Excursion into history

The journey of the Chang Jiang 750 (CJ750 for short) begins in the Soviet Union. In 1940, development of a heavy motorcycle began at the Moscow experimental site under the leadership of N.P. Serdyukov.

The engineer trained at the BMW plant for five years. The task was to create a heavy motorcycle that would be used for military purposes, and the BMW R71, which had proven itself well in the Wehrmacht, was chosen as the model. Several copies were secretly purchased, and already in the spring of 1941, the Soviet Union began to produce its own version of the motorcycle. It received the name M-72 and the “armored vehicle” class. More than eight thousand units of equipment came off the assembly line, both in the version with a sidecar and in a single version.

At war

The motorcycle was used for military purposes. The installation of bags for ammunition, spare parts, as well as brackets for attaching a light machine gun was provided. They are called swivels. For example, a Degtyarev machine gun could be installed on them. It was attached with a bipod to its plate, and it was possible not only to conveniently transport the machine gun from place to place, but also to fire even while driving.

There were even modifications with the ability to install an 82-mm mortar in the sidecar, although they were supplied in very limited quantities. A few years after the end of the war, civilian motorcycles based on the M-72 were also put on sale: the cross-country M-72K, two sports models (with and without a sidecar) and the racing M-80. However, the output was small.

Review of the Kawasaki ZXR 750 motorcycle

appeared in 1989 as one of the main competitors of the Suzuki GSX-R750. The concept of Japanese sports motorcycles with an engine capacity of 750 cc was quite interesting: companies were trying to create a mid-range model, between 600 cc and 1000 cc, that had the advantages of both (light weight, handling) and the other (power). The Kawasaki ZXR750 is a prominent representative of such attempts.

The Kawasaki ZXR 750 model was aimed not only at the Japanese market, but was also actively sold in Europe and North America. Moreover, it is worth canceling that foreign markets were the main priority for sales. Japanese versions were produced with an engine of limited power up to 77 hp. (export full-power versions produced up to 128 hp; a power increase package of up to 145 hp was also available on models of recent years of production), which sharply reduced demand. In the North American market, the ZXR750 was sold under the name Kawasaki ZX-7 (ZX-7R)

Features of the Kawasaki ZXR 750 include an aluminum frame, an inertial charging system (since 1993), adjustable sports suspension, powerful 4-piston brakes, a 6-speed gearbox, an 18-liter fuel tank and a dry weight of 195 kg.

Main modifications of the Kawasaki ZXR 750:

  • Kawasaki ZXR750 / Ninja ZX-7
    is the regular version of the motorcycle. Has a passenger seat. Designated as: ZX750H, ZX750J, ZX750L.
  • Kawasaki ZXR750R / Ninja ZX-7R
    – “track” version of the motorcycle. Was available from 1991 to 1994. It has a plug in place of the passenger seat, a 17-liter aluminum fuel tank (since 1993), flat-throttle carburetors, slightly increased engine power, fully adjustable suspension (with the ability to change height) and other gearbox settings.

1995 was the last year of production of the model, after which it came off the production line and was replaced by the Kawasaki ZX-7R / ZX-7RR. Currently, the ZXR750 model is quite rare both in Russia and at Japanese auctions, enjoying limited demand.

New country

In the fifties, developments of the M-72 were sold to China. The motorcycle was named Chang Jiang and was produced at an aircraft factory (China Nanchang Aircraft Manufacturing Company). The unit was produced until the nineties, but today its production will be illegal due to non-compliance with environmental standards. However, China still produces small parts for this motorcycle to meet the needs of those who purchased the equipment in the past. There are modifications of the CJ750 with an electric starter and an inclined fairing with two headlights.

Due to its limited speed and control, the motorcycle was mainly used by police and medical services in the version with a sidecar. China attempted to export Chang Jiang to European countries, but its low competitiveness prevented it. In the end, it was a copy of a motorcycle produced before the war, and, despite some advantages (proven design, the ability to transport fairly heavy loads), it could not compete with the new generation of motorcycles.

While the community of boxer bike lovers and fans of the Ural brand were waiting for technical updates to motorcycles from the domestic motorcycle plant, for example, the appearance of an injector and liquid cooling, it became known that they were planning to release their own version of the sidecar, built on the basis of the legendary M72.

The choice fell on the M72 not by chance: in the 1950s, the Irbit Motorcycle Plant transferred equipment and tooling for the production of a motorcycle that was outdated at that time to China, which launched the production of several models at capacities. For some time, Chang Jiang products were sold even in Russia, but then supplies stopped and people began to forget about Chinese motorcycles with a cradle. And as it turned out, it was in vain!


The classic design of the new CJ650 will interest adherents of the Heritage style, which is gaining popularity all over the world.

From the outside, the motorcycle definitely resembles the old Ural: the sidecar, fenders, wheels and suspension are very similar, if not to the new ones, then at least to the previous models of the Russian plant. But the filling... It seems that the Chinese, who were haunted by the success of the Ural in the US market, heard the pleas of all the oppositionists and installed a new engine. And not just any, but a very good copy of the previous generation Kawasaki ER-6 power unit, known to Russian motorcyclists from the 650 cc CF Moto motorcycles.

The 650 cm3 two-cylinder engine has an in-line arrangement of cylinders and is mounted transversely in the frame. Its equipment includes an injector, liquid cooling, and an impressive power rating of 71 hp. surpasses even the original modern Urals! It is clear that it will not be easy for a high-revving riding motor to carry a heavy sidecar, but the maximum power, twice the potential of the domestic analogue, is a solid foundation.


Yes, the Chang Jiang CJ650 drive is indeed chain driven!

The new engine also introduced new features: the motorcycle will no longer have reverse gear, and the chain main drive puts an end to the technical feasibility of creating a drive to the sidecar wheel.

The frame and chassis had to be completely redesigned: the rear suspension was changed (“spark plugs” were a thing of the past and it finally had a swingarm!), and disc brakes were installed.


The Chang Yang stroller is not very different from the Ural stroller. But the pneumatic strut for the trunk lid is Chinese know-how.

According to the manufacturer, they plan to assemble the new product on an assembly line, so unlike its predecessor, which was assembled in small batches by hand, the new Chang Yang will cost almost half as much - approximately $7,000.

These are very ambitious plans, because we are talking about a prototype, albeit one that has set a completely new bar in the “sidecar” segment. However, knowing the performance of Asian brands, it is safe to say that it is only a matter of time before the Chang Jiang CJ650 appears on the roads.

The motorcycle has a four-valve, two-cylinder boxer engine with a displacement of 745 cm3. The transmission is four-speed, the wheel diameter is the same - 19 inches. Each cylinder receives fuel from its own carburetor. The Chang-Yang motorcycle is a road bike. It is quite heavy - about 230 kg with an empty tank without a stroller and 350 with a stroller. Engine power is 27 horsepower, the maximum speed of the motorcycle is 120 km/h. However, drum brakes cannot provide high-quality braking at high speeds, and the overall controllability of the unit is quite low even in a single version, although the opposed arrangement of the cylinders ensures balance and a low center of gravity.


The Chang-Yang motorcycle is well suited for leisurely driving even over long distances; moreover, it can cope with heavy loads and is equipped with a large 24-liter gas tank.

Kawasaki ZXR 750 - a motorcycle from the nineties era

This is a flashy sports bike, although it looks typical. The Kawasaki ZXR 750 motorcycle is a machine for those who prefer motorcycles from the nineties era, but with good dynamic characteristics.

This sportbike cannot compete with modern options, but connoisseurs of models with average power will be pleased with it.

Appearance

The original exterior combines three colors: green, white and blue. The motorcycle is painted with several diagonal lines, as is usually done with sports models. This is perhaps the most aesthetic option for combining three or more colors in the color of a sportbike.

The design is ordinary, as are the dimensions. The windshield is low, but it is sufficient at high speeds when the rider rests on the tank. In other cases this is not required. Alloy wheels are no different from those on most old and current sportbikes. There are few chrome elements on the outside. First of all, the exhaust pipe.

Comfort

The car is easy to drive, although a beginner would be better off with a weaker sportbike (or the weakest road motorcycle, if a person is basically inexperienced in riding bikes). As with other sports variants, it is more convenient to drive on country roads. In the city it doesn’t get too stuck in traffic jams, but it’s uncomfortable to move around courtyards due to the stiff sports suspension.

The fit is no different from that of most other representatives of the class. The fact that there are two headlights in front, and not one, may be unusual for many connoisseurs of the sports class. But over time, a habit develops. Large rectangular mirrors are convenient.

Dimensions and weight

The dimensions of the car are standard for a sports bike. They are close to the dimensions of road motorcycles. Unlike sports tourists, this model is shorter and lighter. But because of this, it is not suitable for riding together. No, physically a second person can fit in the back, but a sportbike is not designed for that. It is especially dangerous to drive two people quickly, because only the driver will be able to properly duck from the wind currents.

The dimensions of the Kawasaki ZXR 750 are:

The aluminum frame is a natural solution for the sports class. This lightweight metal makes the vehicle suitable for high speeds. The mass of all components of the ZXR 750 is enough to keep the car stable, including on a highway in the middle of a windy steppe.

Production

The car appeared in 1989. This time is an era of rapid development of motorcycle technology in principle. Sportbikes had not yet gained the popularity they have now, but they were becoming more and more interesting to the general public. The ZXR 750 did not stand out much from the rest, if only because it was originally intended to be mid-range in power.

Classmates

This model was also released to compete with the Suzuki GSX-R750. Like the Kawasaki motorcycle, this bike, along with the YZF 750 and FZR 750 from Yamaha, is a medium-sized machine in terms of engine capacity, as well as other indicators thereof. All these motorcycles were powerful for their time, however.

History of changes

The evolution of the model is as follows:

  1. In 1990, carburetors were changed.
  2. In 1991 the frame and engine were changed.
  3. In 1993 they restyled it again, adding an inertial supercharging system.

The ZXR 750 leaves the assembly line in 1995. There are many reasons for this, but we can only speculate about them. It was necessary to release new models for one economic reason or another, the audience wanted to see new products, competitors were preparing to offer the world more advanced bikes...

What do the owners say?

Judging by the reviews from photos and videos, the car performs well on smooth roads. However, on problem sections of the route it is important to drive slowly. This applies to all sportbikes with classic suspension travel. The point is not only about the safety of the driver and others, but also about the fact that potholes quickly cause this and other representatives of the class to become unusable.

Most of the controversy concerns urban conditions. However, it is important to note that these, again, do not directly relate to the Kawasaki ZXR 750. We are talking about the sport class and whether it is advisable to buy such an option for an urban environment, no matter how much you like the characteristic design, fit and sounds.

According to the description of those who often travel around the city, the motorcycle often falls over in a smoothly flowing traffic jam. However, compared to sports tourists, the problem is not so acute. The view through the windshield suits everyone, as does driving on country roads.

Most owners are sympathetic to the technical characteristics of this sportbike, but warn that spare parts are not so easy to obtain, which makes maintenance difficult. Nowadays it’s no longer possible to get a new motorcycle, but the cost of a used one is low, and many people note this. About 190 thousand Russian rubles - that’s how much such a car costs.

Kawasaki ZXR 750 is a good bike for its era. Now the model is suitable for those who do not want to drive a super-powerful representative of the sports class. If average speeds suit you, then this option will please you on the race track. For those who need a regular bike to get around, neither this machine nor any other sports bike is suitable.

Nowadays

Considering that the Chang-Yang motorcycle has not been produced for more than twenty years, the search for it can be compared to buying a Ural or Dnepr abroad. It's difficult, but possible. But in the country of origin these are not rare and inexpensive motorcycles. The same applies to the CJ750 - it can easily be found in China, where it is still plowed across the expanses of country roads. For a true lover of retro motorcycles, of course, there are no obstacles, but buying them abroad, transporting them and processing documents can cost a lot of money. On top of everything you can add the money that will probably be required for repairs.
