But the new manufacturer - interestingly, Russian - did a good job of starting its activities by offering products that have their own merits and are in many ways superior to motorcycles of foreign brands.
What are these advantages, what manufacturer are we talking about and what models of motorcycles does it produce?
Brand history
The Stels brand belongs to the company, founded in Russia in 1996.
It started out selling bicycles, but already in 2003 it built its first plant.
Currently, the company already has three production sites:
- in the Moscow region, Kubinka;
- in Bryansk, Zhukovka;
- in the Krasnodar region, Art. Krylovskaya.
Striving to become a European leader in the production of bicycles (today this goal has been achieved), the holding simultaneously began assembling scooters, and then producing other types of motor vehicles: ATVs, motorcycles, snowmobiles.
In 2013, Velomotors products passed the international certification ISO 9001:2011.

, which began its activities in 1996 with the sale of SJ domestic bicycles, has now expanded so much that it claims to be the largest and most progressive manufacturer of bicycles and motorcycles in Russia.
The number of production capacities continues to increase. In 2008, a bicycle factory in the city of Zhukovka near Bryansk was purchased (previously Desna bicycles were produced here).
It is customary to treat the production of motorcycles in Russia with a fair amount of skepticism. We are leaving for the Bryansk region. Often, pseudo-domestic production facilities look like this: Chinese motorcycles are assembled from ready-made kits as high as a specific model can be, then a Russian label is glued over the difficult-to-pronounce names, and the motorcycle is sent to the counter. Company owners shrug their shoulders, realizing that given the low popularity of motorcycles, this is already a victory.

All dilapidated ancient buildings remaining from the previous bicycle factory were dismantled, their place was taken by modern buildings with the most advanced equipment, built from scratch. It’s nice to walk through hangars that are dry, spacious and warm and don’t have sparrow-sized cockroaches running around! As of the end of 2012, the plant launched the production of bicycles (from the creation of individual parts from sheet metal to final painting and assembly), a motorcycle assembly shop with separate conveyors for assembling motorcycles and ATVs was put into operation, a procurement shop produces a full range of steel parts, Equipment for working with aluminum and plastic is being configured, and equipment for the production of snowmobiles is also prepared for installation. Where possible, production is as robotic as possible; human labor is in most cases used to control and maintain machines and mechanisms. Assembly processes necessarily end with a series of quality control tests - in the case of bicycles, wheel balancing is checked, the overall completeness and quality of painting of parts are checked, ATVs and motorcycles undergo a series of complex tests on a specially designed stand. After which, all the equipment is stored in a huge hangar, awaiting packaging.
Looking at such a concentration of motor vehicles under one roof, you want to stay and live here. The choice of location was not accidental - from the previous plant, in addition to illiquid buildings and equipment, there remained well-trained personnel and infrastructure that had not yet fallen into disrepair. The presence of a railway line entering the plant territory makes it possible to significantly simplify logistics and carry out direct supplies of materials.
The transition from screwdriver assembly to independent production, refusal to purchase materials from abroad in favor of cooperation with domestic suppliers is aimed at reducing the cost of equipment production; according to promises from a plant representative, starting next year, prices for Velomotors products will decrease.
The emergence of a complete set of necessary equipment will naturally bring with it the opportunity to produce a large number of different models of motorcycles, scooters and ATVs, including your own, fortunately, the accumulated experience allows you to do this. Purchases of equipment to form our own design department have already begun. In 2013, it is planned to begin production of snowmobiles and motorcycles with an engine capacity of 600 cm3.
No matter how wonderful plans are, their implementation is usually hampered by a lack of funding. The rear of motorcycle production is reliably covered by bicycles - while the demand for motorcycles in Russia is still small, the necessary financial stability for the development of the motorcycle sector is ensured by high demand for well-proven Stels bicycles (the design capacity of the assembly line in Zhukovka is up to 1 million bicycles per year). This is a rare case when bicycles pull motorcycle production on their hump. I agree, it looks utopian, but the time when people in our country will start to enjoy driving their own equipment may still come.
