Honda Lead: technical specifications, photos and reviews

Main settings

The model was called “Honda Lead 50” and was a small-sized single-seater vehicle with a miniature two-stroke engine with a power of 5 hp. With. and consuming only 1.3 liters of fuel for every 100 kilometers. The engine volume did not exceed 49 cc/cm, and was air-cooled.

The Honda Lead 50 scooter did not have a gearbox; the transmission was a CVT type. The small car was distinguished by good maneuverability, the minimum turning radius was only 1.7 meters. The fuel tank held 5.3 liters of fuel.

Sales of the Honda Lead 50 have remained consistently high for six years. And when the scooter was modernized in 1984, received a more powerful engine and turned from a single-seater into a double-seater, the demand for it increased by an order of magnitude.

History of the brand

Honda is a company founded in 1946 by Japanese engineer, inventor and racing driver Soichiro Honda, born in 1906. The company, in its current form and with its more than 50-year history, exists because of his daring, inventive and unconventional way of thinking and acting.

Typa-47X Born into a poor family, Honda, without finishing school, already at the age of 16 became an apprentice at an auto repair shop in Tokyo. His early attachment to motor vehicles was due to his father’s profession - a blacksmith who repaired bicycles and instilled in his son the skills to solve technical problems. In 1928, having saved enough money, he returned to his hometown in Hamamatsu Province and opened the first repair shop there. In the same year, he received the first of hundreds of his subsequent patents - for the idea of replacing wooden spokes in a wheel with metal ones. Honda's inventions in the future brought him fame as a person capable of finding simple solutions to complex problems. In 1938 he invented the piston ring; The production of rings was carried out by the Tokai Seiki Heavy Industry company founded by him in 1937.

1988 models

Six years after the start of production, the company released a new Honda Lead scooter with an AF-20E engine. The popularity of this scooter was amazing in its scope. At that time, there were two more 50cc models on the market, the Suzuki Adress and the Yamaha Axis. With the advent of the Honda Lead AF-20E, sales of Yamaha and Suzuki fell sharply. Dealers of the three leading Japanese companies had to share the sales market.

Technical characteristics of the Honda Lead AF-20 scooter:

  • cylinder volume - 49 cubic cm;
  • engine power - 6.5 liters. With.;
  • torque - 0.73 at a speed of 6000 rpm;
  • compression - 7.2;
  • fuel consumption - 1.72 liters per 100 kilometers at a speed of 40 km/h;
  • cooling - air;
  • gas tank capacity - 7.2 liters;
  • front brakes - disc, ventilated;
  • Rear brakes are drum.

Peculiarities

Along with the thoughtful placement of the main components and assemblies, a decent fuel reserve and efficiency, owners note the ability to operate the mokika on various types of road surfaces. The average price of a Japanese serial moped, depending on the model and condition, varies from five hundred to one and a half thousand dollars.

Users note the excellent characteristics of both the version with a 50 cc engine and the ninety cc version. The second modification is faster, but at speeds over eighty kilometers per hour it is not so stable on the road. This is not surprising, because this technique is designed for moderate movement, and not for cross-country racing.

Original spare parts for the Honda Lead 90 scooter can be purchased to order. This is especially true for plastic. It is quite difficult to find a body kit of the required quality on the open market.

Model HF05

The second most popular scooter was the Honda Lead 90, also created in 1988. The two-seater scooter was produced under the HF05 brand.

Weight and dimensional parameters of the model:

  • dry weight 78 kg:
  • total weight - 85 kg;
  • landing height - 735 mm;
  • ground clearance, ground clearance - 110 mm;
  • center distance - 1235 mm;
  • scooter length - 1755 mm;
  • height - 1060 mm;
  • width - 715 mm;
  • Gas tank capacity is 7.2 liters.

Power point:

  • cylinder volume - 89 cubic/mm;
  • cylinder diameter - 48.0 mm;
  • piston stroke - 49.6 mm;
  • compression - 6.4;
  • maximum power - 8.4 liters. With. at 6500 rpm;
  • torque - Nm 1.0 at 4000 rpm;
  • fuel consumption - 1.85 liters per 100 km at a speed of 50 km/h.

Appearance

A distinctive feature of the scooter is the shape of the plastic. In the front part it has an almost rectangular shape and is, in fact, a shield. Engineers implemented this idea to improve roominess characteristics, but at the same time aerodynamics suffered.

The Honda Lead AF20 is equipped with a powerful headlight with 2 lamps.

The front optics have a narrow rectangular shape, the turn signals are fused with the headlight on the steering wheel. The scooter base is a steel frame AF20 and durable plastic with metal fasteners. You can attach a basket to the front of the scooter; on the driver’s side there is a fairly large glove compartment, where, in addition to keys and documents, more than one bottle of water can fit.

Honda Lead AF20 is a two-seater scooter.

The profile shows an elongated and wide seat that can easily accommodate 2 people. Its rear end is slightly raised and there is an extended trunk with a handle behind the passenger. The rear optics are presented in the form of a strip and are placed in the lower part of the body, next to the rear wheel.

Interesting moment! Due to the specific shape of the plastic, the scooter has a large width, which improves the comfort of the driver and passenger.

Scooter parameters

Honda Lead AF20 has the following parameters: 1755 mm (length), 715 mm (width), 1060 mm (height). The wheelbase is 1235 mm, ground clearance is 110 mm. The dry weight of the scooter is as much as 84 kilograms, the load capacity is up to 200 kg.

Under the seat of the Lead AF20 there is a large glove compartment for hand luggage weighing up to 10 kg.

Next development

In 1998, production of another model of the popular scooter began. It was a two-seater Honda Lead 100 scooter. The new car was distinguished by its streamlined shape and a large headlight in one block with turn signals. The high-quality plastic lining flows smoothly around the wide double seat, giving the impression of solidity and good design.

The headlights include a powerful reflector with two built-in halogen lamps, creating a dual sharp beam of light that covers a sixty-degree wide area in front of the scooter. The taillights are not so powerful, their design corresponds to low-speed scooters, when powerful brake light and turn signal lamps do not make sense; 10-15 watt bulbs are enough.

Technical characteristics of the “hundredth” scooter

Honda Lead scooter - owner reviews

Lidolyub

honda lead 90

We are in our 14th season with it. More than 120,000 km of mileage. This is just me. It has been repaired since 1992, but the admiration for its proximity to perfection and for the skill of its creators does not wane. Last winter, for the first time, I disassembled the gearbox and replaced it I only needed the output shaft bearings. There is no wear on the gear teeth. Not at all. Only polished working surfaces. Of course, the Liqui Moli GL-4+5 transmission is like that... Yes, and I finally got rid of the oil system and pour oil into gasoline. It’s ideal, but designed for FACTORY gasoline consumption, i.e. about two and a bit liters per 100 km. Then the oil/gasoline ratio will be 1/(slightly 20). And how much do we have more often? That's it. For many years, my consumption was about 3.5 l/100 km. That is. oil/gasoline = 1/35, and this is tolerable only for the best 2 tons of oils, and not in hot weather. Only recently it was possible to bring the engine and gasoline consumption to the factory state - 2.3 l/100 km (highway), total consumption - 2.7 -2.8 l/100 km. But now, without an oil system, you can select the oil/gasoline ratio for any oil. For Motul Power it turned out to be 1/27. The scooter now runs easily and gurgles softly. I had a Valvoline 2t for 10 years, and everything seemed to work good. Now I don’t want it anymore. In 2015, he sealed up the oil pump with some nasty thing like “non-degradable viscosity modifier”, and the engine was overhauled. Thus began the era of light 2t oils. Now engine overheating is more dangerous than it was with heavy oils. Therefore : 1) No rich mixture - average in cold weather, poor in hot weather; 2) The thickness of the gasket under the cylinder head is no more than the factory one, it’s 0.25 mm. If anyone doesn’t know, it directly affects power-heating-consumption, because . changes the working volume of the combustion chamber; 3) AI-92 and not higher (its combustion t is lower); 4) Do not increase the crankshaft speed by setting the variator, the engine should be slightly throttled. This is how the Lead is intended - an economical economic (cargo) scooter. But this technical details. The car is wonderful. With a diode head light, an additional battery-powered headlight (also diode), a lightweight quick-detachable windshield and illumination of the seat compartment, floor pan and trunk, I drive with pleasure even 250 km from home. There are any spare parts for it, from Chinese to Megazipovsky original ones with Taiwanese ones in the middle. This summer I installed a NICE RICH crankshaft - the third one in 26 years, with Japanese bearings and oil seals according to the catalog - and the consumption dropped by 0.2 l / 100 km. Apparently, the old oil seals did not hold the crankcase pressure pulsations and the combustion chamber was not purged was full-fledged. I don’t mind the money.” “We have, we have what we have. You and I, everything that is valuable has no price.” (Group 5'Nizza).

Simply a great scooter! I bought this one eight years ago. I took it from the former owner from the garage after three years of inactivity. It started up the first time and served for two years without any breakdowns or minor replacements. Then, after replacing the piston and oil pump, it ran for another three years until I had to sell it.

The scooter is just FIRE! It can easily reach 80 km/h even with a passenger. How much I have ridden on mine, what places and gullies I haven’t ridden in))

General impression:

Eternal scooter.

Advantages:

  • Easy to manage
  • big seat
  • spacious trunk
  • good front fork
  • very reliable device

Flaws:

  • Bad stock light
  • The oil pump died quickly

When I first got behind the wheel of the Leada, I immediately realized that the scooter is very comfortable, firstly, it has a large seat, under which a fairly spacious trunk is hidden, and secondly, this scooter is easy to control even for beginners, it has a good jerk and speed gain, and much more. During operation, I felt its pros and cons, probably the main disadvantage is the oil pump, which breaks down very quickly, replacing it with a Chinese equivalent is pointless, it is much better to add oil to the gas tank, at the rate of 30 ml of oil per 1 liter of gasoline. The second disadvantage is that the light in the scooter is quite weak, I solved the problem by converting the headlight to a powerful LED one. One of the main advantages, of course, is the indestructible front fork. In general, I have driven more than 40,000 km on our scooter on our “ideal” roads, and I plan to travel no less.

Hi all. I want to share my impressions of Honda Lead. So, I bought it a little out of order, and more specifically, the muffler was torn off. But I made the muffler quickly. In a moped, everyone is welcome without exception. I drove it for a long time, and I still ride it, even in September. It is very comfortable, a two-seater, which makes it possible for two people to ride; for the second passenger there are special handles and a place to put their feet. The moped is a hundred cc, it accelerates very quickly, since it is a two-stroke, the speed is not low, the speedometer shows 120 km. an hour, but mine goes 90-100, regardless of whether you are going uphill or downhill. The moped broke down a couple of times! The first time it simply stalled on the road, and for a long time I could not start it, by the way, this is a case when something rattles in the belt area. It turned out that it simply overheated, because after two hours I was able to start it and drive again. Second case. Again, it stalled on the road, but it wasn’t a matter of overheating, but the fact that someone was pumping gas while I was away, but I was able to start it again, the battery was drained, but I still started it right off the bat! In general, now I know what to expect from this moped) But the main thing is not that it stalls once a year, but that it always starts if it stalls, in short, it cannot be broken at all, just like the Ural. By the way, there is a little advice, if someone buys it, then before leaving, let it sit and run for 10 minutes, the sound of the engine will noticeably fade, then you can drive, that is, you need to warm it up. (If I had known this from the very beginning, I would not have stalled on it the first time)). My scooter pulls worse with two people than with one, so it’s better to ride alone, that is, “fly”. There is also a bad shock absorber, but at least it’s okay, but if you drive together, it’s very noticeable even on the slightest bumps, I bought it second-hand, but I’ll repeat that this is my story. And I also have an old model, I don’t know the year itself, but imagine what will happen if you buy a new model!

It’s a cool scooter, I like it, I love these, although it’s not fast, but it wouldn’t be bad to ride it. I recommend it to all my friends and I really want it myself... when I was a child I absolutely couldn’t live without it, but now I can’t live without it. a friend had one, only bright blue, it really was only 60 km/h on the speedometer, but he and I still drove 55-60))) I really liked riding, but I didn’t like that I didn’t have my own, now I’ll definitely buy one for myself . Now I’ll buy it, since I found a good job in a store selling those same scooters. the work is not dusty, but the pay is excellent. AND THE SCOOTER IS GOOD, you don’t need a license, and it hardly consumes gasoline)))) I RECOMMEND IT TO EVERYONE)))

Until last year, I was not interested in motorcycles and scooters, but only admired them from time to time. And from time to time I heard something from traveling acquaintances.

And then suddenly I really wanted it. Just completely. It was already July, and I had heard almost nothing about specific models and equipment. And of the brands, somehow Honda immediately sunk into my soul.

First of all, Japan, of course.

Secondly, some kind of internal preference appeared. I didn’t have a license, so there were only 50cc scooters to choose from. According to numerous reviews and reviews on the Internet, the Honda Lead seemed to be the most reliable. Having chosen a small salon nearby, I went to have a look and sit. I sat on Dio, Tact and others. Joker is beautiful, of course, but more expensive and not suitable for traffic jams. For two, perhaps only the Lead had a more or less comfortable seat. Therefore, it was chosen and purchased :) Although it is not a motorcycle, but just a scooter, before that I had only ridden a bicycle and the first meters were scary to ride, I admit) Having made a few laps for testing, I said goodbye to the interior and went out onto the road. After driving around the area a bit and gaining minimal driving experience, I headed home. The shortest route was through Prospekt Mira, where I didn’t really want to go; after all, it was a busy street. I needed to get from Krasnobogatyrskaya Street to Krasnaya Sosny Street. The distance is small. Looking at the map, I tried to find a shorter passage through Yauzskaya Alley (I’ve walked this way more than once and there’s even a crossing under the railway line), but I ran into a barrier. Therefore, we had to turn around and go to Prospekt Mira. However, additional experience was gained and it was no longer so scary. Remembering only that on a scooter I must keep to the right lane, I turned around under the bridge and, driving through Selskokhozyaystvennaya Street, went to the Botanical Garden metro station, and from there, through Serebryakova passage, I drove onto the Severyaninsky Bridge and arrived at the end point :) This was the first drive. Until late autumn we lived happily with him, and then he went to another owner.

Advantages:

  • two full places
  • powerful engine
  • smooth suspension.

Flaws:

  • the exhaust system is clogged.

Honda Lead is respected even by those scooterists who for some reason do not like it. Big, strong, conservatively styled, a sort of “Hulk” in the world of scooters.

It is comfortable and roomy, it is a full-fledged double (designed for two people), and taking this into account, the manufacturer had to put a normal suspension on it, which is quite rare.

Both versions, both 50 and 90 cubes, are good, but the 90th version will certainly be more fun. On the move, the Lead resembles a cruise liner, driving it is a pleasure, but no more than 60-70 mph, in my opinion. The scooter's power reserve is generally very large and it is capable of accelerating at a much higher speed than its driving and aerodynamic properties allow. At a speed of 80 km/h I felt somehow uneasy and, frankly speaking, scared.

Our hero's plastic is good quality and at the same time scarce. I bought my scooter used. u. without plastic head, and I encountered such a problem that it is almost impossible to find it in my city.

Another problem that I had to experience myself was the exhaust pipe and muffler. The fact is that, as it turned out, from using low-quality gasoline, oil, or for some other reason unknown to me, Lid’s exhaust system very often becomes clogged and the moped simply stops moving and then completely stalls and refuses to start. After reading quite a few forums, I realized that I am far from alone and there are quite a few people who have encountered such a problem.

In general, the picture that emerges is that the Honda Lead, despite its minor errors, still remains for me the best scooter of all the ones I have used, because it essentially has no disadvantages, but there are many advantages.

General impression:

A large and strong scooter with a smooth ride.

Hi all! I had two of these mopeds. It drives great, it doesn’t get off the ground much, but then it goes well and sets the needle at 60 kilometers per hour! The moped is of very high quality and comfortable, the front lever fork does its job (although they say it is dangerous in turns, I didn’t notice). Four of us rode on it, including two big ones (about 80 kg) and it accelerated to 50 kilometers per hour (you can’t do that, it dies quickly)! It is advisable to be driven by 1-2 people, then it will last a long time if it is originally alive (Japanese piston and crankshaft, the operation of which was not interfered with in our garages)! Fuel consumption with traffic jams in the city and very active driving is up to five liters. The lights on one of the mopeds turned off and it consumed approximately a liter less fuel. The route is about 3 liters. Be careful when braking sharply with only the front brake, the probability of falling is very high (I have not seen this on other motorcycle equipment)! AF20!

I bought this last season secondhand in a somewhat tired condition for 35k. I replaced the crankshaft and tires and now I can’t be happier! Great moped. I am 30 years old, 80 kg. , I go to work every day. By the way, at the end of the season I will be selling it, because by the next season I will be switching to Hornet.

Greetings to the readers of this article! I want to tell you about a two-seater scooter from the world-famous Honda brand.

Almost a year ago I became the proud owner of a 100 cc Honda Lead. The condition at the time of purchase was, to put it mildly, “not ice”, the plastic was cracked, I’m generally silent about the painting (at least 3 different colors, which looked like they were put on with a broom), the ignition switch did not work, it was generally unknown what was going on in the wiring, and much more ... I was pleased that after a long period of inactivity (about a year) it started up almost immediately. Of course, this required a little digging, but these are minor things)

First impressions after tact af-24 are absolutely amazing! What I immediately felt was a very soft suspension, I naturally liked it. The large and comfortable seat allows you to ride very easily and comfortably even with a passenger. The only negative is that it is a bit short and sometimes gets stuck on its belly. The trunk allows you to easily install a pannier, but I don’t see the point in this, since a Vega helmet can easily fit under the seat. Regarding the engine, yes, there is more than enough power, fifty dollars are nervously smoking on the sidelines. Various climbs, driving over rough terrain is not a problem for the Lidka. Brakes: front disc, rear drum, combined braking system installed, so stopping is almost instantaneous. The light is excellent, I don’t use the far one, the near one is enough. The tank is 7.5 liters, at a speed of 60-70 km/h the scooter consumes 2.5 liters, you can even ride long distances. During the entire period of operation, it practically did not fail, and if it did, it was my own fault. If you change consumables on time and do not skimp on their quality, then the device is very reliable!

I have a Lida 90cc, mileage is 41,414 km. I've changed the belt the whole time, the speedometer doesn't work, the only thing I don't understand is why my finger began to rattle and there was a slight vibration either in the front or in the back. Gasoline takes about 3.5, depending on the speed. The device is simply a thing, the main thing is to look after it and it really lasts forever! the only drawback, which is really due to the optics, is a little uncomfortable when there are oncoming trucks, it blows away a little......

Good day everyone! I bought a Lead 90 a week ago. My first moped. I bought it without mileage in the Russian Federation at a motorcycle dealership. The price for prepared ones is from 30 thousand. it all depends on the year of manufacture and volume. You can buy it cheaper from a privately owned dealer in Russia. but there is no guarantee. And she is needed. It stalled two days ago. I took it to the salon. They said that some kind of reed valve had come off. replaced immediately. I am completely satisfied with the driving performance. Accelerated to 90 km/h. Then I was afraid. Although there was still some stock. Maybe these test drives caused the breakdown. although the masters said it was unlikely. It’s simply impossible to provide for everything on a moped that came from Japan, so they give a guarantee. I hope this was my first and last disappointment in this moped.

Comfort and dynamics

Riding the Honda Lead is a pleasure, the scooter ride is smooth, and the complete absence of vibration is impressive. The scooter was clearly designed for lovers of calm and measured movement at low speeds on a good road. Ideal for beginners who have no experience riding sports bikes and who prefer to stay away from extreme sports. Comfort is undoubtedly present when using the scooter. However, the dynamics of the car are kept at a fairly modest level; the Honda Lead cannot be accelerated so suddenly and immediately. The speed has to be increased gradually. Then the scooter is obedient and responds to the slightest movement of the throttle. If you add gas suddenly, the engine will stall.

Running parameters

The undoubted advantage of the scooter is its chassis, rationally designed brakes and suspension. The front brake is a ventilated disc brake, very effective. The rear drum, which works softly, never jams, turns on with a slight delay relative to the front one, and thus the scooter stops in a split second, without skidding or skidding.

The scooter is equipped with a brake system that never fails. The front suspension is a powerful fork of a lever design, combined with a hydraulic shock absorber. Does not cause any complaints, but requires attention when entering a sharp turn. If the speed is higher than optimal, the suspension arm begins to vibrate and the scooter may lose control. Therefore, when driving on a winding road, you must maintain a minimum speed.

Some models produced in 1999 were equipped with telescopic front suspensions, but they did not take root because they had to operate within a limited amplitude and high loads often caused the unit to break. In addition, such a suspension was more rigid, unlike a lever one, and “caught” all the irregularities, causing shaking.

General information

The Mokik Honda Lead 90 is equipped with a seat designed for two people. In addition, the moped has an original design, an informative instrument panel and a reliable power unit. The scooter is equipped with a lever suspension and is suitable for traveling on different types of roads. This is due to the presence of pendulums, which dampen vibrations when overcoming unevenness and potholes.

The technology in question accelerates up to thirty kilometers smoothly and quickly. The maximum speed that the HF-05 modification can reach is almost one hundred kilometers per hour. The main advantages of the Japanese moped Honda Lead 90 include excellent ergonomics, smooth ride, efficiency, reliability and long service life. It is worth noting that if the wrong oil or fuel is used, problems with pump operation and engine overheating may occur. Therefore, you should fill in fuels and lubricants recommended by the manufacturer.

Leadership

The Honda Lead scooter in the entire history of production was considered the most successful model among its kind. The model is still a leader today, thanks to its exceptional technical characteristics.

Initially, the scooter was created for intensive use, so high-strength parts were immediately included in the design. Therefore, the car turned out to be super reliable, with a long service life and wear resistance. The performance characteristics of the scooter provide a high degree of cross-country ability, which is sometimes of great importance. At the same time, the engine does not suffer from dust, dirt and other external factors, since clean air enters the carburetor from under the seat. The scooter is quite suitable for use on country roads. In winter, the car can overcome snow cover up to twenty centimeters thick.

From the first days of production of the scooter, I was concerned with high-quality and varied painting. Initially, the classic white and black colors in various combinations were taken as the basis, and then they began to use a range of twelve colors. Various combinations of bright colors significantly increased the attractiveness of small two-wheeled cars and this had a positive effect on sales.

User impressions

Owners of Japanese-made scooters highlight a number of advantages and disadvantages of a moped. Among the advantages, the following aspects are noted:

  • high quality casing plastic;
  • excellent running parameters;
  • ease of landing;
  • high engine life;
  • beautiful design and ergonomics;
  • good speed and dynamics;
  • stability on the road with any surface;
  • elaborate suspension unit.

Among the disadvantages of the Japanese mini-motorcycle, users highlight an unreliable oil pump, possible overheating of the piston group and rather weak maneuverability. In general, the Honda Lead 90 scooter is an excellent vehicle for driving around the city and traveling short distances on country roads.

How to choose a model

The most popular modifications from the Lead Honda line are the “50 cc” and “90 cc” versions. Both scooters are assembled in identical housings, but the engine power differs significantly. The engine thrust is what you need to focus on first. Some buyers will be satisfied with the engine power of 5 liters. With. (50 cc), most scooters are equipped with these. Owners who are used to driving together are better off purchasing the HF05 model with an 8 hp engine. s., which according to all data exceeds 50 cc.

Modifications

The second generation of Japanese scooters "Honda Lead 90" is represented by several variations, ranging from a model with a fifty-cc engine to a more powerful modification, the engine power of which is almost twice as strong. Let's briefly consider each of the options.

  1. Model AF 20. This mokik is distinguished by a small volume of the power unit, which is 49.9 cubic meters. cm. Otherwise, according to the owners, the scooter is stable on the road, perfectly balanced, most vibrations are absorbed by the front fork with levers thanks to a well-thought-out design.
