Avantis Hunter 200 ATV – model review

The Motoland Forester 200 motorcycle will certainly be of interest to those who live in harsh conditions. If you don’t have any motorcycle services around with decent mechanics, no fancy motorcycle stores with spare parts and consumables, no good asphalt, but you still want to ride on two wheels and carry everything with you, from cages with chickens to cords of firewood for the winter, then this practical bike is perfect for you. Don't be put off by its low price and mediocre build quality; in caring hands, it can live a long life without causing much trouble to the owner.

Design

Angular and hung with luggage racks, the Forester 200 looks like a hillbilly even compared to other Chinese bikes. But there is also a certain charm in this, a kind of brutality, immediately hinting that this guy is not a city sissy, but a real villager, capable of fighting back anyone who doesn’t like him. Not all motorcycles can be beautiful, right?

History[edit]

Hunter Motorcycles was founded with the intention of filling the niche of beautiful street motorcycles for students. The founder started the company when his own children came of age, realizing there weren't many student bikes on the market. In 2014, the company was bought by Hunter distributor Ben Namnik and the headquarters were moved from New South Wales to Western Australia. [2]

In 2022, Hunter Motorcycles expanded its operations into Nepal, New Zealand, Malaysia, Iran and Indonesia.

Specifications

Take the cheapest components available on the wholesale market, assemble them into a motorcycle, and the Motoland Forester 200 is ready. The simpler it is, the more reliable it is, but also the cheaper it is, and when developing this model, cheapness was at the forefront.

Engine

, 2-valve, 1-cylinder power unit dates back to the 1970s, so don't expect impressive power from it. It is only 14.3 hp. , and this is on paper, but in reality it seems that it is even lower. For more or less dynamic driving, the Motoland Forester 200 engine has to be turned to high speeds, which inevitably entails an increase in parasitic vibrations, since there is no balance shaft in the engine . On asphalt, the bike is capable of reaching speeds of up to 90 km/h , and it doesn’t need more, since in rural areas there is often nowhere to ride at such a speed.

Transmission

old 5-speed gearbox isn't particularly smooth, but what you can't take away from it is its durability. It can suddenly jam, catch “false neutrals” and knock threateningly when switching, but to really get it out of alignment, you have to hit it long and hard with a sledgehammer. Even falls, which might hit the gearbox rod with the shift paw, are unlikely to harm it.

Chassis and brakes

There is nothing simpler - a frame made of steel pipes , and the seams are made with the grace of a drunk autogen carver. The world's simplest spring shock absorbers are installed at the front and rear without any adjustments, but the suspension copes with its task tolerably. But the brakes are frankly weak - a drum mechanism on the rear wheel could still be forgiven for such a budget motorcycle, but what made the Chinese engineers install a drum on the front wheel?

Electronics

There are no more wires and other things in this model than in some ancient fiend of the Soviet motorcycle industry, so there are no problems with it. If desired, you can replace the battery with one of a suitable size, but more powerful, to make starting easier in cold weather, but this can be limited to this.

Weight and dimensions

Curb weight – 155 kg , dry – 115 kg . The difference is noticeable, and this is all due to the heavy standard body kit, which, strictly speaking, is not mandatory. It is made of the simplest black metal, not too hard and durable. The seat on the bike is comfortable , but only for the driver - there is a passenger seat, but for a person taller than 160 cm it will be extremely uncomfortable to sit on it, and the motorcycle itself will lose the remnants of its dynamics, which are already modest.

Controllability

The clumsy tubular frame coupled with suspensions a la “medieval carriage” do not contribute to good maneuverability, but in this case this is not critical. This drawback is felt only on asphalt, on which this model will probably be driven infrequently, and only at high speed. When driving over rough terrain or just dirt roads, everything is quite satisfactory, especially if you drive alone, without a passenger.

Fuel consumption

Despite the modest engine size, the Forester 200 has a decent appetite, consuming up to 5 liters per 100 km . Alas, this is a consequence of using an extremely primitive engine with low efficiency, and it is unlikely that anything can be done about the consumption. But you can fill in any gasoline, and the 13.9-liter gas tank will last for a long time.

Distinctive features

The features of the Avantis Hunter 200 lie both in the design elements and in the nuances of operation of the model.

Let's start with the engine. With an output power of 16 hp. With. torque is 10.2N.m at 5000 rpm. There is also a speed limit function, which is important if, for example, a beginner or a teenager uses an ATV.

Unlike most models, which only have an electric starter, this model also has an inertia (manual) starter, which acts as an alternative in case of failure of the electronic one.

Hydraulic disc brakes guarantee almost instantaneous stopping of vehicles. Taking into account the movement on rough terrain with a lot of obstacles, reliable brakes are a definite plus. Brake discs have additional protection.

The maximum speed of the ATV is 70 km/h. This is more than similar models competing with Avantis Hunter 200 in terms of price-quality ratio.

It is worth noting the different-sized wheels with impressive tread and the ability to “shoe” with anti-ice chains (rear wheels).

As with the operation of most models, operating the Avantis Hunter 200 requires compliance with safety precautions:

  1. It is prohibited to drive a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs;
  2. when driving an ATV on unfamiliar terrain, the speed must be reduced to a minimum;
  3. you must be extremely careful on roads with wet and icy surfaces;
  4. The Avantis Hunter 200 model is not intended for use by children under 14 years of age;
  5. Before each trip, you should make sure that all elements of the vehicle are in good working order;
  6. the speed must be selected based on the ATV control skills;
  7. Before using the vehicle, it is recommended to lubricate all contact connections with special lubricant.

The manufacturer recommends using protective equipment when operating the Avantis Hunter 200, including:

  1. motorcycle helmet;
  2. protective glasses;
  3. windproof jacket;
  4. gloves;
  5. protection for knees and elbows.

Motorcycle price

At dealers, this model costs 65-70 thousand rubles , and buyers receive a one-year warranty (which usually does not apply to some components, for example, the engine, but there are no problems with it anyway). A used copy can be found for 35-40 thousand rubles , depending on your luck. There is no particular need to worry about quality - the Motoland Forester 200 motorcycle is so simple that it is quite difficult to damage it.

FORESTER 200

The Forester motorcycle is ideal for traveling on country roads, rural and rough terrain. It has a large load capacity, spaciousness, and copes well with the transportation function, so it is suitable for trips to the country, fishing, and picking mushrooms. The Motoland Forester motorcycle is equipped with a 200 cc engine and a 5-speed gearbox. The Forester 200 is available in red and features a classic, functional design. Equipped with a high and low beam headlight, reflectors, and a large brake light. This is a real workhorse with a good margin of safety for hard everyday work. Motoland Forester weighs 155 kg, wheel diameter is 18 inches (450 mm). Tires with large studs allow you to overcome obstacles and confidently drive off-road. The front fender is elongated and protects well from dirt. The large metal tank makes it possible to travel long distances without worrying about the availability of gas stations. The motorcycle is equipped with a speedometer with an electronic gear shift sensor, a tachometer, an emergency stop sensor, an audible alarm and a horn. There is a speed sensor on the front wheel of the Forester 200. The front and rear brakes are drum brakes, easily adjustable, and if necessary, they can be tightened even in the field. The Motoland Forester 200 motorcycle is equipped with a telescopic fork with protective corrugation and traverses. The rear suspension includes 2 reliable shock absorbers. The steering wheel has a regular cross-section with a low rise and is protected by a special metal arch from damage when the motorcycle falls. There is also a choke on the steering wheel, which allows you to start the Motoland Forester without getting up from the seat. The Forester 200 motorcycle is equipped with a carburetor and a single-cylinder four-stroke 200 cm³ engine with a long service life. The battery is large, which makes it possible to carry out maintenance of the motorcycle less frequently. The manual transmission contains 5 gears. An electric starter and kickstarter can be used to start the engine. The Motoland Forester motorcycle, as a multifunctional transformer, allows you to easily increase the payload area if necessary. There is a trunk with a cargo holder on the steering wheel. There is also a large trunk at the rear of the motorcycle, and special space extenders for carrying cargo are built above the footpegs. Spaciousness, ease of maintenance, performance - all this is a Forester motorcycle. You can buy Motoland Forester in the official MotoLand store.

Repair and tuning

With motorcycles like the Motoland Forester, everything is clear - this is a model that has been reduced in price to the point beyond which “bikes with a motor” already begin. But considering its cost, it would be unfair to nitpick about little things like weak paintwork, right? Everyone gets what they pay for and this bike is dirt cheap. This may be one of the best rural options that money can buy.

Repair

If you have held a wrench in your hands at least once, then you will not have any problems repairing the Motoland Forester 200. The extremely simple design simply leaves no room for mistakes, and it will not be possible to stick any part in the wrong way. Maintenance is also reduced to standard procedures - engine oil, fork oil, chain tightening and drum brake pads. The valves also require adjustment from time to time, but, judging by the reviews of the owners, no one even thinks about them until they begin to loudly knock and demand attention.

Spare parts

A large number of parts come from other Chinese bikes, so there are no problems with searching. With a high degree of probability, everything you need will be picked up in the same motorcycle dealership that sells Motoland motorcycles, and they will take money for it very confidently. Even buying a new engine is unlikely to ruin you, although you are unlikely to have to do it - there are no complaints about the quality of the archaic engine.

Tuning

Already in stock, this bike is equipped with everything that could be needed for use in rural conditions. If desired, you can complement the motorcycle with a topcase and side cases, for which good frames are already provided. Some owners also change the exhaust because they don't like the sound of the stock system. On the same Aliexpress, a huge number of various suitable tunings are sold, and they are cheap.

Motorcycle modifications

This model is produced in only one form, although depending on the dealer, variations in the form of different colors and additional body kit are possible. Typically, the Motoland Forester 200 motorcycle is equipped with luggage racks at the front and rear, frames for side cases, protective arches and a cover that protects the chain and sprockets from dirt. But this is still one and only modification. There is also a bike on sale called Forester 200 Lite, but strictly speaking this is a completely different model, even cheaper.

Model range[edit]

There are six models in the Hunter Motorcycles lineup:

  1. Spyder 350cc
  2. Bobber 350cc
  3. Cruiser 250 and 350 cc. Cm
  4. Cafe Racer 350cc
  5. Daytona 350cc
  6. Sniper TT350X

In 2022, the "Hollister" concept model was featured on Ben Bullock's Perth to Perth ride. The motorcycle was donated by the charity Hunter Motorcycles. [3] The Hollister will soon be released in Australia, along with rumors of another model.

Advantages and disadvantages

For such a modest price it would be naive to expect impressive technical characteristics. The Motoland Forester 200 has two main advantages: price and the ability to repair “on the knee and by eye” , and it cannot boast of anything else. However, this is enough for it to become very popular, and with normal maintenance, this lightweight “rogue” will faithfully serve you until it rots from old age. Or until you get bored, which is more likely.

Advantages

  • Low cost of purchase and maintenance. The Motoland Forester 200 will be affordable for any biker, even the most economical one.
  • Excellent maintainability . You can fix it any way, anywhere.
  • Many spare parts are suitable from other “Chinese” manufacturers, although they still need to be selected.
  • Vitality and endurance . The motorcycle is not afraid of falls, and you don’t mind dropping it. You can also carry potatoes or firewood on it.

Flaws

  • Weak brakes , which are not enough when driving on highways.
  • High fuel consumption . The ancient engine is quite gluttonous, although it is undemanding when it comes to the quality of gasoline.
  • Low quality metal . The frame may suffer from a serious fall, but there is nothing to say about the trunk, arches and other metal bodywork.
  • Numerous assembly errors . Although it depends on your luck - on some copies of the Motoland Forester 200 everything is fine, but on others the wires hang in sloppy snot, the nuts are not fully tightened, etc.

Price

Many users and buyers consider the model to be overpriced, forgetting about the high technical characteristics and additional capabilities of the ATV.

The average price is set by the dealer, so it can vary from 116 to 130 thousand. Is it expensive? Maybe.

However, do not forget that with a moderate engine capacity, the Avantis Hunter 200 ATV can accelerate to 75 km per hour. Not every model has a 22-25 hp engine. is capable of this. Fuel consumption is quite economical. The second thing you need to remember is the additional equipment that takes into account the peculiarities of the domestic winter and off-season.

Avantis Hunter 200 is a brutal design, coupled with excellent technical characteristics and a number of additional options that make riding an ATV not only exciting, but also very comfortable.

The vehicle feels great on compacted soil, on an asphalt road, where it can accelerate to 75 km/h, and in impassable terrain.

Owner reviews

It’s a good piece of hardware, as simple as a ruble, I use it head and shoulders, I don’t regret it at all. I use the cheapest oil, gasoline too, but I service it on time. The engine sometimes leaks oil, I still don’t understand where it’s coming from, I tried to find the place of the leak, but I couldn’t. In the end, I scored, I just add oil occasionally, I suspect that the gasket is not holding, but there is no desire to remove the engine and look. The assembly is weak, I took the motor new, tightened all the bolts myself and insulated the wiring wisely. Valery, Usolye-Sibirskoe.

For a dacha, a normal option for the price of a scooter, durable, and not afraid of bad roads. Reliability is so-so, everything is fine with the engine and gearbox, although the second one sometimes jams, but there are a lot of small curves. Original light bulbs, candles and other small things fall off in the first month after purchase, the paint can be scratched with one movement. IMHO you can buy this motorcycle only if you have the time and desire to hang out in the garage sometimes. Konstantin, Zheleznogorsk.

The only advantage of the Forester is that it drives and does not break down, but how it drives is a separate question. The dynamics are poor, the brakes are useless, if you seat a passenger or take on a load, it doesn’t want to go at all. The engine needs to be turned, the vibrations at high speeds are such that the nuts unscrew by themselves. Ivan, Uglich.

Similar models

  • Racer Forester 200. Twin brother from the Racer company, but with reinforced wheels.
  • Comandor 200 . A utilitarian "rogue" at a good price. The origin is unknown, as it is sold by a variety of dealers under this laconic name.
  • STELS Desna 200 Country. It is very similar to the hero of our article in all respects - simple design, low price, excellent maintainability.

FAQ

  • Do dealers have spare parts? I asked in one salon - they have almost nothing at all. It depends on the dealer. In any case, there is no need to worry, many components are suitable either from other Motoland motorcycles, or are selected from a wide variety of bikes made in China. Many of them use the same parts and consumables.
  • In damp, cold weather it often starts 3-4 times, if in cold weather. It's ok when it's hot. What to do? It is worth storing your two-wheeled friend either in a ventilated garage or under a cover with breathable fabric inserts. Most likely moisture is getting in somewhere.
  • Brakes are desperately lacking; is there a budget option to replace them with disc brakes? Budget-wise, no, since you’ll have to change the tire. It's not worth it, believe me.

Conclusion

Structurally, this Motoland Forester 200 is practically no different from the motorcycles of 50 years ago. This conservative approach made it possible to reduce the cost of its design to the limit, keeping the price at an affordable level , and at the same time achieve good reliability , and most importantly, high maintainability in any conditions . Yes, some components require attention from time to time, and you have to roll up your sleeves, but even a child can understand the extremely simplified design, and for any repair a set of wrenches, a pair of screwdrivers and a sledgehammer will be enough. Considering that this bike is designed for use in rural areas, where motorcycle services are understandably scarce, this is very important, and despite all its shortcomings, this model is well suited for its purposes.
