plant that found itself in the Soviet occupation zone. In 1946, an order was issued to create motorcycle production at the Kovrov “Plant named after Degtyarev” (ZiD). The choice of a weapons factory as a base was determined by the high level of production required for the development of new products. The base prototype was the DKV RT 125 motorcycle, a lightweight machine considered the best in its class. In addition, it should be taken into account that during the war the DKV company modernized this model, so that the factory specialists were preparing the production of one of the most modern motorcycles at that time. In the same year, 1946, the first 286 copies of the K-125 were assembled—the Kovrov first-born received this index. The car was equipped with a two-stroke engine (123 cm3, 4.5 hp) in a block with a three-speed gearbox that had a foot shift mechanism. The tubular single frame was combined with a parallelogram front fork that had stamped stays. A similar machine under the designation M-1A was also assembled in Moscow at MMZ, but there were some differences between them in electrical equipment. So, on the K-125, a box with a relay, a central switch and a control pump was installed under the seat, while on the M-1A the switch and lamp were located in the headlight. The new car was immediately tested by factory athletes, and then special versions began to be prepared on orders from motorcycle clubs. Even the famous Air Force team of the Moscow Military District, whose chief was Vasily Stalin, had several Kovrov motorcycles in its composition. Since 1952, the K-125M model went into production, featuring a telescopic front fork with hydraulic shock absorbers. And for the first time such a fork appeared on the sports model K-125-C2 in 1950. There, the soft suspension of the rear wheel was tested for the first time, and the power of the forced sports engine reached 9 hp. The engines of road models were distinguished by a much more modest boost - the next model, K-55, with the same displacement received an engine with a power of only 4.75 hp, but it already had a pendulum rear suspension. The last 125 cc Kovrov car in the series was the K-58 model of 1958, which received a hooded seat frame, a new 5 hp engine, an alternator and a new shaped gas tank. The motorcycle was built in this form until 1960. In parallel with mass production, factory specialists worked on a completely new model, which received an engine with a capacity previously unused in the USSR - 175 cm3, 8 hp, with an aluminum alloy cylinder. The carburetor was located behind the cylinder in a special casing. The first motorcycles of the 1957 model were very similar to the Java, with the same round tank and an elongated instrument panel located on it. Several hundred of them were made, and then the gas tank became identical to the K-58 model, and some other simplifications took place. The car was produced in this form until 1959, when it was replaced by the Kovrovets-175A version, which was distinguished primarily by a four-speed gearbox and an alternating current generator, unified with the K-58 model. For the first time, the new “Kovrovets” featured an emblem with running hares, the silhouette of which has long been adorned with the coat of arms of the city of Kovrov. In 1960, the millionth motorcycle of the Kovrov plant was manufactured. It was the Kovrovets-175A model. This took only 14 years, while the famous BMW company produced its millionth motorcycle only in 1991. Such was the scale of production and popularity of motorcycles in the USSR. In 1962, the Kovrovets-175B version (9 hp) with a new alternating current generator and carburetor entered production. A year later, customers were offered the next version - “Kovrovets 175B”, and in 1965 the first copies of one of the most popular Soviet motorcycles, called “Voskhod”, came out of the factory gates. While retaining the main features of its predecessors, this model was radically redesigned in small details, including in terms of passive safety: for the first time, a rear-view mirror and a brake light appeared on a factory motorcycle. The rear suspension, the shape and capacity of the gas tank, the design of the front fork have changed, and the engine power has increased to 10 hp. The motorcycle kit included protective knee guards, a luggage rack and a windshield. The next version, Voskhod-2 (1970), was distinguished by the presence of direction indicators and changed styling, especially in the design of the rear part of the frame. In 1977, it was replaced by the Voskhod-2M motorcycle, whose engine power increased to 14 hp, and since 1980, the Voskhod-3 version with an updated gas tank, stronger brakes and new rear shock absorbers went into production. Voskhod-ZM, model 1983, received 12-volt electrical equipment and occupied the factory conveyor for ten years. Demand for these cars was stable, so many experimental developments, including a 250 cc motorcycle, never made it to the assembly line. It should be noted that the interests of the factory workers were not limited only to production motorcycles. Almost immediately from the start of production, the company built sports motorcycles for various purposes in small series, which successfully competed in numerous competitions. Let's remember the K-55S1M (6 hp) motorcycles for multi-day cross-country competitions or the K-55S2 (7 hp) for road racing. Various versions of motocross machines were also made on the basis of the serial K-58 and Kovrovets, and in 1964 the Kovrovets-250SK motocross motorcycle with a 250 cc engine was created. Motorcycles for motorball were built on the basis of Voskhod motorcycles for many years, and in 1987 a 250 cc motorcycle was created for trial competitions. In the same 1987, the plant for the first time in our country began manufacturing a special motorcycle trailer “Raccoon”. Off-road equipment should also be mentioned - the four-wheeled motorcycle “ZDK 175 4ShP” and the three-wheeled off-road motorcycle “Farmer” with a forced air engine cooling system. Since 1989, an engine with a reed valve at the inlet, prepared for the ZDK-175 motorcycle that did not go into production, was installed in a production chassis. The model was threaded as “Voskhod ZM 01”. Since 1993, the radically redesigned motorcycle ZDK-4.105 “Sova” went into production, which still forms the basis of the enterprise’s program, and two years later it was supplemented by the version ZDK-5.103 “Sova-200” (200 cm3, 15 hp). These cars have a completely new appearance, although the power unit is a further development of the traditional Voskhod. Since 1987, the ZDK-5.104 “Courier” version went into production with a 200 cc engine, rear suspension with a monoshock absorber, wheels of increased diameter and a front wheel disc brake. The last decade of the 20th century gave factory workers the opportunity to work in new conditions, outside the oppressive pressure of the administrative-command system. This made it possible to go beyond the seemingly once and for all established specialization and start creating models that are completely atypical for the enterprise. The first such machine was the Mokik ZDK 2.103 “Pilot” (49.9 cm3, 3.5 hp), which appeared in 1995 - an extremely popular model. The engine has a reed valve in the intake tract and is mated to a three-speed gearbox. Moreover, on the basis of this vehicle, for the first time in our country, a 50 cc three-wheeled mini-truck was created. The second model atypical for the plant was the ZDK-2.501 “Arkan” mini-roller, which debuted in 2000, on 10-inch wheels. The engine is similar to that used on the “Pilot” (49.9 cm3, 3.5 hp), but the gearbox is four-speed. The production of "Owl" along with its modifications also continues. Today, the Degtyarev Plant is the most stable enterprise of all motorcycle factories in Russia and the CIS
Personal example
I remember the example of our family. In his youth, my father rode exclusively Voskhod and Minsk motorcycles. Plus there was a Vyatka motor scooter.
Before the army, my dad bought himself an old used Moskvich 403. Still, it’s more pleasant to drive with a roof over your head.
While I was serving, I gave it to my brother. Returned from the army - studied at a university. There was no car, I walked.
Then I got married, had children, and didn’t have enough money for everything. Just like a car. Therefore, I bought the best YAVA 350 motorcycle with a sidecar in the socialist countries at that time. We drove it for ten years.
Then my father was given a series of cars at work. They were also used for family tasks.
And in the summer we rode our motorcycle literally everywhere. To grandma's 350 km from home with a cradle or faster without it. I was little, sitting on the forecastle between my father’s arms. To fruit nurseries for harvesting. To the market for various kinds of building materials for the home. Products and other needs. For fishing and so on throughout the region at distances of up to 100 km per day.
And finally, in the early 90s, we saved up for a used Zhiguli. And dad abandoned the motorcycle. I put it in the garage, where it will sit for about 10 years. After which, realizing that none of us would ride it anymore, I sold it to a young guy. He restored it and drove it. Again, taking into account the years, my father was already about 40 years old. Of course, most of the tasks were already performed by Zhiguli.
And so it was for many in those years. As soon as the opportunity arose, they switched to cars. What is called under a roof and warm in any weather is much more pleasant to drive. Plus you can take more passengers and cargo with you.
Lifan motorcycles (ZID)
The company began its work back in 1917, but its main production was aimed at the manufacture of weapons and agricultural machinery. The first motorcycle was produced in 1946 at the V. A. Degtyarev plant. Already on March 7, a motorcycle with the designation K-125 left the assembly line.
Its design was not invented by Russian engineers, but copied from German transport, although the design was partially supplemented. Until 1954, the K-125 model was actively produced and was in demand. In this regard, a special motorcycle manufacturing bureau was opened at the plant. In the same year, engineers presented the K-175 model to the country. This motorcycle became the first vehicle of the Voskhod brand and for its design, the plant named after V.A. Dektyarev received many awards.
Year after year, the company improved the first Voskhod model, increasing not only power, but also improving stability, handling and appearance. But Russian engineers did not stop there and motocross motorcycles came out of the assembly line. Due to the crisis and the pressure of officials, the plant lost not only its workers, but also the scale of production. Despite the fact that new equipment had already been purchased and was preparing to operate at full capacity, Defense Minister Ustinov did not allow the Voskhod to be upgraded to a more modern model.
Now the company is still operating and produces motorcycles under the ZiD brand. Unfortunately, modern motorcycles are not Voskhod models, since Russian production was not ready to produce competing motorcycles. Chinese companies provided their spare parts for the work, including Lifan motors. Plant named after V.A. Degtyareva produces scooters, ATVs, and mopeds.
Zid Lifan motorcycles are sold outside of Russia and maintain a high level of competition. The equipment is of high quality and a wide range. Despite the fact that production occupies a leading position in sales around the world, the price remains at a stable level, offering customers budget-friendly equipment options. Easy handling and good stability of the motorcycle is perfect for beginners.
In the assortment presented by the company, you can choose a vehicle both for city roads and off-road. ZiD Lifan also does not lag behind its competitors and offers its customers sports motorcycles, mainly intended for cross-country racing.
In Russia, the products of the ZiD plant are actively sold and interest in new products does not subside. Although the cost of produced ZiDs with Lifan engines is slightly higher than that of a completely Russian assembly.
Current situation
But times passed and by 2010 a new situation on the roads had appeared. Which again brought back interest in motorcycle technology. Already among the adult population - the main buyer.
A phenomenon called “traffic jams” has appeared. As a result, getting to work has become problematic. Hence the delays and reduction of bonuses. Disruption of events at work due to the absence of employees from the very morning.
And driving between rows of cars became a way out of the situation. People of all ages have again switched to motor vehicles.
But Japanese motorcycles have already become the basis of the motorcycle fleet. There are a huge number of them. By the way, in Japan it was from motorcycle companies that automobile companies emerged. Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kawasaki are the main ones, there are many others.
Fortunately, in Russia, the production of domestic motorcycles has also appeared. This is the ZID defense plant, in the city of Korolev, Vladimir region. We have already talked about it earlier, in the ZID article. Kovrov. Motoblocks . See the article name in the Search box in the top right window of the page.
At first, the ZID motorcycle was equipped with 4-stroke Honda engines. Then, due to the limited availability of funds in the budgets of buyers, they began to install cheaper ones. But the engines from the Chinese company Lifan have similar characteristics.
They are quite reliable and serve their purpose. There is another serious advantage, besides the prices of motorcycles. This is complete availability of spare parts in stock at the factory!
You can download a spare parts catalog for each model. And then order them by correspondence by e-mail at the factory. The ordered parts will eventually be sent to you by mail. Or they will send it to a collection point located near you. Through one of the transport companies by agreement.
You can also order the motorcycles themselves. With remote payment. Or upon receipt at the point of issue with delivery. Through one of the transport companies in Russia. A very convenient service designed for the convenience of customers.
In addition, you can download all operating manuals on the manufacturer’s website. For each of the models. When purchasing, also specify the color of the motorcycle.

Plant named after V.A. Degtyarev is one of the most famous enterprises in the USSR, and now in Russia. Three-time awarded JSC Plant named after V.A. Degtyarev" is the country's leading machine-building diversified enterprise.
The history of the enterprise dates back to 1916, when the construction of the first buildings of the Kovrov Machine Gun Plant began. Literally a year later, the plant presented the first samples of submachine guns by the Danish designer Madsen.
A few years later, the owners of the enterprise - Russian and Danish entrepreneurs (at that time the Kovrov Machine Gun Plant was the first Russian joint-stock company) - decided to cease operations, closing the plant.
In 1918, two outstanding designers V.G. were sent to the city of Kovrov. Fedorov and V.A. Degtyarev in order to resume the work of the plant, establishing the production of domestic weapons. All subsequent activities of the plant are associated with the names of these talented scientists.
In 1921 V.G. Fedorov created the country's first design bureau, where automatic small arms were developed, which later became weapons of Victory in World War II. Many famous designers worked fruitfully at the plant for many years, including V.A. Degtyarev, G.S. Shpagin, S.G. Simonov, P.M., M.M. Goryunov, S.V. Vladimirov, V.E. Voronkov. With the participation of Kovrov specialists M.T. Kalashnikov was able to prepare the first samples of the legendary AK-47 assault rifle.
The main direction of the enterprise to this day remains the development and production of automatic small arms. JSC "Plant named after. V.A. Degtyareva produces weapons for the Air Force, Navy and ground forces of armies, which are exported to many countries around the world, but the plant’s activities do not end there.
Simultaneously with the production of weapons, the plant constantly produced a variety of consumer goods, spare parts and machine parts, tools (including machine tools).
In 1946, the plant was entrusted with mastering the production and production of a light road motorcycle with a single-cylinder two-stroke engine of 125 cm3. For this purpose, the plant is creating its own motorcycle production. Thus, another milestone of the V.A. Plant was opened. Degtyarev – production of road and sports motorcycles. Kovrovsky and Voskhod motorcycles were imported to dozens of countries around the world, participated and took first places in rally raids and international competitions. An entire era in the development of domestic motocross is associated with the name of the Kovrov plant. JSC "Plant named after. V.A. Degtyarev" for his contribution to the development of the motorcycle industry was repeatedly awarded diplomas and prizes at Russian and international exhibitions.
The development and production of equipment for Minatom enterprises is another important area of ZID. The complex used for separating uranium isotopes and developed at the plant is recognized as one of the best in the world.
Today, the catalog of manufactured products contains: packaging equipment for the food industry, motor vehicles (scooters, motorcycles, ATVs), tillage equipment, agricultural equipment, industrial sewing machines, water heaters.
It is difficult to overestimate such products of the “plant named after. Degtyarev”, like the ZiD “Master” and “Favorit” , “Leader” walk-behind tractors and cultivators, which have won consumer recognition for their quality of manufacture, reliability and simplicity of design. It should be noted that walk-behind tractors and motor-cultivators “Favorit”, “Leader”, “Master” can be equipped with various foreign engines (Honda, Briggs & Stratton, Zongshen, etc.), which directly affects their final price and allows the client to choose the one that suits them. its modification.
OJSC ZiD cooperates with many design bureaus and research and production complexes, more than 1000 enterprises throughout Russia and abroad. Continuous development, introduction of innovative technologies, immediate response to market demands have ensured ZiD products worldwide fame. It is appreciated in many countries of the world.

other than that, no one stood in line for soviet shit goods
Probably because you were standing, you just listen to Svanidze more. Well, or Dudya, depending on the level of degradation of you as a person. You cannot be the second largest economy in the world and not have the second largest market. We had the CMEA, a bunch of developing countries to which “the ineffective scoop just handed out weapons and loans” - in fact, it conquered markets. Just like the United States is doing now, for example, distributing money to all sorts of Ukraine and Georgia to support democracy. They simply don’t teach you anything, and you yourself prefer to believe in fairy tales.
Are you rushing to buy cheaper and higher quality imports?
I, a young man, lived in those years and remember very well that people rushed to buy cheap ones (by the way, this word is spelled that way), and not high-quality imports from China and Vietnam. It’s stupid because the collapse of the Union destroyed, first of all, cooperation in industry, and our goods generally disappeared as a class - but we need to eat and wear something. Quality goods were expensive, not only could everyone afford them. You know, no one rushed to buy American jeans or marbled steaks - everyone wore Turkish knockoffs and “Bush legs”, which they sold to us on the cheap, because... Americans themselves prefer white meat; legs are a second-class commodity for them.
for a motorcycle and moped it’s probably been gone for at least half a century
A modern engine is always a high-tech product. Even if it's for a motorcycle. Technology does not stand still, you know. In any case, its added value is higher than that of raw materials or any wheat. This does not exclude the need to produce wheat, of course, but still.
There the criterion is the minimum cost of production, material consumption and the minimum cost of organizing production
All this together is called manufacturability. The question is that it is simply difficult to do, it requires qualifications.
That is why the Chinese have long surpassed the Japanese in the production of motorcycles and mopeds
At the same time, please note that the Chinese are now a rich nation that has long overtaken Japan, precisely because they produce mopeds and engines, and do not assemble Japanese ones.
It’s as if it’s clear that it’s impossible to compete not with the Japanese or with the Chinese, and no one in their right mind would have the idea of doing so
Dadada, I remember the government ten years ago, when Kudrin convinced us that it was unprofitable to produce meat in Russia - it was more profitable to buy in Argentina and the USA. And now we suddenly export our chicken, for example. That feeling when some liberal half-educated accountant explains to you that from an economic point of view, working is ineffective.
If we cannot compete with someone, we must create conditions for competition so that it can exist. The point, of course, is not just about some specific mopeds, but about an integrated approach. We had it under Stalin, we have it now in China, and here we have another blessed one telling me that there is no need to work - you need to get rich.
