The BMW Motorrad motorcycle division is ready to offer a large number of motorcycles that are attractive in terms of characteristics, appearance and price. One such example is the BMW S1000 RR, which we will review below.

Description

The model began to be mass-produced at the end of 2008, and already in 2009 the first copies entered the market.

The company began producing the second, updated generation of the BMW S1000 RR in 2012.

The latest, currently current version has been in existence since 2015. The third generation was the result of not just a slight restyling, really serious changes were made. The engine was modified and power increased by 6 hp. A suspension equipped with the Dynamic Damping Control system, which was previously installed on the HP4, is installed. An amazing option of the motorcycle is the presence of cruise control, which is not typical for sportbikes.

We invite you to look at the technical characteristics of the third, currently latest generation:

  • engine - 999 cm 3, 199 horsepower;
  • suspension - with DDC system, providing dynamic damping control;

  • clutch: multi-disc type, located in an oil bath;

  • drive - via a lightweight chain;

Superbike appearance

The S1000 RR looks more than serious. The front part is almost completely covered with fairings and trims , but at the back everything is open and accessible for viewing.

We streamline the front of the bike as much as possible. They didn’t forget about the trademark of the front of the motorcycle – asymmetrical headlights located between the air intake of the upper part of the fairing.

The top ends with plastic glass , behind which the dashboard is hidden.

The front wheel is equipped with powerful brake discs. The wing sits low above the wheel and is small in size.

Behind the wheel, only a wide radiator is visible, covered on the sides by fairings.

The bottom of the engine, frame and exhaust system are covered with plastic protection.

From the side, the engine is practically invisible due to the lining; it is only slightly visible through the air intakes, stylistically designed in the form of shark gills .

But between the side overlays the diagonal stripes of the frame are clearly visible . On top there is a solid “hump” of the fuel tank, in front of which the steering wheel is located.

Behind the tank is a small triangular-shaped driver's seat . The rear wing begins from the saddle.

Since this sports motorcycle is serial and can be ridden on general purpose trails , it is a two-seater, but the passenger seat is very small and located high on the rear fender.

The end of the wing is decorated with an LED rear brake light of a very original shape . On the right is a dual exhaust pipe housed in a stylish housing.

Price

At the moment, only the third generation of the BMW S1000RR is being produced, the price of which is $20,900. For the second generation model you will have to pay about 10-13 thousand dollars on the secondary market. The first generation BMW S1000RR is valued at 7,500-10,000 thousand dollars, depending on condition and tuning.

The aluminum-composite frame of the BMW S1000RR uses the engine as part of the load-bearing element , eliminating the lower part of the frame and reducing weight. Also, part of the weight was reduced due to an aluminum pendulum with triangular feathers. The rear monoshock has all three adjustments, and the beefy 45mm front fork is also adjustable. Front suspension travel is 120 mm and rear suspension travel is 117 mm.

The BMW S1000RR's 1440 mm wheelbase, 23.5 degree fork angle and 94 mm ground clearance give the RR amazing agility and cornering precision. The 17-inch wheels are shod with 120/70 front and 190/55 rear tires. The tires are naturally marked ZR.

There are two brake discs with a diameter of 320 mm with four-piston calipers at the front, and a 220 mm disc with a single-piston caliper at the rear. The BMW S1000RR motorcycle is equipped with a racing ABS Pro system, which works in tandem with an inertial-measurement unit (IMU), which in turn measures the forces acting on the motorcycle in six planes. ABS has four operating modes or can be turned off completely.

Tuning

The first thing that comes to mind as a modification to a motorcycle of this class is the installation of a direct-flow exhaust. Everything related to appearance tuning is an individual matter. The motorcycle itself has an outstanding appearance, and it is rare to find those who want to significantly change its appearance. But replacing handles, levers, mirrors and similar accessories is common.

Among the technical changes, an exclusive piston, connecting rods, exhaust system (Akrapovic leads the way, this is already a tradition), as well as a fuel pump are used to increase power to 300+ horsepower. And this is without taking into account a number of electronic modifications to make it all work really smoothly. The most desperate ones install a turbocharger on a stock engine, although this practice has not yet gained popularity in wide circles.

For the 2022 model year, BMW has updated the plastic body kit, improving aerodynamics, which also gives the BMW S1000RR a new unique appearance. Two symmetrical headlights look out from the recesses of the front fairing, and between them there is an air duct that supplies the incoming air flow to the intake system. This is a really cool feature that is increasingly being seen on fast bikes, but be aware that the acceleration curve is quite flat until speeds reach around 160 km/h.

On the front fairing of the Bmw S1000RR there is a convex windshield, under which there is an easily readable 6.5-inch color TFT screen. The clip-ons are designed for a racing position, and if you try to ride in an upright position, your wrists and shoulders begin to numb and your neck begins to ache.

High footpegs enhance the racing position and, combined with a narrow seat, allow you to take corners with your elbow touching the asphalt. Below the headlights there is a scoop that captures the oncoming air flow and passes it through the cooling radiator, then the air exits through a modified and trimmed fairing. The turn signals are integrated into the rear-view mirrors, which reduces air resistance.

The aesthetics of a motorcycle are important, but so is saving weight. The BMW S1000RR has shed a hefty 11.3kg compared to the previous model. BMW attributes many of the improvements to the Flex-Frame, which reduces weight slightly and narrows the 17.4-liter fuel tank.

The standard seat height is 823 mm, and the rear seat cushion can be closed with a cover. The rear light is located at the end of a small mudguard under the tail fairing.

Overall, the BMW S1000RR motorcycle turned out to be hot. It boasts a sophisticated design, which is not typical of pragmatic German motorcycles.
