In the good old days, a dual-sport, or dual-purpose motorcycle, was a city vehicle with off-road capabilities. The first representatives of this class were scramblers, which became the ancestors of modern touring enduros with all their panniers, large wheels, suspension travel and a bunch of electronics. At the same time, the scramblers themselves are essentially classics, modified for off-road driving.

Modifications
Buyers are offered 5 variants of the BMW R Nine T, with some differences in design and equipment:
- Standard. There are no frills here.
- BMW R Nine T Scrambler. It features a simpler dashboard, cast rather than spoked wheels, and a 1-liter smaller tank. The radial calipers were replaced with standard ones, and the fork was replaced by a “telescope”. The exhaust pipes received a different design, the torque became slightly less (minus 3 N*m).
- BMW R Nine T Pure. It differs from the previous version in a different wheel diameter and exhaust system pipes (two in one). The BMW Nine T Pure does not have any fork crimps.
- BMW R Nine T Racer. When compared with Pure, a different color is noticeable, the usual “tidy”. The steering wheel is replaced by clip-ons, and there is a fairing on the front end. The exterior of the BMW R Nine T Racer is reminiscent of the rally cars of the past.
- BMW R Nine T Urban G/s. Reminiscent of the Scrambler, but painted differently and has a high front fender. The BMW R Nine T Urban G/s has a single exhaust pipe.
The BMW R Nine T engine, suspension, transmission, chassis and brakes are identical for all modifications.
BMW R Nine T modifications
- Standard. Everything written above applies to it.
- Scrambler. Alloy wheels with a larger radius instead of spoked ones, a different seat, a simplified instrument panel, a 1-liter smaller gas tank. Conventional brake calipers are also installed at the front instead of radial ones, and the fork was replaced with a regular 43-mm “telescope”. The exhaust pipes also received a new design, and the torque decreased slightly - by 3 Nm.
- Pure. Completely similar to the Scrambler, but the wheel diameter corresponds to that of the BMW R Nine T, and the exhaust is made according to the “2-in-1” principle. There are also no protective corrugations on the fork.
- Racer. Similar to the previous one, but differs in original coloring, instrument panel from the standard model, clip-ons instead of a steering wheel and the presence of a front fairing. The appearance of this modification imitates racing motorcycles of the 60s of the last century.
BMW Nine T: simplicity and reliability
It refers to motorcycles that became popular closer to the second half of the last century. At first it was a vehicle designed for movement in urban environments, the main features of which were lightness and maneuverability. Bavarian engineers decided to rearrange the classics and presented the BMW Nine T to the public. Many call it a neo-scrambler. Interestingly, it was this type of bike that became the prototype of modern universal motorcycles, capable of moving both on asphalt and off-road. Today the Bavarians produce several modifications of this equipment, differing in the amount of equipment. For example, the BMW R Nine T Racer is one option. However, the motorcycle is distinguished by its relative simplicity of design, which many consider a plus, since most modern bikes are overly stuffed with electronics, which does not always inspire admiration among motorcycle fans.
BMW R nineT. Personalization
The BMW R nineT is powered by a four-stroke, two-cylinder, oil-air-cooled boxer engine. Instruments - speedometer and tachometer - made in retro style, emphasize the ascetic and swift appearance of the motorcycle. The integrated multifunction display provides all the necessary information. The BMW R nineT is equipped with an inverted telescopic fork at the front and BMW Motorrad Paralever suspension at the rear. But the new motorcycle stands out not only for its minimalistic retro design. It provides ample opportunities to be not just individual, but unique. Any wish will be fulfilled. Examples include a removable rear frame, the ability to install 6-inch wheels and much more. Even so, the BMW R nineT is, from a technical point of view, a genuine BMW motorcycle. The ABS system, included as standard, guarantees a high level of safety.
Transmission and brakes BMW Nine T Urban G/S
The box has 6 gears, torque goes to the rear wheel through the cardan. The fork is taken from the S1000PR sports motorcycle, which is a “telescope”, but inverted. Behind on the left is the Paralever pendulum, which has proven itself well for a long time.
All modifications (equipment does not matter) are equipped with an ABS system. The brakes are similar to those on the R line of bikes. They are a 320 mm disc with a radial caliper (4 pistons) at the front and 265 mm at the rear (2 pistons). The decision to equip a motorcycle with ABS is quite logical: the bike stops too abruptly.
Pros and cons of the BMW R Nine T
Advantages
- Crazy acceleration dynamics. The bike picks up speed breathtakingly quickly.
- Great brakes with ABS.
- Stylish appearance. It is, of course, designed for a certain category of motorcyclists who gravitate toward retro bikes, but one cannot help but admit that the design of the R Nine T really came out great.
- A large number of additional options offered by dealers: heated grips, ESA, several engine operating modes controlled by a button on the remote control, tire pressure sensors, electronically adjustable suspension and much more.
- Subjective ease. The BMW R Nine Ti weighs about 220 kg, but thanks to the boxer engine, which significantly lowers the center of mass, the motorcycle subjectively does not seem heavy at all.
- High quality build and all components. There are no complaints here at all - it's BMW!
Flaws
- High price. Maintaining a motorcycle is also not very cheap, so you should soberly assess your financial capabilities before purchasing.
- Decent fuel consumption. At 130 km/h, according to reviews from BMW R Nine T owners, over a hundred kilometers the bike consumes 6 liters of gasoline or more.
- Lack of wind protection (except for the Racer modification, where, however, it is still not very effective).
- Rigidity. Of course, you have to pay for style, but sporty stiff suspension and an equally hard seat do not add comfort.
- Uncomfortable passenger seat. It seems to be there, but it is of little use - if you go somewhere far away, then after a hundred kilometers the passenger will run away and walk home, just to avoid getting back on.

Scramblers are far from the most popular class of motorcycles, so there are practically no production models that could at least be classified in this class. Such bikes are usually made by hand by customizers, and the donors among craftsmen can be very different. However, several motorcycles still perform on the same field with the BMW R Nine T:
- Ducati Scrambler. The only thing it has in common with its Bavarian competitor is its claim to belong to the class of scramblers. It looks no less stylish, but, inferior to the R Nine T in terms of technical characteristics, the Ducati Scrambler costs much less. Although still, of course, a lot.
- Ducati Scrambler 1100 Sport. Externally and structurally it is very similar to its younger brother, but in terms of characteristics it can compete with BMW. It costs about the same.
- Triumph Bonneville T120. English dude, a real dandy. The price tag is not at all humane. In terms of characteristics, it is quite capable of competing with the Bavarian, but structurally the Englishman is much simpler. Maximum of good old hardware, minimum of electronic bells and whistles.

BMW R Nine T
- a classic with a modern twist. The motorcycle is powered by a boxer engine with a volume of almost 1.2 liters - 1170 cc. see, to be precise. It must be said that this motor, despite the fact that the history of its development dates back to the first quarter of the 20th century, has been brought up to the modern level and is capable of accelerating a motorcycle from 0 to 100 km/h in just three point six seconds. According to the official statement from BMW, of course. The power of the boxer engine is 110 hp, and the maximum torque of 119 nM is achieved at around six thousand revolutions per minute.
The front fork of the BMW R Nine T was borrowed from a brother from the neighboring model range, namely, from the BMW S1000RR sportbike. The Nine T's braking system is nothing short of praiseworthy - the four pistons per caliper combined with 320mm discs set the bike up very effectively, even at high speeds, and the floating design of the brake discs makes braking more predictable. In addition, the BMW R Nine T is also equipped with an ABS system, which adds confidence, especially when driving in wet or cold weather, when the rubber “tans” and holds the asphalt worse. Of course, you shouldn’t rely entirely on electronics, but one day it can save its owner, if not his life, then certainly his health.
The engine starts, and the motorcycle begins to rumble pleasantly with its dual muffler. The BMW boxer engine transmits light, pleasant vibrations to the steering wheel. They are not annoying at all, and they are just right so that you do not forget that you are riding a powerful motorcycle. The gearbox works perfectly, traditionally for BMW. As soon as you release the clutch handle and lightly touch the gas handle, the Nine T confidently moves away. Even when you're idling, you feel how much power is hidden somewhere and waiting in the wings. But this motorcycle, despite its perky character, does not provoke hooliganism. It’s simply a pleasure to drive it and enjoy the calibrated and refined work of all its components.
The modular design system of the motorcycle deserves special mention. This system is now very popular with various major automakers, and BMW decided to use it on its new motorcycle, and not without success, I must admit.
This means that the BMW R Nine T is easy to tune. They removed one part and replaced it with another, specially designed by the manufacturer. The tuning catalog for the BMW R Nine T is huge and probably contains everything you can think of. Want a plug instead of the passenger seat? Easily. Want to add a café racer style fairing? Please. Other handlebars, mirrors, footrests, mufflers? There is everything your soul desires, just have time to fork out the cash. However, BMW has always been a prestigious brand, so the prices for tuning are not particularly humane.

Heritage range
BMW R nineT
This motorcycle is difficult to confuse with other machines, as well as with the progenitor of the entire line. Conceived and created as a pure roadster. The perfect companion to experience freedom and drive on twisty roads. The powerful engine, excellent brakes and expressive character are captivating, so the popularity of this car is not surprising. The motorcycle is characterized by a simplified style and impeccable appearance at the same time. It embodies engineering consistency. Boxer engine, shaft drive, balanced proportions and innovation - advanced ABS and integrated traction control.
The car's developers assumed in advance that the R nineT would be rebuilt and adapted to the owner. Therefore, they took care of the appropriate opportunities for this. They created a modular design and a frame whose rear section can be easily removed. The open electronic interface allows the installation of additional elements.
BMW R nineT Pure
This is a more severe version - R nineT. A good choice for those who love classic style and want to have a real motorcycle.
.
The design refers to the aesthetics of the 70s and 80s, but not only. It also dates back to 1923, when the concept of a boxer-powered car was born. Like the R nineT, the R nineT Pure offers a wide range of personalization options. Features of the Pure version include, in addition to the Catalano Gray paint job, new telescopic forks and five-spoke alloy wheels.
BMW R nine T Scrambler
Combines a classic line with the features of a real scrambler. Works well both in a crowded city and on winding country roads or on a sandy beach. The powerful engine and high-mounted exhaust provide not only great looks, but also powerful acceleration combined with a unique sound. The comfortable driving position means that even long trips are not a problem for this car.
The R nineT Scrambler recalls the days of the legendary, original scramblers and has all the features of this model. There are lugged forks protected by a rubber accordion, a tall exhaust system, taller handlebars and a 19-inch front wheel. Cross-spoke wheels with off-road tires are also available as an option. They send a clear message that the ride is not limited to asphalt.
The stylish saddle, speedometer with analogue display, refined details and round headlight with BMW logo are the perfect complement to the classic look.
BMW R nineT Racer
This model is a car for people who are passionate about street racing. The R nineT Racer takes you back to the days when rocker cars raced on the streets.
Unlike the laid-back Scrambler, the R nineT's retro styling keeps the rider on his toes. Behind the stylish windshield, with his hands resting on the low-slung steering wheel, he can make the most of the engine and chassis.
The nineT is difficult to mistake for any other vehicle. He is characterized by elongated proportions and a slender figure. This is due to the special position of the deflector, fuel tank and seat. The forward-mounted, low-mounted clips and high-mounted rear footpegs force the rider into an active, sporty stance. The picture is completed by a black-painted engine and contrasting paintwork with characteristic BMW Motorsport stripes.
BMW R Nineta Urban G/S
The design of the R nineT Urban G/S is striking and screams that it belongs to the legendary R 80 G/S series that took part in the Paris-Dakar rally 40 years ago. Distinctive features such as the 19-inch front wheel, forks with the familiar accordion lugs, raised fender and a small fairing that hides the round headlight make it look like a roadster, but a rugged adventure machine. The narrow, slightly longer, red seat matches the climate, and the black engine and frame highlight the effect.
It's easy to imagine that the Urban G/S handles rough surfaces well, from gravel roads to dirt roads. And while it's not an off-road machine, it does come with spoked wheels and off-road tires, enduro running boards and an engine cover. This allows you to race on rough terrain.
Well-thought-out ergonomics make the R nineT Urban G/S stand out from the rest. The taller handlebar, long seat and wide footpegs create a more relaxed riding position. This makes travel even more fun.
Although RnineT Urban G/S is strongly associated with the past, modern technology is not alien to it. It is equipped with the engine and electronics of the R nineT model and complies with the EU-4 standard. It has ABS and optional traction control, and the brushed steel raised exhaust system makes the engine feel more pleasing to the ears.
