BMW K100RS motorcycles were presented in 1983 and declared as sports-tourist class equipment. In the basic configuration, the BMW K100 had slightly smaller and not the most impressive characteristics, unlike its successor. The new product was equipped with a new fairing, into which mirrors and turn signals were already mounted.
The updated design immediately gained fans, which allowed the equipment to remain successful on the market until 1992. What was surprising was the manufacturing technology of that very fairing, which was carefully worked on to achieve better aerodynamics. Thanks to such modifications, the drag coefficient is at 0.429, and the maximum speed according to the regulations is 221 km/h.
BMW K100
Model class : road
Years of production/sales : 1983-1990
The BMW K100 was first introduced in 1983 as an alternative to the boxer 2-cylinder models of the same class and as the base version of the entire K100 line.
The basis for the BMW K100 was an in-line 4-cylinder liquid-cooled engine, located longitudinally in the frame, with a volume of 987 cc. cm. The engine had 2 valves per cylinder and produced 90 hp. maximum power.
The motorcycle frame was a steel structure in which the engine served as a load-bearing element.
The suspension is presented in the form of a conventional telescopic fork at the front and a cantilever pendulum combined with a cardan (BMW Monolever) at the rear.
Brakes – disc, 285 mm each. Brembo 2-piston calipers front and rear.
The following models were created based on the BMW K100:
- BMW K100RS
- BMW K100RT
- BMW K100LT

The younger model BMW K75, available on the market from 1986 to 1996, was also built on the basis of the BMW K100.
The BMW K100 model lasted until 1990, after which it was discontinued. A total of 12,871 units were produced. BMW K100, which clearly indicated extremely low demand for the model. For comparison, the sports tourer version of the BMW K100RS numbered more than 47,000 units produced from 1983 to 1992.
Currently, the BMW K100 model is practically not represented on the Russian market. In Europe and other countries, the BMW K100 is bought mainly by fans of the BMW brand, but the model is most popular as the base version for building custom bikes - in particular, cafe racers.
Repair and tuning
Bavarian motorcycles have never been cheap, and tuning for them also traditionally costs a lot of money. But with the G310R the situation is somewhat different, because this model itself belongs to a relatively budget segment.
Repair
You can service the BMW G310R yourself, but for repairs it is better to turn to professionals. The bike is not overcomplicated with electronics, but it still has a modern design with many components and elements.
Spare parts
All spare parts are available for order through official dealers, which have representative offices in all more or less large cities of Russia. They cost reasonable money.
Tuning
The company offers a huge selection of tuning from the catalog. Everything can be replaced, from seats and turn signals to running boards and body kit. Prices for some items are steep, but there is plenty to choose from.

Summary
Owners of the BMW K1200S speak with delight about the new car of the Bavarian manufacturer, noting its relatively low fuel consumption - about 8 liters per 100 kilometers. The 4-liter reserve fuel tank is used after 178 kilometers, which is quite good and ensures the autonomy of the motorcycle; without refueling, the K1200S is capable of traveling 227 kilometers.
Despite belonging to a famous German brand, whose vehicles are known for their demanding nature, the K1200S is quite unpretentious in operation: to maintain its performance, it is necessary to carry out timely maintenance and oil changes.
The BMW K1200S was offered in three trim levels: a full version, without ABS and without electronic suspension adjustment. The difference in the cost of modifications was several thousand dollars, which was almost the same as its main competitor, the Suzuki Hayabusa. However, the owners of the BMW K1200S did not complain about the rather high cost: for the same price they could buy a German motorcycle with a manufacturer’s guarantee, characterized by better technology and high quality production.
Additional options available to customers included a low seat, heated steering grips, an immobilizer, electronic suspension control, a center parking stand, a GPS global positioning system and a luggage package consisting of side cases and a fuel tank bag.
The appearance on the market of the much-anticipated Bavarian motorcycle, which received admiring reviews from journalists and specialists, did not pass by BMW’s main competitors, who almost immediately began developing new models - for example, Honda, a year after the release of the K1200S, released a new model that replaced Blackbird.
The BMW K1200S motorcycle has become a new direction for the Bavarian automaker, allowing it to develop further and make full use of not only the experience accumulated in the field of car development, but also innovative technologies in the field of motorcycle construction
The series of motorcycles that appeared after the K1200S has become much more interesting and attractive for motorcyclists around the world, whose attention, however, is still focused on the first model of the German sports bike
FAQ
- Can you find non-original plastic on BMW K 100 RS and RT? The original has been gone for a long time, and a new set is desperately needed. There is definitely no mass production of such parts. It's best to try looking for options on European Ebay.
- I heard that replacing the injector with a more technologically advanced one helps reduce gasoline consumption. This is true? In theory, yes, but in practice it is not so simple. The costs will most likely not be comparable to the resulting savings.
- I heard that low-quality gasoline with additives can lead to deformation and leakage of the tank. What to do if there are no normal gas stations along the way? Don't worry, that's not true. Additives can “soften” the plastic tanks used on some KTM and Husqvarna models, while the BMW K100 has an aluminum gas tank.

Suspension
BMW's decades of experimentation with alternative front-end designs has resulted in the K1200S being equipped with a new Duolever front suspension that significantly reduces the machine's weight and makes it more compact. It replaced the Telelever suspension and is equipped with one shock absorber located between two levers responsible for the vertical movement of the wheel. The design was built in such a way that it became possible to separate the forces affecting the front wheel and arising during acceleration and braking, and the forces arising during steering. The viability of such technology was proven by the Telelever pendant over the years of its use, but it was too expensive.
When entering a turn, classic forks compress during braking and make the steering column angle steeper, which speeds up the motorcycle's entry into the turn. The Telelever suspension did not change the steering angle, which slowed down the BMW bikes' turn-in. The new Duolever suspension installed on the BMW K1200S eliminated this problem. When maneuvering at low speeds, the motorcycle seems somewhat heavy and clumsy, but this feeling completely disappears at normal speeds - the steering becomes light and perfectly controlled.
An additional advantage of the Duolever suspension is that the steering remains stable when entering a turn, regardless of what the driver does with the brake or gas: the car's trajectory remains unchanged and does not stray into a wider radius.
History of appearance
The BMW K1200S motorcycle has become the most long-awaited and original model released by the German company BMW over the last ten years. Back in 2004, the world community was shocked by the concern’s announcement that it was going to directly compete with Japanese manufacturers of sport bikes. The reason for this reaction lay in the unique and distinctive image of the Bavarian manufacturer: the transverse installation of a four-cylinder engine with a volume of 1200 cubic centimeters, characteristic of the Suzuki Hayabusa, Honda CBR1100XX and Kawasaki ZX-12R, would be an out-of-the-ordinary and unconventional step for BMW.
After the first presentation, invited journalists, in reviews of the BMW K1200S, noted uneven fuel injection - until recently, a similar problem was typical for two-cylinder engines installed on the R series. The produced motorcycles had to be returned back to the factories, and production was temporarily stopped, and not the least reason for This was caused by the defect of the entire batch of incoming camshafts.
The next demonstration was held in California, and a group of American motorcycle journalists invited to the event and test drive expected a lot from the BMW K1200S.
Advantages and disadvantages
On the one hand, it is unfair to evaluate such an old motorcycle as the K100 by modern standards. On the other hand, it costs decent money even now, and not as a retro exhibit, but as a completely “ridable” bike. Therefore, we will not show the condescension of a veteran, and objectively evaluate it in the same way as all other bikes of the same class produced these days.
Advantages
- Excellent equipment. There are automatically switched off turn signals, convenient adjustment of the headlights, and much more.
- Good acceleration dynamics and high top speed.
- Effective brakes, some versions even have ABS.
- Not bad suspensions, moderately hard and working flawlessly.
- Huge resource of the engine, gearbox and all other important components.
Flaws
- Difficulty finding spare parts.
- High fuel consumption, especially during dynamic driving.
- Narrow tires make the bike unstable on uneven road surfaces.

The idea of going to Georgia had been brewing for a long time, but could not come true in my life due to various factors. This time everything turned out as simply as possible, asking Misha about his readiness to go and receiving a positive answer, he planned a week and squeezed it in between other important events and business trips. I spent a couple of hours getting ready and synchronizing the carbs, took a minimum of belongings and headed out along the M-4 on Monday morning. The road to Georgia is almost 2000 kilometers, almost perfect straight asphalt under almost forty-degree heat, sometimes diluted by torrential rains. Everything would be extremely boring, but the Rostov brewery “Nakhlebnik” (I highly recommend it, this is really the place where beer is made), crayfish and the company of my old ducatist friend brighten up these dull kilometers. I took out the camera only after crossing the border, although it immediately began to rain, which rained on us all the days we were in the country of wine, khinkali and other delicacies. In the first settlement, while looking for a hotel, a Kruzak truck reversed into me, standing on “my” side of the road. I really refused to fall, it wasn’t serious. Now we had 2 custom motorcycles, however, the second one did not have to be “cut”, but attached using wire and reinforced tape. Hello Georgia!
