600 cc motorcycles: for those who are ready to tame the iron horse

Everyone who prefers motorcycles, sooner or later, will think about how to get a bike that has the character and soul of a wild mustang. Naturally, even beginners dream about this, but in fact, not everyone is ready to drive a model whose power reaches 100 hp. After all, 125 cc models are very convenient and comfortable to drive, 250 cc models are not much different from them, but 600 cc motorcycles are already models that require a special attitude and experience of a biker with confident driving. A mistake while driving can cost your life, so be careful and try not to be a hero on the road.

Triumph Daytone 600

The British, after a cool attitude towards the TT 600 model, created Daytone. And like the previous model, it looked a bit like the CBR F4, so the Daytona is a completely new styling direction. The bike has definitely benefited from the aggressiveness, with a dynamically designed chess set up at the front with big lights, a nicely carved tank and a nice tail. The new Triumph motorcycle was slightly faster than its predecessor and it performed quite well - it combined sporting aspirations with comfort similar to what we know from the CBR. The Daytona's engine produces 112 hp and its work culture has improved significantly. Top speed hovers at 250 km/h.

Fun fact: The Daytona 650 was created in 2005 and was on the market for just one year.

Minuses? The cockpit is a little worse than Japanese motorcycles, the motorcycle is not very popular, so it is difficult to hunt for cool art. But it is also more competitively priced than Japanese designs.

Engine power126 l. With. at 13500 rpm
Brake systemDisc hydraulic
Suspensions (front; rear)Inverted telescopic fork; pendulum with monoshock absorber

The distinctive features of the motorcycle are a powerful engine, reliable suspension, and an effective braking system. The 600 cc engine is capable of delivering more than 120 horsepower to the motorcyclist, accelerating the vehicle to 250 km/h. Despite the fact that the model is more intended for racing, it has also found its application in urban environments. Small dimensions and weight made it possible to quickly move between the aisles of endless traffic jams. Disc brakes improve the handling of the motorcycle, giving the rider confidence.

The fuel tank measures 17 liters and does not always meet the owners’ travel expectations. For example, when driving quickly in a mixed cycle, a full tank lasts for 250–300 km, which significantly reduces the chances of long trips. The aggressive and ergonomic shape of the motorcycle combined with interesting colored plastic makes the model memorable and impressive.

Honda CBR 600 F4i

The CBR 600 F4i is the least sporty bike on our list today - it's the only one with a full bench - although F4 fans can also buy the S version, which is sportier looking and a kilo lighter.

The CBR engine gives us 109bhp of power and is one of those engines on which Honda has built its reputation for reliable motorcycles. Yes, you can complain about the timing belt tensioner or voltage regulator - but these are minor things. There are a lot of good things to say about these engines and machines because many people choose these devices to perform their stunts.

Don't be fooled by the convenient layout of the controls - the F4i, as befits a sports segment, can accelerate to 250 km/h. The motorcycle is also ideal for everyday use, it is not afraid of motorways, as well as exits to the track - although it is not specifically made for riding. This fact did not prevent Honda from conquering the market, and currently among the used cars is CBR'ki brylują.

In one company store they told me a tragicomic story. Someone came to a hall where powerful motorcycles are sold and began to take a closer look at the “over-liter athlete.”

The sellers, out of the goodness of their hearts, decided to give the buyer some advice, since they themselves had plenty of experience with similar equipment and even had certain sporting achievements. However, the potential motorcycle owner said that he had enough experience; he once drove a Czechoslovakian Jawa “like a hurricane.” They gave him a counterargument: they say, a little over 20 and 175 hp. - “two big differences.” Unfortunately, there was no proper reaction...

Soon a specific sound of a running engine was heard from the street, and two or three seconds later a terrible howl, a terrible roar and monstrous swearing were heard. The following happened. About thirty meters from the entrance to the salon there was a hefty advertising stand. The driver, apparently, was going to take off beautifully and dash off onto the main road, but... did not calculate either his strength or the strength of the motorcycle and, at a speed of about 50 km/h, drove straight into an indestructible advertising object. When the smoke cleared, as they say in the novels, observers saw an absolutely intact cabinet, a dented driver and a broken motorcycle (repairs cost the owner approximately $3,500).

Moral: before you saddle a liter (or more) horse intended for sport, you need to prepare: study at a special school (they are available in any big city), or start with a less formidable “athlete”. If you choose gradual learning from your bruises and bumps (option No. 2), turn your attention to the representatives of the 600 cc clan with a power of about 100 hp. Firstly, they are cheaper than their more serious counterparts. Secondly, they are a little lighter and don’t jump out from under your feet so quickly. Thirdly, it is somewhat smaller in size and easier to manage.

Today, there is an unspoken war going on among the serial “athletes” of the so-called middle class. One of its main reasons was the surge in sales in Europe of motorcycles with 600 cm3 engines in the Sport, Naked and Sporttouring classes. This is due both to taxation and to the fact that many women of the Old World are happy to use such motorcycles as their main means of transportation.

One of the best 600 cc “sportsmen” is the Yamaha YZF-R6. Not having the highest torque, the engine of this monster produces 120 hp at 13,000 min-1. With. There is also a 98-horsepower modification, which is exactly what you need for the first steps. The motorcycle accelerates to “hundreds” in 3.1 seconds. And with such advantages, you can buy it for only 9660 euros (in Europe, of course).

A little more moderate is the English Triumph TT 600, available in versions with 108, 98 and 34 horsepower. It has excellent weight distribution and is very comfortable to drive even at top speeds. The maximum speed of the most powerful modification is 250 km/h, acceleration to hundreds takes 3.4 seconds.

Kawa develops the "Ninja" theme. The Ninja ZX-6R model with a 636 cc engine is somewhat cheaper, but in the top version it produces 113 horsepower. There are 98 and 34 hp options. The model is one of the “best selling” in Central Europe due to the fact that the driver of this motorcycle is in the most comfortable conditions. This is Kawasaki's policy - convenience above all else.

Honda's 109-horsepower six-hundred-cc "athlete" is called the CBR 600 F (the Sport version differs mainly in appearance), "shoots" from zero to a hundred in 3.1 seconds and accelerates to 255 km/h. The motorcycle differs from its competitors in its confident traction at low speeds and good handling. Here, perhaps, are all the main 600cc sports cars on which you can learn. To comprehend the science of management, they are suitable both in second hand condition and “brand new, brand new”. The latter, of course, are more expensive.

In fact, you can train on almost any powerful motorcycle with an engine of this size, be it a “sport tourer” or a “naked bike”. There are a lot of them. However, the above models belong to the “pure sport” category and allow you to master the driving style of a real sports motorcycle.

Kawasaki ZX6R

In 2000, the new Kawasaki ZX6R debuted - finally, one might say, because the old model was already outdated. The new version was stylistically reminiscent of the ZX9R and 12-tke, more than the current Golf Passat. It offered the same power as the Triumph, but the character of the machine was decidedly more aggressive, with the Kawasaki being more assertive when accelerating, having longer gears, better brakes and a decidedly sportier stance.

In 2003, the first version of the 636 debuted, still in the old barn but with a completely new engine, increasing power to around 120 hp. At the moment this is a really cool motorcycle at a reasonable price. Of course, you should be careful to buy a model that has been properly treated and has not been used in tricks.

Suzuki GSXR 600 K1-k3

At the same time as Kawasaki, the new 600 cm Gixxer class debuted. The Suzuki engine produces 115 hp, propelling the car to 263 km/h. Despite its oval shape, the GSX-R is a lighter design than the CBR by as much as 7 kg.

The GSX-R, like the Kawasaki, gives us a tight, sporty stance at the controls. The long and cracked tank forces us to lean over, and the windshield does a pretty good job of blocking the wind. Suzuki sport bikes are considered classic sports bikes that are capable of much - if maintained correctly.

History of modifications

  • 1992 – start of production of the first models with an engine power of 98 hp. With.
  • 1997 - the plastic covering of the motorcycle is changed, the weight is reduced by more than 30 kg, and a new engine is installed.
  • 2001 - power increases to 123 hp. s., the weight is reduced by 8 kg, and the appearance changes again.
  • 2004 - an inverted adjustable telescopic fork, new suspension (rear) and brakes are installed on the model.
  • 2006 - the gsxr 600 gets a completely new engine.
  • 2008 - plastic and fuel tank design, as well as other changes.
  • 2011 – the motorcycle’s dashboard is updated, the weight loss is 4 kg, and a new fork with sports calipers appears.

Yamaha R6

The king of motorcycles from the golden period of the sport, the 600 series. The Yamaha R6 debuted in 1999 and immediately created a frenzy in the womb, even among the male group. A beautiful, light, compact and very sharp sports car. The halls were buzzing - Yamaha had done a great job and this period was undoubtedly theirs.

The R6, although slightly heavier than the Gixx, offered 5 hp more. more, he loved to take turns and roared at the same time as in rage. To achieve this, it has an excellent braking system and good suspension.

The best 600cc sports motorcycles

Master a sports bike without harming yourself and others, without being left behind liter beauties, or just confidently move around the city - there are some 600 cc models that will allow you to do this.

They are well-known to many, have excellent characteristics and an impeccable reputation:

  • Honda CBR 600 RR is a seven-time champion in the Supersport category, the owner of a 4-cylinder engine and a 6-speed transmission. Give it 3 seconds and it will accelerate to hundreds. The CBR 600 RR was produced from 1987 to 2008, gradually increasing power. So the latest releases demonstrate what 118 hp is capable of.

  • Suzuki GSX-R600 is an “athlete”, accelerating up to 259 km/h. Externally, it is practically no different from its “big brother” GSX-R1000. The 600th “Jixer” has the same broken shapes and daring design. Equipped with a 4-cylinder engine that will require 6 liters of gasoline for every 100 km.

  • Yamaha YZF-R6 is the legendary “Japanese” that continues to improve. The latest version rolled off the assembly line in 2022 and pleased fans with improved aerodynamics, new ABS and traction control. Acceleration to 100 km takes 3 seconds, and the top speed is 260 km/h. The YZF-R6 excels in tight corners and is a three-time world champion in the Supersport category for good reason.

These “athletes” have repeatedly proven that they are the best, both on the race track and on the road. They are ideal for both professionals and those who continue to improve their driving technique.

Which 600cc motorcycle is good for a beginner?

With comfort and no surprises - these are the requirements that novice motorcyclists make when purchasing. Typically, this behavior is expected from small-capacity equipment. As for 600 cc motorcycles, according to experienced bikers and instructors, they are the limit for a beginner, and then only some not the most aggressive models:

  • Honda Hornet CB 600 is a comfortable and stylish bike with a sports CBR 600 engine, a 6-speed gearbox and 102 horsepower. It is somewhat inferior in characteristics to its sports brother, but it listens perfectly to a rider, even one who is not very experienced.

  • Yamaha FZ6 - like the previous model, at its heart lies the derated engine of its sports brother, in this case the YZF-R6. Suitable for both sports and tourism. It has laconic, streamlined shapes.

Road Chinese 600 cc motorcycles - a rational choice

If you want to save money and buy a bike purely for the city, you can choose a motorcycle from Chinese road builders. Pay attention to these models:

  • Stels 600 Benelli is “Chinese” with Italian roots. At one time, the European brand was bought by a company from the Middle Kingdom. The result is a series of bikes with a modern design. The owners of this model have at their disposal 80 hp, a 6-speed gearbox, a 4-cylinder engine, which in practice turns into an obedient city bike.

  • The CFMoto 650 NK is an easy-to-ride, powerful road bike that accelerates to 180 km/h. It is based on a 2-cylinder engine. The model is quite comfortable, suitable for both boys and girls who want to quickly and noticeably move between rows of cars.

Road

From chopper drivers you can often hear the contemptuous “less than a liter is not a chopper,” and this point of view can be understood. This class of steel horses almost always uses deformed V-shaped 2-cylinder engines, low-speed and high-torque, so they need a large volume to achieve sane power. For this reason, bikes with engines of one and a half liters or more are popular, and “six hundred” are considered equipment for beginners. The most popular common representatives of this category are the Honda Steed 600 and Yamaha XVS 650 Drag Star. The Suzuki LS650 Savage is much less popular, and Kawasaki has never had a cruiser in this segment. It is worth noting that the above-mentioned Hondas and Yamahas are built on the same platform as their 400 cc counterparts, and differ from them mainly only by the CPG. Suzuki Savage, on the other hand, stands somewhat apart, and differs from its 400 cc counterpart not only in its engine, but also in its belt drive instead of a chain drive.

HONDA

Among the mass of motorcycles that Honda offers today, we get from the “classic six hundred” models CBF600SA and CB600FA Hornet. Unlike the well-known “CB” of the 90s, the new generation can be called “highly advanced”, although the legendary handling of the previous CBs still remains unsurpassed; it’s not for nothing that in many motorcycle schools abroad you can often still find CBs in the role of the educational apparatus. What is attractive about motorcycles in this series today? Handling, which even a neophyte will seem “primitive” and safe, but at the same time, even the elder will find a lot of tasty things in these motorcycles, mainly thanks to the engine and suspension.

CB600 Hornet

The motor is approximately the same, but the power and torque are increased. Refers to nikes, that is, “naked.” But, in principle, it is suitable for both the city and the highway. The “push and push” of the engine, as well as a rigid frame and good brakes make this motorcycle desirable for those who like to ride fast in different conditions.

Suzuki

If we talk about Suzuki, then you can’t do without the “Bandit”, although the displacement here exceeds 600 cubic meters, almost the volume of a scooter’s engine, which can be driven without a license. The engines of this motorcycle, which can be bought from us in the GSF650SA and GSF650A versions, have a glorious pedigree and no less decent external characteristics. Good torque and maximum power, coupled with a good frame and suspension, also allow it to be used both as a city motorcycle (Street) and as a space eater on the highway.

Yamaha

Yamaha XJ6 Diversion © Photo: Yamaha

In the class of road motorcycles, Yamaha positions us with three models at once. This, oddly enough, is VMax (a separate song in terms of the classification of this motorcycle, which dates back to the previous model of the 1980s), as well as FZ1, FZ8 and XJ6. Today we are only interested in the 600 cc XJ6 model, also known as “Diversion”. We sell it in two versions, like many “classics” from other manufacturers - with and without a body kit. The body kit is quite conventional compared to sports models, but it is quite enough to feel good at high speeds.

Yamaha XJ6 Diversion © Photo: Yamaha

The controllability of the XJ6 allows it to be successfully used by both beginners and motorcycle elders, because for a neophyte it is simple, but for an experienced driver it allows them to unlock their full potential and race well if desired. Good torque, a comfortable fit and a good seat allow you to use the XJ6 not only for short distances, but also for long distances. The bike handles well and has enough comfort to keep you feeling fresh after a long ride. In short, the XJ6 is a good choice both as a first motorcycle and as a daily vehicle for those who are already tired of the nervousness of “sports”.

600cc road bikes

So, you are not interested in motorsports, but you want to have a modern motorcycle for driving around the city, with a powerful enough engine so as not to remain behind the traffic flow. In this case, it’s worth taking a look at the “classics” and 600 cc motorcycles can offer the following choice:

  • Honda CBF600, or more specifically, the simple CB600FA and the Hornet subtype. This is a fairly heavily modified and improved generation of the “C-Bihi”, well known to all bikers of the 90s. Moreover, the control remains just as convenient, one might even say unsurpassed (after all, it is not without reason that this motorcycle is used as a teaching aid in almost all motorcycle schools in the world). And this is completely justified for a road bike - almost “primitive” control, which allows you to quickly master the basics of riding and safely move on the roads at the required speed (experienced pilots will appreciate both the suspension of the new models and the powerful engine). In terms of filling, it is an in-line engine with 4 pistons, with a torque of 60 Nm, and high-quality liquid cooling. The suspension can withstand even a very well-fed pilot, and also shows excellent handling even on our roads;

  • Suzuki Bandit - this model is the key one from the manufacturer. Its working volume is already more than 600 cubic meters, which increases power and allows the model to be used on the highway, and not just in the city. The Suzuki Bandit S modification is also suitable for city dwellers who sometimes go out of town. It is a kind of compromise between a sportbike and a classic, and the existing plastic body kit provides good aerodynamic characteristics on the highway without interfering in dense city traffic;

  • Yamaha XJ6 Diversion - presented in several versions (classic without a body kit and with it, despite the fact that it is quite conventional, but suitable for confident driving at high speeds). It has excellent responsive handling, which is suitable even for inexperienced bikers. Well, experienced pilots, by the way, will be able to reveal their potential as racers. It features a comfortable fit and a comfortable seat, which is extremely important for long trips. And this is one of the best options for a first motorcycle in this “weight” category or for those who are tired of the aggressive behavior of sports models;

  • Kawasaki ER6 - also available with or without body kit. Its predecessor is the ER5, which is characterized by simplicity and confident handling, a high level of comfort and a truly unusual design. What is really quite interesting is that it is extremely comfortable for a biker of any height. It has a balanced suspension and a high-power motor, so it will provide ease of use not only in the city, but also outside it. One of the useful abilities is to easily pass winding roads, but it is better not to drive on broken roads, because the suspension may not withstand it.

As a result, if you want to use 600 cc monsters in urban conditions, you have to choose from the same Japanese models. These bikes are of high quality and can provide pleasure to a pilot of any size and regardless of gender (since you do not have to exert excessive physical force to control).

It is also important to understand that the classic bike is a universal motorcycle. This is something between low-power city and high-speed sports models. Of course, more “nimble” models have been developed specifically for the city, but they are less powerful and do not correspond to motorcycles with a 600 cc engine. Not to mention the fact that as the volume decreases, the power and, therefore, the speed decreases. By the way, today classic motorcycles can be called “road” or “city”, and each manufacturer (and even more so each seller) positions these models differently.
