In our country, Husqvarna sewing machines are mainly represented by new modern models that can be bought in stores. But sometimes you come across old cars from the Swedish brand Husqvarna, produced only for the European market. And sometimes even the first models with electric drive, produced by this concern in the mid-19th century, are unique.

It is precisely this rare model of sewing machine that this article is devoted to. Its full name is “Husqvarna Practica” Type 40 4010. Made in Sweden. Later, on the basis of this model, other modifications were created, called Viking, and therefore some of the materials in this instruction manual are suitable for them. The possibilities of repairing, setting up and adjusting an old-style Husqvarna sewing machine with your own hands are also briefly discussed.

Traction Husqvarna TC 250

Husqvarna, may Cthulhu preserve her infinite wisdom, realized that riders come in all sizes and have different riding styles, so engineers made the Husqvarna TC 250 engine tunable using a power valve.

The power valve is a movable flap located in the cylinder exhaust port through which the exhaust gases exit. At low speeds, the choke is closed to keep the exhaust port smaller, allowing the engine to produce thrust at low rpm. With increasing speed, the damper gradually opens, increasing the size of the exhaust window and thereby increasing traction at the top.

The ability to adjust the size of the exhaust port allows for a smoother and more comfortable draft from bottom to top.

In the case of the 2022 Husqvarna TC 250, the thrust pattern is changed using the power valve control. The main valve spring can be tensioned or relaxed using a square wrench (Robertson slot) , the socket for which is located in the center of the power valve spring cap. The stiffness of this spring affects the opening moment of the power valve. Do you want a stronger blast? Turn the dial counterclockwise for aggressive lift and maximum traction at the top. Want a softer pull? By rotating the regulator clockwise, you will get smoother traction and a wider range of torquey revolutions, starting from the bottom. There is no need to turn the two bolts securing the cover to the engine (unless the regulator is jammed, of course). Oh, yes, and don’t read the part of the manual that says not to touch the power valve regulator. Of course, that's what a regulator is for, to regulate.

The Mystery of Robertson's Square

What is a Robertson square spline?

That's right, even we don't have such a key or bit. As a last resort, you can use a flat-head screwdriver of a suitable size, the main thing is that it fits tightly into the square diagonally, because the spring cover is made of rather soft bronze, in which the slots can be easily torn off. And if they are torn off, then even the Robertson key from the KTM and Husqvarna options catalog will no longer work. Luckily, there's a manual dial option from Kreft Moto called the Power Dial that lets you manually change the bike's power anywhere (even on the side of a motocross track). First, you should turn the knob completely (counterclockwise), and then turn it half a turn or a full turn and decide whether you need to turn it further.

Colored springs

The 2022 Husqvarna TC 250 comes with a green, yellow and red outer power valve spring. By replacing the spring, you can achieve different opening speeds for the damper in the exhaust window: the red spring provides a sharper opening, and the green spring provides a slower opening. There is a yellow spring in the drain. It is possible to mix it up, but it is difficult: the main spring of a larger diameter determines the moment the damper opens, and the smaller colored spring affects the opening speed and at what speed the damper opens completely.

Most people prefer the stock yellow spring, but we had fun playing around with the regulator. The adjustment, by the way, is very sensitive: we turned the regulator literally 1/8 of a turn, remembering which way we turned it in order to return it if it got worse. Be sure to turn the knob in both directions to make sure the changes are in the right direction. The full range of the Husqvarna power valve adjuster is 6 turns. Having found the ideal position of the regulator for yourself, take the time to mark it with a marker and write down the number of revolutions to it.

Ignition maps

For some unknown reason, the 2022 Husqvarna TC 250 comes equipped with a handlebar-mounted map switch from the factory, while owners of the similar 2022 KTM SX 250 two-stroke are deprived of this feature. Or rather, they have it, but it is achieved by uncoupling one wire. Under the KTM tank there is a white wire with a plastic connector. This is the only white wire under the frame and is therefore easy to identify, so here it is: by disconnecting the connector, we switch the KTM to a “soft” ignition map. By plugging the connector back in, we will return the “aggressive” card. But let's continue about Husk:

The Husqvarna TC 250 is equipped with a two-position switch on the right side of the handlebar (not for all markets, but at least for the US market). Its first position is the “aggressive” card, and the second is the “soft” one. With the soft map turned on, traction will be smoother for a more controlled ride. Most cross-country riders will find it useful on hard or slippery surfaces, as they can easily tear off a wheel. But in general, due to a good explosion on the average, and even with a tuned power valve, a “soft” card can be more useful. However, most people prefer the “aggressive” card - which is in fact stock.

Clutch

The Husqvarna TC 250 is equipped with different clutches from the factory, but all of them have a diaphragm with a Belleville washer (also called a Belleville washer). The Husqvarna FC 350, FC 250 and TC 125/150 are equipped with steel diaphragm (DS) clutches, while the four-stroke Husqvarna FC 450 and two-stroke Husqvarna TC 250 have damped diaphragm steel (DDS).

What is the difference between DDS and DS?

The DDS clutch has six rubber dampers located on the inside of the clutch. These dampers soften the clutch during hard acceleration and quick shifts. Clutches with DS are devoid of dampers, since, according to engineers, the small thrust of small displacement engines does not require additional damping. Moreover, dampers also have a disadvantage: over time they wear out and lead to unpleasantly slurred clutch operation. It is important to replace dampers at least every 40 operating hours.

Airbox

Airbox covers/plastic with improved airflow are available for the Husqvarna FC 250, FC 350 and FC 450, but for some reason they are not available for the Husqvarna two-strokes. This is bad. Moreover, it is incomprehensible: if Husky’s idea of airflow is so different from the generally accepted one, why do they make optional airboxes for four-strokes?

The point is this: the airbox of the Husqvarna TC 250 is so sealed that the engine is frankly suffocating. Don't turn it? Remove the airbox cover and take it for a ride - you will immediately feel the difference. A stifled airbox means the engine revs slower and the thrust builds up weaker and softer than on an identical KTM (even though their two-stroke airbox is also poorly ventilated).

The solution is obvious: drill holes in the airbox (just make sure they are on the right side). But before you drill holes and release additional horses through them, make sure that you definitely need more power. For many riders, the soft low-end thrust provided by the smothered airbox is more than enough.

We know a lot of people who like the traction of the 2022 Husqvarna FC 450 in stock form - and if you, after riding without an airbox cover, realize that you prefer the stock one, put the drill aside. You don't have to drill your new motorcycle just because someone else did it before you.

Electric drive and pedal Husqvarna Practica

This machine has a very reliable and comfortable pedal.

Even if your machine does not work, then keep the pedal, since it can be connected to any other electric machine or overlocker (almost any).

Manufacturers of sewing machines Japanese brands of sewing machines: Janome, Juki, Brothers, Toyota and Jaguar. In addition to Japanese brands of sewing machines, there are many more European manufacturers, American companies, Asian and other countries.

Which sewing machine should I buy? An important criterion when buying a sewing machine is its purpose and ease of use. For example, some models from Juki have a folding table.

The TC 250's engine is surprisingly more manageable than its punchier twin, the KTM SX 250. Its mid-range punch isn't as pronounced as you'd expect from a 250cc two-stroke. The thrust is most pronounced from low to mid-range, and then it deflates quite quickly. When compared side-by-side, the two identical engines exhibit very different personalities: the KTM is peppy and punchier, while the Husk is more weighted and controllable. But both engines do not really pull after 8200 rpm.

The Husqvarna TC 250 sits somewhere between the top-end thrust of the Yamaha YZ250 and the explosive bottom-end of the KTM SX 250. To the engineers' credit, getting two different characters from one two-stroke engine, with the possibility of additional tuning, is a good decision and a good implementation.

In an ideal world, the ideal engine would have the bottom end of a KTM SX 250 and the top end of a Yamaha YZ250. But don't take our desire for an angry top end as a criticism of the Husqvarna TC 250 - it's still a fast two-stroke with the perfect character for those who are intimidated by an orange bike but unimpressed by the sluggish bottom end of a blue one. It also handles amazingly well - all the rider needs to do is achieve balance by setting the appropriate sag and fork height, and the chassis goes on autopilot from there. Steering does not require effort, and the motorcycle does not oversteer, understeer, or wobble. And it doesn't scare me.

Cross-country Husqvarna TC 250 2022. What's wrong?

Airbox. Husqvarna, under the management of KTM, has always equipped its motocross motorcycles with strangled airbox subframes. An engine is essentially a pump that pumps air; it inhales and exhales it, simultaneously producing thrust. And for some reason Husqvarna does not allow as much air into the engine as it could. Fortunately, this is easy to fix.

Knitting needles. They get loose. If you're in a hurry, at least check the one next to the rim lock. If it doesn't wobble, you can go.

Facing. The two-piece side number plates are pretty pointless. Guys, maybe enough strange design solutions? Make them whole (as they were before).

Muffler. A bit long. The Husqvarna TC 250 would be better suited to some FMF or Pro Circuit - more power, less weight.

Frame color. There are a hundred shades of blue - but this one is somehow missed.

Traverse casing. In general, the casing of the lower yoke built into the license plate is not bad. But why does it cover only half of the traverse?

Compression smoothing control. Last year's three-prong adjuster has become a two-prong adjuster this year. Guys, we would like more and longer teeth.

Graphic arts. Are you offering to pay extra for a whole logo on the sides of the radiator?

The main feature of the Husqvarna Practica sewing machine

The main feature of the Husqvarna Practica sewing machine is its connected copiers. This is a rather inconvenient and outdated solution to switching the machine to one line or another. In subsequent models, this design element was replaced with a conventional handle mounted on the front side.

This is what the copiers for the Husqvarna Practica sewing machine look like. You need to insert it into the slot at the back of the machine. Moreover, the machine will execute the stitch whose appearance is indicated on the copier. To select another line, you need to switch the position of the copier line selection regulator or install another copier (A, B, C).

Cross-country Husqvarna TC 250 2022. What's good?

Brakes. Simply excellent.

Clutch. The Husqvarna hydraulic clutch with bevel plate is self-adjusting. We're always wary of the Magura slave cylinder seal, which has had a leaking problem for several years, but Magura seems to have solved that problem.

Air filter. KTM and Husqvarna have the most serviceable airboxes in their entire class.

Hour meter. On the 2022 Husqvarna TC 250 it is integrated into the top crossbar.

Radiator cap. Its valve is designed for 1.8 atmospheres - no match for the frail Japanese with a valve for 1.1 atmospheres.

Power valve regulator. The very fact of its presence is good, and if you also abandon the strange square slot and install an aftermarket, it becomes damn convenient.

Weight. 96 kilograms is half a kilogram heavier than the KTM SX 250 (due to a more solid airbox subframe, presumably), but 3 kg lighter than the Yamaha YZ250 and 13 kilograms lighter than the Suzuki RM-Z450.

Steering wheel. Literally everyone liked Protaper.

Grips. ODI quick releases are more rigid than conventional ones with a glue fit, but the ability to fix a twisted grip without waiting for the glue to dry is worth a lot.

Balancer shaft. The Husqvarna TC 250 is equipped with a counterbalancer that reduces vibration.

Malfunctions and repairs of Husqvarna sewing machines

The “main” part of this model of sewing machine is the belt connecting the upper shaft to the lower shaft. This is a woven textile strap with metal links. Due to age, temperature changes and other factors, it can stretch out and then the machine can no longer be repaired, and it is impossible to buy a new belt.

It is advisable to remove the shuttle stroke, clean and lubricate it. To remove the stroke, you need to remove four screws and remove the square metal frame that holds it in the grooves.
