The carburetor is leaking: what to do and how to fix the problem?

Sometimes, having arrived at the store on his motorcycle or simply left it on the street for half an hour, upon returning the owner notices a puddle of gasoline under his faithful horse. Besides the obvious loss of gasoline, this problem can turn into a serious problem if a passer-by carelessly throws a cigarette butt in the direction of your motorcycle. In a car equipped with a carburetor engine, a gasoline leak is especially dangerous, since it is not so easy to notice, and a sudden fire under the hood can occur.

Idle settings are off

Often, manufacturers of scooters, motorcycles and other inexpensive equipment recommend that owners independently adjust the carburetor by adjusting it with the idle speed screw.

As a result of the screw being fully tightened, the carburetor ejects fuel and it flows into the air filter.

Adjusting the carburetor will completely eliminate the problem.

Lack of air causes operation on a rich mixture, which leads to unstable engine speed. This malfunction can also be diagnosed by the condition of the spark plugs.

Preventing Breakage

The sudden appearance of gasoline in the filter after visiting a gas station indicates dirty fuel. You should stop visiting unverified stations. It is also not recommended to buy fuel while replenishing the storage tank, as the flow from the fuel truck pipe lifts all the debris from the bottom of the tank.

When performing adjustment work, you should mark the positions of the mixture quality and quantity screws. To do this, you need to tighten the bolt completely, counting the revolutions. In case of subsequent unsuccessful setup, knowing the preset value, it will be much easier to return to the original state.

Driving should be as careful as possible. Any drop of the scooter may cause damage to the fuel system. Also, rust that comes off due to dynamic load can fix the locking needle, preventing it from taking the required position.

Whatever the reason for the appearance of gasoline in the filter, you should not delay troubleshooting. Operating the engine in such conditions leads to excessive wear of all parts, which increases the need for major repairs. A quick response to the first symptoms of malfunction of the fuel system will save the owner’s wallet from unnecessary waste.

Most common faults

If you arrange the possible malfunctions of a gas generator in a kind of rating, you will get the following list:

  • Failure or contamination of the spark plug: difficult or impossible starting, unstable operation.
  • Carburetor clogged: difficult starting, excessive fuel consumption, unstable operation under constant load.
  • Ignition coil failure: no spark, unable to start.
  • Starter breakdowns: breakage, cable snagging, ratchet destruction.
  • Violation of valve clearances: difficult starting, increased noise during operation.
  • Brush wear (on synchronous generators) – lack of output voltage.
  • Faulty speed controller: floating engine speed, dips when the load changes.
  • Wear of the crankshaft bearings and generator rotor - increased operating noise and oil leakage.
  • Wear of the cylinder, piston rings - difficulty starting a cold engine, excessive oil consumption.

This does not take into account breakdowns that result from a gross violation of the operating rules of the generator: for example, scuffing on the crankshaft journal due to insufficient oil level, burnout of the windings of the generator or voltage converter (on inverter gas generators) due to frequent overloads.

In fact, gasoline generator faults can be divided into three groups: mechanical, electrical and fuel/ignition system faults .

Malfunctions in the operation of power and ignition systems and their maintenance

Difficulty starting the generator, which appears suddenly and is not accompanied by an increase in engine noise, is a clear sign of either abnormalities in the carburetor (too lean or rich mixture) or a faulty ignition system (weak or intermittent spark formation). Since the diagnostics of the state of these systems is interconnected, it is combined into one section.

Remove the spark plug and inspect the carbon deposits on its electrodes.

Carburetor petals and fuel return

When the piston moves from bottom dead center, fuel initially rushes back into the carburetor. On high-speed engines, most often used on motorcycles, a reed valve is used to prevent the air-gasoline mixture from escaping. Valves are:

  • metal, characterized by low reliability;
  • carbon, expensive, but rarely fail.

Garage craftsmen advise bending the valve petals if it fails. Practice shows that this is only a temporary measure and repairs with replacement of petals are not far off.

Diagnosis is performed by visual inspection. The presence of burnouts or thermal damage or twists indicates the need to purchase a new reed valve.

Despite the unexpected appearance of fuel in the air filter and the inability to start the engine, during operation you should listen to your bike, scooter, or car. Minor malfunctions in engine operation should alert the owner so that in the future he does not see the air filter pouring gasoline onto the ground.

Cleaning the lock needle

This reason is one of the most common why the carburetor on an Alpha moped leaks. You can try to clean the locking needle without disassembling the unit. The fuel valve is closed and the drain bolt is unscrewed. Gasoline is drained from the tank by opening the tap again. At this moment, you need to lightly tap the float chamber. If the blockage is severe, you will have to disassemble the carburetor:

  • The moped is installed so that the front wheel points upward.
  • The cover at the bottom of the chamber is removed.
  • The overflow hose is removed and the screws are unscrewed.
  • The rod is taken out.
  • The locking needle is removed from its seat.
  • The fuel channel is flushed with gasoline.

The float touches the chamber walls

This is another popular reason. Nail Poroshin, in his numerous videos on setting up carburetors, always shows how to do it. Not everyone watches these videos and when adjusting the floats they do not pay attention to their position relative to the walls in the chamber. If adjusted incorrectly, the float will touch the walls of the chamber, and as a result, overflow.

Check the position of the floats as follows. You need to unscrew the screws on the cover and remove the cover. Then they look at how the floats are located. There is a gasket installed on the lid, and impressions of the walls are visible on it. The floats must be installed in such a way that there is a distance between them and the chamber wall. This can be seen from the print. It is also worth checking whether the float moves easily on the axis.

What the statistics say

It is enough to turn to the experience of hundreds of owners of gas generators to draw a laconic conclusion: the most popular time of year for power supply engines breaking down is winter time. The point here is not at all about signs, but about the most ordinary natural factors in the form of dirt, snow and low air temperature, which reign supreme on the street during the winter season. The last factor is especially noticeable if your generator is powered by a four-stroke engine. Due to the fact that the oil in such engines is supplied separately from gasoline, it tends to freeze at sub-zero temperatures. Therefore, if you find yourself with such a device in the above conditions, be sure to bring the device into a warm room or warm up the gas tap in some other way. Do not under any circumstances use open fire (do not place it near a fire) for these purposes, preferring an ordinary hairdryer.

In circumstances where the weather conditions do not cause any suspicion, but the power source still stubbornly refuses to work, you should pay attention to the following possible sources of the problem.

Needle valve

This mechanism, or simply a needle, is designed to maintain a certain level of liquid in the chamber. The valve is installed in the carb body and cuts into it using a threaded connection. It locks and unlocks the hole through which gasoline is injected into the chamber.

Needle valve

In some cases, when using low-quality fuel or when there is an increased level of contamination inside the fuel tank, deposits accumulate in the needle valve. The sticky mass prevents the needle from closing normally, causing the valve to constantly remain open. In such cases, it is recommended to replace the needle valve immediately.

Repair it yourself or send it to a service center

Most of the malfunctions of gasoline chain saws can be fixed with your own hands. True, this requires an understanding of the structure of the chainsaw and how the components function among themselves. As for the tools, the most often needed are:

  • screwdrivers (slotted and power);
  • combination wrench included in the kit or regular wrenches with heads of various sizes.

It is worth understanding that not every problem can be solved on your own. Not every chainsaw owner has a compression gauge at home or a special device that allows you to create a vacuum and the required pressure, for example, to check the crankcase for leaks. In this case, you simply cannot avoid contacting specialized specialists.

Quite often, such a malfunction as leaking gasoline is observed in a Chinese chainsaw with a volume of 38 cubic meters.

Gasoline generator does not start: reasons?

Often it comes down to the simplest things that can be solved on the spot.

Let's look at 10 possible reasons why the generator won't start and figure out how to deal with them.

First of all, make sure you have fuel. Oddly enough, this is often the reason that the generator does not start.

If you have been using the generator for a very long time (for example, it “spent the winter” idle at the dacha), and the fuel was not drained before, then it is simply necessary to change the gasoline.

3. Old motor oil or insufficient level.

Many people think that the oil is left over from “last year.” But checking the generator oil is a mandatory procedure before starting work. The protection sensor is triggered and prevents the engine from starting without oil.

Gaskets

Through the cracks in the gaskets, due to the vacuum, fuel can be sucked in, thereby greatly enriching the combustible mixture. It is necessary to carefully visually check the condition of the gaskets and replace if necessary.

The gasket between the bottom of the carburetor and the manifold may also be worn out. On Ozones, experts recommend checking the gaskets between the housing and the throttle valves.

How to drain gasoline from the carburetor of a gas generator?

To drain the fuel, you need to close the fuel valve, remove the hose from the outlet, place an empty container and drain the gasoline by opening the valve. After the gasoline has been drained, it is necessary to unscrew the sump of the fuel tap to completely remove the gasoline, and at the same time, any dirt from the filter mesh of the tap.
