Review of the Yamaha V-max 1700 motorcycle

The continuation of the VMAX line and the successor to the Yamaxa V-MAX 1200 version was the Yamaxa VMAX 1700 model, first presented at the exhibition in Tokyo in 2005 . Three years later, mass production begins. In the concern's model range, the motorcycle is named Yamaxa VMAX. No indication of volume or any additional symbols.

Like the previous model, the bike is immediately classified as a dragster (or unofficial classification - power cruiser).

Peculiarities

The release of the model continues. The motorcycle is offered on all continents, for all countries.

VMAX became a legend almost from the moment it went on sale - there was simply no alternative model at that time.

The designer took into account all the shortcomings noted by users of the earlier version, and used individual solutions previously tested on the company’s sports. The result exceeded expectations. Over the 10 years of production, the motorcycle did not have to be modified or made any fundamental changes.

Specifications

Unlike the previous model, a regular engine was installed on the motorcycle. But to improve its performance, the motorcycle received three additional systems that only the R1 previously had:

  • YCC-I - Yamaha Chip Controlled Intake - automatically changes the length of the intake valve. Electronics control. Savings in fuel consumption.
  • YCC-T - Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle - electronically controlled throttle.
  • EXUP - smoothing of power delivery throughout the entire range using a special damper in the exhaust pipes. And also electronics control.

With the exception of these systems, the engine was standard - 4 cylinders, 4 strokes, V-shaped pistons with an angle of 650.

Engine – right side view.

Engine view from the left.

Collector pipe.

Engine – bottom view.

  • Working volume - 1679 cm3.
  • Power - 200 hp
  • Number of valves - 16 (4 per cylinder).
  • Cooling - liquid/air.
  • Fuel supply - injector, EIS 48, 4x.
  • Ignition is electronic (TCI).
  • Start - electric starter.
  • Tank volume - 15 l.

Transmission and clutch

The motorcycle has a 5-speed gearbox. According to user reviews, the gears turn on well, but so softly that sometimes when switching to the next one you can stay on the current one.

The cardan drive installed on the model can survive the entire motorcycle, provided that the oil in the gearbox is regularly changed.

Like the engine, the box was supplemented with the Yamaxa Slipper Clutch . In other models it is called simply - slipper clutch .

  • It is multi-disc, oil bath . Transmission of forces - cable .
  • The main drive is a cardan .

Brakes

The brake system has also been redesigned. The designers took into account that, according to users, the prototype had “wobbly” brakes.

Front brakes – 2 discs.

Rear brakes – 1 disc.

The drive remained standard, hydraulic, but the front axle was a 6-piston radial caliper , and the size of the rear disc was comparable to the size of the front ones on other bikes.

Front: brakes

  • Number of disks - 2;
  • Diameter - 320 mm;
  • Support - 6-piston.

Rear brakes

  • Number of disks - 1.
  • Diameter - 298 mm.
  • Support - 1-piston.

Already in the stock configuration, ABS is installed on both wheels.

Review of the Yamaha V-max 1700 motorcycle

I only managed to ride this motorcycle 3 times, but that was enough to make me fall in love with it. The motorcycle has a V-shaped 4-cylinder engine with a capacity of 1700 cm3, a 5-speed gearbox, and the main gear is a cardan. The engine produces almost 200 horsepower (!!!), consumption is about 15 liters per hundred, and the tank also holds 15 liters. The price of a new motorcycle ranges from 1 million rubles. After the trip, the impressions were the best - a very powerful engine and (well, very, very) comfortable both to operate and to sit in. The owner of this miracle does not have any problems, he just changes consumables and the rear tire, as it is often worn out. The Japanese engine belongs to the category of millionaires. This cruiser is a happy medium for motorcyclists, as it is suitable for people who don't like sport bikes and Harleys. We can say that this is the best motorcycle in its class. The money spent on this motorcycle is completely well spent; riding it will be a tremendous pleasure.

Gorgeous Yamaha. This motorcycle is definitely not for beginners or amateurs.

The engine decides everything here; 1700 cc is a lot for a motorcycle that produces 200 horsepower. And a very pleasant sound of power and wildness. The design of the motorcycle is more classic, but when you look at this motorcycle, for the first 20 minutes you look at the engine, it is huge. As for speed and acceleration, as you know, it has an electric speed limiter, which allows it to reach speeds of up to 220 km/h. Acceleration is quite soft and confident, but immediately after 220 km/h it immediately disappears, and the motorcycle rides at a constant speed, honestly not a very pleasant feeling. But they say that the limiter can be removed. But the disadvantages don't end there. Its tank is only 15 liters, and 1700 cubic meters will quickly consume all the fuel, very high consumption. Another minus is the weight, it weighs 310 kg, and this affects the handling, the motorcycle is a bit stiff to handle.

Honestly, I wouldn't buy it, especially for $18,000. Looking at it is more impressive than driving it.

Good luck to all.

After a short period of owning the motor, I decided to scribble down a short review, in case anyone is tormented by the question of whether to take it or not, and my feelings will help. I've been riding for almost a month. Mileage 400 km. I understood the main thing - THIS IS MY MOTORCYCLE. This is what I wanted. The fears that tormented me during the waiting period completely dissipated... I will try to describe everything objectively.

When choosing a motto, I did not find an alternative to it. I was looking for. Max is Max, that says it all. Its appearance is, naturally, a matter of taste. There is no plastic, no fancy stickers, there is bare metal, open brazen POWER. You see it, you really feel it without even starting or getting on the motorcycle... There is something in this... When you turn the ignition key and press the gray start button, the attack finally begins. The V-bar with a volume of 1.7 does not work loudly, but, bitch, you feel it with your whole body - no joke!!! The roar of two titanium silencers cannot be confused with anything!!!

Now on to the running gear. I don’t really have anything to compare it to; before this there was a liter with 125 hp. Feel. It steers well, corners easily and predictably, despite the total weight of 510 kg there is no feeling of weight. There were concerns about maneuvering in the parking lot, where you have to push with your feet - fortunately everything is easy and simple, I was worried about this... You can talk a lot about acceleration and only with signs like these!!!! but you have to learn first. Correct acceleration on Max - 1st gas axle-box blinker, 2nd gas axle-box blinker, 3rd gas axle-box blinker….

I can’t do that))) But the acceleration is just awesome! (I also softened this) Somehow, switching from 2nd to 3rd at about 6 thousand and 100 km, I missed a gear and stayed in 2nd - instantly my rear went into a skid... the pilot had a burning desire to pee... 167 n.m - this is not a joke... At the same time, the brakes are more than adequate! They pacify this mountain of rage no worse than the orderlies in the violent department of the psychiatric hospital! If on Kava my ABS worked extremely rarely, I remember almost all the cases, but here it chirps constantly...

Regarding deflation. On the Z-ke there was at least a windshield, but above 180 the driver was, to put it mildly, not comfortable, I was lying on the tank and my thoughts were only about what I would think if my head was torn off... here even at 235, and I didn’t accelerate any further , because the running-in, all the work, and the limiter, his mother..., you don’t change your position, you just rest your butt on the shoulder on the seat, your hands on the strut on the steering wheel... and there’s no windshield at all!!! The only thing is that it takes your legs off the footrests, they would be a little back, like in sports. Although this can also be solved by installing tuned running boards..

There is so much tuning for this moto that your eyes run wild and money flies away)) by the way, if anyone is interested in the cost, I will answer either in gv or by phone, this is not the conversation here... This season I limited myself to only sliders on the engine covers, on the engine and on the axles and I placed the grill on the radiators - all this is not a show off, but protection. It won’t be difficult to topple the bike even just by rolling it, and scratching the air intakes is not at all part of my plans. on the grill. is also more than a practical thing. Because the radiators are simply huge and take on all the power of flying stones, of which there are quite a few on our roads... well, but how it looks, again, is purely personal, I, for example, like it. I immediately installed tuned knobs, like those on Kava, very informative and stylish. And even folding ones, if so... There are plans to buy transparent covers for the engine, exhaust tips, a carbon body kit and tuned optics... but this is in the winter, and for now this is what we have...

By the way, about the cons! there are none.))) except for a huge appetite and a small tank. The tank is enough for a day. Sometimes. If you drive a little/))) In general, 100 km has never been enough for me... But it doesn’t bother me, I always have 20 liters of 98 in the garage))

Dimensions and weight

The curb weight of the motorcycle is 310 kg . Chrome version, for the USA - 311 kg .

Dry - 292 kg .

The dimensions were not much different from the prototype:

  • the bike has grown in length - from 2,301 to 2,396 mm ;
  • width - from 796 to 821 mm ;
  • in height - from 1,161 to 1,191 mm ;

Wheelbase - 1371 mm . The saddle height has increased by 40 mm - 775 mm .

For whom is it intended?

The low seating position of the bike, as well as the low seat height, makes for a comfortable ride for a person of average and short stature.

The low-set seat provides a slightly relaxed seating position with a slight forward lean.

The classic seating position, which does not require much bending of the knees or bending over the steering wheel, can also suit tall people.

Advantages

Yamaha V MAX 1700 is a motorcycle that can be called exclusive and unique without any discounts.

  • Appearance.
  • Powerful motor.
  • Great dynamics.
  • Easy maintenance.
  • Large selection of components and parts for tuning.
  • Excellent, responsive brakes, but ABS could be made less sensitive.

Big, nimble, one plus without options - this is what the owners say.

A short review about the V-max 1700. There are many reviews on the Internet, including videos, so I will write briefly my impressions, without describing the technical characteristics. Those who choose a motorcycle should know about the pros and cons of this bike, so here are my impressions. Let's start with advantages 1 - the appearance, a very beautiful, technologically advanced and brutal bike, attracts attention and admiring glances. 2 - accelerates beyond competition, the torque allows you to drive and accelerate in any gear. Accelerates in an instant, at 230 cutoff. It really blows away from the seat, it’s good that there is a backrest 3 - the seating position is comfortable, your arms don’t get numb, the seat is very wide, the mirrors are informative 4 - the suspension is capacious, the motorcycle is down, doesn’t wobble on the road, at the same time there is no feeling of bulkiness, you can get into every hole, as long as the mirrors go through, the exhaust is slightly narrower than the width of the mirrors (although on many motorcycles the exhaust is squashed due to the fact that it protrudes so much in width) 5 - almost any vehicle can be pulled up during acceleration))) 6 - excellent, the best brakes I have ever seen, which, together with ABS, make the bike very controllable. 7 - ease of maintenance, all liquids and filters can be easily changed by an ordinary person. Now about the features of the moto, let’s call it that, since it’s hard to call them disadvantages. Nuances, in general))) 1 - the motorcycle is expensive and its operation is expensive, you need to be prepared for this. It is clear that most likely they are not buying such a waste of money. but still, for some it may be an unpleasant surprise that it is quite expensive to drive. Here's an example - fuel consumption if you drive briskly is about 13 liters per hundred square kilometers. Almost 5 liters of expensive oil need to be poured into the engine. The air filter is only original, it costs 5,000 rubles in 20201, you still need to be able to buy it))) There are no analogues, except for K&N, but I didn’t dare to install a zero. Rubber in an exclusive size, is expensive, wears out quickly))) Tax on 200 horses))) 2 - fuel consumption, if you pile it on, is huge, and the tank is small))) Those who like to travel need to install a tuned tank. 3 - a short wheelbase makes the motorcycle shake, even if you lower the suspension 4 - a high center of gravity, at low speeds the motorcycle tries to break and fall over, and at high speeds, especially during acceleration, the motorcycle is reluctant to steer, that is, when overtaking, this must be kept in mind, when accelerating, you need to be able to push it back into line. In general, you need to get used to it, after adaptation it steers normally 5 - the motorcycle is really powerful and angry, if the road is wet or dusty, or at the markings when opening sharply, the motorcycle instantly goes into the axle box with the stern skidding, in the first place it repeatedly laid down bricks during an unexpected drift))) There are often situations when you forget and drive fast in situations where you shouldn’t do this. In general, the spendthrift provokes annealing. 6 - lack of wind protection, I honestly can’t imagine. how they drive it on long-distance trips, although some people talked about it on YouTube 7 - it’s very hot, it immediately gets warm in traffic jams, I couldn’t overheat, but on warm days the Carlson threshes like crazy even when driving at low speed Summary: a mot for the soul , anneal, for short holds. Not recommended for beginners, only for experienced riders. It's better to have it as a second motorcycle in the stable
