Few people know, but you can make a tricycle with your own hands from Izh in an ordinary garage with a fairly small budget. A small trike will have a comfortable fit, dynamics, good handling, and the lightness of the frame will allow you to accelerate at a fairly high speed.

Fork
The length of the fork is determined by your project. If you want to make a long front fork, this trike is suitable for flat roads and long rides. A more aggressive driving style will require a shorter length. A tricycle from Izh, photos of various mods of which can be found on amateur forums, may even have a trunk located above the front wheel. Of course, in terms of cross-country ability, trikes are not competitors to ATVs, but for trips to the country, garden or fishing, the work invested will more than pay off.

IZH 6.920 GR – cargo motorcycle
A modification of the cargo-passenger tricycle IZH 6.920 GR, depending on the version, is intended for the delivery of goods, transportation of people or professional activities. A two-seater motorcycle with a cargo module, in addition to the driver, will be able to transport one more passenger and cargo weighing 250 kg. The Russian tricycle was created on the basis of the IZH Jupiter-5 motorcycle, which is quite well known in our country.
IZH 6.920 GR is produced with a two-cylinder, two-stroke liquid-cooled engine with a power of 24.5 hp. (350 cm³). The two-speed transfer case has a reverse gear and a locking differential, and the liquid cooling system of the gasoline power unit ensures its stable operation in different temperature conditions.
The single-seat modification IZH 6.92003 GR is equipped with an extended body, thanks to which the load capacity of the cargo part is increased by approximately 80 kg. A motorcycle for fire extinguishing is also produced - IZH 6.92001. The front wheel disc of all versions is equipped with a two-cam drum brake with a mechanical drive or a disc brake with a hydraulic drive.
The passenger version of the trike, in the Eastern style, which has the unofficial name “motor rickshaw,” allows the transportation of 5 people, including the driver. This modification is used for the rapid delivery of people over short distances. For example, this is economically beneficial in industrial zones and production associations covering a vast territory.
The cargo module is made in the form of a two-wheeled trailer, rigidly attached to the rear of the motorcycle, and thus forming a three-wheeled motorized vehicle with a body. The rear suspension of the cargo compartment, as well as the wheels and brake mechanisms, are maximally unified with similar components of the standard version of the motorcycle.
The front suspension consists of a wheel mounted on a telescopic fork with two spring-hydraulic shock absorbers or shock absorbers with pneumatic adjustment. The rear suspension is independent, long-link. Adjusting the spring tension of shock absorbers controls the compression force of the springs, which guarantees acceptable comfort while driving.

We are constructing a cross-country motorcycle based on Izh Planet 4
The idea of creating a cross-country motorcycle appeared a long time ago; simply buying a good Japanese motorcycle is not interesting, and it is very expensive, so it was decided to use a domestically produced motorcycle as a donor. The choice was between Izh Planet and Izh Jupiter. Heavy motorcycles such as the Ural and Dnepr were immediately discarded. Later the choice fell on Izh Planet, since the single-cylinder engine of this unit produces good torque at low speeds. And spare parts, almost everything, can be found in stores.
This motorcycle was purchased as the basis of the project. All subsequent work began on the basis of its frame. The condition of all the components was not impressive, so the motorcycle was completely disassembled.
Disassembly. Disassembly took only an evening, since there was almost nothing to disassemble. Everything attached to the motorcycle was removed. Then it came to the chassis and engine.

Working with the engine.
The engine was completely disassembled and all washed. All seals in the engine were replaced. Also, all bearings were selected from Japanese counterparts; only the roller bearings of the crankshaft remained domestic.
A new Soviet-made piston engine was purchased (it took a lot of effort to find such a rarity). The gear pair of the first gear was supplied from Izh Planet 2, as it has a large gear ratio to obtain more torque. For the same reason, a leading star with a number of teeth of 16 was supplied. This is the smallest number of the produced series. A new chain, new clutch rings and a clutch basket with a double-row chain were also installed. The engine was assembled and all bolt holes were sealed with sealant to prevent oil leaks (domestic engines like to drip oil onto the asphalt). The rear engine mounts to the frame were also strengthened by welding plates onto the main mounts.
Liquid cooling.
It was decided to install liquid cooling on the motorcycle because it will be used for cross-country racing and will often have to work at maximum speed. Air cooling performs its role well if the motorcycle is used with a cradle, and at a normal riding pace. This option was not suitable here. An article was found on the Internet on installing a cylinder on an Izh Planet from the PD10 Starting Engine. According to historical data, it was developed on the basis of the Planet engine, so the mountings are completely identical. All that remained was to solve the problem of the difference in power of these engines. It was solved by installing a Carburetor from Izh Planet K68I. And boring of inlet and outlet channels, as well as purge windows.
Here you see a scan of the combination of the Izh Planet cylinder and the cylinder from PD10. Green indicates the layer of metal that needs to be removed. After modification, the cylinder is placed on the engine, it will work in tandem with a stove radiator from a VAZ 2105. An electric pump for additional heating from a Gazelle car will be installed, it will be controlled by a temperature sensor from a VAZ 2108/09 through a relay. The expansion barrel will be selected according to the volume required liquids.
Remaining improvements:
The frame was cleaned, primed and painted black (well, that's how I wanted it). The rear end has been re-welded to reduce weight and increase ground clearance.
The side covers for the battery and tool have been removed. The front fork was rebuilt. but later a plug was purchased from Izh Planet Sport, it will be installed. Also from Planet Sport a front wheel with a larger radius will be installed. Both tires are supplied with mud, the rear is R18, Czech-made BARUM, the front is R19, domestically produced. The muffler will be manufactured manually, due to the impossibility of installing a standard one and its low efficiency. The front and rear fenders will come from a Kawasaki TTR250 motorcycle.
Now work on the motorcycle has paused a bit, but will continue in the near future. By spring, the motorcycle will leave the garage under its own power.

BICYCLES YOU'VE NEVER SEEN: IZH K-16 350 CROSS MADE IN RUSSIAN MANUFACTURE
This is a very late K-1986 '16.
Izh (Izhstalzavod) is a Russian motorcycle brand founded in the city of Izhevsk in 1929. This was not the first attempt to build a Russian-made motorcycle. These would be the “Duks” of 1914-1918, built in Moscow and Riga, but the “Duks” were not very good, so in 1929 a commission of Soviet experts of the “Presidium of the Supreme Council of the National Economy of the USSR” decided: to re-equip the Izhmash arsenal to a large motorcycle factory.
Note that the kickstarter and shifter have the same shaft design - ala CZ.
Izhevsk was considered the most suitable location for a motorcycle factory, since the city had a full range of industrial production, from steel smelting to the production of complex machine tools, plus the workers had the necessary qualifications and there were no difficulties in production. supply of raw materials. On the basis of the Kalashnikov assault rifle plant, located on Bazarnaya Street in Izhevsk, the construction of an Experimental Motorcycle Plant has been approved.
Let's skip the next 55 years of utilitarian Izh street bikes to get the Cross Izh K-16. In production in various versions from 1973 to 1986, the Izh K-16 Cross was equipped with a two-stroke air-cooled IZH-PS engine with a capacity of 350 cc. Equipped with a 36 mm Jikov carburetor, it produced a claimed 36 horsepower. The Motoplat ignition system provides a stable spark at high speeds.
The engine could operate with 32 mm and 36 mm carburetors, which explains the strange multi-section air intake.
The frame is similar in design to the CZ 380, because it was the only SUV available in Russia at that time that could be copied. The front fork offered 8 inches of travel, but it was not uncommon for Russian forks to be replaced with CZ forks. The rear suspension used DeCarbon gas-hydraulic shock absorbers with remote reservoirs.
There are Izh K-16 collectors, but the bikes are very rare outside of Russia.
The overall design was simple, and it weighed 250 pounds (thanks to a lot of steel parts and very little aluminum). Unfortunately, the Izh K-16 Cross was not popular in Russia, where riders preferred CZ and hard-to-find Japanese brands. Although there were plans to export K-16s to European countries and possibly the United States, few of them made it across the ocean to be seen in any numbers. In 1986, the plant was closed and the K-16 was forgotten.
Izh Bike Farmer - disadvantages
The controller is located under the battery compartment, so sealing is a big question. It is better to immediately seal the bottom of the battery compartment.
Life hack: if the tricycle has a lead battery, immediately drill a hole in the lower side of the compartment to drain the leaked acid.
We recommend replacing the original 1.75″ tires with 24″ and 2.6″ wide front tires, but the rear ones are better 3″ wide. Driving comfort over bumps and our roads is significantly improved.
Frame
It will be easier to make an Izh tricycle with your own hands if you have experience in welding and understand the design of motorcycles or cars. The frame will have to be completely manufactured from scratch, have a pre-designed shape and structure. Usually the calculation is made in such a way as to exclude breakdowns and places with vulnerable structures, so that the trike can travel hundreds of kilometers without maintenance.
Strengthening is achieved by welding corners and additional pipes so that the fork does not vibrate. The basis of the transmission can be taken from a walk-behind tractor or combine harvesters. If you want to get a traction type Izh Planet tricycle, it is better to use sprockets in a ratio of 2:1, i.e. 50 and 25 teeth respectively.
Engine
Izh tricycle is made with my own hands based on the “Planet 3” model. In this case, the original crankshaft, generator, and 6-volt ignition coil are used. A feature of the type of body design is the transfer of the power unit to the rear, which shifts the balance when driving. Moreover, such a scheme determines high characteristics of maneuverability, controllability, and, consequently, speed.
When installing the engine and creating the frame, it is worth providing convenient access to places that require frequent maintenance. Many craftsmen make quick-release sections of the frame in order to be able to further customize their three-wheeled iron horse.
