Honda crf250r 2022. Operation review.

Is the 2022 Honda CRF250R better than the 2022 CRF250R?

A year ago, Honda reinvented the CRF250R, which was in desperate need of an upgrade. The engine did not pull out at low and medium speeds compared to opponents during 2010 - 17.

It was easy for beginners to handle, but in order for it to correspond to the “Pro” level, a lot of money had to be poured into it. Honda hasn't lived up to expectations since 2010. The CRF250R won the MXA series in 2009 and finished fourth in 2010, losing to the Italians' Husquarna TC250. The strange thing is that Honda stayed afloat for eight long years, despite the fact that it lost in all competitions in the four-stroke quarter class. During this time, Honda's sales fell noticeably, amid the growth of brands such as Yamaha and KTM.

Finally, in 2022, Honda engineers received funding to upgrade the CRF250R. It turned out to be a KTM “killer”, but only on paper; in reality it became even worse. Why? The maximum power of the Honda CRF250R was achieved at maximum engine speed and was close to the power of the KTM and Husqvarna, but in fact the power was 3 hp less. less than competitors. The reason for this phenomenon was the artificial reduction of the maximum engine speed from 14,000, where the maximum power was, to 12,000 rpm.

Does the 2022 engine still have the shortcomings of the 2018 engine?

Honda knew the 2022 CRF250R had problems from the start, but went on sale regardless. All the new owners immediately began to say that it drove like an old CR125 two-stroke, and not like a high-revving four-stroke quarter. Sales were good at first, but then clutch baskets began to fail and almost all 2022 Honda CRF250Rs had to be recalled. A very bad year for Honda.

By 2022, Honda needed an engine with better low end, high thrust, extended through the mid-range, and the ability to use maximum power at high speed. But Japanese engine manufacturers put new engines on the production line every four years, and the last update to this engine was just a year ago. But Honda was able to push through some improvements to the 2022 engines.

What changes have the 2022 Honda crf250r engines received?

Honda engineers spent the allocated budget on the following improvements:

  • Cam profile. The engine has camshafts with new cam shapes developed by the HRC 250 Grand Prix racing team, which now close 2 degrees earlier.
  • Collectors. The geometry of the intake and exhaust manifolds has been changed for better cylinder filling.
  • Exhaust pipe. The right exhaust pipe is 50 mm shorter than the left one.
  • Oil nozzle. The nozzle nozzle received five holes instead of four. This allowed for better piston cooling and reduced detonation.
  • Generator. The generator has become lighter and friction losses have decreased.
  • Clutch. Installed a new clutch basket and release spring.
  • Throttle valve. A smaller 44mm Keihin throttle body was installed instead of the previous 46mm.

What about everything else?

Despite the fact that most of the budget for the new Honda CRF250R went to the engine, there was also enough money to upgrade the suspension and chassis. Here is the list of updates:

  • Launch control. Like the 2022 CRF450R, the CRF250R also gets three-mode Launch control.
  • Fork protection. New guards better protect the fork legs.
  • Steering wheel. Instead of a Renthal 7/8 steering wheel, a Renthal Fatbars 1.1/8 steering wheel is installed.
  • Brakes. The front brake caliper has been enlarged and has a 30 mm piston. It works in tandem with a 260mm disc.
  • Traverses. The upper crossbar now has new rudder mounts. They allow you to move the handlebars by 26 mm, including 10 mm back.
  • Engine protection. The skid plate now allows more air to flow through, improving engine cooling.
  • Wheels. DID Dirt Star wheels are black instead of chrome.
  • Footrests. The footpegs are 20% lighter and have a new shape that allows them to be cleared of dirt faster.

Review of the Honda XL600 Transalp motorcycle

The Honda XL600 Transalp belongs to the type of enduro motorcycle that allows for off-road riding.

The officially established fuel consumption figure for the XL 600 transalp is 5.6 l/100 km. The series was produced from 1987 to 1999. Honda XL 600 V includes versions: H, J, K, A, AC, L, M, N, P, R, T, V, W, X.

Comparison with analogues and competitors

Among the models with similar characteristics to the Honda Transalp 600 is the Honda NTV 650. Suitable for driving on city streets and long-distance tourist trips. The NTV motorcycle, like the transalp, is equipped with a two-cylinder liquid-cooled engine. Its comparable technical characteristics:

  • Volume – 647 cm³.
  • Power 60 horsepower.
  • The maximum speed is 165 km/h.
  • Tank capacity – 19 l.

The main competitors of the xl 600 in the enduro motorcycle class are:

  1. Suzuki XF 650 Freewind. The main difference from the transalp is a single-cylinder four-stroke engine with an air-oil cooling system. Volume – 644 cm³, five-speed transmission. The established gasoline consumption rate is 3-4 liters per 100 km, according to reviews - 4-5 liters.
  2. Kawasaki KLE 500. The model was released in 1991, equipped with a two-cylinder four-stroke engine with a displacement of 498 cm³. Liquid cooling. Six-speed gearbox, tank capacity is 15 liters.
  3. Honda Transalp 650. This motorcycle replaced the 600 Transalp and turned into a more modern device.

The advantages of the Honda Transalp 600 series include durability, high level of quality, reliability and ease of maintenance. The same advantages were found in a similar motorcycle from this company - Steed 600.

Disadvantages include possible difficulties in finding spare parts and cracks in the area where the frame is attached to the radiator.

Reviews from Honda XL600 Transalp owners

According to owner reviews, the Transalp 600 model is suitable for any trip: around the city, in nature, very long distances. The advantages, according to users, are good aerodynamic properties on the highway, a high and comfortable seating position that provides good visibility, high-quality plastic cladding, and a respectable appearance. Among the disadvantages, owners note rather weak brakes, normal dynamics, and also that the motorcycle is a little wide, which sometimes creates difficulties when moving in traffic jams.

Additionally, some users install:

  • cigarette lighter;
  • heated handles;
  • anterior arches;
  • center stand;
  • fog lights;
  • pillow on the central trunk;
  • automatic chain lubricator.

According to reviews, it is necessary to periodically replace the following elements:

  • air filter (after approximately 10,000 km);
  • brake pads (approximately 25,000 km, depending on driving style);
  • battery (once every 2-3 years);
  • chain, oil, seals.

It is worth emphasizing that sometimes problems may arise with finding the right spare parts for motorcycles in this series.

Thus, production and sales of the model begin in 1987. Further:

  • versions are produced without significant changes in 1988, 1990, 1992-1993, 1998.
  • 1989 - the rear suspension design of the transalp 600 is changed.
  • 1991 - The drum brake is replaced with a rear disc brake, and the external oil supply is removed.
  • 1994 - an updated headlight appears, and it becomes possible to adjust the front brake lever.
  • 1996 - the spring is replaced with a longer one, instead of two ignition coils, one is installed.
  • 1997 - the model is produced only in Italy, the version is equipped with a double-disc front brake instead of a single-disc one, and handles designed for passengers are installed.
  • 1999 - Honda XL 600 is discontinued, replaced by the Honda 650 Transalp, and then the Honda Transalp 700 with improved technical characteristics.

Technical characteristics of Honda XL600 Transalp

The version is characterized by the presence of a four-stroke V-twin engine with two cylinders and a liquid cooling system.

The 2022 Honda crf250r engine has become more powerful

How did the 2022 engine perform on the dyno?

The 2022 Honda CRF250R engine produces 2 more horsepower. more in the range of 8000-10000 rpm and by 1-2 hp. in the range of 10000-11200 rpm compared to the 2022 engine. As a result, it produces 42.40 hp. versus 40.68 hp engine 2022. In general, the 2019 engine is more powerful than the 2022 engine across the entire rpm range.

Is the Honda CRF250R better than the competition on the dyno?

Good news. Maximum power of Honda is 0.3 hp more than KTM and Husqvarna. Next comes the YZ250F, and the power of the KX250 and RM-Z250 is generally around 39 hp. Honda beats everyone in the range of 10000-12200 rpm by 1.5 hp.

Bad news. Despite the fact that the engine has gained 2 hp, it is still weaker than its competitors at medium speeds. Namely, by 4 hp. weaker than the KX250 at 7000 rpm, by 2 hp. weaker than the YZ250F by 8000 rpm and 1.5 hp. weaker than the KTM 250SXF at 9000 rpm. Honda starts to pull only from 10,000 rpm.

How did the Honda CRF250R engine perform on the track?

Please note that the 2022 engine is more powerful than the 2018 engine. It responds quicker to the throttle and pulls well at the top. The power curve is the same as the 2022 engine, but higher throughout the rev range. Taking this into account, it is difficult to understand what the owners are complaining about, but they are complaining.

The engine has weak low end and the 2019 Honda CRF250R pulls weakly out of corners. In corners, all competitors beat it. A smooth increase in power is not what the owners of a four-stroke “four” expect - they want an instant pickup from the bottom. The lack of traction at the bottom spoils the whole picture. Many CRF250R owners were disappointed with the 2019 model, just like they were with last year's Honda release.

What can be done to increase traction at low and medium speeds?

Nothing. Although some change the drive stars - instead of 13/48 they put 13/49, which gives a little more traction. You can also do some tuning yourself, but it costs money.

Review of Honda XL600V (1998)

I’ll tell you very briefly about my third motorcycle – the Honda TransAlp 600.

The mileage at the moment is about 43 thousand according to instruments (in reality it is about 47,000, the speedometer drive gear was changed, so the speedometer is missing about 4000 km (it died on the road). Of these, 25,000 are mine. The first owner is in Russia, the motorcycle is from Germany. Two sets of keys , original manual in a pocket on the back of the plastic, original tools.

This motorcycle can rightfully be called a successful compromise of a motorcycle for every day. And to work in traffic jams, and in the evening to go for a ride with a girl, and to rush to a long distance. For example, in May I rode the following route: Voronezh-Volgograd-Rostov-on-Don-Odessa-Kyiv-Brest-Minsk-Moscow. And I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. By the way, it’s realistic to walk 1000 km a day.

Cruising speed is 120-130, up to 140 it goes very briskly. There is still a margin for overtaking, but I don’t think any more is needed. The engine is V-shaped, “only” 50 hp, but we must not forget that these are Honda horses that run from the very bottom with amazing torque! Driving in the city is not annoying. You sit high, you can see far away. A little wide in the mirrors, but you are taller than sedans, there is a risk of catching a Gazelle or SUV.

On speed bumps, you can simply stand on the pegs and drive on! In general, roads are no longer needed, only directions! You drive confidently and therefore you are not in a hurry on the transalp, nothing bothers you, the cars themselves are afraid of you, that’s what I noted, they give in without question, apparently they are afraid of endurists))

What investments are required, on average:

  • new front and rear tires Sahara 3 (about 9000-10000 rubles), enough for about 12000 km.
  • new chain/sprockets (about 8000-9000 rubles), enough for about 15-17000 km.
  • changing Castrol Act Evo 10W-40 oil + HF303 filter (approximately 2500 rubles) every 8000 km
  • replacing the HFA1705 air filter (RUB 1,000) every 10,000 km.
  • changing the oil in the fork + oil seals (also about 3000 rubles) once a season
  • rear and front brake pads (about 4,500 rubles), enough for about 22-25,000 km.
  • a new Yuasa battery (3000 rubles) usually lasts for two to three years.

Among the extras specifically installed on mine were: front arches, rear frames for panniers, large glass, a central stand, 3 hepco and becker panniers (central TOP-CASE *JOURNEY 50* 48L - 144.95 euros and side “JUNIOR FLASH” 30 and 40L costing 379.00 and 389.00 euros respectively), heated grips, cigarette lighter, Scottoiler chain oiler, passenger airbag on the central trunk, Hella fog lights, etc.

Something like this:) If you have questions, ask. Good luck and success to everyone. Take care of yourself!

Chassis and suspension

What can you say about the frame?

The 2022 Honda CRF250R has excellent geometry, just like the 2018 model. The motorcycle is comfortable to sit on. They've also added more handlebar adjustments to help taller riders fit more comfortably on the bike.

In flight, the Honda CRF250R feels like a very light motorcycle. Many felt it was the lightest in its class. But upon weighing it turned out that this was far from true. The CRF250R weighs 103.4 kg dry, which is 4.5 kg heavier than the 2019 KTM 250SXF and 2.3 kg heavier than the 2022 KTM 450SXF.

What about the fork?

After much experimentation with forks, Honda returned to conventional forks with springs. These are good forks. They may be a bit stiff for light riders, but they are easy to adjust to suit any rider.

Pros of the Honda CRF250R

  • Controllability. The motorcycle is comfortable and easy to control.
  • Fork. Showa spring forks are suitable for riders of any size.
  • Tires. Excellent Dunlop MX3S tires front and rear.
  • Settings. A good package of three standard engine settings.
  • Clutch. Reliable and easy to operate clutch.
  • Front brake. A larger front caliper improves braking.
