Yamaha XJ6: owner reviews, technical specifications, review

This motorcycle is perfect for different people, because in its class it is a naked bike. The model is easy to control, has little weight and is generally very beginner-friendly. Although, of course, if a person has never ridden motorcycles before, it is better for him to look for something 125 cc, but not 600 cc, like this bike.

Yamaha XZ6 Divershen is a good mid-ranger for its class, which can become an excellent companion for commuting to work or for a pleasant time somewhere outside the city. But it is important to remember that it has nothing to do with SUVs.

Engine

Compared to the Phaser engine, this unit is more reliable, although less powerful. Apparently, its resource has increased along with deforestation. The maximum engine performance is quite large: 59.7 Nm of torque and 77.5 hp. power. These indicators allow you to reach a speed of 215 km/h, but this is definitely not worth doing, because after 150 km/h the rider will begin to be blown off the motorcycle, and if you lie down on the tank, the ride will be uncomfortable. Besides, this is still not a sportbike, and to extend its service life it is better to operate it as a naked bike.

Tire pressure

With a load of 0-90 kg, the pressure in “cold” tires should be:

  • For the front wheel 225 kPa
    or
    2.25 Bar
    (atmospheres);
  • For the rear wheel 250 kPa
    or
    2.5 Bar
    (atmospheres).

With a load of 90-184 kg, the pressure in “cold” tires should be:

  • For the front wheel 250 kPa
    or
    2.5 Bar
    (atmospheres) or
    36.25 psi
    ;
  • For the rear wheel 290 kPa
    or
    2.9 Bar
    (atmospheres) or
    42 psi
    .

Dimensions and weight

The XJ6 Diversion is neither a heavy nor a very light naked bike. Its weight together with 17 liters of fuel is 211 kg. The dimensions of the model are also average: the wheelbase is insignificant - 1440 mm, and the seat height is 785 mm. A motorcycle consumes an average of 6 liters of gasoline per hundred kilometers; This is not much, but it is important to remember that with aggressive driving, fuel consumption can increase significantly.

Quiet

These include the Kawasaki ER-6f and Yamaha XJ6 Diversion . Just turn on the ignition and the rest will come naturally. Pleasant and intuitive controls are suitable for any beginner: make and receive calls, write SMS and don’t worry about the battery running out. At the same time, the presence of fairings makes the motorcycles also suitable for riding for hundreds of kilometers.

We start the motorcycle engines... and in response we hear (almost) silence. If there were a competition for the quietest exhaust sound - static and in motion - the ER-6f and Diversion would definitely win prizes. True, the sound of the Kawasaki engine is a little more lively and sporty, which is quite consistent with the image of the “brother of the younger Ninja.” Externally, the ER-6f closely inherits the image of this sportbike. The diversion is more restrained in appearance, and the color scheme of the motorcycle is calmer. Returning to the exhaust sound, or more precisely, the shape of the exhaust systems, we note that both motorcycles have muffler banks located at the bottom. This makes life easier for the passenger and eliminates problems with installing side cases of a certain shape. By the way, the most common tank bags with magnetic fastenings are also suitable for these motorcycles: their tanks are made of metal.

"1. Excellent instrumentation, but the tachometer and fuel level indicators, which are actually combined into one line, are difficult to read 2. Both the brake lever and the clutch lever can be adjusted 3. The front turn signals of the ER-6f are integrated into the fairing. They look quite elegant 4. The hole of the low-mounted muffler can is located on the right side 5. The rear suspension shock absorber is installed on the side, there is no lever. The rider and passenger footpegs are equipped with rubber pads 6. Rear 220mm petal disc brake with 2-piston caliper. The front discs are also petal"

As mentioned above, the Kava is more sporty in appearance: it’s not for nothing that in the States the motorcycle is sold as the Ninja 650. The riding position on the ER-6f also has a more sporty slant: the tank is located close to the rider, the saddle is 5 mm higher than that of the Diversion, yes and in terms of density it is much stiffer. The weight is slightly shifted forward - enough to get the thrill of active cornering, but at the same time not deprive the bike of comfort when riding long distances. The ER-6f, like the Diversion, will not be a burden for a rider with a height of 170 cm, although the weight of the motorcycles, as for a 600-k, is not small: 196.6 kg for Kawasaki and 202.2 kg for Yamaha (without fuel, according to data measurements). Unlike the ER-6f, the Diversion offers the most relaxed ride possible. An extremely comfortable seating position, even despite a larger tank (17.3 liters versus 15.5 liters for the Kawasaki) between the rider’s legs, a wide and high handlebar, and slightly forward footpegs - all this creates ideal conditions for a quiet ride. For sportier driving on the Diversion, Yamaha developers should change the weight distribution with an emphasis on the front wheel. The vocation of a motorcycle-traveler is emphasized by excellent wind protection - more developed than that of the ER-6f, and a calm 4-cylinder in-line engine, which throughout the entire range transmits very little vibration to the handlebars and footpegs and... even less emotions to the rider.

Prices

The cost of a used model in our country starts at 250 thousand rubles. The average price of a motorcycle without mileage in Russia is from six thousand dollars. As a rule, the condition of imported motorcycles is much higher. But when buying at an auction abroad from home, you must understand that you are assessing the condition based on the photo. The Yamaha XJ6 is a reliable motorcycle, and motorcyclists abroad are responsible people, but there is a risk of running into a careless fraudster.

It is quite possible to find a decent motorcycle in our country with mileage throughout Russia. You need to thoroughly check the motorcycle before purchasing in order to know about all its subtleties and nuances. The surest option, if your funds allow you, is to personally go abroad to buy a motorcycle, choose the best one, bring it into Russia, go through customs clearance and then enjoy your new bike in perfect condition.

A new version

The new Yamaha XJ6 Diversion is a completely different motorcycle. It doesn't have the disadvantages of the first generation. And the price is very, very attractive. The model is perfect for beginner motorcyclists.

In general, the Yamaha XJ6 is a kind of variation of the Yamaha FZ6 (this unit has been sold in Europe instead of the XJ6 since 2009). In the American market, the XJ6 is called the Yamaha FZ6R. The appearance of the Yamaha XJ6 motorcycle in Europe is associated with the desire of the company's management to offer motorcyclists a low-power and budget model that would be aimed at the maximum number of potential buyers. The XJ6 is much cheaper in price, taxes and insurance than the original Yamaha FZ6 (98 horsepower engine).

It is worth noting that many manufacturers try to create very powerful and fast motorcycles, but for some reason they sometimes forget about transport for beginners. But this is more than it seems at first. This is a model for beginners, for girls, and for those who simply love measured motorcycle riding. It is very gratifying that at least someone produces real things for this large category of buyers.

Disadvantages of a motorcycle

Owner reviews about the Yamaha XJ6 are not enthusiastic, but mostly positive.

Yes, a large man (the Japanese don’t grow up like that) is not only uncomfortable behind the wheel, he also needs to manage to look in the rear-view mirrors.

Very mixed reviews about long trips. Some are completely delighted, while others think that the seat is too thin and hard to sit on for a long journey, especially with the shocks transmitted from the rear budget suspension.

Pre-restyling models had very uncomfortable handles for the passenger.

Maybe the Japanese responded to calls to make life easier for the second number and therefore improved the passenger handles.

The low bike, according to pilots, scrapes the footrest on the asphalt with every turn, and the brackets on which it is attached are weak and bend, replenishing the blood of an inexperienced passenger with adrenaline.

The low beam, which dimly illuminates the periphery, also caused some dissatisfaction.

And, probably, the desire to see the gear number on the dashboard seems like an unreasonable whim in a budget model.

Otherwise, the XJ6 is fully consistent with its price: it is simple and reliable.

Yamaha XJ6: reviews

The second generation XJ6 does not cause problems for its owner. The motorcycle is good in everything. This is a worthy representative of the class. Sometimes reviews of a model indicate problems with the fuel system, but this is usually due to poor fuel quality. Experienced motorcyclists note that most modern motorcycles are very sensitive to low-quality domestically produced fuel.

Many people complain about increased fuel consumption, but this problem also appears when saving on fuel. If you refuel at trusted places, such problems usually do not arise. Often repairs are much more expensive than prevention, so don’t skimp on fuel and forget about such troubles.

Judging by the reviews, the second-generation XJ6 chassis is very decent and durable. Apparently, the manufacturer drew conclusions about the lowering of the suspension on the first generation XJ6 and made the appropriate changes. Owner reviews indicate that maintaining this model is not too expensive.

Features of the model, or What else do we not know about the popular motorbike?

The new model was significantly redesigned, but the creators did not change the old front shock absorbers due to savings: this could greatly increase the already high price of this model. The thickness of the discs was reduced by 0.5 mm (they should play a role in reducing inertia during acceleration and braking). The rims have become lighter, and the use of a lighter 520 chain and a smaller rear axle diameter allows the unsprung and rotating masses of the motorbike to be reduced. Accordingly, greater realization of the motor’s capabilities became possible: to improve its elasticity, it had to be redesigned. The combination of intake and exhaust devices has changed.

As a result, the thrust increased significantly by 4,000-5,000 rpm in the main engine operating mode, as a result of which it became possible to change gears more rarely, which greatly simplifies the process of driving the bike. In order to reduce costs, the aluminum frame was replaced with a steel one, which increased the overall weight of the motorcycle. For a visual comparison, consider the Yamaha Diversion 600 (1992) model in the photo below.

The weight of the bike today when fully equipped is about 216 kg. As standard, flat sliders protect the equipment from damage. It is also possible to equip it with an ABS system. The suspension is quite soft and works perfectly. On good road surfaces the bike feels balanced. The steel frame is not practical enough for driving on bad roads; it will be much more difficult to control the motorcycle: but this should not scare you away, because this model has many more advantages. As for the gear shift and clutch mechanism, it has been redesigned for better maneuverability in city traffic. The braking system meets the expectations of even the most experienced drivers. The gearbox is precise and shifts smoothly. The top speed is about 215 km/h, and it accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. It starts moving easily, starting at idle speed. All these points, of course, attract the attention of the future buyer, but it’s still worth paying attention to the insides of the model.

Chassis and brakes

The suspension here not only cannot be criticized, but deserves special praise: the rear monoshock absorber and front telescopic fork have the same travel of 130 mm and contribute to excellent, comfortable handling. This is also a merit of the competent geometry of the local frame and the smooth ride provided by the engine and transmission.

Three brake discs provide plenty of stopping power, but if you want to get the most out of the bike, it's worth purchasing the XJ6 Diversion with ABS. The model is very ergonomic, and sitting on it is a pleasure, which, of course, in some sense improves handling.

Competitors

The model has direct competitors; it must be said that there are not so few of them in the class:

  • Honda CB650F (Honda CBR650F and Honda CBF600);
  • Kawasaki ER-6;
  • Suzuki GSF 650 Bandit.

The “Bandit” causes the most problems; motorcycle enthusiasts really like the model; the motorcycle has always had excellent sales ratings in all markets of the world. But it is worth noting that each model has its own circle of admirers, and the XJ6 discussed in this article is no exception. Thanks to its excellent characteristics, the motorcycle has been a bestseller for many years now. What are its advantages, we will consider below.

Results

The motorcycle is worth the money they ask for it. The model is not suitable for experienced motorcyclists due to its lack of power and aggressive character. For beginners or lovers of measured riding, this behavior of the motorcycle is undoubtedly a great advantage.

Yamaha XJ6 is a simple and inexpensive model, unpretentious and unbreakable. A motorcycle without any obvious “blunders” or any design flaws. As a bonus, you get a stylish and modern design that looks much more expensive than it actually is.

With such a motorcycle you won’t be able to stand out among experienced motorcyclists, but you will always be able to make a splash on beginners or people who are far from the world of motorcycles. Moreover, everyone's tastes are different; not all motorcycles need to be super powerful and move at jet speeds.

Overview of modifications

The XJ6 Diversion model became a kind of continuation of the more powerful Yamaha FZ6 and replaced it in the European markets. In America it is sold under the name FZ6R.

It was produced almost from the very beginning in three versions: a basic one with a front fairing, without a front fairing with the index N in the model designation, and in a sports version, designated by the letter F.

The model in all variants was restyled in 2013.

The side panels have been redesigned, and changes have been made to the headlight fairing, passenger handles and LED instrument panel lighting. Yellow color has been removed from the color options; the basic version can be equipped with an ABS anti-lock braking system as an additional option. The saddle received a new leather trim, and the turn signals received new lenses. The chain tension system position indicator appears.

At the same time, Yamaha released a limited edition XJ 6 SP Dark Menace. It differs only in the spectacular carbon fiber finish, combined and six on the fairings.

History of changes

Despite the long production period, the XJ6 Diversion has not undergone significant changes. However, something happened in his biography, and a sports version was released, in the name of which the letter “F” appeared at the end.

To summarize, we should note the main advantages of the XJ6 Diversion, including:

  • reliability and simplicity;
  • maneuverability and lightness;
  • comfortable fit;
  • durable engine;
  • good wind protection, which, by the way, can be strengthened.

The XJ6 Diversion can compete with many mid-range naked bikes that have a much later release date. An excellent choice for experienced and not so experienced bikers who can handle a 600cc motorcycle.

Model strengths

This is a compact motorcycle with excellent handling. In addition, the model has excellent balanced characteristics. It is impossible not to note the torque; it is already impressive at low and medium shaft speeds. The steering wheel is adjustable, allowing you to customize it well. The riding position on the motorcycle is low, which means that you can find a comfortable riding position for a driver of almost any height.

It is impossible not to notice the stylish and beautiful appearance of the motorcycle and its relatively low weight. This is the motorcycle that can be said to be unisex. You can often see representatives of the fair sex driving the XJ6.
