Main advantages

Motorcycles IZH Jupiter -5 were quite simple in design and did not require large maintenance costs

.
Today there are many who want to criticize this technique without regard to the times, but the model was in great demand among the population. She is not forgotten even now. On the secondary market only, on Avito websites, more than 2,000 units of equipment
. The main reasons for its popularity are:

  • Maintainability and simplicity of design.
  • The presence of a semi-automatic clutch.
  • Smooth ride, comfortable movement.
  • Can be used with or without a side trailer.
  • Good car dynamics without a side trailer.
  • Durable welded tubular frame.
  • Reliable and simple gearbox.
  • Powerful alternator, good light.
  • Confident engine starting in any weather conditions.

This is not an exhaustive list of the outstanding qualities of the machine.

The motorcycle has the highest level of maintainability

. The shortage of spare parts of that time has given way to their abundance today. Any components can be purchased through online stores or in markets at affordable prices. With a small set of tools, a motorcycle of the simplest design can easily be rebuilt on the road. Replacing parts of the cylinder-piston group can be done without any problems directly in the field. More complex repairs involving removal and complete disassembly of the engine are possible in a garage without the involvement of large specialists or special tools.

The motorcycle is equipped with a semi-automatic clutch

, which greatly facilitates the driver’s work. Gear shifting is possible without squeezing the clutch lever on the steering wheel. The clutch release mechanism is activated automatically when you press the gear shift foot. Before pressing the foot, it is advisable to release the gas - the switching will occur smoothly, without jerking the transmission. No other domestic motorcycle has such a system.

The machine has a smooth ride

in single mode and with a side trailer. Riding a well-maintained motorcycle is a pleasure. The driver's position is comfortable and ergonomic. The passenger in the side trailer feels comfortable, protected from the flow of oncoming air and dust by a high transparent plastic reflector and a soft, durable awning made of leatherette. The trailer wheel has a spring-hydraulic shock absorber, which effectively absorbs uneven road surfaces.

A motorcycle with the index Izh Jupiter-5K-01 can be used with or without a side trailer

. Operation of a motorcycle with a trailer is possible only if there is a corresponding mark in the technical passport when registering with the traffic police. When installing a trailer, the final drive gear ratio is changed by installing a smaller diameter drive sprocket with 16 teeth. At the same time, the engine traction force increases significantly due to an increase in the number of crankshaft revolutions. A 19-tooth drive sprocket is installed on a single motorcycle, increasing the speed capabilities of the motorcycle.

Without a side trailer, the machine has good dynamic capabilities. The two-cylinder engine quickly picks up speed and is capable of accelerating the car from a parking lot to 100 km/h in 12 seconds.

.
This figure is 0.5-1.0 seconds better than that of the most advanced car at that time, the VAZ-2109, or the popular imported motorcycle Java-350
.

The motorcycle is assembled on a durable tubular frame

, which is simply impossible to damage if used correctly. The side trailer has its own, no less durable frame, made of thick-walled steel pipes.

The gearbox is assembled in the same housing with the engine and has its own crankcase compartment

. The unit is powerful, reliable, always working without problems throughout the entire service life of the motorcycle. There is an inspection hatch on the side cover of the clutch drive mechanism to check the oil level in the clutch housing and gearbox.

12 V alternator

. Alternating current is converted to direct current by a diode bridge. All old problems associated with the operation of 6-volt DC generators installed on previous machines have been eliminated. The electrical system has become significantly more reliable. The headlight has halogen optics, which produces a fairly powerful stream of light.

The engine starts reliably at any time of the year due to the installation of an emergency start system that supports starting with a weakly charged battery.

The youngest Jupiter

On average, every two to two and a half years, the Izhmash motorcycle production plant produces either a new model or one of the modifications of “planets” and “Jupiters”.

General view of the IZH Jupiter-5-01 motorcycle . The fairing, new tank, seat, tool boxes changed the appearance of the motorcycle and modernized its shape.

When we visited Izhevsk in May and walked along the thread of the largest motorcycle conveyor in the country, from which up to 400 thousand cars a year already roll off, we immediately noted for ourselves: the main place in the plant’s production program is occupied by the new IZH Planeta-5 models. and "IZH Jupiter-5-01". True, between them one could see small inclusions of “Planet-4” with two mufflers and an old crew part. But, as it turned out, they were intended for sale in some countries of Asia and Latin America, where they had proven themselves well and where demand for them remained.

Naturally, we wanted to test the new machine in action and subject it to editorial tests. For this purpose, the plant provided us with an IZH Jupiter 5-01 K, with a zero speedometer reading, called, according to the now accepted system, IZH-6.114-01.

In Izhevsk, a tradition has long been established to unify the “planets” and “Jupiters” models produced in parallel to a large extent. The Jupiter-5-01 motorcycle has the same frame, wheels, fuel tank, seat, front fork and shock absorbers, lighting elements, and a number of other parts and components as the “Planet-5” (“Behind the Wheel”, 1987, No. 3).

The modified shape of such elements of the new Jupiter as the fuel tank, tool box lids and seats has noticeably modernized the overall appearance of the car. The tank's capacity - 18 liters - is quite sufficient even for a motorcycle with a sidecar, and the rubber linings that have been returned to it have already been approved by motorcyclists: the tank does not get cold on the knees, and the enamel on it does not wear off.

The very first hundreds of kilometers showed that the new seat was much better than the old one. Well-profiled, moderately soft and quite wide, it is quite comfortable, allows you to change the fit if necessary - in a word, it does not cause premature fatigue on a long journey.

On the days when we received the motorcycle, it was very cold, it was raining in Izhevsk, interspersed with snow, and we asked to equip the motorcycle with a wind shield. This was due to necessity, but although such shields have been developed, they have not yet gone into production. The plant is just preparing for their development. The testers said that several options for shields were blown in a wind tunnel, and the best one was selected, which, as we ourselves saw, can also be called a fairing. The oncoming air flow rises smoothly, bending around the driver's head and without creating turbulence; Although the glass cut is significantly below eye level, you can look at the road without difficulty. Hands are also reliably protected. In addition, the fairing fits well into the silhouette of the car, adding something to its design.

The new car is also equipped with a new instrument panel, which consists of a speedometer (for the first time with a daily mileage scale, which is very convenient), a block of warning lamps and an ignition switch. All this harmoniously combines with the round headlight. The colored indicators are clearly identifiable. However, on our motorcycle, after only 2000 kilometers, dust penetrated inside the lamp unit, and the light of the lamps, especially in sunny weather, became almost invisible.

At first glance, the electrical equipment system has undergone minor, but in fact very serious changes. In the sad memory of Jupiter-4, all the wiring consisted of separate wiring bundles connected to each other by plug connectors. This made assembly easier, but lengthened the current paths, increased the circuit resistance, and greatly increased the likelihood of failures due to oxidation and contamination of the terminals. Already on Jupiter-5 the number of connectors was sharply reduced, and the ignition system was completely free of them. At “zero first” they went even further: now the wires are fastened to the BPV block with screws, which significantly increased reliability and simplified troubleshooting. The ignition switch, as we have already said, is also removed from the common housing - in terms of maintainability, this is very convenient. But one pitfall was discovered here: the ignition key is usually in a bundle with others - and when turning the steering wheel, this garland sometimes gets stuck between the lock body and the damper handle.

Speedometer with daily mileage indicator, warning lamp unit and ignition switch . A set of keys sometimes gets jammed between parts when turning on the ignition or parking lights.

The good characteristics of the motor, which we recorded during tests of Jupiter-5, have now been confirmed again. The motorcycle is very dynamic in the city and strong on the highway. It was possible to overcome inclines of up to 12% (as the road signs say) in fourth gear, and the speed did not drop below 60 km/h.

Operating with a side trailer is known to have its advantages. And its disadvantages. By creating more convenience for the driver - for example, I could afford to have a supply of gasoline in a canister, spare clothes, and something else - the stroller makes all the components work with a much greater load. It is not surprising that after 400 km the bolts had to be tightened, starting from the steering column bridges, the sidecar mounting rods and ending with the engine fasteners.

The front fork works quite hard. This is the downside of unification: the same springs that are intended for a single motorcycle are pre-loaded here and you can feel it. However, on our bike, the knocking noise when the fork is reversed is more of a concern. It seems that the viscosity of the shock absorbing fluid is insufficient. The rear shock absorbers work great in all modes and on all roads.

It seemed to me that the force on the clutch lever was too great. By the end of the second day this impression became very stable. In Moscow, for comparison, I measured the force on the “zero first” and on the YAVE-638 with a dynamometer. The results are disappointing: on YAVE the force was 8 kgf*m, on Jupiter it was one and a half times more.

About fuel consumption now we can only say that in the first hundreds of kilometers it was very high, and then began to decrease noticeably: the running-in process made its own adjustments. And the exact numbers are ahead.

There are no complaints about lighting technology. All flashlight signals are clearly visible even on a bright sunny day. All switches work clearly, without jamming.

Two notes on the side trailer. The hood of the stroller does not adhere to the base - there are gaps in the front part, and through them in the rain water easily penetrates inside. This was not the case on the previous VMZ-9.203 trailer.

At the end of the hood near the armrests, very sharp unrolled panels create a real threat to the passenger. Apparently, you will have to modify this unit yourself.

In general, the first hundreds of kilometers in a new car leave the most pleasant impression. Will it survive? I want to believe.

Disadvantages and childhood diseases

The car is not without its drawbacks, for which many people do not like it. Most of them manifest themselves as a result of improper operation or overheating of the engine in difficult road conditions. The most annoying are the following disadvantages:

  • Rapid wear of parts of the cylinder-piston group and crankshafts.
  • Low resource of chain drive parts.
  • Uneven operation of the cylinders.
  • Poor quality connectors of electrical equipment wires.
  • Imperfect, archaic design of attaching the saddle to the frame.

Wear of the main engine parts causes the most problems for motorcycle owners. Even correct and careful operation is accompanied by early wear of pistons, cylinders, and crankshaft parts. With a new engine, after a run of 15-20 thousand km

extraneous metallic sounds appear, increasing over time. They can be caused by one or more reasons:

  1. Wear of the connecting rod upper head bushing.
  2. Cylinder wear.
  3. Wear of the piston skirt.
  4. The lock falls out of the piston ring groove and is broken.
  5. Destruction of the connecting rod needle bearing on the crankshaft.

These defects can only be eliminated by replacing parts of the next repair size, boring the cylinders and bushings. All of this work, except for replacing the crankshafts, can be performed without removing the engine.

Poor quality chains or inattention to the condition of rubber boots lead to rapid wear of the drive

. At the same time, the drive sprocket wears out just as quickly and must be replaced along with the chain. The rear gear lasts longer and can survive 3 or even 4 chains.

It’s rare that an engine is characterized by perfect uniformity of cylinder operation. The primitive mechanism for adjusting the distribution of fuel mixture flows across the cylinders does not allow precise adjustment of the supply. As a result, each cylinder produces its own torque

.
Although the difference is not great, the load on the crank system is not uniform and balanced. As a result, it works with a skew in the values of the force vectors; the more loaded crankshaft quickly fails. The presence of unevenness can be easily detected by the color of candle soot
. The color of the carbon deposits on the spark plugs should be the same; if there is a significant difference, then this primarily indicates uneven operation of the cylinders. It can be adjusted, but the regular process is poorly managed and laborious.

Electrical wiring is made with low quality wires and connectors

. Cases of contact oxidation or wire breakage as a result of vibration of a loose connection are a widespread phenomenon.

The design of fastening the saddle to the frame has not changed since the appearance of the first IZhs of a similar arrangement in the early 60s. After a short period of use, the lock becomes loose due to vibration, and unpleasant play appears in the joints. Under the saddle there are connectors from the wires going to the optics of the rear flap and to the side trailer. Many owners, forgetting about this, simply tear the wires under the saddle when removing it. The rear wheel cannot be removed without removing the seat.

Design Features

IZH-60/61 are equipped with a 4.5 mm rifled barrel. It provides good accuracy and shooting accuracy. You can only shoot lead bullets from it; regular balls will not work for this rifle.

Metal parts have a black oxidized coating. The forend and butt are made of durable plastic, which is not afraid of numerous impacts on the ground when falling.

The metal rear sight and front sight are securely attached to the barrel in the muzzle area. If necessary, the rifle can be modified by installing an optical or collimator sight.

Well, the icing on the cake is the ability to adjust the stock, unlike most other models. This makes the rifle absolutely versatile and ideal for training young shooters.

Review

Classic transport has always been valued since the USSR, and 20 years ago Jupiter 5 was one of the best. Today, most riders ride foreign fast motorcycles, but occasionally you can meet a former legend of the 80s and 90s. In those years, only his brother Planet 5 competed with Jupiter, but he could not compare with the motorcycle in terms of characteristics. Their main difference was the difference in cylinders, and therefore power.

If we continue to compare these two competitors, we can highlight the fact that both models had almost the same data. For example, they had one tubular frame, and a special subframe was installed to better secure the rear wheel. In general, the entire design of Jupiter 5 was quite standard and simple, the engine was attached to the frame, the fuel tank was located above, and the headlight and dashboard were installed on the steering wheel.

In the photo of Izh Jupiter 5 you can see that below the seat there are two compartments with protection. These were glove compartments, each of which was intended for a specific purpose: the right one was for tools, and the left one housed the battery. There were also 2 exhaust pipes installed that ran through the entire motorcycle. Sometimes the pipes got hot and could cause a burn, but the manufacturer installed them below the footpegs to keep the passenger as safe as possible.

Still the first models of the Izh Jupiter 5

had simple drum brakes with a mechanical drive, but subsequent modifications received a front disc brake with a hydraulic drive.

Motorcycle appearance

When the Jupiter 5 model came out, its design was already known, because it was inherited from the Jupiter 4 motorcycle. But soon it went on sale, and the developers saw that they could borrow several design elements.

The first modification had a square-shaped dashboard, which consisted of several indicators, an ignition switch and a speedometer. But soon its appearance was redesigned, and instead of one dashboard there were two. On the first part they placed warning lamps, and on the second part they decided to put a speedometer.

The design of the fuel tank has also been slightly redesigned, with rubber pads on the knees and the shape of the tank itself has become slightly different. Accordingly, in the new modifications of the Moto Izh Jupiter 5, it received a different, longer seat that ended at the brake light. This innovation is still considered stylish and modern.

During the Soviet era, creating high-quality and impressive equipment was as easy as shelling pears, because the country had all the resources for this. Thus, the Izhevsk plant produced a motorcycle that is capable of carrying a load of up to 500 kg. Just imagine what could be carried on this transport!

Being a workhorse, the motorcycle had a fairly sporty appearance and excellent top speed. With a power of 25 hp. the motorcycle could accelerate to 120 km/h. This is a completely standard indicator, because another representative of the Dnepr could give a maximum speed of 110 km/h. In severe frosts down to 30 degrees, the unit started up perfectly, which cannot be said about the current new products. Unfortunately, many owners complain of frequent engine breakdowns due to their long lifespan.

Motorcycle design

Like many other Izh motorcycles, Jupiter-5 did not receive any special changes in design compared to the fourth Jupiter.
Soon after the release of Planet 5, the designers cheated and borrowed a couple of external elements from it. Namely: the first model released received the usual square-shaped dashboard, which included a turn signal, low-high beam, ignition switch and speedometer. After processing, one panel was divided into two parts: indicators were placed on the first, and a speedometer on the second.

The shape of the tank was also changed. Because of this, the new model received a longer seat, combined with a rear brake light. In conclusion, it should be noted that for its time, and even in the USSR, it was rightfully a branded motorcycle. Only there was no such term then. Everything changes.

Price

Today, a motorcycle of this model is not so difficult to find; in Soviet times it was bought in large quantities, so today you just need to find out how much the Izh Jupiter 5 costs. Of course, the price depends on the condition, because over such a long period many parts could become faulty.

Even during the release of the Izh Jupiter 5

its price was quite high - 1,050 rubles. But this did not stop buyers; they wanted a comfortable and fast motorcycle, which was the best then. But still, compared to other motorcycles, this model had a relatively low price. For example, then they had a price of 1,870 rubles.

If you want to buy a legend of the USSR today, be prepared to pay 55,000 rubles for a new motorcycle. Yes, they are still being reliably produced. If this price is too high for you, buy a used model - its price ranges from 5 to 40 thousand rubles.

If you want to learn more about IZh motorcycles, and this model in particular, download the instruction manual -.

The IZH Jupiter 5 motorcycle is a well-known monster of the Soviet motorcycle industry, produced from 1987 to 2008

.
Massive and archaic, it represents a superficial reworking of previous generations of the series, in which the designers attempted to correct their shortcomings with relative success. Due to its good suitability for rural areas
, the bike quickly became popular; moreover, due to a different engine, it was superior in power to its main competitor, the fifth “Planet”. Its engine was considered successful, and it was borrowed for another model of Izhevsk Motorcycle, the first Russian cruiser, which at one time was used even by traffic police officers.

Design

It would be naive to expect design delights from Soviet motorcycles. The bike looks similar to all other models produced by motorcycle factories of those years, but this is not surprising - the fifth generation was developed on the basis of the fourth, and the fourth - on the basis of the third, created back in the 70s of the last century. But many bikers, nostalgic for the old days, appreciate this rugged simplicity. Moto Izh Jupiter 5 does not stand out in any way externally from other bikes from the times of the USSR, which you can easily see for yourself by looking at the photo.

Let's talk about the characteristics

The main technical characteristics of Izh Jupiter-5 are indicated for both a single vehicle and a trailer.

Technical characteristics of Izh Jupiter 5

In general, the characteristics of the Izh Jupiter 5 motorcycle corresponded to its time. But in the 2000s, when it continued to be produced, it could no longer compete with imported models. The Chinese had already flooded the market with budget, but still more modern models, and a flood of used motorcycles poured from Japan, Europe and the USA. The characteristics of the Izh Yu5 engine were not bad, but everything else was hopelessly outdated a couple of decades ago.

Engine

The technical characteristics of the engine are not amazing - two cylinders, 347 cubic meters

.
There is enough horsepower, as much as 24
, torque -
34 Nm
.
Compared to the previous generation, the engine lost 4 hp, but gained torque, and there was also noticeably more thrust at the bottom, so in general the characteristics of the Izh Jupiter 5 became more balanced. But the engine remained two-stroke
, and oil mixed with gasoline must be poured into the gas tank
in a ratio of 1 to 25
.
But it can easily digest even AI-76, not to mention AI-80. The declared maximum speed is 125 km/h
, and it can be achieved on Jupiter without a stroller. And if you look at the engine in cross-section, it turns out that it subtly resembles all the engines at once that were ever produced at the Izhevsk Motor Plant.

Transmission

Standard 4-speed transmission

, where the first gear is down and all the others are up. It has never been reliable, but thanks to its high maintainability and availability of spare parts, Soviet motorcyclists quickly learned how to solve problems on their own. Some garage craftsmen even completely rebuilt the transmission, adding a fifth gear to the bike, but these were custom ones.

Chassis and brakes

The chassis was developed back in the 70s, if not earlier, and in Jupiter 5 it has remained virtually unchanged. Regular steel frame with telescopic fork

in front and with ancient shock absorbers a la “candle” in the rear, plus
drum brakes
on both wheels.
The effectiveness of the suspension and braking system was mediocre even for its time, but they also had a significant advantage - endurance and maintainability. On modern motorcycles (except perhaps enduro), oil from the fork quickly begins to leak on rural dirt roads, and Izh Yu5, it seems, can ride without it at all. But we still do not recommend
.

Electronics

The fifth generation Jupiter does not have the same electrical problems that the fourth had. In fact, this model is the same Jupiter 4, but with a number of corrected shortcomings, such as regular wiring problems. Gasoline consumption has also become lower thanks to a redesigned ignition. In general, the electrical circuit has changed slightly, but the weak points that regularly served as a source of headaches for owners have been removed.

Weight and dimensions

The dimensions of the bike can be called average, as well as its weight. How much does Izh Jupiter 5 weigh? By modern standards - quite a lot, about 160 kg

, and this is just
dry mass
. But the motorcycle engine is located low, so the center of gravity is also shifted down. The relatively large weight is due to the fact that in the USSR they did not skimp on hardware, and plastic elements were practically not used. If something can be made from iron, it must be made from iron! That is why the weight of the Izh Jupiter 5 engine is about a quarter of its total mass, if we consider the specimen without a sidecar.

Controllability

This mastodon drives mediocre

, and not least because of the ancient design, and with a stroller, handling becomes even worse.
But the cradles for Izh Jupiter 5 were also produced separately, so if you don’t need it, you can always disconnect it. But don't forget about weak brakes
, which are not enough to effectively stop a massive bike. On the other hand, the Izh stroller is good because you can load a lot of spare parts and other goods into it when going on a long trip, since its volume allows this.

Fuel consumption

Compared to the previous generation, gasoline consumption has decreased noticeably, from 7-8 liters to 5,5-6

.
The declared figures are about 5.9 liters at an average speed of 90 km/h
.
The quality of gasoline does not matter; the carburetor calmly consumes everything that burns. Tank volume - 18 liters
.

JAWA 210 AUTOMATIC

JAWA 210 AUTOMATIC JAWA mopeds, produced in Považska Bystrica (Czechoslovakia), continue the tradition of the plant, where in the post-war years they made micromotorcycles "Manet", and in the 50s - "JAWA Pioneer", JAWA-50, which were also supplied to our country.
Among its current products are the YAVA-207 mopeds, also known under the “Babette” brand (“Behind the Wheel,” 1980, No. 5). Inexpensive, fuel-efficient cars are quite popular; 80% of their output is exported to 35 countries. Recently, the plant mastered another moped model - YAVA-210. Its clutch and gearbox are automatic, making the moped especially easy to operate. It also has a foot pedal drive. A single-seater car reaches a speed of up to 40 km/h. Shoe wheel brakes are operated by levers on the steering wheel. Technical characteristics of the moped Java 210 automatic General data: curb weight - 54 kg; load capacity (including 5 kg of luggage) - 90 kg; speed - 40 km/h; fuel reserve - 3.8 l; consumption... Motorcycle IZH Jupiter 5K 01. Jupiter is the fifth and last?

Jupiter is the fifth and last? By the beginning of winter, when I started writing this report, the editorial “Jupiter-5K-01” began to spin sixteen thousand kilometers. Such mileage does not yet allow us to give comprehensive information about the advantages and disadvantages of the model.
Nevertheless, there are enough impressions; experts say that to determine the quality of a dish it is not necessary to eat it entirely. We will follow this principle. To begin with, despite the radical red color, I did not notice any revolutionary changes in Jupiter-5. Essentially, this is the same, well-known IZH-Jupiter with a more modern appearance. Of course, there is movement for the better, but only with the goal of “holding out” the motorcycle, at a time when a qualitative leap is needed. The product was forged purely for domestic consumption, it is clear that Izhmash does not yet plan to compete with such thoroughbred horses as, for example, BMW, Honda or Yamaha... Read more >>

IZH Jupiter 5K 01. Tests

Examining Jupiter The magazine has already talked about the new “Jupiter” model “5-01”, which the editors relatively recently received for testing (1988, No. 8).
Now, when the motorcycle’s speedometer has more than 10 thousand kilometers, we can say with confidence: the positive impressions left after the first acquaintance are confirmed. The new “Jupiter” is especially pleased with its comfort and high-torque performance. In terms of the first parameter, IL is now in no way inferior to JAVE, we are convinced of this. It has a comfortable wide saddle, a fairly elastic suspension, a high and wide steering wheel is connected to the steering column bridge not rigidly, but through rubber-metal bushings, and therefore vibrations of the chassis are not transmitted to it. We think we need to say a little more about the engine. Last summer, and everyone remembers, of course, that it was unusually hot, we spent our vacation on a motorcycle trip. In our group, in addition to the editorial Jupiter-5K-01, there was another “Jupiter” - four... Read more >>

Protection of spark plugs on an IZH motorcycle

Spark plug protection When riding a motorcycle on a wet road at high speed, water from the front wheel gets under the cap of the high voltage wire, and then the spark on the spark plug disappears - the engine stops.
Spark plug protection on an IZh motorcycle: 1 - high voltage wire cap; 2 - spark plug insulator: 3 - rubber washer 1 mm thick. One day in the rain, because of this, I lost a lot of time trying different options for protecting the candles. The simplest and absolutely reliable method turned out to be, the essence of which is clear from the figure. The rubber washer 3. fits tightly onto the spark plug insulator and fits inside the cap, does not allow water to pass through, even when you wash the motorcycle from the Hose.A. DAGAEV60311, G. Repair and tuning

The products of the Izhevsk plant have never been famous for their reliability. But there is also an advantage in this - being the first motorcycle for a novice biker, some “Izhak” acted as a “learning desk”, helping to learn not only driving, but also independent maintenance and repair.

Repair

Gearbox causes complaints

. It works clumsily, and problems sometimes arise with it, as with the clutch. Another weak point that often requires attention is the valves, the clearances of which must be carefully monitored. The Izh Jupiter 5 engine likes to “kill” them if the gaps are not adjusted in time. Fortunately, with this motor this procedure is relatively simple.

Spare parts

Finding them is not difficult, because at one time the Izhevsk plant riveted a fair number of motorcycles. The prices are low, but in some cases it is cheaper and easier to buy a “donor”, from which you can remove everything you need as needed.

Tuning

It is not easy to somehow modify a Soviet bike. Typically, owners reduce all changes made to visual tuning. Sometimes the carburetor is replaced with a Japanese or Chinese one - this relatively inexpensive operation helps avoid many potential problems.

Motorcycle modifications

The basic model had the index IZH 6.113 - 010 - 01, and the version with a side stroller - 6114 - 010 - 01. Lux

"(cradle, spare wheel, toothy tires, fairing, protective arches, trunk) and "
Tourist
" (the same, but without fairing, trunk and arches). Subsequently, the bike was modernized many times, receiving a different carburetor, a disc front brake, and a more energy-intensive fork with pneumatic adjustment. There is also a version with a cargo side trailer, but this is vanishingly rare these days. Jupiter 5 of the transitional model also comes across on sale, but this definition usually hides just one of the early modifications.

Results

The MP-60/61 is unlikely to be suitable for an experienced shooter, but for recreational shooting and mastering the intricacies of working with air guns, it is an ideal option. This rifle is also good as a “simulator” for practicing the processes of modernizing pneumatics. Its low cost allows you not to worry about making possible mistakes.

You can purchase IZH-61 in the stores of the World of Hunting chain. Look for even more weapons in our catalog.

Advantages and disadvantages

Despite all the modernization, the Izh motorcycle has both advantages and weaknesses. Powerful even by modern standards, it is clumsy, not very reliable, and requires constant attention. However, first things first.

Advantages

  • Power
. It is enough for a comfortable ride even today.
  • Possibility to buy Izh Jupiter 5 with a cradle
    .
  • Low price
of used motorcycles on the secondary market.
  • Maintainability
and affordable cost of spare parts.
  • Moderate dimensions
    - length, width, saddle height.

Flaws

  • High fuel consumption
, up to 6 liters per 100 km. And the fuel needs to be mixed with 2 tons of oil, which is inconvenient to do at a gas station.
  • Motorcycle weight
. It is felt, especially when maneuvering at low speeds.
  • Low reliability
of some components. In particular, problems with the gearbox are common.

Izh Planeta 5 and Izh Jupiter 5 are famous motorcycles of the Soviet period. Despite the passage of time, they are still in demand and popular. The famous Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant produced not just popular motorcycles, but one might even say folk ones

. As soon as they became known, disputes immediately arose on the topic: who is better, Jupiter 5 or Planet 5. Let’s compare who is in first place.

Jupiter 5

Produced by the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant from 1985 to 2008.

Main advantages:

  1. Comfortable. Softer sound with almost imperceptible vibration.
  2. A powerful engine for its time.
  3. Availability of cheap spare parts.
  4. Simple design. Easy to repair yourself.

Characteristics:

  • Weight - 160 kg
    .
  • Engine - two-stroke two-cylinder 24 hp
    .
  • Cooling - air and also available with water cooling.
  • 125 km/h
    .
  • Fuel consumption is from 5 to 7 liters per 100 km
    .

Main disadvantages:

  • Unstable ignition operation. Nowadays, the problem is treated by installing better equipment.
  • Weak shock absorbers, which begin to break as soon as you leave the asphalt. Installing Chinese analogues and stiffer springs solves this issue.
  • The motorcycle is considered too heavy for its size.

MY MOTORCYCLE

One of the representatives of the model range of the Izhevsk plant, which was produced from 2000-2005 but not in large quantities up to 3 thousand pieces, as was written on the official website of the plant www.izhmoto.ru.
The style of the motorcycle is more like a chopper, as evidenced by the high handlebar, streamlined tank (drop-shaped) on which the instrument panel is located, and a two-level saddle (for greater passenger comfort). Among the innovations it has installed: a front wheel disc brake, a new type of intake-exhaust system, which reduces the noise level and provides high traction at low speeds. The footpegs of the motorcycle are moved forward so that the driver can ride in a relaxed position. The designers had to slightly change the frame geometry to ensure a low stance, but the frame design itself is the same - tubular, with welded seams.

The tank on the IZH Junker actually consists of two small halves, between which they installed an instrument panel consisting of a speedometer and a window for warning lights. But as they often write in reviews, it’s not mega-comfortable, the design is slightly outdated, the engine eats like a horse, the dynamic performance is average, although what can you want from a two-stroke that has practically not been modified! In front of the cylinders, a cooling radiator is mounted on the frame, which is protected from damage by safety bars on the sides. Although, on the other hand, due to its simple design, it can be repaired in almost any conditions. Of course, there is a problem here too - setting both cylinders correctly, the old sore Izhov.

The gearbox and drive are standard Izhevsk ones. Gearbox is a 4-speed manual equipped with a semi-automatic clutch. The drive is chain, located on the right side. Although the motorcycle IZH 6.113-020-05 Junker has enough errors. I have not encountered much indignation from the owners of this technology. Moreover, they made it more convenient. Whatever one may say, if you “rehearse” the motor, the equipment will continue to work and the ease of maintenance affects it! It is clear that, as always, they did not “finish it with a file”)))))

Technical characteristics of the motorcycle IZH 6.113-020-05 Junker

Road motorcycle IZH 6.113-05 Junker Engine type two-stroke two-cylinder Engine displacement, cm3 347.6 Lubrication system together with fuel Liquid cooling system Maximum engine power, kW (hp) 18.0 (24.5) Maximum torque, Nm 35 Curb weight, kg 205 Maximum load, kg 150 Maximum speed, km/h 115 Fuel consumption per 100 km, l: 4 at a speed of 60 km/h 5.7 at a speed of 90 km/h 7 in urban cycle mode Dimensions dimensions, mm length 2400 width 900 height with rear view mirrors 1520 Motorcycle base, mm 1600 Ground clearance, mm 175

Planet 5

It was also produced by the Izhevsk Machine-Building Plant from 1987 to 2008.

Main advantages:

  1. The engine is “high-torque” Planet 5 is compared to a tractor, it has such good engine traction.
  2. No ignition problems.
  3. Not high fuel consumption.
  4. Compared to Jupiter 5, repairs are even easier.

Characteristics:

  • Weight - 158-165 kg
  • Engine – two-stroke single-cylinder, 22 hp
    .
  • Cooling is air.
  • The maximum speed is 120 km/h.
  • Fuel consumption - 5-6 liters
    .

Main disadvantages:

  • Starter kickback to the leg. There were cases when a foot was broken.
  • Unpleasant vibration. It's like sitting on a massager.
  • Sound when working. It looks like it's about to fall apart.

Now both motorcycles can be bought on the market, the cost ranges from 5 to 50 thousand rubles

. Both models were produced in limited quantities with water cooling; they are now more difficult to obtain. Liquid cooling reduces fuel consumption and reduces noise levels.

What common

These are motorcycles that were a good help in the household. The cost in Soviet times was around 1000 rubles. Every adult resident of the union could afford them. Both models were intended for movement on all types of roads and off-road. They deservedly enjoyed it and are popular among motorcyclists.

Externally, both devices are very similar. The devices are simple and reliable to use. You can repair them yourself. It is possible to attach a cargo or passenger side trailer. The models were designed as an alternative to passenger cars. It should be noted that the designer completed the task. In terms of chassis, cladding and parameters, they are not very different. The main difference is the engine design. Both motorcycles were upgraded many times during production. They have several types of configurations.

Comparisons and differences

Jupiter 5

- This is a livelier motorcycle with good throttle response. In terms of comfort, it is head and shoulders above its opponent. The two-cylinder engine is more powerful and faster in speed. According to the passport, the speed is 125 km/h, but it’s realistic to reach 150 km/h only after engine repairs are provided. The ignition is not stable and causes many problems. Fuel consumption is considered high.

Planet 5

- this is a steam locomotive, it has a decent torque, but when you press the throttle it reacts very sluggishly.
Gears are switched with over-throttle. But the traction is head and shoulders above due to its torque, it’s like a tractor. Another difference is the absence of ignition problems
. Repairing it is even easier and cheaper. Fuel consumption is considered low.

What is best, when and for whom

Having done a little analysis of these two models. It became clear that it would not be possible to clearly identify the best. Because some people like speed, while others prefer reliability. Some people put comfort first, others put fuel consumption first. Everyone exploited their “iron horses” in different ways and looked after them differently.

After conducting a survey, opinions were divided; rural residents gave preference to Planet 5. And residents of cities and urban-type settlements gave preference to Jupiter 5.

Villagers preferred Planet 5 because it was a workhorse. Bring, take, go fishing, hunting is ideal for Planet 5. Jupiter 5 was preferred by people who need transport once a week, for example, to go to the country.

I would like to note that these models are in demand and are still relevant today. On average for 20 thousand rubles. You can buy a motorcycle that will be in good working condition. There are no problems with spare parts. Both native and Chinese analogues are available for sale. There are no motorcycles on the market with similar characteristics and there won’t be in the near future.
