Looking for my first motorcycle for little money. Part 2. Japanese and European used cars

Last time we talked about Chinese motorcycles. In our market, cheap options for new equipment Baltmotors, Racer, M1NSK are a dime a dozen. What if you want to immediately use more serious equipment? Or do you have doubts about the quality of products from the Middle Kingdom? Today we will find out what you can buy for a beginner for little money for the first season among second-hand ones.

Recently, as you know, cars have become much cheaper. But has this trend affected two-wheeled vehicles? Yes, I touched it. Sellers note a drop in motorcycle prices. Today, if you have $2000, you can count on a good used car. So what should you choose?

Yamaha YBR 125

If a beginner is completely “green”, has never ridden a car or a motorcycle and weighs less than 100 kg, then how can one not remember the legendary “ebrik” Yamaha YBR-125? For up to $2000 you can buy a new or almost new YBR-125. This is a very reliable and safe motorcycle. There is no better option for learning to drive! And for its 125 “cubes” it is quite dynamic.

But there are several problems. Firstly, it is not suitable for a larger motorcyclist. Secondly, already in the first season you will quickly get bored. Thirdly, it’s not entirely safe to drive on the highway in such a vehicle...

What else to see from small-capacity technology? And, strictly speaking, there is nothing more. Used Japanese or European motorcycles from 250 to 400 cc. see exotic in our region. In the price category of $1000-2300, our site displays only 22 advertisements with motorcycles of similar capacity, and half of the options are IZH and Java from Soviet times... Europe is full of interesting 250-400 cc motorcycles, but they don’t come to us because of demand not on them. Accordingly, spare parts and consumables are more difficult to find. We give everyone a “liter”, no less... But in vain. Such motorcycles are very economical and safe.

Therefore, we immediately move on to the “five hundred” and “six hundred”. To see the equipment live, we went to the seller of used motorcycles, individual entrepreneur Igor Kazakevich (motoport.by) . Our consultant has about 100 motorcycles from Europe in his warehouse. Moreover, the vast majority of copies cost just up to $2000.

“Under current conditions, I don’t see the point in importing expensive motorcycles,” says Igor. — I select “live” specimens in terms of chassis and engine. Yes, sometimes there may be a scratch on the plastic, a crack, or “tired” rubber. But you need to understand that it’s difficult to buy the perfect motorcycle under $2,000. You often have to put up with minor shortcomings... On the other hand, maintaining a motorcycle is several times cheaper than a car. A set of tires on a Suzuki GS500, for example, will cost $150. Complete repainting, if necessary, costs 300. The first maintenance after purchase in the form of changing oil, filters, spark plugs, adjusting and cleaning carburetors will take about $150. A motorcycle is economical.

Unlike Chinese technology, Japanese and European used vehicles, unless you buy a frankly “tired” version, are very reliable. For example, Igor saw in Europe a courier Suzuki from England with mileage... 600,000 miles! It’s not a fact that it had a “original” engine, but in any case, such a mileage for a motorcycle is very, very high.

Suzuki GS500

We are rolling out the first option for the newcomer Suzuki GS500. It was produced practically unchanged in 1989-2012. An enviable long-liver! A very reliable, lightweight (170 kg) and economical motorcycle with good brakes and easy handling. The two-cylinder 500 cc engine with a carburetor and air cooling produces good dynamics and has smooth traction from low and medium speeds. How much? This particular example from 2007 costs $1,800.

Why is such a fresh motorcycle so cheap? The rear tire obviously needs to be changed after purchase. There are small scratches from being dropped and a hole in the seat. The official declared fuel consumption for the Suzuki GS500 is 4.87 liters per 100 km. The exact value depends on your riding style and the condition of the motorcycle. By unscrewing the handle all the way, you can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 7 seconds.

Kawasaki ER5

The ER5 is damn beautiful. It also has a two-cylinder 500 cc engine, but it is already liquid cooled. The main advantages of the Kawasaki ER5 are low cost, engine efficiency and unpretentiousness. It is these qualities that made the ER5 quite a popular model in Europe.

The device accelerates to 100 km/h in 6 seconds. Average fuel consumption on the Kawasaki ER5 is 4-5.5 liters per 100 km. The exact value depends on your riding style. Weighs 179 kg. Motorcycle 2006 can be bought for $1600 - not bad.

Honda CB500

Igor didn’t have a CB500, but they are in the advertisements.

The model was intended for the European market, had a fairly low cost and was extremely reliable. Unlike classic motorcycles, the Honda CB500 had an inline 2-cylinder liquid-cooled engine. The engine has smooth thrust throughout the entire operating range, without sudden pick-ups and dips, which can be observed on classic Japanese 400 cc in-line “fours”. Acceleration to 100 km/h in just 4.3 seconds. “Dry” weight - 173 kg. Average fuel consumption, according to owners, is 5-6 liters per 100 km. The motorcycle in the sale ad was manufactured in 1996 and is valued at $1,500.

Yamaha YX600 Radian

Radian is a little off topic in the sense that the motorcycle is rare in our used market, and moreover, it was manufactured only in 1986-1990. But a very stylish device! Classic - what can I say?

600 cc, 4 cylinders, air cooling. Weight with all liquids - 197 kg. In technical terms and in terms of performance, the motorcycle was quite decent. Fuel consumption is about 5 liters. You can reach 100 km/h in just over 4 seconds. This particular motorcycle, launched in 1993, costs $1,300. By the way, when buying a used motorcycle, don’t forget to bargain...

Suzuki GSF600 Bandit

You'll be stunned by just the name of the motorcycle - Suzuki Bandit.

The model was produced from 1995 to 2004. The engine from the Suzuki GSX-F600 Katana was taken as a basis, retuned for torque at low and medium speeds. The four-cylinder engine is air-oil cooled and produces 77 hp. (80 hp - after 2000) power. Motorcycle 1996 valued at $1800.

Acceleration to 100 km/h takes just 4.1 seconds, and the “dry” weight is 204 kg. You can accelerate to 195 km/h. But no need... Personally, the red Bandit without the fairing just makes my mouth water.

Yamaha XJ600S Diversion

An alternative to “Bandit” is “Sabotage”. The XJ600S was positioned as a simple budget motorcycle, perfect for beginners. The 4-cylinder air-cooled engine produces 61 hp. power.

Average fuel consumption is about 5.5 liters per 100 km. You can accelerate to 100 km/h in 4.7 seconds. “Dry” weight - 182 kg. This particular example from 1996 sells for $1,400.

Kawasaki GPZ500

From the same cohort - GPZ 500. 4.5 seconds to “hundreds”, 193 km/h “maximum speed”. The two-cylinder 500 cc engine spins very well and produces 60 hp. The weight is small - only 176 kg without technical fluids. A 2002 model was found in the advertisements. for $2100.

BMW F650CS

The BMW F650CS is a road version of the F650GS, the distinctive features of which are alloy wheels, a belt drive of the final drive and a cantilever swingarm. This is a lightweight motorcycle aimed at beginner bikers.

Where a regular motorcycle has a gas tank, the CS has a spacious luggage compartment in which you can carry luggage, a helmet or place an audio system. The 20-liter tank itself is plastic and located under the saddle.

The power of the single-cylinder 650 cc liquid-cooled engine is 50 hp. The passport consumption is 3.7 liters per 100 km. The 2002 version can be purchased for exactly $2000.

Aprilia Pegaso and other enduro

Endurikes like this Aprilia Pegaso are great for beginners. And you can drive off the asphalt, and in the city you feel at ease. The main thing is to choose an option according to your height.

The 650 cc single-cylinder Pegaso engine (the same Rotax as the “caterpillar”), liquid cooled, develops 50 hp. Good traction throughout the entire rev range, reliability, unpretentiousness, service life - it’s all there. Maximum speed is 172 km/h. Fuel consumption varies from 4.5 to 6 liters per 100 km depending on driving style. Weight including liquids 201 kg. The cost of servicing is comparable to the Japanese ones; there are no problems with spare parts.

Price? Motorcycle 1996 costs $2350. Enduro is awesome. But it’s not so easy to fit into our budget.

What else to see? Honda XL600V Transalp, Kawasaki KLE500, Suzuki XF650 Freewind, Yamaha XTZ 660 Tenere, etc. You can ask the price for small-capacity motorcycles like the 125 cc Honda CLR or Yamaha DT, but the choice here is limited...

Yamaha Virago 535

Choppers like this Virago 535 are also suitable for a beginner. Two-cylinder V-twin engine with a capacity of 535 cc. cm is famous for its reliability and unpretentiousness. 46 “horses”, 160 km/h maximum speed, 7.1 seconds to “hundred”, 182 kg of “dry” weight and 6 liters of gasoline per 100 km are the main technical data of the motorcycle.

Verdict ABW.BY

The obvious advantages of used motorcycles from Japanese and European manufacturers compared to new “Chinese” ones are durability and reliability. Again, for the same money we get more power and pleasure. The main thing is not to buy a “tired” motorcycle with engine problems or a crooked frame. And although even problems with the frame are solved on the slipway, do you need it?

For the first season, it is strictly not recommended to take too powerful motorcycles. And if you don’t have experience riding not only a motorcycle, but also a car, then I personally would recommend “Minskach” or “Ebrik” - out of harm’s way. And in any case, drive very, very carefully. Because a motorcyclist who has never fallen simply does not exist in nature.

I would like to wish bikers to be attentive and careful this season, and motorists to look in their mirrors more often. Treat each other with understanding.

We are waiting for sun and warmth.

The best motorcycle manufacturers - which company to choose

If you are too lazy or don’t have time to delve into the details, then turn to the world’s best motorcycle manufacturers, which are:

  • Honda;
  • Kawasaki;
  • Yamaha;
  • Viper;
  • Suzuki.

But these companies have so many models that it is better to consider them more specifically in the ranking of the best motorcycles. Here we will continue to delve into the details and characteristics in order to choose a motorcycle solely based on its parameters.

Recommendations: 15 best motorcycle helmets

15 best scooters

19 best motorcycles

Classic and sportbikes

The best 600cc motorcycles usually fall into this category. This is the magnificent Suzuki GSX-R600, and the evil Yamaha P6, and the incredibly popular Honda SBF 600F, and the favorite of novice bikers, the Kawasaki ER-6... They are all good in their own way, despite completely different purposes. Most of them have one thing in common - a powerful 4-cylinder engine, which fully reveals its character only at high speeds. Standing somewhat apart is the aforementioned ER-6, which features an in-line twin that is less powerful but much more flexible, making this road bike an excellent option for beginner motorcyclists.

In the last ten years, Chinese brands have also entered the 600 market. At one time, the Russian-Chinese Stels Benelli 600, the design of which was developed by the famous Italian company Benelli, which was completely bought out by the Chinese motorcycle giant, made a splash. And later he was accompanied by the CFMoto 650NK, externally copied from the Kawasaki EP 6. And, despite the fact that the “Chinese” are inferior to the “Japanese” in technical characteristics, they have enough horses to not let the owner get bored. And the day is not far off when some Chinese motorcycle will be able to outshine its famous competitors.
