The single-cylinder 250 cc air-cooled engine produces 17 horsepower and 18 nm of torque, although the engine will have to be cranked - it loves high speeds. This carburetor engine consumes gasoline quite economically for its characteristics, in the city it fits into about three and a half liters of AI-92.

Actually, the Kawasaki Estrella was created as a small, light, stylish city motorcycle for retro lovers. Thanks to an average seat height of just 734 millimeters on the current model, even shorter riders won't have any trouble getting their feet to the ground. In addition, the choice of tuning for this long-lived model is impressive, and buying any other lowered seat will not be difficult.

The instrument panel is analogue, with a speedometer and tachometer; in this regard, the Kawasaki Estrella does not change from year to year. The Kawasaki Estrella 250, however, has always been considered a reliable motorcycle. Structurally, the Kawasaki Estrella is as simple as a brick, and this is its advantage - that maintenance and minor repairs (yes, Japanese motorcycles sometimes break down too, especially if they are twenty years old) will not cause any problems for any person who is not too crooked.

Another advantage of this bike is the seating position - it is really very comfortable. For example, on the Honda CB400SS, which is, in fact, a classmate of the Kawasaki Estrella, the author of these lines, with a height of slightly over 180 cm, found it a little cramped to sit, and there was a desire to move to the passenger seat, but on the Estrella, with similar dimensions, such a desire does not arise.

The brakes on this bike are what you'd expect - a single ventilated disc at the front and an archaic drum at the rear. The rear drum brake, by the way, is also not useless, and with proper operation of the rear brake pedal, the motorcycle stops well, but it still has the role of an auxiliary one, since it is easy to pinch and block it by skidding the rear wheel. What this could mean is probably not worth talking about.

In general, we can say that it’s not just that Kawasaki Estrella has been produced for the third decade. The combination of excellent quality of all elements, proven and proven style over the years and not the highest price make this motorcycle attractive to a wide audience. And as a motorcycle for driving around the city, it is just perfect, successfully squeezing in where everyone else stands.

The peculiarity of the small-capacity BJ250 engine is that after 30,000 km, the timing chain must be changed. Otherwise the engine begins to die. He dies smoothly and unnoticeably. And then, suddenly, the “motor doctor” tells you that you need to order a bunch of spare parts from Japan. And this is extremely expensive. Look at the timing chain - you are surprised or happy, wondering how long it will take to change it. By the way, the timing chain on the Estrella is exactly the same as on the Yamaha TTR250. But a chain from a catalog for Yamaha is twice as cheap as a chain for Kava from the same catalogue.

After inspecting the timing chain, if everything is good, inspect the fork legs. Like any other motorcycle, the presence of “potholes” on the stays means replacing the stay, and this, again, is a lot of money. My fork lasted almost 30,000 km, after which it began to cry. The oil seals and a can of oil cost me $30. But my friend had to change his pen. A new fork blade costs about $500. I’ll say right away that it’s difficult to find anything at a disassembly, the model is rare.

After the timing chain and fork legs, inspect the rubber. The tire size on Estrella is not popular; this size is delivered to order. As a rule, they set: Rear 120/90-17, 120/80-17; Front 100/90-18 That is, going to choose where is better and cheaper is not an option. If the tires are old, then this is an additional cost. Bargain, or better yet, refuse to buy before it’s too late.

I would recommend choosing a motorcycle with disc brakes. Finding brake pads for disc brakes is not a problem. I use two or three sets per season. Fortunately, almost every motorcycle store has them. One of the most common brake pads for Estrella with disc brakes is Ferodo FDB314. But I don't like them.

The motorcycle was purchased for active use. It is used almost every day from March to October in any weather.


Since the motorcycle was received almost new, we can make some information on the resource of spare parts. I drove more than 30,000 km on it, and here’s what was replaced: — a set of clutch discs with springs (it started slipping); — a chain with stars (I decided that it was time to change it and changed it); — front fork seals (oil leaked at 30,000 km); — rear shock absorbers (died after 20,000 km); — Timing chain (as expected, replaced after 30,000 km). — fuel tap membrane (fuel tap leaked); — clutch cable (broken); — Throttle cables (replaced just in case); — battery Characteristics: Capacity, Ah: 8.6. Regular consumables: 1) It is recommended to change the oil every 3000 km. Filter Hiflofiltro HF123. Oil Motul 5100, 2 liters; 2) brake pads. Kawasaki Estrella - “A motorcycle for an egoist.” It is not comfortable for two people to ride on it. There are several reasons for this, including the position of the second number and the power of the horse. If you are looking for a motorcycle for a beautiful ride through Europe, then the Kawasaki Estrella is not your choice.

The motorcycle fits seamlessly into narrow city streets and suburban secondary roads. He is uncomfortable on expressways and wide avenues. Comfortable speed 90 km/h. The Kawasaki Estrella motorcycle is a magnificent creation that is designed to awaken warm feelings among connoisseurs of retro classics. The bike represents what the British were so happy with in years gone by: a medium-sized motorcycle with no special features, which was perfect for quiet riding around the city.

The Kawasaki Estrella is an amazing example of how a beloved classic can be clearly represented in the modern era. The characteristic roar of the engine, its grumbling chirping, beautiful but simple frame elements and the same design of protruding components. Yes, unlike some types of motorcycles, these bikes almost completely expose their structure.

For whom

The Kawasaki Estrella motorcycle is perfect for those who want to use the bike not for high speeds, but for leisurely trips. Such walks can be pleasant in their own way, and you don’t want to go on them on a chopper or, especially, on a sports motorcycle.

Of course, a large, solid cruiser, one of those often called classics, may also be well suited for such leisurely trips. But here, who likes what more... Estrella is an excellent choice for connoisseurs of retro classics in the English style. In addition, unlike massive cruisers, this bike at least looks more compact.

Specifications

Don't expect any special agility from Estrella. That's not what this bike is for. It is for quiet trips on quiet roads. And its components are corresponding. To call them weak would be wrong. They are simply selected according to the purpose of this amazing machine.

Engine

The engine here is single-cylinder and four-stroke. Its working volume is 249 cubic centimeters. Its maximum torque is 18 Newton meters at 5500 rpm. Power at its peak is 18 horsepower at 7500 rpm.

This is quite enough for such a retro classic. The maximum speed that the motorcycle is capable of is, of course, low. It is 121 kilometers per hour. With a gas tank capacity of 13 liters and taking into account the fact that 3.17 liters are consumed per 100 kilometers, the bike can travel a little over four hundred kilometers without refueling.

Transmission

The motorcycle has a five-speed gearbox. It has a chain as a drive. In principle, such a model does not need more. This is enough for Estrella to satisfy the needs of the target audience.

Dimensions and weight

The dimensions of the bike are average, as befits a retro classic. It reaches a length of 2075 millimeters. Its width is 775 millimeters. Height – 1035 millimeters. The wheelbase of the motorcycle is 1400 millimeters. The saddle height is 735 millimeters.

The motorcycle's curb weight reaches 161 kilograms, which makes it light compared to many other bikes, both cruisers and sports. Due to its relatively small size, Estrella does not look bulky. This is especially important for those who have little space in the garage.

In addition, such small sizes have some kind of charm and simplicity. This is another feature of the motorcycle that is its advantage. With its small size, as well as its design, the motorcycle emphasizes the modesty and some indescribable nobility of the technology of a bygone era.

Chassis and brakes

The motorcycle has a steel frame. It is half duplex. Its design at first glance does not represent anything special, but if you look closely at these meek features, it is immediately clear that this is old school. The designers managed to very accurately convey the style of old English motorcycles, which Estrella imitates.

The rear suspension is pendulum. It is equipped with two shock absorbers. Its stroke is 95 millimeters. At the front, the suspension is provided by a 39mm telescopic fork with 120mm of travel. Such pendants are quite enough for Estrella with her calm disposition.

The wheels are spoked, and this is quite natural: is it really possible to imagine such a classic with alloy wheels? It is the spokes that convey the spirit of a bygone era, when technical chic was achieved not so much through speed and power, but through constructive and design features that seemed to be forever lost both in the automotive industry and in the creation of motorcycles.

The steering wheel, like everything else in this car, is typical, classic. It's not as big as cruisers, and not small like sports bikes. It was precisely these rudders that the old classical technology had. In appearance, he is, of course, inconspicuous. However, large mirrors with a characteristic antique shape give it a certain gloss.

The rear brakes are a single disc, accompanied by a single-piston caliper. The front brakes are also discs, but the caliper is already two-piston. These brakes are enough to keep the motorcycle well controlled. The comfortable steering wheel also contributes to excellent handling.

Appearance - everything is clear here. For lovers of the classics. The engine is the same as the TR250. The sound is low, beautiful)

I don’t know what they write in the specs about the mass, but it seemed lighter in feel than the ebrik on which I studied. The steering wheel is light - just like a bicycle! Personally, I (183/93) felt frankly cramped on it. In any case, on this fashionable single seat, but my wife wanted exactly this and it’s comfortable for her)

The ignition switch is located on the left under the tank. The steering column is locked separately. You can also use the same key to open the lock for attaching the helmet. But, unfortunately, there was no glove compartment.

Another disadvantage is that the choke has only 2 positions. Actually on and off. Fully extendable and latched, no intermediate positions. And there is no fuel gauge. But I was pleased with the presence of a central footrest.

This modification has disc brakes at the front and rear, but I haven’t tried them yet on the stiff tires. I’ll write back next season) But most likely they are more than enough for such a machine.

I recently became the proud owner of a Kawasaki Estrella. I didn’t delve into the technical characteristics of this device at all, I just figured that I could easily handle it, and that’s all, I mainly paid attention to the appearance (not in the sense that there is no rust, but most importantly - the silhouette - so that there is a normal motorcycle) . That’s how I bought it, and after riding it I was convinced of my good choice - an excellent motorcycle, holds the road, it’s not hard on the butt, it’s easy to control, the weight is about 150 kg. The maximum speed is probably 110 km/h (120 on the speedometer), but I haven’t driven more than 100, to be honest, I don’t know how to drive fast and don’t want to, I’m in no hurry. The gas tank is 14 liters, and I refuel after 280 km (still a reserve remains). Pulls well at low end. The headlight is bright. In general - I like it! Especially good for beginners, or “dummies”, like me. There may be some downsides, but they don't bother me. Moreover, I've been waiting for it for so long!

History of changes

The bike, of course, went through several stages in its development, which was difficult not to do during a twenty-five-year career:

  • 1992 – start of production;
  • 1995 – RS modification appeared;
  • 1996 – the Custom version was created;
  • 2007 – the second generation comes out, but versions except the regular one disappear;
  • 2017 is the last year of production.

This motorcycle will forever remain in the memory of people who respect retro classics in motorcycle construction. Kawasaki's Estrella embodies the best of these bikes.
