Customs payments
Motorcycles are cleared through customs at the relevant customs authorities at the place of registration of the buyer. After crossing the border, a certain period is given to deliver the vehicle to the place of immediate customs clearance. A deposit is paid in advance, which is 41.6% of the catalog price of the motorcycle. It is a guarantee that the owner will be able to subsequently pay customs duties. After making the deposit, the customs authority issues a receipt, and the owner receives a guarantee certificate, which allows the vehicle to be imported and operated in Russia. The deposit is made in advance, because when crossing the customs checkpoint at the border, the amount should already be in the state treasury account, as well as all preliminary data concerning the owner and the vehicle. You cannot make a deposit at the border.
The amount of customs duty is calculated depending on the following parameters:
- customs value;
- engine volume and power;
- vehicle age;
- masses;
- engine type;
- subject of import.
Important! There is no recycling fee for motorcycles.
Most motorcycle imports are imported by individuals. If a motorcycle is imported by an individual who is a resident of the Russian Federation for personal use, then customs clearance is carried out in a simplified manner. And the customs duty is 30% of the customs value.
A resident is a person who lives on the territory of the Russian Federation for at least six months and complies with the laws of the country.
If equipment is imported for commercial purposes, then the STP is paid - the total customs payment: the import duty is 12-17% of the customs value. Additionally, 20% VAT on the customs value + customs duty and excise duty is paid (in cases where the engine power is more than 150 hp, a rate of 491 rubles per 1 hp is applied, in 2022 it will reach 511 rubles per 1 hp, and in 2023 – 531 rubles per 1 hp). Excise tax rates are established by art. 193 of the Tax Code of the Russian Federation (Part 2 was introduced by Federal Law of the Russian Federation of August 5, 2000 No. 117-FZ).
To the already mentioned payments, it is worth adding about 300 euros for additional expenses: temporary storage services, appraisal reports, etc.
It is convenient to use a special calculator for calculations. We suggest calculating customs duties here. This calculator is constantly updated, the data is updated, so the result will be as accurate as possible.
Note! Regardless of the country of import, the cost of the motorcycle and other fees are first expressed in US dollars and then converted into rubles.

There are nuances if the motorcycle is imported from a certain country. For example, if a vehicle is imported through Belarus, then all the same documents are presented (purchase agreement, invoice, technical documentation, receipts), except for cases where the vehicle delivered from European countries has already cleared customs in Belarus or was produced there. Then there is no need to go through the procedure again at the Russian border. Moreover, the motorcycle must be imported into Belarus no earlier than 2010.
It is worth mentioning separately about customs clearance of motorcycles from Germany. If the motorcycle costs more than 2,000 euros, then the export declaration must be completed in the region where the seller operates. It is difficult to do this on your own; it is advisable to do it through an accredited company. The cost of such a service is around 30-40 euros. Then you need to go to the regional customs office with the motorcycle. From there, after reconciliation, all data is sent electronically to the specified border crossing. There, the data is entered into the system, after which the motorcycle is considered imported.
Yamaha XV950 Racer
In the ranking of Japanese motorcycles, the presented two-wheeler took 5th place. This is a factory-produced custom model. When deciding which Japanese motorcycle is best to buy, many people pay attention to this bike, which has an unusual, spectacular design.
This is a two-wheeler that has a powerful motor, a belt drive, and an energy-intensive suspension. Among the shortcomings, some buyers note that the appearance of a modern bike is very similar to retro bikes.
Motorcycle auction AUCNET
The second largest auction is from Japan, where 1-2 thousand motorcycles are put up for auction every week. Bikes undergo a thorough inspection before appearing on AUCNET. After checking the appearance, technical condition and tuning, the data is entered into the auction sheet and the expert gives the car an overall score (from 0 to 9). Trading begins on Thursdays at 9:00 local time. The specificity of this auction is that the motorcycles displayed on the site are located not in one parking lot, but throughout Japan, which can lead to increased delivery times and an increase in the overall cost of the equipment.
Honda CTX700
When considering which Japanese motorcycle is the best, one cannot help but name this popular Honda model. The original design does not allow it to be unambiguously classified into a specific category. The bike could take the top positions in the ranking of the best Japanese enduro motorcycles.
This is a good option for traveling around the city and traveling on the highway for short and medium distances. The motorcycle has a comfortable fit, easy handling and a fairly large weight. As a disadvantage, users cite a cut-down windshield and a weak rear wheel shock absorber, which makes riding together uncomfortable.
BDS motorcycle auction
BDS online motorcycle auction is the largest in the country. On the day of trading, up to 6.5 thousand motorcycles are exhibited at BDS, and they take place twice a week (on Wednesdays and Fridays) simultaneously in 3 cities: Kansai, Kanto and Kyushu. Local experts check each car according to 5 parameters: the condition of the rear and front parts, engine, electrical, frame, and appearance. The grades on the sheet are given on a 10-point scale. Most often, bikes are sold on BDS with an overall rating from 1 to 5 (where 1 is for spare parts only and 5 is in excellent condition), a rating score of 6 is a sign of a practically new machine.
BDS usually has the lowest average price for all types of bikes; even with a small budget, you can find a decent motorcycle on the site. It is most profitable to purchase equipment from BDS that is between 5 and 15 years old. Also, the advantages of BDS include open statistics, numerous photographs of motorcycles from four sides, and a fixed cost of storage and delivery.
Suzuki GSX-R600
This is a sports model that has been produced for more than 25 years. It features dynamic acceleration and a comfortable fit. Thanks to high-quality assembly, reliable brakes, and a powerful engine, the presented model could top the reliability rating of Japanese motorcycles. But it is worth noting that the presented bike does not forgive mistakes in handling. Therefore, it is better to test its strength only on special sports tracks. In normal mode it is suitable for city roads. You cannot ride this two-wheeler on dirt roads or poor quality roads.
JBA motorcycle auction
A medium-sized Japanese auction, where up to 2 thousand motorcycles are exhibited twice a week. Trading opens on Tuesdays at 13:00 and on Fridays at 11:00 (local time). Each piece of equipment undergoes an expert inspection, the results of which are reflected on the auction sheet. The expert evaluates the condition of the engine, frame, chassis, appearance and assigns a score S/A/B/C/D/E for each item, where S is ideal and E is emergency condition. The overall score can range from 1 to 6, either S (perfect) or R (crash). A rating of 4 at this auction is a sign of a very good quality car.
Yamaha YBR125
This is a reliable, practical motorcycle, easy to maintain. With a relatively small engine capacity, it produces fairly good power. This is one of the most sold motorcycles in the world. It is practical, reliable, easy to operate. If you're just starting to ride a bike, you don't need to look at the ratings of the best Japanese motorcycles under 110cc. The presented model is distinguished by great safety and controllability.

How to buy at a motorcycle auction without registration and knowledge of the language
Fortunately, Bike Place offers its own catalog in Russian, which presents all the motorcycles offered at the moment you visit the site at Japanese motorcycle auctions. A convenient search guarantees that you will not miss the equipment you need, and complete information from the original auction and the availability of statistics on bikes already sold will allow you to make a choice without difficulty.

Insurance case
In most cases, victims of theft are not very worried about their loss, because their motorcycles, as a rule, are insured, including against theft.
They know that the insurance company will fully compensate the motorcycle owner for the damage. But the company itself quickly throws all its efforts into searching for the stolen motorcycle. After all, she needs her money back .
When the owner of a motorcycle discovers it is missing, he immediately writes a report of the theft to the police department. Next, the information ends up in Interpol, that is, on the international wanted list .
Difficulties of customs clearance
Even if you buy a motorcycle abroad yourself and then transport it to Russia, you will have to pay a significant amount for customs clearance. Sometimes it is actually equal to the cost of the vehicle. In addition to high rates, the importer will have to deal with the bureaucratic customs clearance procedure, which also often causes problems. To avoid delays at customs, we advise you to contact a customs representative who can clear the vehicle through customs without your direct participation. Contacting a customs broker significantly reduces the waiting time for a vehicle, increases the reliability of the transaction, and helps to avoid pitfalls during registration.
Please note that various tricks, the purpose of which is to reduce the amount of customs duties, are fraught with problems that will arise later.
For example, there are several ways to save:
- import under the guise of scrap metal;
- registration for a person living abroad;
- import without customs clearance.
However, a successful outcome cannot be guaranteed. And the last option is generally illegal.
So, what is customs clearance?
Customs clearance or customs clearance is a set of necessary actions performed when crossing the border of any goods or transport. The procedure consists of customs services, customs clearance, and payment of customs duties. Why is customs clearance necessary? When moving goods across the border, customs clearance is a necessity. This is a kind of payment for the legal presence of cargo in the Russian Federation. In fact, this procedure was created to protect domestic producers from imported goods. However, in reality, customs activities bring the state up to 50% of income to the federal budget.
Registration with the traffic police
Driving an unregistered vehicle, even if it is cleared by customs, is prohibited. Therefore, you will still need to register with the traffic police.
All motorcycles undergo maintenance at a specialized technical control station, during which steering, brakes, lighting equipment and more are checked. After this procedure, a maintenance coupon is issued, with which you need to come to the insurance company and apply for compulsory motor liability insurance. With these documents you can go to the MREO.
Note! The motorcycle must be registered within 10 days from the date of purchase, otherwise a fine will be imposed.
Documents required:
- Russian Federation passport of the owner;
- confirmation of ownership;
- PTS;
- OSAGO;
- application for registration;
- checks confirming payment of state duties.
State duties are established for:
- registration certificate;
- issuing numbers;
- making changes to the PTS (in this case not required).
Next, on the observation deck, the inspector will check the frame and engine numbers. Now you need to submit documents for registration and wait for the certificate and license plates to be issued.
The fine for late registration is 1,500-2,000 rubles for individuals and 10,000 for legal entities. The starting date for delivery of a motorcycle by a transport company is the date of shipment in the invoice.
