In 1985, the production of a new model of motorcycles, Izh Jupiter-5K and Izh Jupiter-5, began. When the designers developed this model, they tried to take into account as much as possible the comments of the owners of “Jupiters” of the previous generation (fourth).
Basically, all comments referred to poor electrical equipment, as well as the efficiency of the device. Izh Jupiter-5 is one of the most popular motorcycles of the USSR, and was produced from 1987 to 2008 in Izhevsk. Has a fair amount of resources. Reliable, well assembled. It was created as a middle-class motorcycle. Intended for any road surfaces and no surfaces at all. Because of this, it gained great popularity among residents of rural areas. This technique also has high maneuverability and acceptable dimensions. In addition, this one turned out to be economical and unpretentious.
Izh-Jupiter-5 was produced together with Izh-Planet 5 and competed with it. These two motorcycles are almost identical. They differed only in engines. “Jupiter” was equipped with a 2-cylinder engine, and “Planets” with only one. Due to this, the first device had more power.
Technical characteristics of Izh Jupiter - 5
- Motorcycle weight – 160 kg
- The engine is two-stroke.
- Two cylinders with a volume of 347 cc.
- Cooling - air
- The lubrication system works together with the fuel system. That is, the oil is diluted in gasoline.
- The maximum speed is not much - only 120 km/h.
- Fuel consumption is 4-5 liters per 100 km. This is stated in the technical data sheet. It is impossible to indicate exactly, because the indicator will be different for each type of road. Gasoline is also used - A-76, mixed with oil in a ratio of 25:1.
- The maximum weight a motorcycle can support without a sidecar is 145 kg.
- The gearbox is four-speed. The drive to the rear wheel is a chain.
- Clutch type - multi-disc, permanently closed, in an oil bath.
- Front and rear drum brakes.
It is worth noting that over the entire 20 years that this motorcycle was built, its concept remained unchanged. With each model, these motorcycles became, if not much, but still better than the previous one, and Jupiter-5 was no exception.
If you compare Jupiter-5 with Jupiter-4, then both were practically no different from each other in appearance, but still a couple of details were changed: the torque was increased, the power was slightly decreased. This “little” is 4 horsepower. The fourth model had 28, and the fifth 24 horsepower.
But he won in strength! In terms of design, the shape of the cylinder fins has changed. Other exhaust pipes have been installed. There were also a couple of modifications to this model - cargo and tourist. The first modification was equipped with a side trailer and a spare wheel. The second - a luxury version, did not have a stroller, but it was equipped with a fairing and leg arches.
Find of the year: The IZH Jupiter motorcycle with a sidecar stood in the garage for 35 years, never going out on the highway
Something interesting is happening with IZH Jupiter motorcycles. Various models of this series are found in garages completely untouched with enviable regularity. Several times in our country such motorcycles were found right in the factory box. This particular device was found in the Poltava region, in the city of Kremenchug.
So, IZH Jupiter-4, manufactured in 1982, turquoise. According to the last owner, the car is completely new and has never been started. The speedometer of the IZH shows a mileage of 31 kilometers. Most likely, it appeared during factory calibration of the motors.
Some liquid was found in the motorcycle tank. It turned out to be diesel fuel, and not a mixture of gasoline and oil. Apparently, it was flooded by the last owner to prevent the unit from rusting from the inside. There is nothing surprising in this, because for the last 36 years the motorcycle has simply been sitting in the garage. It is worth thanking the owner - the IL has been preserved in its original “conveyor” form.
Over the years, on a motorcycle, small spots of corrosion still appear in places, appearing mainly on external elements. Despite this, overall Jupiter 4 is in excellent condition. Even the original paint of the vehicle has not faded over time.
The motorcycle wasn't even registered yet. Among the documents he has only a (still Soviet) certificate-invoice. It is noteworthy that IZH was purchased almost 3,600 km from Kremenchug, in the village of Talnakh on September 17, 1982. Here it is - harsh Soviet logistics. Were motorcycles with sidecars really such a rarity in those years? It is also interesting that the certificate indicates the exact cost of IZ Jupiter-4. It is 1,427 rubles. The car was sold in the Household Goods store of the TalnakhTorg representative office.
According to the Soviet classification, IZH Jupiter-4 is a middle-class road motorcycle, which is designed for driving on roads with different surfaces. The bike was produced from 1980 to 1985.
If we compare Jupiter-4 with the previous model, the engine should be noted first. Its power was increased from 25 to 28 horsepower. The engine has 2 cylinders. In this regard, a couple more discs were added to the motorcycle's clutch. The fourth model also acquired a shield in the crew section, which was attached to the fork, and not to the yoke.
The new product also received fundamentally new 12-volt electrical equipment. It had a large headlight with an asymmetrical beam diffuser that did not blind drivers in the oncoming lane. The installation location of the rear light has also been changed, making the motorcycle even more visible. The updated instrument panel fits perfectly into the new model. All the filling in IZ Jupiter-4 complied with international standards.
The design of the transport also had its drawbacks. The first and most important thing can be considered a huge number of terminal connections in the electrical wiring. Because of this, failures often occur in various parts of electrical equipment. The motorcycle engine itself had a very weak crankshaft.
It was improved only in 1983. Compared to the third and fifth models, the engine speed is too high at maximum power. This makes it very demanding on lubricants. This detail also generally had a bad effect on the performance of the motorcycle, especially when riding over rough terrain.
It should also be added that the mass of IZ Jupiter-4 is 160 kg. With a side trailer it increases to 255 kg. The maximum speed of the vehicle is 125 and 95 km/h, respectively. A mixture of gasoline (A-76) and oil is used as fuel. Consumption is 6.2 (7.5) liters per 100 km.
The engine is practical and very reliable
The engine turned out to be very reliable and practical. The simplicity of the system and unpretentiousness made it easier not only to repair, but also to operate the motor. Having 175 cc per cylinder, it not only pulled a side trailer loaded to nowhere, but also developed a crazy speed of 120 km/h at that time. Compared to heavy motorcycles, it even gained 10 kilometers in speed. It also performs well at low temperatures.
Motorcycle design
Like many other Izh motorcycles, Jupiter-5 did not receive any special changes in design compared to the fourth Jupiter.
Soon after the release of Planet 5, the designers cheated and borrowed a couple of external elements from it. Namely: the first model released received the usual square-shaped dashboard, which included a turn signal, low-high beam, ignition switch and speedometer. After processing, one panel was divided into two parts: indicators were placed on the first, and a speedometer on the second.
The shape of the tank was also changed. Because of this, the new model received a longer seat, combined with a rear brake light. In conclusion, it should be noted that for its time, and even in the USSR, it was rightfully a branded motorcycle. Only there was no such term then. Everything changes.

At the end of 1958, the designers of the Izhevsk Motor Plant were solving a new problem - it was necessary to prepare the plant for the production of the new Izh Jupiter motorcycle. The factory workers exhibited an experimental model at the World Exhibition in Brussels in the past, in 1957. The motorcycle was initially called “IZH-58”, but soon the name was changed to “IZH-Jupiter”. The experimental models produced successful results. Power was increased to 18 hp. Taking into account the letters from motorcyclists who came to the plant from all over the vast country, the gearbox was redesigned - it became more convenient and safe. The bearings received an improved lubrication system. The engine was made at IMZ. Serial production of IZH Jupiter began in 1961. The motorcycle retained the crew part of the Izh-56 motorcycle, but had a completely different engine - a two-cylinder, two-stroke air-cooled engine with a return-loop two-jet purge. The foot shift pedal and kickstart pedal are located on the left side of the transmission housing. The Izh-Jupiter was equipped with an automatic clutch release mechanism (like all subsequent two-cylinder models).
