which way to unscrew the spark plug on Izh Planet 5

Motorcycle malfunctions - the engine does not start

The engine may also not start if there is excess fuel in the cylinders, especially on a hot engine.

There is no sparking on the spark plug electrodes

After making sure that the ignition key is inserted all the way (the control lamp is on and the signal is working), unscrew the spark plugs, check the gap between the electrodes and, connecting their bodies to ground, press the trigger lever several times. If there is a fairly good spark between the electrodes of the spark plugs, then the cause of the malfunction should be sought in the engine power system.

If during this check there is no spark between the electrodes of the spark plugs or it is very weak, then it is necessary:

  1. Make sure the battery is charged; The control lamp should be fully illuminated and not go out when the signal is turned on.
  2. Check the reliability of the battery contacts.
  3. Test the fuse for serviceability.
  4. Remove the tip of the high voltage wire from the spark plug, bring it to the ground at a distance of 1.5-2 mm and, pressing the trigger lever, check for the presence of a spark between the ground and the tip. The presence of which indicates a faulty spark plug (insulation breakdown) that should be replaced. If there is no spark, make sure that the high voltage wires are in good condition.
  5. Inspect the condition, clean and adjust the gap between the breaker contacts.
  6. If necessary, replace the anvil and hammer.
  7. Turn on the ignition and open the breaker contacts by hand. If a yellow weak spark jumps between them or there is no spark, then replace the capacitor.
  8. If after performing all the previous operations there is still no spark, then the ignition coil should be replaced.

There is no fuel supply to the motorcycle carburetor

We press the drowner and fill the float chamber to make sure that fuel is present. If there is no fuel, check the serviceability of the carburetors themselves. If there is no filling, it is necessary to find the fault and eliminate it.

  1. Check the presence of gasoline in the tank and its quality (the presence of water, large amounts of oil and mechanical impurities is unacceptable).
  2. Inspect and, if necessary, clean the air hole in the fuel tank cap.
  3. Disconnect the fuel lines from the carburetors and blow them out one at a time with compressed air.
  4. Remove the sump and fuel tap filter, disassemble, wash in gasoline and after assembly blow with compressed air.

Carburetors are faulty or misadjusted

  1. Remove, disassemble, wash the parts in gasoline and blow out the jets with compressed air.
  2. Reinstall and check the fuel level in the float chambers. When installing, pay attention to the condition of the gaskets and the reliability of tightening the nuts securing the carburetor to the cylinders.
  3. make quality adjustments as stated in the instructions.

Spark plug characteristics

A motorcycle spark plug has a thermal characteristic, which is designated by a heat rating.
The higher this number, the colder the candle. There are two types of candle temperature:

  1. A hot spark plug heats up more during engine operation, since it has less heat dissipation from the central electrode and insulator. Engine oil hits the spark plug, heats up and burns quickly, but spark formation is not disrupted. Such spark plugs are suitable for low-boost engines (installed on choppers). When the heat is too strong, the oil may ignite from the spark plug rather than from a spark. Then glow ignition occurs, work stops, engine power is lost, and it may break down.
  2. A cold spark plug heats up less and prevents glow ignition from occurring, since it has greater heat removal from the central electrode and insulator. But since its temperature is not very high, the engine oil is not burned, which can prevent the formation of a spark. Such spark plugs are suitable for highly boosted engines in which the compression level is high (installed on sports motorcycles).

If a motorcycle spark plug often burns out, it is almost always due to the operation of vacuum carburetors.

For a low-powered engine, I recommend using hot spark plugs in cold weather, with a heat rating of 8, 11. If the engine power is 26 kilowatts and there are no good cooling conditions, and the weather is hot, then cold spark plugs with a heat rating of 14, 17 are more suitable. In winter it is better Just use candles with a protruding heat cone.

Modernization

The production of the IZH Planet-4 motorcycle has undergone a number of changes. Thus, the design used a generator whose operation is based on permanent magnets. This part also has a contactless ignition system, which, in turn, operates independently of the battery. In addition, the engine itself is equipped with a special separation-type lubrication system pump. This eliminated the need to use a gasoline-oil mixture. The IZH Planeta-4 motorcycle is equipped with a four-speed gearbox with an eccentric mechanism for disengaging the clutch and a more powerful motor chain. The front disc brake is hydraulically actuated, and the suspension system uses improved shock absorbers. In addition, changes also affected the kinematics of the brake drive for the wheel located at the rear.

The best candles for IZH Jupiter 5

Hello guys! I’m writing the first post on restoring an old horse made by Izhmash.

After I successfully remembered him and brought him closer to me, you can read HERE. And then a week passed, then another, and until I forgot about it again, I decided to allocate a little bit of wood for it and off I went. Because the motorcycle was not at all prepared for winter storage, and just stood, since some summer of 2007 or 2008, on the side of the garage. I didn’t know how it would start or whether it would start at all. But a pleasant surprise awaited me. The battery, found in the dark corners of an old garage, fairly covered with dust and cobwebs, turned out to be completely dead. We dealt with it simply, sold it to the gypsies from Unix for 120 rubles, thereby receiving a discount on a new one costing 910-120 = 790 rubles.

But in order to start our thresher I also needed spark plugs, because... I brought a motorbike with just one candle, and it was a very old USSR model, and even though it was working, after checking at the stand with the guys from NGK-service, at Builders, two candles were bought for 164 rubles.

Total investment so far: 1118 forever wooden...

What's the outcome guys?! Let's see...

What I found out after I started the car... First of all, I like it so much! Of course, there are cooler bikes, etc., but damn “Izhak”! Secondly, there will be a lot of work with him. And the investment is far from final... What I found with a visual inspection... 1) Clutch, it’s missing! 2) Ignition, you need to set it according to your mind. 3) Suspension, front fork is dead, rear shock absorbers are live, but very soft. 4) Brakes, there are none! 5) The chain is stretched and needs replacement. 6) Changing the fluid, maybe I’ll start to rebuild the engine again. 7) Basics!

registration... At the moment there are no docks (lost during the move), a complete restoration is needed.8) All that was left of the spendthrift was a book. By the way, why is this mot doubly interesting to me! He's like a brother to me! It was purchased in the “shaggy” year of 1989 for sale, by the Urzhum store for sale on October 30, which means it was released somewhere not far within this month, roughly speaking, it is my age... Motu is 28 years old! And it works! This is cool! A bunch of little things from rubber bands to more expensive parts.

Here is an article about labeling candles. Which ones to put in the motor - see the repair instructions for the motor

You need to “read” the indices like this: A K U 17 D V R M - 1 ******9

The marking of domestic spark plugs is determined by OST 37.003.081 - 98. 1 - The first letter indicates the thread size on the spark plug body. There are two options: “A” is a thread M14x1.25, “M” is M18x1.5 2 - There are two types of installing a spark plug in the cylinder head. The most common way is to connect flat supporting surfaces (plugs and heads) through an O-ring (in this case, position “2” is empty). Another option is with a conical spark plug bearing surface (indicated by the letter “K”) 3 - The wrench size is indicated here. “U” is the hexagon size reduced to 16.0 mm, as on spark plugs for sixteen-valve engines. The letter "M" corresponds to a 19mm wrench. And if the letter is not indicated, as with most candles, then the key size is 20.8 mm 4 - The numbers correspond to heat numbers from the series 8, 11, 14, 17, 20, 23, 26. The smallest heat number corresponds to a “hot” candle, largest - “cold” 5 - Position indicates the length of the thread on the spark plug body. For candles with a flat supporting surface, the letter “D” corresponds to a length of 19 mm, the absence of a letter - 12.7 mm 6 - The thermal cone of the insulator can be positioned differently relative to the metal body of the candle. If it protrudes beyond the body, then the letter “B” appears in the designation. If the position is free, then there is no protrusion 7 - The presence of an interference suppression resistor is indicated by the letter “P”. If there is no resistor - position is empty 8 - If the central electrode is made of nickel alloy, then this is not indicated. And if the electrode has a copper core, the letter “M” appears 9 - At the end there may be a serial number of development or modernization. For example, APS and EZ spark plugs in our test were designated A17DVRM. This means that the thread of their housings has a size of M14x1.25 and a length of 19 mm. The heat rating is 17. The thermal cone of the insulator protrudes beyond the spark plug body. A resistor is built into the spark plug, and the central electrode has a copper core. But foreign manufacturers of spark plugs do not adhere to any uniform labeling rules. And their heat scales are different. If our candle becomes “colder” as the number increases, then, say, with Brisk the opposite is true. Therefore, you should select an imported analogue of domestic candles using the catalogs of manufacturers or interchangeability tables. For example, our A17DVRM candles correspond to Beru 14R-7DU, Brisk LR15YC or Champion RN9YC candles. But our test involved another “champion” - RN9YCC4. The second “C” indicates that there is a copper core not only at the central electrode, but also at the side electrode, and the “four” indicates that the gap has been increased to 1.1 millimeters. By the way, what is the situation with the gaps? Those spark plugs that Tolyatti engines are equipped with on the assembly line have such gaps. For classic VAZs this is 0.5 mm, for carburetor front-wheel drive engines it is 0.7 mm, and on spark plugs for injection VAZ engines the gap is set to 1.0 mm.

How to correctly configure the ignition of Izh Planetka 5

It is best to produce and regulate the ignition of the Izh Planetka using a special tool that was once included in the factory kit of each individual model. If you do not have such a tool, use an ordinary caliper.

See:

What will you need to set up the launch system on Izh Planetka 5? The following tools will be useful to you:

To properly install ignition , you first need to remove the cover from the generator. If necessary, for convenience it is possible to unscrew the right cover on the crankcase.

Next, to adjust the ignition of Planet 5, you should alternately perform the following steps:
