The key is to start, we press the starter button, the engine starts confidently and quickly, literally with a click. But the Stels Leopard 600 does not have an injection engine, but a carburetor engine! The gearbox selector also caused genuine delight: it shifts so easily and, most importantly, clearly that for a moment it seemed as if you were riding not a brutal off-road machine, but a children’s toy, on which any lever can be activated even by a breath of wind. Such intelligibility of switching transmission modes can be the envy of all competitors in the quad workshop. By the way, the Leopard has a classic ATV transmission: N - neutral; L - lowering for operation in the most difficult conditions; H - high gear, designed to, as they say, rush with the breeze; and R - reverse. The 600 doesn’t tear from a stop like a sports car, without grinding on the asphalt with all four wheels, but the traction, nevertheless, is felt to be excellent. The real tests for the engine and transmission began soon after the start. A very steep and protracted climb along rocks sticking out of the ground like the tips of knives made you grab the steering wheel with both hands in a death grip and pray that the quad doesn’t fall on you. It seemed that on this climb, half of the “Leopards” should have had their wheels, if not falling off, then at least breaking their tires on sharp rocks. Thanks to the deep tread pattern, the stock 26-inch Wanda tires turned out to be surprisingly durable. The plastic is also quite good: one of the test drivers still couldn’t hold the ATV and rolled it over on its side. The Leopard escaped with a minor scratch. By the way, the body kit for the new model is manufactured by the Zhukovsky Motorcycle Plant itself, thanks to which the plastic has become not only significantly better than its Chinese counterparts, but also much cheaper.

Now about the suspension. On asphalt and flat, compacted ground, it seemed to us, although not “oaky,” but still a bit harsh. However, on mountain potholes the suspension opened up in an unexpected direction. Firstly, thanks to the large strokes (the front travels 17 centimeters, and the rear – 22.5), the Leopard perfectly swallows deep potholes and jumps over bumps and fallen trees almost imperceptibly for the rider. Unfortunately, when it fell, some water got into the engine and the oil turned into an emulsion. The engine on the Stels Leopard 600 is assembled on rolling bearings, and not on main and connecting rod journals, so the engine can safely endure a short drive on emulsion to the place where you can buy and change the oil. In short, the motor here is designed for the most severe operating conditions.

What can you say about the ergonomics of the all-terrain vehicle? The “test” can definitely be given: a fairly pleasant seat, soft steering grips, switches for lighting and axle controls are located in convenient places, a completely comfortable seating position in which neither the back nor the cervical vertebrae gets tired. The only thing that caused inconvenience at first was the strongly protruding and “breathing heat” variator cover, because of which you had to place your foot in an unnatural way. But after a few kilometers of travel, everyone got used to this feature.

The Leopard's ergonomics are at a high level - you drive all day, but there is no fatigue in your muscles. All switches are located logically and, as they say, at hand.

I’ll be honest: none of the testers expected such strength from Stels ATVs. The secret of such endurance lies, according to plant representatives, in the components: the ATV, with the exception of headlights, has no Chinese parts. What is required from a utilitarian quadric first of all? Reliability and maneuverability. Comfort, speed and everything else can wait. First you need to get into the jungle, and then get out of it. To ensure this “prose of life”, the company abandoned Chinese components and assembles “Leopards” from parts of its own production or purchases components from well-known manufacturers from Taiwan, Japan and Italy: functional sealed Koso devices, Koyo bearings, Forsa shock absorbers, etc. The 600cc single-barrel engine was originally intended for heavier-duty UTVs, so it has a serious margin of safety. Velomotors engineers modified it: they changed the mounting points and the shape of the crankcase, calculated and optimized the intake and exhaust system. The engine is powered by a Mikuni carburetor - all for the sake of reliability.

The power unit turned out to be quite large: the variator cover protrudes noticeably towards the right footrest, so much so that you have to spread your legs far apart, and a short driver can practically forget about driving while standing, because it is not possible to reliably cling to the footpegs with your feet. Therefore, we had to make our way through the hummocks and rock-strewn ascent to Ai-Petri slowly, with concentration and while sitting. Which, however, did not affect the result: 38 “horses”, traction of 54 Nm, good suspension, “evil” tires and all-wheel drive with a locked front differential are enough to overcome very difficult obstacles, which we saw in full in Crimea with its broken places in complete rubbish with asphalt (it would be better if it wasn’t there at all!), rocky slopes, washed out paths. I overcame some places reluctantly: I really felt sorry for the equipment, and it seemed that now, at best, I would lose the wheels, or even the rods and the variator belt in addition. But “Leopard” coped with everything! It is not for nothing that it was named after not the fastest and not the largest, but a powerful, strong predator that is able to drag an antelope weighing two-thirds of its own up a tree.

Stels engineers did not limit themselves to only strong components. They tried to take into account all the conditions for using ATVs as much as possible. The Leopard is equipped with a manual starter in addition to the electric one. Ground clearance is 320 mm, suspension travel is 170 at the front and 225 at the rear. Due to the small wheels (12”) and calculated geometry, the quad can be steered quite easily without any power steering. The motor is assembled in such a way that it will withstand even a short trip on emulsion, if somehow you managed to drown the ATV and it took in water through the high-mounted air intake: the Leopard can be painlessly immersed in water up to the seat.

The suspension on a relatively flat surface feels stiff and hits your hands, but when you drive through a deep hole, a diagonal ditch from a stream or a fallen thick branch, you just drive through them without paying much attention. A short wheelbase (the ATV is single-seater; although the long, comfortable seat allows you to take a passenger on board, you shouldn’t do this off-road) improves the quad’s cross-country ability, but at the same time increases its tipping ability: even at a completely harmless speed, you need to take turns carefully.

Well, the reliability of the Leopard was confirmed by our test, which included both “zero” quads and vehicles with a mileage of more than 4,000 km, and by endurance tests carried out by the plant, during which the quads covered more than 8,000 kilometers without a single breakdown. Well, as for speed and comfort... The seating position on the all-terrain vehicle is quite comfortable, the seat is soft, and you adapt to the heat from the variator and the uncomfortable position of your legs due to the protruding cover. A maximum speed of about 70 km/h is quite enough for any needs, except for racing, but this is still the lot of either much more expensive equipment, or one that can accommodate “everything at once,” but not for long. And if the return of Crimea can be viewed differently, the advantages of the Stels ATV 600 Leopard are as indisputable as the beauty of the Crimean nature.
