Snowmobile Yamaha Viking 540 (Yamaha Viking): technical characteristics, dimensions
The Japanese manufacturer Yamaha is one of the world's best developers of a wide variety of equipment, among which snowmobiles occupy a worthy place .
Well, among them, the Yamaha Viking 540 model is especially distinguished. This device is the most successful development of the company .
It is very popular and is used all over the world. The reason for this is the excellent performance characteristics.
When starting a conversation about this snowmobile model, from the first words I would like to note its great cross-country ability, excellent endurance and ability to transport cargo.
At the same time, we can talk about this snowmobile as an economical and reliable device.
But these qualities, however, can be attributed to any Yamaha equipment.
Price of parts on the market and on the Internet
Before purchasing the necessary product, it is recommended to study the market. You can ask about prices in your city for ski linings for a particular model, or use the Internet for this. Pricing will vary, but it is worth considering that spare parts ordered via the Internet still need to be delivered, and this also costs money. In local stores this is usually already included in the price.

Technical characteristics and price - Operational purpose
Test drive Yamaha VK540 III Viking / Yamaha. Russian Varyag; Japanese Viking This improved model has such features as a powerful engine, an air cooling system, a new torsion bar rear suspension, wide skis, and tracks. If with cars and motorcycles everything is more or less clear in terms of maximum speed, then it is very difficult to say exactly what the speed of a snowmobile will be in certain conditions. |
Yamaha vk540e snowmobile technical specifications Also, do not forget about the distance to the snowmobile tunnel; there is a risk that a track with a large lug will cling to the inside of the tunnel. The attractive price of the Composite C38 track will please you as the owner, and the lug pattern will make it easier to move over rough terrain and build a new route in the forest. |
- Rear torsion bar suspension, which is responsible for comfort;
- With tracks of increased width, as well as a star equipped with external gearing, this allows the driver to easily overcome virgin snow;
- Simplicity for everyday use;
- Attractive design.
Characteristics and comparison of the Yamaha Viking suspension • large rear suspension travel of 278 mm, which gives an advantage when driving on uneven terrain;.
On which models can expanders be installed?
Ski covers for snowmobiles are most often made mainly of frost-resistant plastic. For Yamaha models, expanders are selected individually, each has its own size and some other features. The thickness in mm is approximately the same, each manufacturer approaches this individually, but you should not take a product thinner than 5 mm. Next, we’ll look in more detail at which model and which overlay is suitable.
Yamaha 540
The covers for the Yamaha 540 are unique; other manufacturers do not have similar models. A special feature of the skis is their width, which is 340 mm. This indicator will help distribute the weight more evenly, which will have a beneficial effect on gliding. Thanks to this pad, the cross-country ability of the snowmobile will increase significantly under any conditions.
Yamaha Multi Purpos
Yamaha Multi ski extensions are used for different purposes:
- to increase the quality of gliding on snow;
- increase the cross-country ability of the unit in deep snow;
- protect the skate from freezing during long-term parking;
- increase the service life of the ski under any conditions.
For Multi Purpos, products with a length of 1300 mm and a width of 300 mm are suitable. There is no need to attach them additionally; to overcome virgin soil, you just need to put them on the skate.
Yamaha Viking Professional
To increase the cross-country ability of the Viking Professional snowmobile skis, you need to purchase products of this type, the width of which is 260 mm. The pads will improve glide, thereby helping to save a little on fuel, and protect the skis from damage and premature corrosion. Anyone can install them; ski extensions for the Yamaha Viking Professional snowmobile are simply pressed with the studs of the skate.
The length of the product is 1260 mm, these are the kind of pads that are suitable for the Taiga snowmobile, which is produced in Russia. Frost-resistant material can be used even in severe frosts; it is the pad that will help the ski not to freeze to the snow or ice when parked for a long time.
What is a snowmobile
Yamaha snowmobiles are a time-tested guarantee of quality.
The manufacturer produced the first copy back in 1968; since then, the equipment, which in the middle latitudes is used more for entertainment, and in the north is an indispensable means of transportation, confidently walks, or, more precisely, glides across the snow covers of the planet. The suspension is the second most important thing you pay attention to after inspecting the engine. The quality of movement in snowy terrain depends on it; its characteristics affect the progress of the snowmobile through ravines and snowdrifts.
Yamaha Viking received a lot of advantages compared to its previous versions:
- large rear suspension travel - 278 mm, which gives an advantage when driving on uneven terrain;
- caterpillar 50 with 38 hooks - this has significantly improved traction properties on icy and snowy surfaces.
Despite these advantages, some of them smoothly turn into disadvantages, especially if a beginner is driving the snowmobile - with a large suspension travel, you can leave the rear mudguard in the next ravine or “catch” the bottom. Due to the complex design, under extreme use, backlashes quickly appear, which leads to premature repairs.
The Scandic has a stiffer suspension - this is a minus for comfort when moving on dense snow and ice, but a big plus in terms of operation. It is more difficult to kill such a snowmobile, there is simply “nothing to break.”
Both snowmobiles have a telescopic front suspension that can be adjusted. Skandic has a simpler design, a reduced turning radius, which gives an advantage when maneuvering in the forest.
The ruts of the Yamaha Viking are wider, but the Scandic is not inferior in stability due to the low center of gravity. But he gets a huge advantage when moving among the trees.
The rear suspension travel of the Yamaha is greater, but the Scandic has one trick - the mobility of the rear track. It adheres tightly to snow and ice when driving on rough terrain.
The suspension of both snowmobiles is perfectly adapted for movement on snow and ice, but the functionality of the BRP Skandic is wider.
Why do you need ski extensions for a Yamaha snowmobile?
It is not always possible to travel on a snowmobile on well-worn tracks or untouched snow; most of the snow cover is cut by a track made of asphalt or concrete. How to overcome such obstacles and not damage the unit? Is it possible to protect skis from damage in such conditions?
Ski extensions for Yamaha snowmobiles have become an excellent “cover”; they will not only protect the component from wear, but will also help with something else. Ski covers or extensions have many different functions:
- when driving on the road or on the ground, they significantly reduce ski wear;
- increase the snowmobile's cross-country ability on virgin soil if it is of sufficient width;
- will protect your skis from freezing when moving on ice or wet snow;
- will help you overcome snowdrifts and drifts faster.
It is worth understanding that on a knurled track, pads can worsen movement, but on virgin soil, on the contrary, they will speed up, although not significantly.

The heart of the Viking
The snowmobile engine has undergone significant changes. Yamaha engineers did not abandon the reliable and well-proven engine, but began to refine it. As a result, the car received a familiar 535 cc engine with a new flat-throttle carburetor and electric heating. The updated engine design made it possible to increase the power of the unit to 46 hp. and reduce gasoline consumption by a quarter.
The positive effect of the modernization was the stabilization of engine idle speed and easier cold start process. The DC-CDI system, which replaced the analog AC-CD, is responsible for efficient and quick engine starting in the VK 540 V snowmobile.
Reducing fuel consumption has led to a doubling of the vehicle's power reserve on one tank, the volume of which is 44 liters. In the new snowmobile, the tank cap has a fuel quantity indicator.
“The heart of the Viking” works together with an improved three-speed CVT. The user independently selects the type of transmission. Depending on the situation - cargo transportation or high-speed movement - the rider has access to overdrive or downshift gears. To move backwards, reverse gear is used. Gear shifting is carried out using the control lever located on the dashboard.
