Hi all! In this article I will write about the most common problem - why there is no spark on the Alpha moped. And I will write the reasons for her disappearance.
You can check for a spark at the spark plug as follows. We unscrew the spark plug from the cylinder, put a high-voltage cap on it, turn on the ignition, lean the spark plug against the cylinder head and turn the kickstarter foot.
If a spark does not jump at the spark plug electrode, then we begin to look for the reason for its absence.
How to check the spark?
First make sure there really is no spark. To do this, you need to unscrew the spark plug and turn it with the contact into the cap. The housing must be on ground (cylinder). The housing must be in firm contact with the metal. Otherwise, the motorcycle's electrical components may be damaged. Only touch isolated parts. It is advisable to carry out the work in dry rubberized gloves that will not conduct current.
Even easier - put a new candle. If the ignition fires, then the problem has been found. Otherwise, you will have to look further for the reason.
Soot contamination
Type of spark plug: dry soft soot of intense black color on the insulator, electrodes and spark plug body.
Consequences: poor start of the scooter engine; poor operation of a cold scooter engine; interruptions in ignition of the air-fuel mixture; bad reaction to gas.
Probable causes: excessively rich air-fuel mixture; The scooter's air filter is very clogged; The thermal range is incorrectly selected - the candle is too “cold”.
Remedy: adjust the working mixture; adjust the cold start system of the scooter engine; change the scooter air filter; clean the spark plugs or replace them with new ones - with the correct heat rating.
Power check
In order for a spark to jump between the spark plug electrodes, the commutator capacitor must be charged from something. And it is charged either from a battery or from a generator. Means what? Right! We check whether power is supplied to the switch.
Before you start measuring power, let’s determine what type of switch is on your scooter. Visually, switches of the DC CDI type are twice as large as AC CDI. But this is not an exact criterion. The most accurate criterion is to look at the output of the high-voltage coil of the generator:
- If it is not activated, it means that your scooter is equipped with a DC CDI type switch
- If enabled, then vice versa - your scooter is equipped with an AC CDI type switch
The output of the high-voltage coil of the generator is located in the same place as the output of the generator itself: we are looking for where the wires coming from the generator are connected to the on-board network of the scooter and if one of the two wires with round terminals is not connected, then the coil is not activated

- After work we were going to go home, but my friend’s moped didn’t start. He unscrewed the spark plug, there was no spark, replaced it with another one, the same result. Since it was one o’clock in the morning, he pushed his moped to my garage, and I drove him home ( he lives in a neighboring village). In the morning I decided to see what the reason was. First, I checked all the contacts, then I rang the armor wire with a multimeter, then I changed the coil (I have it in stock). There was still no spark, then I changed the switch (I removed it from my moped) , but the spark never appeared. But when I checked, the current from the armored wire began to flow and I decided to try to install my own spark plug, as it turned out the whole problem was in the chip from the switch, the contacts went loose there, but when the spark disappeared, the owner changed the spark plug to a non-sparking one working. His second spare one was also not working. In the end, of course, I found a malfunction, but it could have been found faster. I concluded for myself that in any case it is necessary to check the functionality of the spark plug (even if they only installed another one before your eyes)) ), well, the owner didn’t draw any conclusions and I’m waiting for him again in my garage soon))). Naturally, not everything was included in the video, since it would have turned out to be a very long video, so I had to cut something out.

Control and management bodies
The presence of informative devices makes the operation of the moped quite simple, which attracts many buyers. Moreover, which is typical, a fairly large number of beginners decide to buy a two-wheeled vehicle
, choosing Alpha

Ignition coil
If everything looks intact, check the ignition coil. To do this, disconnect it (remembering how the wires are connected) and use a multimeter to check the resistance of the windings.
The primary winding is made of thicker copper wire. Its terminals are connected to two terminal connectors at the end of the coil. It has a small number of turns and therefore its resistance is low, approximately 0.5-5 Ohms. One wire of the coil is connected to ground - you need to check it, attach one multimeter probe to the nearest metal part of the moped, and the second to the coil connector. The resistance should be close to zero.
The high-voltage coil consists of several thousand turns of very thin copper wire, so its resistance should be on the order of 2-5 kOhms. The resistance must be measured between the coil contact connected to ground and the core of the high-voltage wire.
In this way, we will check the coil for a break, but without special equipment we cannot check for other coil faults, for example, an interturn short circuit, so we will leave the coil alone for now, also because a coil without visible mechanical damage is most likely working.
A helmet for cycling is not required, but is advisable.
According to the traffic rules of the Russian Federation, a helmet is required only for moped drivers. But traffic police inspectors, when issuing licenses to schoolchildren, check for the presence of a helmet. The exam is accepted only if it is available.
They also warn parents about the responsibility of children riding without helmets and the risk of serious injury. A helmet protects the bicycle driver during impacts and falls. It reduces the likelihood of traumatic brain injury by 63-88%.
A child can ride a bicycle on the roads from the age of 14, but a license is required and protective equipment is desirable: a helmet and special glasses. If you explain all the dangers of Russian roads, you can easily convince your child to use what is necessary.
Switch
Even a beginner will find its location. This is a plastic box with a terminal block. Multi-colored wires are connected to it. The switch is necessary to control the operation of the ignition system. Both the switch and the ignition coil are made non-separable. If the element fails, then the problems can only be solved by replacement. The price of these parts is low - up to 500 rubles. Some service stations have special instruments that allow you to test the switch. However, in order to avoid searching for the appropriate services for a long time, the easiest way is to purchase a new switch. In the process of searching for the reason for the failure of the switch, you do not need to listen to “experts” who claim that the failure occurred due to driving without a battery. This is an unreliable opinion. The fact is that in modern scooters the power supply system and the ignition system do not depend on each other in any way.
How to check for spark
If you are not sure that the problem is precisely that there is no spark on the scooter , then you need to check. Unscrew the spark plug and insert it into the armored wire. Turn the key to start the scooter and touch the candle to any iron surface. We press the kickstarter, preferably not just once but several times, then we look at the candle. If there is no spark on the spark plug, then the guess is correct. The spark may be difficult to see in clear weather, so it is better to do it in a dark place or at least in the shade.
No spark through the ignition system
If you installed a new spark plug and the problem remains, then you are the one who is unlucky. Almost always the problem is in the spark plug itself, but there are exceptions when the ignition system is to blame. In your case there is no spark on the 2t or 4t scooter through the contacts. Check the condition of the wires and terminals, the problem is somewhere there. And be careful with the spark, because at first it is not strong, but when it goes through all the necessary stages, the voltage increases hundreds of times.
Second phase
Knowledge about braking will help preserve your health while moving. How to drive a moped? Learn thoughtfully and at the moment when the situation on the road requires it. Braking may not seem like a difficult task, but even a small mistake can cause serious injury and danger to others.
To avoid unpleasant incidents, follow certain points:
- Start the braking process in advance, when you have calculated the end point of your stop.
- Use not only the rear brake, but also the front brake.
- There is no need to perform sharp braking, as this creates a danger for other active road users.
- Constantly monitor the technical condition of the entire brake system. Wet or faulty pads can interfere with braking performance.
- Consider weather conditions - they affect the braking distance, as well as the full effectiveness of the braking system.
- Remember that on poor quality road surfaces it becomes much more difficult to calculate the trajectory and the braking distance itself. Therefore, be careful when you see changes in the asphalt or other road surface along your immediate route of travel.
If simple rules are not followed, a moped can easily hit curbs, collide with other vehicles or pedestrians. Sometimes dangerous skidding occurs and even the driver falls. When your successful movement is over, it is recommended to turn off the engine
Pay attention to the future parking space. Professionals do not advise leaving your scooter on slopes or on poor road surfaces.
Why the moped won’t start: three main reasons and testing method:
I have this situation. The moped does not start, everything seems to be fine. There is a spark, gasoline flows, but when you unscrew the spark plug, it is in gasoline, you unscrew it back and the same thing happens. The moped seems to be trying to start, but something is preventing it from starting. Compression is normal. Please help me. I haven’t been able to start my moped for half a year now.
The first thing to do is replace the spark plug with a new, dry and known good one. The second thing is to replace the gasoline with fresh one: completely drain the old one from the tank and from the carburetor, and then fill it with new one from a good gas station (preferably not the one where you last refueled). During a cold start, the air damper must be closed. If after this there is no improvement, then most likely the problem is in the carburetor. Perhaps the fuel level in the float chamber is too high and excess gasoline flows into the combustion chamber and floods the spark plug. If the carburetor has a fitting for draining condensate, you can put a transparent tube on the fitting, lift it up and unscrew the drain screw. The gas valve on the tank must be open. Gasoline, according to the principle of communicating vessels, will rise in a transparent tube to the same level as in the carburetor. The level should not be higher than the gasket between the carburetor halves (upper and lower). If the level in the carburetor is normal, there is a (small) chance that the flywheel has turned on the crankshaft. Although there is a spark, it’s not at that moment. The simplest thing to check is with a strobe light at the marks on the flywheel. Or remove the flywheel with a puller and put it on again. Good luck with the renovation!
It's difficult to start, it runs for about 30 seconds and stalls, but if you give it gas it dies right away. New piston with all accessories
If it doesn't start after replacing the piston, the first thing I would check is the compression. If there is no compression with the new piston, it means there was a mistake during assembly: either the camshaft is set incorrectly, or the compression ring is broken, perhaps the valve clearances are not set. Apparently, everything is in order with your ignition system and fuel is flowing, since the moped still starts. You can also check the carburetor, but if you didn’t mess with it during repairs, most likely everything is fine with it. You can also check if there is any air leakage after the carburetor; perhaps the gasket is broken somewhere.
I have this situation, I was riding a moped and it suddenly stalled. Afterwards, attempts to start it with an electric starter were unsuccessful. The next attempt was to start the kick starter, the result was the same. The engine doesn't turn over at all. All electrical equipment works (except for the electric starter). Help, what to do?
In the article I gave the order of actions that need to be performed to understand the reason. Without doing all this, you can only guess what the reason is.
Hello! Same problem. I did the steps described, but there is still no spark!
And she shouldn't appear. All actions are described here to understand the reason. There is no spark - this is the reason that the moped does not start. This means you need to check the ignition system: spark plug, coil, high-voltage wire, switch, generator, ignition switch and other wiring. If it was working and working and suddenly stopped, I would first ring the generator, maybe a wire has broken there.
Tell me what to do please. From the beginning there was no spark, I did a lot of work, replaced the generator, spark plug, switch, ignition relay, everything new. It started, but the carburetor started firing, drove it in the evening and left it overnight, couldn’t start in the morning, the carburetor fires and won’t let it start, gasoline comes in, the spark plug is black as coal (but I cleaned it and put it back in). After all these shots, I cleaned the carburetor inside and out, but to no avail. There is a nuance, the moped stood for a week without a candle on the street but was covered, maybe dirt got in or something else, I don’t know which direction to move. Tell me what to do please, thanks in advance. Moped Alpha zw50q2
The first thing I would check is whether the marks on the gas distribution mechanism match and whether the valves are jammed (I wrote out the instructions for adjusting the valves in detail). If possible, check the compression. Perhaps the intake valve is not sealing tightly and gases are shooting into the carburetor. You can also try replacing the gasoline with fresh gasoline from a good gas station. If the flywheel (generator rotor) was removed, you need to check that it is installed correctly, i.e. remove and reinstall along the guide key. If all this does not help, the problem is in the carburetor. Check the fuel level in the carburetor. Well, adjust the composition of the mixture at idle.
Why won't it start, the pipe is leaking, what's the problem?
This is interesting: Basic mistakes that can be made when using WD-40
If it shoots at the muffler, then you need to check that the valve clearance is set correctly. Instructions here. Perhaps there are simply no gaps and the exhaust valve does not close. And when checking the gaps, you also need to check the coincidence of the marks on the flywheel and the sprockets of the head.
I have a Karpaty moped, everything is new. It won’t start without starting, and not with the starter, and the piston cylinder block (so healthy gray) has one of its ribs broken, could this be a problem in starting?
No, broken cooling fins should not be the reason why the engine will not start.

hello, I hope you can help me, I changed the central wiring on the alpha moped, I also changed the spark plug in the place with the armor wire and I have no sparks and the current doesn’t flow anywhere except from the ignition coil and that’s all what could be the reason
damn what to do please tell me I was riding an alpha 71kb moped and it started to stall and stalled and would not start again and I changed the spark plug and cleaned the corberator and it still did not start. And when you start it with your foot, sometimes it can shoot out of the pipe. Please tell me how to make a moped
Dmitry If the carburetor is in order and there is a spark, but the moped does not start, look at the valve head.
I can't start, can you help me?)
Why the hell are there extraneous sounds on the video, and so essentially nothing is said, so there are also extraneous sounds on the video.
Thank you very much helped
How much does armor wire cost?
help, I have no spark on my Verkhovina moped, what should I do?
Vitya Shapeev haha me too)
Hello everyone, take a look at my channel, I make different videos
Please give me some advice on why the Alpha moped does not have a spark, but it starts and there is a spark from the foot, the starter is spinning.
sprint 150cc spark not working
Where are you, I'll get you a motorcycle
Hello, how much does it cost to put a step on an Alfa moped?
Hello, I wanted to ask you, so I bought a 50 cc engine from an Alpha or Delta! And what do I need to buy to start it, what kind of wiring, so that it just starts from the kickstarter, basically from the stand!
Hello, I have such a problem. In the left cover, the coil was screwed onto 2 bolts, it turned out that 1 bolt was unscrewed and broke inside, there is a small hole on the magnet. I replaced the generator coil, ignition coil, and switch. Still no spark. Don't know what the problem is?
Denis, I have a spark, but it’s weak (it seems so to me). When starting with electric ignition, there is no such a confident sound (grinding), but a barely audible scrolling of the coil. What could this be?
Please tell me why there is no spark at the spark plug? I replaced the ignition coil, switch, and generator with new ones, still no =(.
I have the same problem((
Most likely the central wire (which fits the spark plug) needs to be replaced.
I have the same problem
Hello, I have a Trophy moped, such a problem happened when I turn on the turn signals they don’t blink and the dashboard doesn’t show that they are working either, what’s the matter, did I change the turn signals, maybe something wrong with the electronics?
+Denis Valerievich Thank you!
Most likely the turn signal relay has failed.
Reasons why the spark disappeared on the Alpha moped
Mopeds made in China break down quite often, this depends not only on poor-quality parts, it is important to operate the moped correctly and monitor the condition of its parts. But many owners of Alpha mopeds are faced with a problem when their vehicle simply does not start. After reviewing most of the possible causes, the owner notices that there is no spark on the moped. Without a spark, the moped will not start, and there can be several reasons for the breakdown. Most of the reasons are quite banal and lie in minor breakdowns, but if all the steps below do not help, you will have to completely rebuild the moped or take it to a specialist. Diagnosis of lack of spark is carried out in several procedures below.
First stage
The scooter that you decide to constantly use must undergo technical inspections to eliminate undesirable consequences during the period of active use. In this case, you should not save, since the driver’s health very often depends on the condition and quality of the vehicle.
To begin with, it is worth remembering that the vehicle’s maneuverability, controllability and predictability directly depend on the correct and high-quality technical condition of the moped. Before starting the journey, it is recommended to check the level of each fluid in the moped. Carefully monitor the amount of oil so as not to provoke the process of engine jamming. Start the scooter on a central support or stand - this will prevent incorrect and accidental movement while the engine is warming up.
Basic repair methods
The generator produces the spark, so the first thing you should do is inspect it: check the integrity of all wires and contacts that are adjacent to the generator. Then carry out diagnostics of condensates. Sometimes a spark may not appear due to mechanical damage on the generator, so it is worth carefully examining its winding. If there is a serious defect, it is better not to repair it, but simply replace it with a new part.
Quite often, a spark does not occur due to a malfunction of the spark plugs, which are consumables that regularly fail. For this reason, it is worth checking these elements for damage. Pay special attention to the color of the candle - it should be clean and without any soot. If the spark plugs are broken, they should be replaced.
On an Alpha moped, the cause of a weak spark or its complete absence may be the use of a discharged battery. You need to constantly monitor the battery charge. Most of the batteries used on this motorcycle produce 12 volts, so during testing the battery should show at least 9 volts. If it shows a lower value, then you need to either charge or change the battery.
Cleaning carbon deposits
Having found out why there is a black spark plug on the Alpha moped and what the problem is, you need to fix the problem. After this, you can install a new part or try to restore the functionality of the old spark plug. To do this, you need to rinse it by performing several sequential steps:
- Rust cleaner is poured into a glass.
- The candle is dipped into the prepared liquid for half an hour.
- When the carbon deposits soften, it must be carefully cleaned off (use a brush).
- Under the pressure of water, the candle is washed to remove any remaining dirt.
- Wipe the part dry with a clean rag and leave to dry at temperatures up to +70°C (in the oven or on a radiator).
Do not use sandpaper when cleaning. Aggressive impact will damage the protective top layer. Because of this, the part will quickly become unusable.
Breaks in the spark plug cap
This reason can also be considered simple. If there is no spark on the scooter, you should remove the cap and then check its resistance level. After disconnecting the cap from the wire, take measurements. The multimeter probe is inserted into the spark plug hole. The other is attached to the pin that the wires go to. If the cap is working properly, the multimeter will show about 5 kOhm. On most modern scooters, the high-voltage wires, spark plug cap and ignition coil are made one-piece.
All these parts are filled with rubber or compound. Therefore, you can test the cap, wire and ignition coil as a whole. One of the probes of the device is inserted into the spark plug hole on the cap. The second is connected to the ignition coil. This is how the resistance on the primary and secondary windings and the high-voltage wire itself are revealed. The reading on the primary winding should be between 0.1 ohm and 0.4 ohm.
Secondary resistance ranges from 6.35 ohms to 9.7 ohms on most scooters. Sometimes a high-voltage wire becomes unusable. To replace it, you need a cable with a metal core. A car part with carbon filler is not suitable for this procedure.
Breaks in electrical wiring
This happens very often, especially on Chinese-made scooters. Here, wire breaks in the ignition system are possible.
The reason may also be oxidized contacts and terminals. Do-it-yourself scooter repair, in this case, consists of checking the integrity of all wires in the ignition system. Also pay attention to the terminals. If the contacts are oxidized or do not hold tightly, then they should be cleaned and tightened. It would be a good idea to check the wire that comes from the switch. You need to make sure the connection is secure and the terminal is clean.
Oil contamination
Type of spark plug: wet oily black deposits on the insulator, black oil deposits on the insulator, electrodes and spark plug body.
Consequences: poor start of the scooter engine, interruptions in ignition.
Probable causes: too much oil in the fuel mixture (for two-stroke engines); wear of the rings and/or piston liner - wastes oil.
Remedy: mix gasoline and oil in the correct proportion, install new spark plugs for the scooter (for two-stroke engines); inspect the condition of the scooter engine, if necessary, repair the engine, CPG; .
Condition of the spark plug and its malfunction
The simplest way is external verification. If it has a normal color and looks natural, the part is most likely working. Signs of use such as erosion and sediment from long-term use are acceptable. When a vehicle's fuel mixture becomes too rich, the result affects not only the engine, but primarily the spark plug itself. Thus, black dry deposits appear in some areas. , as well as replacing the air filter, will help correct the situation Do not use a dirty or damaged spark plug, otherwise the engine will not operate properly and will soon need repairs. This is one of the reasons that answers the question of why there is no spark on the scooter ?
There have also been many cases when the wrong amount of oil entered the engine, which contributed to the contamination of the spark plug. It is easy to distinguish carbon deposits from oil contamination; examples are in the photo. And according to statistics, such malfunctions occur precisely with 2t scooters that have an oil pump. Immediately replace the spark plug in the oil with a new one.
Overheat
Plug Type: Extremely white insulator with small black flecks and premature electrode erosion.
Consequences: loss of scooter power at high speed or under load.
Probable causes: the spark plug is not screwed in enough; The scooter's engine cooling system is not working properly; ignition of the scooter too early; The thermal range is incorrectly selected - the candle is too “hot”.
Remedy: check the torque of the scooter's spark plug; operation of the scooter engine cooling system; adjust the ignition timing; select the correct spark plug heat rating.
Type of spark plug: melted and burned central and grounding electrodes (or one of the electrodes) of the scooter spark plug; bubbling insulator with metal deposits on it.
Consequences: significant loss of scooter engine power; ignition interruptions. Continued use of such spark plugs may cause serious damage to the scooter engine.
Probable causes: thermal overload; significant overheating of spark plug parts due to glow ignition - combustion begins before a proper ignition spark appears; use of low-quality fuel; burning out of the remaining air-fuel mixture in the combustion chamber due to an incorrectly adjusted fuel system of the scooter or the ignition timing of the scooter; The thermal range is incorrectly selected - the spark plug is too “hot”.
Remedy: check the scooter engine, ignition system and fuel system, as well as the quality of the working mixture and the ignition timing of the scooter. Install new spark plugs with the correct heat rating.
There is no spark on the moped - what to do?
Failure of a motorcycle ignition system can be caused by a variety of reasons, ranging from small and insignificant to serious ones requiring major repairs of the vehicle. Fortunately, bikes are technologically relatively simple (compared to cars) and you can fix the breakdown yourself. Very often, the reason for the incorrect operation of the ignition system is that there is simply no spark on the motorcycle. In this case, it is necessary to accurately identify the part or assembly that led to the breakdown.
- Spark Plug Inspection
If there is no spark on a moped or motorcycle, first of all, you need to check the serviceability of the spark plug . It should not be excessively dirty and be of a natural color. If the motorcycle owner has a 100% serviceable spark plug on hand, then test the operation of the ignition system with its help.
Reasons for the formation of black soot
So why are spark plugs black? The accuracy of determining the causes of soot entirely depends on the analysis of its structure. The main forms of soot are dry (soot) and oily.
Experts believe that the main reason for the formation of black soot deposits is excessive enrichment of the fuel mixture. A motorist who is concerned about the condition of his car’s spark plugs simply needs to know the factors influencing increased enrichment of the fuel mixture:
- Malfunctions or incorrect carburetor settings.
- Due to a lack of oxygen flow due to a clogged air filter, complete combustion of the fuel mixture does not occur.
- Problems with the starting enrichment.
- The presence of increased pressure in the fuel rail (for injection power plants) contributes to excessive fuel injection. Occurs due to malfunctions of the fuel pressure regulator.
- Low compression value in one or more cylinders.
- Weak spark.
However, excessive enrichment of the air-fuel mixture is not the only answer to the question: “Why are spark plugs black?” There are several other reasons that influence (albeit to a lesser extent) the coating of spark plug electrodes with black soot. Here they are:
- Malfunction of the ignition coil.
- The air filter element is clogged.
- Increased (reduced) gap of the breaker-distributor.
- Capacitor failure.
- Incorrect operation of the injection system.
Another reason that leads to the appearance of black carbon deposits on automobile spark plugs and requires immediate elimination is the installation of spark plugs whose heat rating does not correspond to the parameter specified by the manufacturer. In this case, two options are possible:
- unburnt remains of the fuel-air mixture settle on the spark plug elements, forming a coating;
- The spark plug heats up under the influence of high temperatures, and the power unit begins to operate in glow ignition mode.
If the carbon structure shows signs of oiliness, then the car owner receives direct evidence of excess oil entering the combustion chamber. The main reasons for the formation of oily deposits on the spark plug electrodes are excessive wear:
- oil valve caps;
- oil scraper piston rings.
