DIY straight-through muffler

You can buy a direct-flow muffler in any specialized stores. They are usually of interest to young motorcyclists who dream of high speeds. But real bikers are not sold on stickers from famous brands. They do everything they need with their own hands.

If you want to enter the world for real men, you need to make a direct-flow muffler with your own hands. When riding at normal speed, its noise will not be different from other motorcycles. But as the speed increases, the characteristic rumble of the engine appears. What do I need to do?

  • Take a piece of pipe that has a diameter of 60 mm and cut it in half. First, one part is processed and a flange is welded in the middle. The outer part does not change. This is the inlet pipe. In half of the pipe, which is located in the muffler, you need to drill a large number of holes using an electric drill. You need to use a 5-6 mm drill. Recess the flange with a ten-millimeter tip into a pipe with a diameter of 100 mm and weld it.
  • We are preparing the second pipe. Weld a flange to the second section of pipe. It should be 80 mm from the edge. This part of the pipe will be inserted into the muffler.
  • Carefully lay mineral wool insulation into a pipe with a diameter of 100 mm. This is to combat noise reduction. To do this, roll the cotton wool along the diameter of the pipe and push it to the opposite side.
  • Roll up the mesh and lower it inside the insulation that was inserted into the pipe. The mesh should fit onto the pipe with holes.
  • Now you need to insert the flange with the pipe, which you prepared in advance, into the pipe with the short end. It needs to be recessed to a depth of 10 mm and welded.
  • You can cut off the fastening elements from the old muffler and transfer them to the direct-flow muffler by welding them.

My situation was a little different: I bought a motor already with a Kerker forward flow, and, in general, the sound suited me up to a certain point... One day, at the end of August 14, on another mountain pass near Anapa at night, screws were unscrewed, which We fastened the rear cover of the muffler, as a result, the first stage (the cover itself) launches at speed, ground-to-air, and then the second stage - the entire filling of the can. At speed, the change in the roar of the engine was not immediately noticed, only a little later, without immediately understanding what was happening. It’s no use looking for pieces of iron on mountain passes in the dark at night, so the next day I walked all the way through the pass back and forth (along different roadsides), but found nothing. I was left with a completely empty, open at the back, bare jar. In general, at that moment I gave up: there was no money for a new plug, and the roar of the Zaporozhets roofing felts, or the T-50 was annoying me - so I drove with it all autumn, and the beginning of this spring. This form had its advantages: in a traffic jam, the aisle itself moved 5 cars ahead in advance, the dogs did not try to attack me, but ran away with their eyes bulging.

However, the roar did not suit me and I was thinking what to do: I was looking for a muffler, looking for a db-killer... And recently I got the idea to find a mechanic and order to make a cover for the muffler with an inner tube. The idea was attractive because it was budget-friendly, especially in comparison with banks costing 20K and more.

So I figured out its design in my head: the lid is attached to standard holes in the jar, a tube is welded into it in the center with a plug on the inside and a number of holes in the sides. This should have been enough to muffle the sound (I didn’t want it to be very quiet). I started searching through services who could fulfill my idea. I shared the idea with a friend and, unexpectedly, he said that he could do it himself at work! My friend's name is Sashka (Bogatyy) - a man with golden hands and a clear technical mind. He considered my option and proposed his own, more advanced one - with variable resistance for the exhaust gases and, accordingly, with variable sound. In the end, this is what we got.

The idea was as follows: in the back there is a plug with three holes, secured with three screws in the can, in front of it there is an “impeller” that blocks the holes by a variable amount.

On the reverse side, in the depths of the muffler, there is a second impeller, but as a spacer into the walls of the can. After two disks with holes - the position of the disks relative to each other changes the size of the holes, changing the resistance to exhaust gases and, accordingly, the sound.

UPD a month later.:) The post lay in drafts for a long time and I couldn’t get around to finishing it. During this time, the system has undergone tests and changes. The result in terms of sound exceeded all my expectations and I was completely delighted with the sound! At idle you can hardly hear it, when you roll up to a traffic light in neutral, you get the feeling that the engine has stalled! :)) Up to 5000 rpm the sound is quiet and bassy, ​​soft and pleasant. As soon as you spin above 5K rpm. - this is where the voice of a real forward flow opens: it becomes loud, but soft, and does not hurt the ears. It’s convenient to use the throttle between the rows: while you’re rolling, you don’t scare or stress anyone, if you rev ​​the throttle, they immediately move apart. But in practice, the system revealed its weaknesses, or rather only one - it could not withstand the vibrations and gradually began to loosen, vibrate, rattle and break. As a result, having drawn conclusions, Sashka and I came up with a way to correct the shortcomings: the long axis was replaced with a short bolt, on which there is only one disk at a distance of 5 cm from the cover. Without holes at all, but with a slightly smaller diameter, so that there is a gap of 1 mm between its edge and the wall of the jar. This turned out to be quite enough to effectively muffle the sound and make it pleasantly bassy, ​​and not loudly screeching, as is usually the case with private soldiers. At the same time, we got rid of the long lever, excess weight of the structure and took the load off the mounting screws. There is an idea to make a glass from the mesh between the disc and the lid in order to soften the sound a little more and muffle it more. I think we’ll stir it up soon and try it out. Although the result makes me very happy - my ears are calm, my neighbors are calm, and in my company I don’t always have to be the last one during rides. Types of mufflers and their differences

There are 4 types of mufflers based on the method of absorbing acoustic waves:

  • reflective;
  • restrictive;
  • absorption;
  • resonator.

The reflective circuit is reverse-flow, the rest are direct-flow.

Reflective

If one muffler is installed in a car, then a reflective version is used. It uses the principle of “breaking” the flow of exhaust gases by creating several partitions, expansion chambers and turns. Exhaust volume is reduced to standard levels. For this reason, the vast majority of factory vehicles are equipped with the reflective type.

The disadvantage of this type of muffler is the reduction in engine power due to the resistance of the exhaust system to the flow of exhaust gases.

Resonator

A resonator muffler is installed as the first stage in the exhaust system of powerful engines. It consists of a perforated pipe placed in a housing. The body is divided into two or three sections. The energy of the exhaust gases is weakened due to a stepwise reduction in pressure.

The part reduces the force of sound vibrations and maintains engine power with a free flow of exhaust gases.

Restrictive

In restrictive mufflers, the gas flow passes through a diaphragm or cone narrowing, which leads to a decrease in engine power. The acoustic protection of such devices is low, since the diaphragm does not interfere with the rectilinear movement of the sound wave.

Absorption

The damping function for sound vibrations in the absorption muffler is performed by a finely porous non-flammable material located in the space between the perforated pipe and the housing. The design is similar to the resonator type. This type has little effect on power reduction.

Homemade muffler with a pleasant sound

I don’t know how it is now, but many people used to know that an old car fire extinguisher is an excellent preparation for direct flow.

The story is simple: what I didn’t do with the original muffler can on the pita was of little use. I changed the muffler stuffing, made a flute like a Yamaha one, but still the sound was disgusting, rattling and loud, in general - a barrel organ.

It is possible to install a full-fledged direct flow from the pit, but you need to shorten it, digest the fasteners, but you understand: there was no particular desire to buy a barrel for 5 rubles and still digest it all, but the desire to get rid of the original muffler still did not leave.

We take the most attractive tool in the garage, affectionately called “Binder,” and saw the bottoms of the fire extinguishers evenly.

Shape and length

As mentioned above, the volume of the exhaust pipe must be greater than the volume of the cylinder. Therefore, a short pipe will have less effect than a long one. In addition, hot gas from a short system will be dangerous for the pilot.

The shape of the structure should be round. At sharp corners, air movement will begin to slow down, causing the bends to become hot, resulting in a crack appearing over time.

The exhaust configuration also refers to the shape - these are pipes coming out of the cylinders. There may be different numbers of them:

It depends on the motor itself. On two-stroke machines they usually have a separate pipe per cylinder. The volume of the exhaust then exceeds the volume of the engine so much that the air waves can expand enough at the exhaust to cool completely.
