Motorcycles MV Agusta

The MV Agusta company began its activities in 1945, when the first motorcycle with a 98 cc engine was produced. see. Initially they wanted to call it Vespa 98, but this name was already reserved for Piaggio and the motorcycle was simply called “98”.

A few years later, a two-stroke 125 cc motorcycle was created, which brought MV Agusta its first race victory. The huge interest in racing from Vincenzo and Domenico Agusta, the two brothers who founded the company, was both a blessing and a curse for the brand. Motorcycles were developed primarily for racing, and mass production faded into the background.

The huge investment in the racing division paid off - from 1958 to 1974 the company won 17 consecutive 500cc world championships. see. In 1958, 1959 and 1960, MV Agusta racers became champions in all classes at once - from 125 to 500 cc. see. At that time, the MV Agusta racing team was the strongest in the world.

However, successes in the “civilian” motorcycle market were not so significant - first of all, this is associated with a strategic mistake by management - the famous 4-cylinder racing engine was not put into mass production, considering that it was too complicated and expensive. At the same time, MV Agusta produces small-capacity road motorcycles Pullman, Turismo Rapido and Raid, the comparative success of which helps the company stay afloat.

In 1970, the 750 Sport model was finally released, equipped with an engine from a racing motorcycle. The bike was expensive and complex, but thanks to the success of the MV Agusta pilots in world championships, the bike became very successful. However, the financial performance of MV Agusta was still dismal and by 1980 the company left racing, and soon the production of motorcycles completely ceased.

In 1991, the company was revived by the manufacturer Cagiva - new models were created, some of which would become the basis for modern MV Agusta motorcycles. And yet, by the end of the 90s, the company again had financial difficulties - from 1999 to 2009, the motorcycle manufacturer was resold several times and currently MV Agusta belongs to the holding company of Claudio Castiglioni.

Despite the difficulties, MV Agusta continues to produce excellent sportbikes and nakeds (charged road motorcycles with minimal body kit). Many private teams use MV Agusta motorcycles for racing, and sales of the “civilian” ones are also growing and many are talking about a new revival of the MV Agusta brand.
