The KTM Duke is a family that is recognizable on the streets and already has a whole army of fans. It is therefore not surprising that KTM continues to develop the model. In any family there has to be someone especially big and scary, here the KTM 1290 Super Duke R takes that crown. The 2022 model was developed under the name “The Beast 3.0”.
"The most anticipated motorcycles of 2022"
The first of its kind was born in 2014 - the 1290 Super Duke R based on the LC8 KTM engine. In 2022, the engine received a number of electronic and mechanical updates. This was the second generation - “The Beast 2.0”.
“The Beast 3.0” has become even angrier, even lighter, even more dangerous. Is he as good as expected?
“Unsuccessful motorcycles for a beginner - what are they?”
Major weight loss
One of the main tasks that the creators of the new model solved was the total lightweighting of the motorcycle. According to the manufacturers, almost 90% of the third generation Super Duke R has been revised.
The dimensions of the stiffening ribs have been reduced as much as is realistically possible! And with this simple technique, the engine became lighter by as much as 800 grams! Next, the layout of the oil lines in the engine changed. Because of this, it not only became lighter, but also eliminated some friction losses. Even the cooling pump is not so weighty now.
The exhaust system has lost a kilogram. The gearbox, manufactured by Pankl Racing Systems, is not only lightweight, but also has a short throw. Speaking of the gearbox, there is the possibility of adjustment and access to a longer stroke.
The frame lost a couple of kilos and the traverse lost another 200 grams. Lightweight aluminum and carbon subframe. The central parts of the structure are thinner than at the attachment points and on the ribs. The motorcycle has noticeably lost weight. Now his dry weight is 195 kilograms.

Engine update
At the moment, the LC8 twin is really the most powerful from KTM, although it is similar to the previous one - also 1301 cubic centimeters and a cylinder camber of 75 degrees. But the engine gained only three horsepower compared to its second-generation brother. The exhaust produces 177 horsepower and a peak torque of 140 Nm at 8000 rpm. By the way, at low and medium speeds it is now also vigorous, which might have been lacking before. Looking ahead, the increase in power has been achieved while simultaneously addressing the problems caused by strict Euro 4/5 emissions regulations. For this purpose, the exhaust system is equipped with two catalytic converters.
The increased performance is due to the addition of shower head nozzles, which are located on each of the two inlet pipes. Thus, the grinding of fuel and atomization of the combustible mixture at upper speeds is more efficient.
For the engine to work better, it needs to “breathe” well. Engineers used the principle of inertial supercharging. The previous model had dual air intakes, while the third generation uses a central air intake. It was placed between the headlights and increased by as much as a quarter - by 2.8 liters. The intake itself is covered with a grille to protect it from foreign objects.
Added to this is a completely updated exhaust system. It's not just easy. To equalize the difference due to the length of the manifold pipes (depending on the cylinder), the head pipe on the rear cylinder is made larger in diameter than that of the front.
Frame, swingarm and handling
KTM said that by lightening the frame, torsional rigidity has been increased. An interesting fact is that the engine itself is part of the supporting structure, which is now three times stiffer than the previous model.
Due to the fact that the engine in the frame was raised by 38 millimeters, the center of gravity became higher.
The angle of the steering column has increased, and the yoke has moved forward by three millimeters. Traill remained unchanged. But they are already saying that in turns such innovations only benefit the pilot.
The single-sided pendulum has also become lighter, but according to manufacturers, it is 15 percent stiffer and even longer. The WP Apex multifunctional suspension has many adjustment options. This makes it easy for the motorcycle to adapt to the owner, riding style and road quality. In total, such indicators add a lot of points to the motorcycle stability and controllability department.
KTM 1290 Super Adventure is the first new model of 2022 with adaptive cruise control
The new 2022 KTM 1290 Super Adventure S super tourer is the first production motorcycle to be equipped with a functioning adaptive cruise control system. What else is new in the flagship 1300cc hyperenduro?
MOTOGONKI.RU, February 2, 2022 - KTM Adventure with the engine of the new LC8 platform is already 8 years old. Introduced in 2013, the 1190 Adventure looked impressive and impressed test drivers with its absolute permissiveness, both on and off-road. Easy to control, fast and stable, the touring enduro soon received a new version with a larger engine, becoming the 1290 Super Adventure.
KTM 1290 Super Adventure (2021)
Exclusive test drive of the KTM 1290 Super Adventure on MOTOGONKI.RU - then the motorcycle actually set a new bar in the industry. After its appearance, the words “R1200GS killer” took on a different meaning: the Super Adventure KTM embodied all the most modern developments that were once created for MotoGP and World Superbike, but implemented specifically in a road motorcycle - semi-automatic suspension with adaptation to road conditions, a sensitive inertial platform , smart brakes with cornering skid control, cruise control, advanced engine braking systems, and so on.
KTM 1290 Super Adventure (2021)
After 2022, KTM motorcycles with a large engine capacity have become more of an exclusive chic in Russia than a trend due to the ever-increasing price tag, which made the motorcycle inaccessible to the vast majority of fans of the brand: today its price is more than 2 million rubles. for Super Adventure S and R models...
But the fact is that Mattighofen did not stop there
The next step was the introduction of the most advanced road safety technology - adaptive cruise control!
The adaptive control radar is located directly under the headlight
The radar, which assesses the situation ahead of the motorcycle, is located directly under the headlight. It scans the space, and if the Super Adventure is driving in traffic and the cruise mode is activated, the new feature will not allow you to dig into the car or bike in front: by controlling the electronic throttle, the motorcycle will either accelerate, maintaining the speed of the flow, or brake, activating the actuator C-ABS systems. The system was developed by Bosch and includes a lot of new-fangled developments that bring us closer to a bright, safe future when different vehicles will interact with each other, preventing accidents.
The premium grand tourer's 7-inch control panel is the KTM 1290 Super Adventure S
All the necessary information about the trip is shown on the huge 7-inch color screen of the control panel. The panel is now a full-fledged on-board computer with a built-in communication module. The KTM handlebar controls have also been completely redesigned for better ergonomics. Changing setups on the fly is carried out intuitively; there is no need to switch attention or be distracted from the road.
KTM 1290 Super Adventure (2021)
Ergonomics have been improved overall, not just in the control panel area. Small changes to the frame, subframe and rear wheel swingarm have improved weight distribution; The steering column was moved back 15 mm to change the points of application of forces, so that the motorcycle became more manageable in corners (but it was already very nimble for its size!)
The new 23-liter gas tank is hidden under the cover and has a pocket for a smartphone
The 23-liter gas tank is equipped with a keyless cap, but it now has one more feature: a lockable pocket for a mobile phone with a USB connector inside.
Engine KTM LC8 1301 cc.
Engine capacity 1301 cc. with a power of 160 hp. and a torque of 138 Nm fully meets the new Euro5 requirements, and it is 1.6 kg lighter thanks to the use of high-pressure thin-walled engine covers and crankcase technology. The service interval is 15,000 km.
Semi-automatic suspension WP APEX
The new generation WP APEX semi-automatic suspension is controlled, as in 2015, by a separate control unit under the control of a 6-axis IMU. The IMU analyzes the motorcycle's position in space, driving dynamics and frequency, as well as the travel of the fork dampers, constantly changing the spring rate. The purpose of such manipulations is to create a constant and equal distribution of the load on both wheels, which significantly reduces the risk of each of them falling off on strong slopes.
KTM 1290 Super Adventure (2021)
To highlight the power and coolness of the WP suspension, KTM took the Super Adventure S to an old abandoned race track in Italy and launched the bike onto the nearly vertical bank where formula cars raced in the '70s.
Jeremy McWilliams, the “KTM man” and a completely frostbitten motorcycle racer who participates in all the promotions and tests of the Austrian plant, noted (note, with regret!) that in this photo it’s not him, but another guy; but “the filming was extremely difficult and very dangerous,” and “he would be careful not to do this on any other motorcycle.” At the same time, McVil was participating in another photo shoot at a nearby track - he is working on the KTM 1290 Super Duke program.
Wheels, tires, brakes
You have already noticed that the words “new” and “light” are applied to almost any part of the motorcycle... Therefore, the principle is the same here. Bridgestone S22 tires are the result of a joint effort between KTM and Bridgestone. The point is that the rear wheel has a softer frame, which has a positive effect on the contact patch and maneuvering when exiting turns.
“Motor tires - what is the difference with a car tire?”
We immediately see cast five-spoke aluminum alloy wheels. The front brake is a 320mm disc with Brembo 4-piston monobloc calipers, while the rear is a 240mm Brembo twin-piston fixed caliper. due to this particular system - minus another 90 grams of weight.
MY MOTORCYCLE
On October 4, at the Cologne International Motor Show Intermot-2016, KTM presented the new flagships of its model line: the completely new KTM 1290 Super Adventure R and KTM 1290 Super Adventure S.
The R version traditionally features improved off-road performance and is primarily intended for use on roads with poor quality road surfaces, dirt tracks and rough terrain.
The letter S, on the contrary, denotes a road character and a model with this index is designed for traveling on asphalt.
Both new products do not replace, but complement the base model, which from 2017 will receive the T (Travel) index and will now be clearly focused on the long-distance segment, maintaining a 30-liter fuel tank, while the S and R versions have a 23-liter tank. All models are equipped with the same LC8 engine with a displacement of 1301 cm3 and a power of 160 hp. and a torque of 140 Nm. A variety of electronic systems will help the driver cope with such energy levels, including the MSC stabilization system, tilt-able ABS and traction control.
The motorcycles have three switchable riding modes - Sport, Street and Rain. Version R is also equipped with the so-called. “offroad package”, which allows you to turn off ABS on the rear wheel, while braking at the front remains under control. Offroad mode also changes the traction control mode, allowing the rear wheel to slip.
The most obvious differences between the R and S versions are their wheels: the R gets spoked wheels measuring 18″ at the rear and 21″ at the front, equipped with Continental Trail Attack or Continental TKC80 enduro tires. Tire pressure information is available to the driver along with other information on the new 6.5″ TFT screen.
The headlights of the new motorcycles are completely LED. Like their predecessor, the new products have LED cornering lights, which are activated by a signal from the motorcycle's tilt sensor and make driving at night much easier.
Also standard is cruise control, a waterproof cell phone holder with a USB port, keyless ignition and a 3D foam seat for superior comfort on long motorcycle trips.
Options include HHC Hill Hold Control, MSR Slip Control and a KTM Quick Shifter that operates both down and up, in perfect coordination with other engine management systems.
The brake system on both wheels is Brembo. The front brakes are built on a pair of radial four-piston calipers and 320 mm discs. At the rear there is a 267 mm brake disc.
The off-road R model's suspension is fully adjustable WP with 220 mm of front and rear travel. An inverted front fork with spring preload and a rear shock absorber with progressive characteristics, indispensable in bad road and off-road conditions.
The 1290 Adventure S features semi-active WP suspension with four selectable damping modes.

Ergonomics
The aggressive design of the motorcycle is due not only to the desire to emphasize the sporting features of the model. But the manufacturers do not hide that the KTM 1290 Super Duke R has a place both in the city and on the track. If you look closely at the fairing and consider how it affects aerodynamics, the true meaning of the design becomes clear - creating downforce at the front of the motorcycle. And from all this, a sporty landing reasonably follows.
“Aerodynamics of a motorcycle - what does it consist of?”
“Motorcycle ergonomics - what is it?”
An unexpected solution is the design of the landing at the tank, which should give more comfort and confidence to the pilot in braking. However, with the new structure of the air intake and this landing, the tank lost almost two liters of volume.
The control system deserves special attention. According to the manufacturer, enough time was spent on developing the remote controls so that the driver has everything he needs “at hand.” But there is no longer a “track” mode in stock; you will have to be content with the basic ones: rain, road and sports. Although it should be noted that the KTM 1290 Super Duke R is not offended by electronics, if you need to prepare it for serious races, you can always achieve the desired result by installing the necessary options. Not for free, of course.
If you want the Quickshifter feature, you'll have to spend some money because it's available as an optional extra. That's what's missing in stock form!
Hello everyone, bikepost residents! Oh, it’s been a while since I wrote anything here, and there were just so many reasons for this, so I immediately apologize for the stiffness of the language and the chosen phrases in places. I decided to share my opinion, experience, pain and delight about the KTM 1290 Super Adventure R motorcycle, which replaced the BMW 800 GS in my possession. I will try to make this short and structured. So who cares, as they say, welcome to the cut! What we have for input: KTM SAR 2022, with mileage ±40,000 km. (purchased with a mileage of 30,000 km.) And it just so happened that during this year I traveled about 10 thousand kilometers, most of which were on a trip to our North Caucasus, but at the same time the motorcycle was also used for numerous trips around the city, morning traffic jams up to office and several local trips to the region, such as the Pokatushka “On the Road with Boars” with Dima mirage I will divide my experience into three large parts:
- Doubts and concerns before purchasing
- Advantages and disadvantages
- General impressions after a season on off-road and asphalt
Doubts and concerns before purchasing
I’ll say right away that I’ll immediately pass by the aura and decoding of the abbreviation KTM, known in narrow circles, because this topic is already a long-standing one and probably everyone understands everything.
From all the information that I collected and googled before purchasing, several important parameters for me made me think seriously, such as the height and weight of the motorcycle, the inconsistency of information about fuel consumption with power reserve, and stories about the seat heating up from the manifold and quite a bit - a little about wobbling at speeds over 160 km/h. Definitely, everyone who is shorter than 180 centimeters tall can definitely be given advice before buying - at least try to sit on a motorcycle, and ideally do some kind of test drive, preferably with an exit from flat roads at least onto gravel. When I first met them, I could only reach the asphalt with the toes of my boots, and it seemed to me that touring motorcycle boots would solve this problem for me, due to the high soles. But, looking ahead - no, a miracle did not happen (my height is 182) and at first in the city I experienced a little discomfort, which was most likely associated with the bright contrast of the confident foot placement at 800 geese, but over time this discomfort disappeared somewhere and now it's not there at all. At the same time, it’s still not easy with the height of the motorcycle off-road - one morning, in the mountains of Chechnya, something went wrong for me and I fell over twice just on the spot. And if with the goose there were chances to somehow fight and hold the motorcycle, here in both cases he left me no chance. But at the same time, the wild locomotive traction easily coped with this weight on any incline, even on loose surfaces. On descents, of course, it pulls down, but it seems to me that it’s worth paying more attention to my off-road skill, which I consider to be at an average level, and then, by increasing my skill, to increase the confidence in controlling the motorcycle on descents on rocks, gravel, and so on. If anything, I’m talking about a fairly good degree of descent, for example the Makazhoy - Nochkhi Kaloi pass, which will forever remain in my heart.
When talking about a motorcycle for travel, an important factor is the power reserve. The 1290 Adventure has a 23-liter tank, but various reviews stated consumption of 7.8 and even 10 liters per hundred. Of course, everyone should understand that consumption depends on the operating environment and the degree of unscrewing of the handle. I confess that for a long time I have been sticking to speed limits on long-distance trips plus a free 20 kilometers on top. And then I was pleasantly surprised, because over 7,000 kilometers of long-distance driving, the average consumption settled at 4.8 liters per 100 km. The power reserve with such indicators tends to an impressive 450-500 kilometers. But at the same time, in the mountains, off-road, this consumption increases significantly, I have not found how to display the instantaneous consumption (probably there is no such possibility), but it feels like the indicators tend to 7-7.5 liters per hundred. And this is worth taking into account when you climb some route, because the power reserve is specifically reduced. With a heated seat, everything is simple, here KTM even took care of you and glued a thin layer of thermal protection to the back side. In the city you can feel a little heat and the seat is heated, but I wouldn’t say that it causes wild discomfort. Well, a few words about wobbling - this particular motorcycle doesn’t have it, but there was a very interesting incident on our return on the M4 highway, where a 1290 rushed past us at a speed of over 150 km/h, although it had square panniers attached, and from the rear view This motorcycle specifically wobbled. I don’t know what this could be connected with, just as I can’t confirm the fact that all 1290 were wobbled.
Advantages and disadvantages
It’s worth making a reservation right away here - in this section we will talk specifically about the ergonomic pros and cons, and for me the advantages of this motorcycle more than outweigh the meager set of shortcomings I found. I would like to start about the advantages with the main thing - LED head optics.
Farah copes with her task 100%; the guys on the trip even gave her the proud nickname “Scorcher.” There is a cornering light function, and unlike BMW, KTM took a simpler path and tied the additionally switched headlight sections to the motorcycle's tilt angle sensor. I’m very pleased with the keyless access, which turned out to be especially convenient on long-distance trips. Probably many people know the situation when traveling when you need to stop, quickly get something or put it in a trunk and move on. So, in my case, I had to turn off the motorcycle to get the key, or carry a spare one with me and constantly take it out (which increases the risk of losing the spare key). At the same time, the gas filler cap also received this wonderful feature.
The motorcycle display is also impossible to ignore - up to 8 parameters can be displayed on it, while it has two operating modes - night and day, and does not glare in the sun. I don’t know how KTM did it, but during all the time it was used, the sun shone on it once under Mineralnye Vody, hanging directly above its head. At that moment, I could not read the small information in the block on the left, but the speedometer and revolutions were still clearly visible.
It is worth noting the so-called Travel Pack - this is an additional option, and as far as I know, KTM has taken the path of equipping all its motorcycles at maximum speed from the factory, but limiting these functions in the firmware (correct me if this is not the case). So, by purchasing the Traveler package, you get a two-way quickshifter that works perfectly up, but I don’t use it much down, the Hill Hold Control function, which makes me neither cold nor hot, and MSR- Motor Slip Regulation (Adjustment). engine slip), which is another of the safety systems and prevents the rear wheel from locking during intensive downshifts, so I’m not at all against its presence here.
The motorcycle also has cruise control, which has proven to be a very convenient feature on long highway trips, and to which not a single question arose at all (especially after reading the instructions for its use). And probably the last pleasant plus I would like to note is the waterproof case with USB charging for a mobile phone, which in this generation is located on the right side of the spider between the dashboard and the plastic. Well, now to the few ergonomic disadvantages that I have identified for myself. As I noted above, the problem of the weight and height of the motorcycle has not gone away, which is really a problem for people with a height of less than 180.
Further, surprisingly, this list will be complemented by an adjustable windshield, or more precisely an adjustment dial, which simply cannot be turned on the go (in the 21 generation it was replaced with a three-blade one and it seems like this problem has gone away), well, at least it’s not very safe, so I I stopped doing this after the first two or three attempts.
Also, the waterproof case has moved here, namely its location and the location of the USB connector itself - it’s not very convenient to insert the charging cable and sometimes you have to spend a little time throwing the phone itself and closing the pocket (again, KTM moved this case to the front of the tank in generation 21 year and made it like a glove compartment).
I also couldn’t get used to using the emergency stop button; the manufacturer made it in a place where it seems to me that it is physically impossible to reach with a finger without releasing the throttle. Therefore, you can press it either when you are driving on cruise control, or with your left hand, or release the gas.
Phone case locations
Lid opening angle. On the left side of the wall there is a USB connector, into which it is quite problematic to quickly connect a cord. If it were TypeC there would probably be fewer problems
Trying to reach the emergency stop button
Trying to reach the button with another finger
The windshield adjustment dial is exactly the same on the right side
You can see how the hand is a little twisted, and given the design of the knob itself, it is very difficult to turn it while moving. I wouldn't recommend
The KTM My Ride application can be purchased in the App Store for 790 rubles and it will allow you to display navigation on the motorcycle display. At the moment, I have only two complaints - the lack of Russian language, so the address must be entered in Latin, but KTM seems to have no problems finding destinations. Moreover, it is surprising that Garmin could not find some points. But periodically the application cannot build a route, even if you are standing at a gas station next to the huge M4 highway, and this is very frustrating. Perhaps KTM will fix these bugs, I really hope that they are updating their application. By the way, the navigation itself is displayed in this generation with arrows and hints about the distance to the nearest turn, and a map. At the same time, it is possible through the settings to display two points of interest on the navigation screen. In my example, this is the distance to the destination and one of the kilometer counters for the journey
Navigation display
Bonus track =)
Ground clearance is the other side of the inconvenience with height; the motorcycle looks like a lifted SUV compared to everything nearby. The seat is moderately hard, out of habit, the first couple of days on the highway I wanted to stand up literally every 100 kilometers, but as you know, you get used to everything, and on the third or fourth day the fifth point was no longer begging for mercy. It’s worth mentioning here that, unlike the flagships of other manufacturers, and even the average 890 version, this saddle has no adjustments, which is a shame. At the moment I’m wondering if it’s possible to lower it, and if the BMW F800GS had factory versions of such seats - lowered and higher, then unfortunately KTM couldn’t find something similar right off the bat. It is possible to install PowerParts with heating, but I don’t think it’s necessary yet, because... in cold weather, it is the heat from the collector that warms up the lower part of the rider’s body. Vibrations - after the F800GS, where after 115 km/h the motorcycle began to have a really unpleasant vibration, KTM has established itself as an aristocrat. To me, combined with the Wings exhaust and the operation of the V-twin, its vibrations feel like the pleasant rumbling of a wild animal. After 7,000 kilometers of driving, I did not experience any effect, such as tingling in the tips of my fingers. I think owners of single-barreled guns or heavily vibration-loaded models are familiar with these sensations. Fuel Range - works with a few peculiarities and depends directly on the number of shelves in the fuel indicator column. Unlike the Tiger800 I know, where the power reserve indicator changes in live mode and can predict the remaining reserve with an accuracy of a kilometer, our counter changes readings in multiples of tens. That is, you can drive for a long time with an indicator of 360 kilometers, and literally a second later, when you lower your eyes, you see new ones, for example, 320. I won’t say that this is some kind of big minus; in one hundred percent of cases, the readings on the screen coincided with the remaining fuel in the tank when refueling. The operating modes of the engine and electronic assistants - they really work, and for the first two weeks I rode in Rain mode, because it somehow restrained the 160 forces that KTM put into this engine. Again, we get used to everything, and for the city and the highway, the Street became optimal for me - it gives fiery dynamics and excellent performance of all safety systems. Off-road, not always, but I tried to switch to Offroad, which leaves only 100 horses out of the entire herd. At the same time, when changing the engine operating mode, the ABS and MTS systems do not change their mode; if necessary, this must be done through the menu, which infuriates many who are accustomed to separate mechanical buttons, or tied to engine operating modes. This is not a problem for me, moreover, on gravel and rocky mountain passes I did not change the ABS and MTC modes, and the electronics did not interfere at all. Magic! =)
General impressions after a season on off-road and asphalt
This motorcycle will definitely not leave anyone indifferent - KTM managed to combine the fiery character of a sportbike and the off-road confidence of the best Tourendur. And the flagship’s rich equipment allows you to enjoy all modern trends and remain in the thrall of marketers for many years to come. To briefly summarize, you want to ride and ride this motorcycle, from daily use with quick starts from traffic lights, confident driving along the highway, to off-road adventures limited only by your own skill. Of course, returning to the jokes about KTM, there is still a lot of maintenance ahead of this motorcycle and all the possible inconveniences associated with it, but for some reason it seems to me that everything will be fine. Thank you to everyone who finished reading, make your dreams come true, banish doubts, paint the world red Ready To Race =)))
A couple of photos from the trip, a story about which I really hope to write in the near future
Let's face it
This is how we quietly approached the minuses. The catch is that with a comprehensive rework, a total upgrade, everyone was expecting something much more powerful. Yes, it has become easy. Yes, it has become more interesting in terms of the engine. Yes, it has a lot of good gadgets. On the official website it now costs almost 1.8 million rubles. Is it possible to find something “tastier” for that kind of money?
The KTM 1290 Super Duke R is already being compared to its rivals, such as the Ducati Streetfighter V4 and MV Agusta Brutale 1000RR.
Of course, the “beast 3.0” will compete for its place in the Sun, but time will tell how successful it will be.
