How to properly install a piston on a chainsaw

The work of replacing the piston for most models of modern chainsaws is carried out according to the following algorithm:

  1. The top and side covers are removed.
  2. The candle is unscrewed.
  3. The stoppers are removed from the shock absorbers and the handle is disconnected from the body.
  4. The drive sprocket and starter are removed.
  5. A piston stopper is installed in the spark plug hole and the nut securing the flywheel and clutch is unscrewed.
  6. The flywheel, clutch, and worm drive of the oil pump, located immediately behind the clutch mechanism, are removed.
  7. The screws securing the carburetor and air filter are unscrewed, after which these components are removed along with the engine control lever.
  8. The ignition coil is removed, as well as the muffler.
  9. The saw is turned upside down and, by unscrewing the screws securing it to the body, the engine is disconnected.
  10. The pan is unscrewed and the piston is removed.
  11. Since the piston is removed only together with the crankshaft, to disconnect it it is necessary to remove the retaining rings.
  12. The old piston is replaced with a new one, but as carefully as possible. This is caused by the high fragility of compression rings.
  13. The crankcase is put in place, and sealant is used instead of a gasket.

All subsequent actions are carried out according to the reverse algorithm of disassembly.

Features of piston group selection

When selecting a new piston or piston-cylinder pair, be sure to pay attention to the correspondence of their markings. Each motorcycle model has from two to four piston size groups

Their diameter can vary from 0.01 to 0.025 mm.

The group marking is usually applied in the form of a stamp on the piston bottom and the lower end of the cylinder. Make sure these numbers match.

The cylinder must be bored before installing the piston. If the piston has sharp internal corners left after machining or due to casting defects, they must be rounded with a file and polished.

To position the piston correctly, follow the arrow stamped on the bottom of the part. If it is missing or not visible, position the piston in the same way as the locking pins: they should “look” at the vertical sectors of the liner without windows.

Causes of piston chainsaw problems

There are many reasons for failure of the CPG, which are usually divided into two main categories: natural wear and artificial failures. The first type of problem, as the name suggests, involves physical wear of the rubbing parts of the piston group. The second category is more extensive and implies:

  • severe overheating of the internal combustion engine and, as a result, the appearance of thermal scoring on the surface of the piston;
  • breakage of the lower part of the piston (skirt) due to the duration of operation of the chainsaw at maximum speed;
  • foreign particles entering the combustion chamber and causing mechanical damage to the CPG;
  • breakage of the compression (piston) ring due to severe wear or exceeding the permissible speed of the saw;
  • discrepancy between the recommended portions of gasoline and oil when preparing the fuel mixture.

Experts do not recommend disassembling the CPG without special reasons. However, if the tool has significantly lost power, there is a metallic ringing in the internal combustion engine, or the crankshaft does not turn when the starter jerks, the piston chainsaw should be diagnosed. First of all, to identify engine problems, it is necessary to measure the compression in the cylinder. If there is a significant deviation from the values ​​recommended by the manufacturer, we can safely say that there are scratches, wear, or scuffing on the surface of the cylinder or piston. It is the drop in compression that is the basis for complete disassembly and repair of the piston group of the chainsaw.

To quickly diagnose the CPG for a broken chainsaw compression ring or scoring in the cylinder, professionals advise removing the muffler and assessing their condition through the exhaust window.

Usage

In order to recognize breakdowns and correct them, it is important to understand how everything works in a normal situation. For simplicity, we will focus only on models with a gasoline engine. Previously, there were two-stroke walk-behind tractors, but at the moment they are increasingly being replaced by four-stroke analogues. Diesel devices are also gaining popularity. As for the box, it can be made in 3 different versions.

  • a device that keeps the number of revolutions under control;
  • a rod connecting this device to the throttle valve;
  • spring.

The control unit operates on the basis of a pneumatic or mechanical connection. “Pneumatic” means having a typical wing that matches the speed of air flow. Centrifugal options involve placing a special camshaft inside the crankcase. It is complemented by small weights and the barrel simply moves. The train is made of wire, and the sensitivity of the spring determines how accurately the speed will be maintained.

The role of the gas dispersion mechanism is to supply a mixture of fuel and air into the cylinder. But the same device also ensures the removal of exhaust gases. A decompressor is used to influence the compression ratio. Gasoline engines are certainly equipped with carburetors, which are responsible for producing a fuel-air mixture. Regardless of the type of fuel, the starting device plays an important role.
