Versions and modifications

The Sova modifications have another significant difference - this is a completely new suspension, assembled by ZiD engineers from scratch.

At the rear, an innovative (for that time) pendulum system was used, equipped with two shock absorbers with a stroke of 115 millimeters; at the front, a telescopic fork with a stroke of 155 mm was used.

Ground clearance, or, as they say now, ground clearance, was 125 millimeters. Both wheels received drum brakes.

I’ve been dreaming about a motorcycle since I was 13. I turned 16, got a category A license, and I got an Owl. Purchased in 2005 for 10 thousand rubles. At that time she was 7 years old and had driven 1000 km. It was covered in stickers, transfers and little things... A couple of years before that it was in a barn, but without any special consequences, the corrosion only affected the wheel rims.

The first trip, not counting the visit to the technical inspection and the traffic police, was a drive to the dacha 50 km away. During this trip I more or less got used to the controls and got comfortable behind the wheel. For three seasons the motorcycle lived mainly in the country, I rode just like that, went fishing, to the city and back. Then he began traveling around the city on business, going to motorcycle rallies and parties in Girvas and Olonets. In 2010, I rode quite a long distance around Lake Onega, and in August of this year - around Lake Ladoga, 755 and 1200 km, respectively. I went to Mount Vottovaara. There are countless small trips up to 100 km in the outskirts of the city and country house. Now we have almost 8 seasons and more than 20,000 km behind us.

The engine power is certainly not enough, only 14 forces. But the seating position is very comfortable, the footpegs are in place, the back is straight, the saddle is wide and soft, the front part goes over the tank. My butt gets numb after an hour and a half of continuous driving. You fit in with a passenger without any problems, it’s comfortable for both. But only if the passenger weighs more than 50 kg... Both dynamics and handling suffer greatly. The steering wheel is also conveniently wide and has a crossbar. Four speeds shift clearly, neutral is caught well. On the dashboard there is a speedometer and indicator lamps for turn signals and high beams. There is a convenient, very durable trunk. The motorcycle weighs 120 kg and can be easily lifted using the trunk alone. There is also a side stand and a center stand. Everything is visible in the mirrors very well; the glass is flat and does not distort the scale.

The motorcycle is very reliable! Of course, if you don’t count weakened fasteners and broken cables and similar nonsense as serious malfunctions. Over 20,000 km (and this is a lot for a small two-stroke bike), there was not a single breakdown that would prevent it from getting to the garage. It always starts, cold - with the help of a pre-start enrichment agent (“suction”), warm - immediately, with half a turn. Having returned from the army, I excitedly started the engine (it had been sitting in the garage for a year without moving)... the engine started right away! Settings for the ignition and carburetor do not cause problems, everything is set up once and does not require attention (electronic non-contact ignition, carb k65v).

Cruising speed is 70-80 km/h. But it, the maximum speed, and the behavior of the motorcycle in general change from trip to trip and depend, apparently, on many factors, the quality of gasoline, the amount of oil in the mixture, temperature and humidity, wind and altitude, degree of load and generally on the mood of the motorcycle . Either you go calmly at 80 km/h and still have some reserve, then at 70 it screams loudly and doesn’t want to go.

The maximum speed according to the passport is 105, according to the speedometer - 120 (reached today =)), I haven’t squeezed that much before). The speedometer is always up about 10 km/h, driven by the gearbox. Fuel consumption on the highway at 70 km/h with luggage is 3 l/100 km. I used to dilute gasoline with M8 oil, now I use mineral two-stroke oil, and I pour M8 or Lukoil 15W40 into the box. I can speak negatively about the suspensions; they work poorly, despite regular oil changes. It’s unpleasant to drive on a broken dirt road, and with a passenger on large bumps it breaks the suspension. The brakes hold up averagely, I would like more grip. And the wheels are 16″, well, that’s no good ((Only for good asphalt. It would be necessary to have 17″-18″. But they are interchangeable in size.

Speaking of reliability - during our life together, Owl's cables broke (usually the front brake), and light bulbs burned out. The brake light glass mounts broke, I installed it from Minsk. At 15 thousand, the return spring of the gearbox foot burst. The chain is pulled out quickly. The kickstarter sector was replaced (the teeth were worn out), rear brake pads, chain and sprockets, and tires. Oil leaks from under the kickstarter shaft seal; replacing the seal does not help. The chain guards wear out quickly, and now I have a third set.

I also drove in winter... Along forest paths, garages, ski slopes. Taking off everything you can so as not to get hurt when you fall and at the same time to lose weight. For the winter, I raised the needle in the carb by one notch. At speed the clutch cable freezes, at first I was even scared why the clutch would not be released. While I was standing and wondering what was what, the cable thawed from the heat of the engine. It was a pity, so I didn’t rock out to my heart’s content, I skated on light. But a friend in Minsk gave us a lot of heat - jumping from springboards and into snowdrifts, and skidding turns, etc.

In 2008, I had an accident - I drove into the back of a car at a speed of approx. 45 km/h. The turn signals were broken, the fork and fender were bent, the steering wheel mount was broken, and other minor issues. I restored everything.

The result is this - the bike is excellent! I just can’t get enough of it and enjoy riding it every time. Let the Japanese cyclists look down on them - I know that we can handle both dirt and long distances.
