Stylish and fast maxi scooter Suzuki Skyway 400

The Japanese maxi scooter Suzuki Skywave 400 (photos of it are posted on the page) is a modern means of transportation in a metropolis. The car is inferior in maneuverability to nimble bikes with 125 cc engines, but the level of comfort of a scooter is much higher. Suzuki Skywave 400 is a complete analogue of the Honda Silver Wing 400, if we consider these two scooters from the point of view of technical parameters. The difference is observed in the engine: the Silver has two cylinders, while the Suzuki is equipped with a single-cylinder engine.

Design features

Let's start with the impressive dimensions of the maxi scooter: length - 2270 mm; width-760mm; height-1385. It is also worth mentioning the saddle height of 710 mm, which affects the appropriate riding position. The main power unit on the maxi scooter is a four-stroke petrol engine with a displacement of 385 cc. see Number of cylinders - 1, valves - 4. The engine is powered by electronic fuel injection. If we express power in horsepower, then it is 34 units. Electronic starting and ignition system. A reliable liquid cooling system protects the motor from overheating.

The curb weight of the Japanese scooter is 222 kg. The vehicle is equipped with a steel tubular frame as a “skeleton”, which takes the load from the weight of the engine, all components of the scooter, as well as the driver and passenger. The fuel tank capacity is 14 liters, which is quite enough for long trips. All power from the engine is transmitted to the rear wheel via a belt. The gearbox is automatic and the clutch system is centrifugal. The wheels are shod with tires with a special tread for driving in urban spaces, alloy wheels.

Motorcycle Suzuki AN 400 Burgman 2005 review

The description of the Suzuki AN 400 Burgman 2005 motorcycle is in the queue for publication of the article. Announcement: Today, for almost every new motorcycle that comes into being, marketers strive to carve out their own niche. This one is a road sport, this one is a recreational enduro. But what class should we include a motorcycle that has a little bit of everything? A good bike should have a reliable engine, comfortable ergonomics and simple controls...

Suzuki AN 400 Burgman is a very rare motorcycle in Russia equipped with an average power 32 hp engine. Despite the fact that good models of motorcycles have a very respectable price, and the season for their use is relatively short, the motorcycle market is developing rapidly. And if you believe the words of dealers, then some models of recently released motorcycles are selling like hot cakes at the beginning of the season, and the models brought to Russia are clearly not enough to fully satisfy consumer demand.

A motorcycle has long ceased to be an alternative to a car, and the times when this equipment was bought only because there was not enough money for a full-fledged car are forgotten. Nowadays, two-wheelers can be called technological marvels in many cases, and their cost can be compared with that of prestigious cars.

Many people have started buying motorcycles for hobby purposes as riding or even collecting them has become a good pastime for many people. Many motorcycles, for example the Suzuki AN 400 Burgman, whose technical characteristics make it possible to call the model a prestigious brand, are in demand among both beginners and experienced motorcyclists.

Motorcycles with an engine capacity of 385 cc. see, appeared as a result of long work of inventors who sought to create a model that was not inferior in characteristics to other versions of the motorcycle. In some cases, these models are not only not inferior, but also ahead of other motorcycles, as they have minimal fuel consumption and other excellent parameters.

Motorcycles from 250 to 400 kb. see which includes the Suzuki AN 400 Burgman - this is the most common class of motorcycles. In this range you already have a choice among almost all classes of motorcycles. Many people call this category the most suitable for a first motorcycle. You can purchase a moderately heavy, powerful and flexible motorcycle for relatively little money. Many people advise taking a road bike with a 400 cc engine as your first choice. We cannot completely agree with this, because such motorcycles often weigh about 200 kg and have a sufficient power reserve. If your skills in riding a two-wheeled vehicle are limited to a training motorcycle at a motorcycle school, then you should not immediately take such a device. Many beginners get into ridiculous accidents simply because they do not know all the features of operating such equipment. After all, the heavier and more powerful the motorcycle, the better you should know how to handle it in different situations. Even a monkey can just drive in a straight line (no joke).

Design and appearance

The dynamic and at the same time laconic design of the scooter immediately captivates. The plastic fairings are designed in such a way that a maxi scooter can easily be confused with a progressive sports bike. The plastic itself is environmentally friendly and quite durable. In minor accidents, only shallow scratches are observed. The spacious seat with soft padding allows you to comfortably travel long distances together. The presence of a backrest also adds comfort; it can be adjusted and adjusted exclusively to yourself. The trunk has a capacity of 55 liters and can accommodate two helmets, the necessary tools, and a first aid kit.

Specifications

Due to fuel injection, engine performance has improved significantly. Dynamic indicators have increased sharply. The engine starts without any failures at sub-zero temperatures, which in turn has a positive effect on the quality of fuel combustion. As a result, the main power unit performs significantly better. Engineers from a well-known brand have really racked their brains to make the operation of the maxi scooter more environmentally friendly. The amount of exhaust gases has been significantly reduced due to the catalyst and the reverse supply of oxygen.

Due attention must be paid to the handling of the scooter, especially when it comes to the chassis. The suspension is represented by a front telescopic fork and a rear pendulum fork with a shock absorber, the rigidity of which can be adjusted (7 levels of adjustment). The suspension of a scooter can be partially compared to the suspension of sports motorcycles. Thanks to the automatic transmission, even a teenager can control the bulky scooter. The main transmission is a belt. Disc brakes help stop the vehicle at speed. There are two discs with a diameter of 260 mm at the front, and one at the rear with a diameter of 210 mm.

Chassis

Both suspensions of the scooter, its elongated base, the angle of departure of the front wheel - everything is designed for stable riding on a flat, hard-surfaced road. 13-inch wheels provide a soft ride, and the smooth thrust of the engine allows movement without jerking at speeds in the range from 28 to 100 kilometers per hour. The front suspension is single-pole, with effective linkage damping and vibration damper. The mechanism is equipped with a reinforcing spring. The rear suspension is an articulated short-link with an adjustable mono-shock absorber. Due to the low center of gravity, the scooter is stable on course and corners stably. However, on small radius turns, the car needs to reduce speed, since the lower part of the body can touch the asphalt if it is tilted too much. Insufficient ground clearance has an effect.

Dashboard

Modern digital sensors are located on a convenient and practical digital panel. It harmoniously accommodates the fuel level and oil heating sensor in the engine. In addition, the panel houses a speedometer and tachometer. The ignition switch is located in the center. The panel is designed in such a way that the driver can monitor the speed limit and engine speed as comfortably as possible. There are special small buzzers installed on the sides, which notify about engine failures or problems with the chassis of the maxi scooter.

Disadvantages of the model

  • Limited maneuverability, which greatly affects the conditions of a metropolis.
  • Windshield placement requires additional adjustment.
  • Justified, but still a very high price for a maxi scooter.

In conclusion, it is necessary to say the following: a significant part of the reviews about the Suzuki Skyway 400 are positive. This is an excellent technique suitable for both city driving and travel. A spacious seat, a functional backrest, a spacious trunk and a cruising speed of 120 km/h confidently distinguish the Suzuki 400 maxi scooter from other representatives of this class of equipment. We must not forget about the high quality of assembly, which is observed in the traditional Japanese style. When buying a skyway, you need to be interested in the presence of ABS, because there are models where this function is not provided. Simple controls, progressive technical characteristics of the skywave 400, and a nice appearance encourage the purchase of an interesting piece of equipment - the Suzuki Skywave 400.

The Java turned out to be a very beautiful, but somewhat inconvenient motorcycle for city use. Moreover, control is not a burden for a young guy, but at my much older middle age it already creates some problems. Therefore, it was decided to purchase something more modern, easy to control and relatively inexpensive; the choice fell on the Sudzuki Skywave 400 (K3) maxi-scooter.

Why Suzuki? Before choosing a model, I dug through quite a lot of information on the Internet about these same maxi-scooters. I liked the Honda Forza-200, YAMAHA G-MAJESTY400, Honda SilverWing 400, and others. It came down to price; I couldn’t put the family’s budget in a stalemate. I wanted the purchase to have a good price-quality ratio. This is partly what determined the purchase at the very end of the season. One of the maxiscooters was in Orenburg for sale. It was a K1 model, produced in 2001, with a mileage of 25 thousand km! MECHANICAL speedometer. This:

The seller asked an inadequate 130 kilo rubles for the K1 model (with carburetor) 2001. But I could at least sit on the maxiscooter and evaluate the convenience, fit and weight of the device. In general, this deal did not take place.

I looked for offers in nearby cities, but didn’t find anything worthwhile. Then my gaze turned to online stores in Moscow and St. Petersburg. In one of them I found a bunch of maxiscooters offered for sale, including shipping by a transport company. I found the model I was interested in, guided by these comparisons of models.

Comparison of modifications of Suzuki Burgman 400/250

Below is a comparison of modifications of currently existing Suzuki Burgman 400/250 models when choosing a used one from a practical point of view, taking into account the costs of purchase and operation.

Suzuki Burgman 400 is a bored-out version of the Suzuki Burgman 250. In this regard, the differences between the models are not significant. Here are the main ones: Increased cylinder volume by boring (without changing the crankcase). Reinforced variator and drive shafts on AN400. From 1998 to 2006, the AN400 was equipped with a convenient pneumatic system for adjusting the stiffness of the rear shock absorber. Increased exhaust system diameter on AN400. The AN400 has a decompressor installed, because... the AN250 starter is unable to crank the crankshaft without it.

Here, in fact, are all the main differences. Externally, the models are practically indistinguishable except for the shape of the muffler.

At the moment there are 4 main body options:

41 bodies (since 1998)

pros: — price — the largest number of spare parts on disassembly — combined brake — convenient adjustment of the monoshock absorber

cons: - carburetor - uncomfortable passenger handles - no tachometer - one headlight - small luggage compartment

— small glove compartments (only 1 upper one) — it’s not easy to find a device in really good technical condition — the rear wheel is splined

42 body (since 2000)

pros: - price (almost the same as 41) - large number of spare parts on disassembly - combined brake - convenient adjustment of the monoshock absorber - large luggage compartment - convenient passenger handles

cons: - carburetor - no tachometer - one headlight - small glove compartments (only 1 upper one) - it’s difficult to find a device in really good condition - splined rear wheel

43 body (since 2002)

pluses: - large front glove box + 2 upper - 2 headlights - there is a tachometer - injector - combined brake - convenient adjustment of the monoshock absorber - large luggage compartment - comfortable passenger handles - rear wheel on the hub

minuses:

— practically absent!

44 body (since 2006), 45 body

pros: - good tech. condition (mostly) - large front glove compartment (but less than on the 43 body) + 2 top - 2 headlights - there is a tachometer - injector - large luggage compartment (the largest among all 400) - comfortable passenger handles (but less comfortable, as on the 43 , 42 body) - pushers installed - valve adjustment after 24,000. - 2 camshafts

cons: - price - the combination brake has been removed in favor of a second front brake disc (this has been compensated for by ABS since 2009) - inconvenient adjustment of the rear monoshock absorber (done through a hatch in the bottom) - rear wheel on splines

The AN250 model, due to its greater prevalence in its homeland than the AN400 (due to administrative nuances), had a greater number of modifications and was even equipped with a 7-speed electronic CVT.

Then there was a long (about a month) correspondence with the seller. Typically, all equipment from Japan goes through auctions, from the auction sheets of which you can approximately estimate the condition of the purchased equipment. A rating below 4 is not worth buying. In my case, the seller sent me the frame number, but it was not listed at any auction in Japan. When I asked why, the seller explained that the scooter was purchased before the auction, which made me sad, which I informed the seller about. He undertook to take detailed photos of the scooter and a video of its operation with a test ride, which he did.

Here you can see photos of the scooter I purchased

I'll try to post a video of this scooter in action:

In the end, I decided to purchase this scooter, which I informed the seller about. So, a Suzuki Skywave-400 (K3) manufactured in 2004 with a mileage of 21,517 km, costing 112 kilo rubles + delivery from Moscow to Orenburg by a transport company of 8,040 rubles. I was issued an invoice for payment, which I paid and began to wait for news of shipment. The seller completed the shipment in three days, I received a scan of the delivery note, which indicated the estimated delivery time.

The transport workers also did an excellent job, delivering the cargo two days earlier. I envisioned 2 options for evacuating the scooter from the company terminal to the garage (about 5 km). 1. We take the Gazelle from the transport workers, load it directly in the crate and dismantle the crate at the garage. 2. We disassemble the crate in the terminal and move it under our own power.

The first option did not meet with enthusiasm among transport managers, either there are no cars or something else, in general, we will deliver it to the queue in a couple of days, which did not suit me. During this time, I planned to register it. Therefore, I found the warehouse manager and asked him to help dismantle the lathing, he allocated employees. After disassembling the boards, we saw a powerful cocoon made of bubble wrap, carefully cut it and took out the scooter. A thorough inspection showed that they sent what was shown in the photo. The documents were in the glove compartment (PTS, sales contract, transfer certificate and customs declaration in which this scooter was present). The keys (two) were in the ignition, the battery was disconnected, the windshield and mirrors were removed. We rolled the scooter aside, connected the battery and tried to start it. The device rattled cheerfully. There was about a liter of gasoline (I asked the seller to splash one and a half liters before sending, anticipating the option of hauling)

We installed mirrors and a wind deflector and I drove around the area, everything worked, blinked, braked, crossed myself and drove out into the street. This was my first trip on a scooter (I rode a motorcycle for quite a long time since 72) Impressions: - excellent dynamics. - comfortable fit. - low center of gravity, hence good stability. — good adjustment of the rigidity of the rear mortise. - on the left lever there is a combined brake (front and rear) on the right - only front. — a huge trunk under the saddle, a decent one in the front (almost like a car). — informative instrument panel. — easy control (still a variator).

Disadvantages: — small 13′ wheels, you can’t go fishing on it. – heavy (180 kg dry weight)

Well, well, there’s a motorbike, but you can’t travel on it, there’s no registration. And I decided to start the process. What is available from the documents: 1. PTS with completed buyer details. 2. Sales and purchase agreement (the seller filled out his part and signed it) 3. Just in case, he sent a customs declaration where my scooter was listed (it was not needed).

4. It is necessary to obtain a diagnostic card for maintenance. 5. It is necessary to obtain MTPL insurance. 6. If you have all these documents, you can go to the traffic police.

First I went to the MOT, where they examined the scooter, turned the corners and wrote out a diagnostic card. Since you have a diagnostic map, you can go for insurance. But it was not there. Rosgosstrakh, a brute, offers a bunch of imposed services in the form of life insurance and tick bite insurance. When asked why I needed this, I had a mild form of incephalitis and now I have lifelong immunity, they shrugged their shoulders. It was with difficulty that I found a company where they provided me with clever insurance broken down by month (September-October this year and from April to November next year for 1,700 rubles. Considering that OSAGO insurance will become more expensive from January 1, I am very pleased. After that, I rushed to Traffic police, fortunately it was nearby. And what do you think? I was busy with all these travels at 10 am, by 2 pm I registered the scooter and received registration numbers!!! On this high note, the story with the purchase of this scooter ends.
