- motorcycle model, Yamaha brand,
The Yamaha XVS 950 Midnight Star cruiser model was first introduced in 2009 as a junior replacement for the Yamaha XVS 1100 Drag Star (in 2008, the XVS1100 grew into the XVS1300), and is still sold today. On the American market, this model is called the Yamaha V-Star 950. The model positions itself as a cruiser for entry-level and mid-level drivers. Having full-size dimensions, the motorcycle is very similar to the older version of the Yamaha XV1900, which is also an advantage and takes away the feeling of owning a cheap small-capacity version of the older model.
The motorcycle was based on a 2-cylinder V-shaped air-cooled engine with a volume of 942 cc. see, producing 54 hp. power and 77 Nm of torque. Maximum motor performance is from 3000 to 6000 rpm. This engine was subsequently installed on the Yamaha XV950 Bolt model, which appeared in 2013.
Analyzing the Yamaha XVS 950, one immediately notices Yamaha's desire to release another cruiser for the American market. This can be seen not only from the motorcycle’s Harley-like style and layout (air cooling, belt), but also from the nature of the engine. Firstly, the engine does not have balancer shafts. Secondly, to emphasize the vibration and enhance the feeling of each impulse, the beginnings of the working strokes are spaced 300° and 420°. It is clear that for the European market such “technologies” are at least not an advantage, but for sales of this class of equipment in the USA this is necessary.
Features of the Midnight Star 950 (V-Star 950) include a traditional steel duplex frame, simple suspension in the form of a telescopic fork and monoshock absorber, disc brakes, fuel injection, 5-speed gearbox, belt drive, 17 liter fuel tank and 278 kg curb weight .
Around the city and on trips
This “iron horse” is suitable for some purposes and for others.
For example, in dense city traffic, this motorcycle feels confident, like any other vehicle of this class. There are no problems even in the presence of many kilometers of traffic jams during rush hour. Consumption in the city is approximately 7 liters of 95 gasoline. A cruiser is also ideal for long-distance travel. Driving it on the highway is a real pleasure, especially if it is tuned with everything necessary.
He is not even bothered by the presence of a passenger of average weight (about 60 kg) and substantial luggage in addition. It drives dynamically and overtakes quickly. Consumption in this mode is approximately 5.5 liters.
For this motorcycle, the optimal cruising speed for the highway is 120-140 km/h. But only if with glass. Without it, the wind begins to irritate faster. Other stressing factors appear at a speed of 150 km/h. This refers to vibrations on the footpegs and steering wheel.

Warm atmosphere
The new product received a time-tested 942 cc “air” V-twin with a cylinder angle of 60°, which is equipped with the XVS950 cruiser, sold in the USA under the name V-Star 950. In the version of the Bolt model, the power plant was slightly updated, although the main characteristics of the engine remained the same the same: Japanese engineers limited themselves to reconfiguring the intake and exhaust systems, and also changed the “firmware” of the control unit.
The result of all the manipulations was a slight increase in engine performance - mainly in the low and medium speed zone, where true bobber lovers “live”. As befits a motor of this class, the power plant of the new Yamaha product has excellent traction characteristics, which are expressed in the absolute indifference of the engine in which gear and what speed to accelerate the motorcycle.
Traditionally, for derated V-twins, the maximum engine power is one and a half times less than the torque: 52 hp. With. and 80 Nm. In general, the bobber engine does not stand out in any way.
The Yamaha engine is a rare and pleasant exception to the rule: it is clear that not only engineers, but also designers worked on this power plant! The only foreign element in the harmonious appearance of the model is a large and unsightly muffler, which also probably weighs as much as half the engine...
I was pleasantly surprised by the operation of the gearbox: Japanese engineers improved the clutch mechanism, which increased the clarity of the gearbox compared to how the transmission functions on the XVS950 cruiser. The gears are engaged precisely in German style, the “neutral” position is unmistakable - even when the motorcycle is standing still and you have to click through all five gearbox stages to reach neutral gear.
I would characterize the well-chosen gear ratios with the word “urban”: the first three stages of the transmission are short and help the not very large and productive engine to easily “drag” an almost 250-kilogram device at a low speed under pressure, which is especially in demand when driving around a metropolis.
And fourth and fifth gears are for highway driving, where the Bolt easily maintains cruising and most comfortable 120 km/h without the need to increase engine speed. Despite the fact that the engine of the new Yamaha is cooled exclusively by air flow and is not even equipped with an oil cooler, during the entire trip across the United States, the V-twin bobber, bristling with developed cylinder fins, never gave reason to complain about a particularly “warm atmosphere” behind the wheel.
At the same time, on the endless plains of Arizona, the air temperature rose above 30 ° C, and on the approach to Los Angeles our group had to weave for about an hour in a sluggish stream of cars, stopping at countless traffic lights every 100 m...
It is impossible not to write a couple of lines about the sound of the engine and the level of vibration of the 942 cc V-twin, since for fans of this type of technology this topic is sacred. To my taste, the Yamaha engine, devoid of balance shafts and rigidly fixed in the frame, equipped with a 2-in-1 exhaust system, has complete order with both, although orthodox fans of “vibration stands” may think that “it won’t be enough.”
However, these characters are unlikely to pay attention to the XV950 at all, since they traditionally deify exclusively American-made equipment from the times when John Kennedy won the US presidential election
General description of the motorcycle
The 21st century is becoming less and less diverse every day.
Cars, gadgets, social networks - everything becomes the same and banal.
Back in the 2000s, the motorcycle industry was constantly riveting similar models that were so similar to each other that only a true fan could tell them apart. Is it really still going on like this? No!
The Yamaha Bolt Star XV 950 is something special. The model was developed by professionals from Yamaha's American subsidiary, Star Motorcycles.
First of all, the creators set out to create a bike that was susceptible to changes and tuning, and only then worked on the idea of a bobber.
First of all, what we see is an urban-type bobber, with a compact and short body.
The motorcycle is equipped with wavy brake discs and a new instrument panel that allows you to view the data even in bright sunlight.
Star Motorcycles has created a catalog with parts and other elements of the bike, from which everyone can build something of their own.
Advantages and disadvantages
This model has only just reached us, but in the West, the XVS950 has existed in its original form for several years.
We received a ready-made and full-fledged product, which was brought to its current state for a long time and persistently.
Among the advantages:
- A tribute to style (not taking into account wings, mirrors and the presence of other details);
- Discreet and strict appearance;
- Huge possibilities for modification;
- Performs well on long journeys (on roads);
- The bike has acquired character (ideal “live” vibrations, almost intuitive controls suitable for beginners, and a clear difference from its competitors);
- Small size allows women to easily cope with the “iron horse”.
The Yamaha Bolt 950 motorcycle is perfect as a first experience, since, despite all its “iron and muscularity,” the controls are intuitive.
However, there are several disadvantages:
- The model is equipped with very low running boards, which constantly scratch on the asphalt when turning (especially on our roads);
- Moderate dimensions are not suitable for people accustomed to large, spreading choppers;
- The bolt is also not suitable for people with greater height/weight;
- Not designed for high speeds.
The appearance of the motorcycle is very streamlined. There are no elements that would interfere with pressing your legs to the motorcycle, so unity with the unit is created.
In addition to the developer catalog, there are also aftermarket studios.
There, from a simple factory animal, they will make whatever you want. After all, no one wants to drive around in a banal “tin can” (if such a phrase is even applicable to the Yamaha Bolt).
Adherents of the steampunk style can create an entourage image of early modernization.
What do the owners say?
According to the description of those who have been driving such a car for a long time, it is reliable, convenient and unpretentious in maintenance. It’s easy to get spare parts, and such a need arises infrequently. You can repair it yourself, but if you don’t have confidence in your own skills, it’s easy to find a professional to repair such bikes.
Reviews about the dynamics are generally positive. Almost none of the owners consider the model to be too weak or too powerful. And this is perhaps the best compliment for a representative of the cruiser class. Many people recommend this bike as a car for traveling, including from one locality to another.
In various reviews, in video and photo format, the style in which this technique is made is noted. The design appeals to everyone who prefers modern cruisers. On the other hand, those who are accustomed to representatives of this class of the old era sometimes express displeasure with the appearance of the motorcycle, as well as with today's trends in general.
They note that the car, like other classmates, is not capable of moving off-road. Or rather, she is able to do it, but the consequences will be critical. For those who want to purchase heavy equipment for rough terrain, enduro and touring enduro are unanimously recommended.
In conclusion, it is worth noting that the Yamaha XVS 950 Midnight Star will be of interest to cruiser connoisseurs for a long time. This is a modern motorcycle that has not yet lost those properties for which many people fell in love with representatives of the class of a bygone era. That's why perhaps this model will one day be called a classic.
Yamaha XVS950A
Largest volume and air cooling. Further - even better: there are hard cases and the option of a quick-release windshield (although original accessories sell for crazy money). It would seem difficult to get closer to the ideal. And the blue version, sparkling in the sun, is generally difficult to ignore :).
The main disadvantage is the very low ground clearance, as a result of which everyone complains about “scratching” the footpegs on the asphalt. In principle, nothing terrible, especially since the legs have replaceable “scratchers” for “particularly gifted active” drivers, but still the moment remains unpleasant. By the way, by the way, I liked the 950 even more than the 1300 (the steering wheel is not so bent).
One of the neutral points is the belt. This may be the “right choice,” but it still confuses me.
Purely outwardly, at some point I was touched by a clearly defined frame, which in front juts out too obviously like a triangle. But here you either like it or not. There is no third. After I noticed it constantly hurts.
For absolutely subjective reasons like “Yamaha again” ;), it is placed in second place on the list of preferences.
Evening beer
The chassis of the Yamaha XV950 is unpretentious and absolutely within the genre: a new steel duplex frame developed specifically for this model, a non-adjustable telescopic fork with feathers with a diameter of 41 mm and a pendulum rear suspension with two simple shock absorbers. With all the primitivism of the chassis, the Japanese bobber does not seem like an uncontrollable torpedo, but quite the opposite - it has surprisingly good maneuverability.
This, of course, is not a supermoto or even a “liter” naked, but if you want, you can drive the XV950 quickly - and many kilometers of traffic jams will not be a problem for the compact Yamaha Bolt. The format of a leisurely contemplative motorcycle trip across the United States did not imply testing equipment in extreme conditions, and therefore the story about the bobber's handling at high speed will have to be postponed until the motorcycle is tested in Russia.
However, riding the Yamaha XV950 through the winding serpentines of California and Arizona at a comfortable 90 km/h was as pleasant and peaceful as a glass of cold beer savored on the open-air terrace of a bar overlooking the Pacific Ocean. I think that a significant contribution to the excellent maneuverability for a vehicle of this class was made by the relatively narrow rear 16-inch wheel (150/80-R16), balanced weight distribution along the axles and a adjusted center of gravity, the correct location of which the Japanese engineers worked hard on.
Another pleasant discovery of this motorcycle is the surprisingly effective braking system, which is not at all typical for serial choppers, cruisers and other bobbers. For example, the front 2-piston caliper, which gently hugs the 298 mm petal-type disc, is sufficient in most typical driving situations.
This is not as little as we would like, but also not at all much when compared with its American competitor, especially considering the high quality of the XV950's workmanship and its decent driving characteristics. I repeat that there is no real alternative to Yamaha’s new product, at least among its Japanese competitors. Despite the fact that bobbers as a class are a niche product, the Bolt model has a good chance of becoming especially popular.

Yamaha Bolt
, aka
XV950CU
, is a relative newcomer to the Yamaha motorcycle lineup. Produced since 2014, this very interesting motorcycle has already gained popularity not only among bikers, but also among customizers who have chosen it as a donor for their masterpieces. Lightweight and maneuverable, the Bolt XV950CU is the ideological successor to the Yamaha Virago.
Despite the difference between the generations of these two motorcycles, the Yamaha Bolt really looks like an ideological successor to the good old Viraga. At one time, the latter was very popular, and this popularity was largely due to its undoubted advantages, such as maneuverability and lightness. The XV950CU can boast of the same advantages. Compact, with a short wheelbase, lightweight and maneuverable, the Bolt feels at home in city traffic. And it is capable of giving any motorcyclist a lot of pleasant emotions, flying out of the garage onto the night streets with the roar of an almost liter engine and frightening late passers-by with the bright white light of a stylish headlight.
The Yamaha Bolt engine comes from the Yamaha XVS 950 Midnight Star; it is a 53-horsepower air-cooled V-twin, traditionally for Yamaha choppers and cruisers. With a pleasantly smooth character and excellent traction in the lower rev range, this engine allows the motorcycle to accelerate very dynamically, provided that the biker changes gears in time, the first of which are quite short. The operation of the Yamaha Bolt gearbox, by the way, is close to ideal - clearly, without problems with finding neutral and without “false gears”.
In general, the XV950CU is a very technologically advanced motorcycle. Of course, cruisers are archaic by their very nature, but this bike boasts an excellent modern alloy frame, an aluminum swingarm, excellent suspension and an economical fuel injector. Drive - belt. The volume of the Yamaha Bolt gas tank is only 12 liters, but since during quiet driving on the highway the consumption is about five liters, this is enough.
However, this motorcycle was not created for long journeys, but for riding around the city and surrounding areas. Hence the general layout of the Yamaha Bolt, the modest-sized gas tank, and the appearance. Thanks to its modest dimensions, low center of gravity and low weight, this motorcycle handles perfectly and is very comfortable in the city.
But on the highway, its features turn into disadvantages - the XV950CU is sensitive to the side wind blowing it away, the gas tank, if you drive 130-140 km/h or faster, will empty quite quickly, and the narrow rear wheel and short wheelbase do not give it good straight line stability. And you can’t put a touring body kit on a bike - it will ruin the whole stylish appearance.
If we look at the Yamaha Bolt from the outside, we can safely say that everything in this motorcycle has been thought through - both the technical component and the appearance. Thanks to the light weight and low height of the saddle, even a fragile girl can handle the bike, comfortable driver's footpegs, noticeably placed forward, invite you to stretch your legs on them, and the handlebar is ideally located - only very short motorcyclists will have to reach for it.
Along with the Midnight Star 950, being Yamaha's most affordable cruiser, the Bolt is sold in many countries around the world, and is selling successfully. This medium-sized light cruiser, stylized as a bobber, looks great and in reality turns out to be at least no worse than on advertising posters.
Specifications
The engine here is not particularly productive by modern standards. However, a cruiser doesn’t need anything more powerful, because its beauty is not in its engine performance. The technical characteristics of this machine give a feeling comparable to the feeling of driving a large sea ship.

Front suspension | telescopic fork, 41 mm, travel 120 mm |
Rear brakes | single disc, 1-piston caliper, 298 mm |
Front brakes | single disc, 2-piston caliper, 298 mm |
Of course, there are disc brakes here. The drum version on such a hulk would be dangerous. The tubular steel frame suits the class perfectly. As for the drive, many will be pleased that it is a belt. After all, there will be no characteristic, unpleasant sounds for some that arise with other options.
Driving performance
The maximum speed, for a cruiser, is quite decent - 160 km/h . Users note that the bike performs well in the city too, not at all like a cruiser. Slip through the aisles, throw up like a pensioner , or race at the limit - whatever you want. But the bike has an extremely negative attitude towards extreme sports. For wheelies, stops, and trips on one wheel, you need to choose a different model.
Acceleration to hundreds
Acceleration from standstill to 100 km/h is 6 seconds , which is a very good result for such motorcycles.
Fuel consumption
Consumption, according to the developers, is 4.5 per 100 km . Considering that the tank is only 13 liters , the power reserve cannot be called large - 250 km .
Specifications
The engine is average. By modern standards, it is weak, but many do not consider this a minus, since for a cruiser, even for such a massive one, more is not needed. These bikes are not designed for high speeds; their element is to plow the asphalt expanses at a measured pace.
Motor type | V-shaped, 2 cylinders, 4 strokes |
Power | 54 l. With. |
Torque | 77 Nm |
Maximum speed | 154 km/h |
Acceleration to 100 | 6.51 s |
Fuel consumption per hundred | 4.6 l |
Drive unit | belt |
Transmission | five-speed |
Frame | tubular steel |
Rear suspension | pendulum, monoshock absorber, stroke 110 mm |
Front suspension | telescopic fork, 41 mm, travel 135 mm |
Rear brakes | single disc, 298 mm, 1-piston caliper |
Front brakes | single disc, 320 mm, 2-piston caliper |
The good thing is that there is no longer a drum brake at the rear, but a disc one. This increases safety and reduces the likelihood of repairs. However, you still need to check the functionality of the brakes and other parts of the car. It is also worth noting that there is a belt drive here. Thanks to this circumstance, there will be no unpleasant sounds that are inevitable with other transmission options.

Engine
The Yamaha XVS 950 Midnight Star model has a V-shaped 2-cylinder engine equipped with an air cooling system. Its volume is 942 cubic meters. cm, and the power is 54 liters. With. Maximum performance – from 3000 to 6000 rpm.
This is a really worthy unit. In the era of Japanese cruisers, most of which are simply “refined”, the famous concern was not afraid to create a real “aircraft” motor.
And the lack of liquid cooling is not the only outstanding quality of the engine
Fans note the “clicking” of cooling metal, which is so important for a true motorcyclist, heard in those moments when after riding you put your “iron horse” in the box. They say that even the smell from the engine is different, not similar to the aroma from water-cooled units
Appearance
The Yamaha XVS 950 Midnight Star looks bright. This is achieved through a combination of chrome elements, black and light gray colors. There is a pattern on the gas tank and rear fender. The headlight is elongated and small in diameter. In addition, it is straight in shape, and not increasing anteriorly, as is usually customary.
The wheels are alloy, but have a specific, rare shape. The pattern is different on the front and back. The light colors of the frame make it visually even more massive than it actually is. That's why this motorcycle is perhaps one of the largest looking cruisers. Although physically he is smaller than many.
General impressions
In the reviews left about the Yamaha XVS 950 you can find a variety of impressions. To summarize, it is worth highlighting the most common positive comments:
The motorcycle is reliable; breakdowns are rare even on models with impressive mileage. You don’t need a lot of money for consumables and operation, so this is a fairly budget option. The Yamaha XVS 950 belt gives excellent dynamics at the speeds that are basic for this motorcycle, as well as a smooth start. It lasts a long time and requires almost no maintenance. The motorcycle has a pleasant bass exhaust
This is important for connoisseurs. The low center of gravity ensures easy steering. Installed alloy wheels are much more practical than spokes. And the individual drawing is pleasing to the eye. There is a lot of supposedly “chrome” in appearance
For the most part, it's all plastic, but the motorcycle weighs less and is easier to care for. Chrome is more of a hassle. The equipment is decent - a windshield, panniers, a passenger backrest... everything is included in the basic version. But many recommend installing arches. It's practical and safe. The programs are quite long, including the first one. This will take some time to get used to. And when driving around the city, in acceleration and deceleration mode, you need to choose the gear wisely in order to maintain smooth dynamics. Shifts are accompanied by the characteristic Yamaha sound, and neutral is easily caught in any direction. Although the brakes are weak, and there is no ABS, the motorcyclists found a way out. You can block the wheels by sending the Yamaha sliding.
And, of course, no one ignores the appearance of this motorcycle in their reviews. Connoisseurs describe it as follows: modern trends in style, strung on a traditional cruiser base
However, there are also disadvantages
There are not very many of them, but motorcycle owners note:
- The injector does not like low-quality gasoline. The engine starts to “sneeze” and the motorcycle starts to run poorly. So it is not recommended to save on fuel.
- There is no emergency light. There are only turn signals. There is also no usual “blinker”.
- There is no sensor showing the fuel level indicator. There is only a light that blinks when there are 3 liters left in the tank.
- The mirror settings are very confusing. We have to remove them in the winter so that the device does not take up much space in the garage. But in the spring it’s difficult to set them up after this.
- The footrests, although comfortable, are located low. Many motorcyclists complain that they get caught on everything.
- The seating position is also comfortable. But if you don’t notice a pothole or bump on the road, it will immediately be felt on your back. Plus air resistance at speed. So installing a driver's backrest suggests itself.
I’m telling you about my first New Year’s trip around the city, about my first vivid impressions. Well, mainly about how and what I chose from.
It so happened that I spent the last couple of years without a horse. Periodically, I rented a BMW F800R from a friend for a ride for trips to the dacha in Sergiev Posad, and just around the city and to work. At the same time, I started driving a two-year-old girl, who quickly liked this business and from time to time I even received requests on the topic “let’s go for a ride.” True, she tried to put the helmet on backwards a couple of times (she says that she just got it wrong, but I suspect that she would have been less scared the first time), but women and their motorcycle equipment are a completely separate issue.
So, at the end of 2022, I decided it was time for me to get myself a new horse. But you always want something new and the agony of choice began. I must say that before I was somehow more worried about the fact that I might take something wrong, what if he didn’t go, what if it would be inconvenient, etc. This time I decided that comfort and ease of control, including with a valuable load on my shoulders, were my priorities. That’s why my favorite sports and nakeds weren’t even considered this time. And since long-distance trips finally appeared in the plans, tourists (tourists too) and cruisers were considered as the target. At the same time, no matter how much I fantasize about travel, 90% of the movement will be in the city. In total, you need a relatively maneuverable, fairly powerful and unpretentious device. These initially included:
Yamaha Trace / BMW gs800 BMW r1200rt Indian Scout Kawasaki / Honda / Yamaha different cruisers that I didn’t have the slightest idea about when I started searching.
I considered the Tracer and GS800 solely as a universal means of transportation for all occasions. But from the point of view of aesthetics and convenience for two, they were not suitable. I've never ridden them, but decided not to consider them.
I went to motorcycle dealerships and looked at BMW RT. Motik fire is one of the best options for long-range shooters, apparently. But the width of the fairing and the general external bulkiness for the city confused me. Yes, I already had a sports tourist before, they are somewhat similar. It is clear that it is not very correct to compare with the VFR800, but the fit has something in common. Well, in general, doubts crept in and I decided not to rush.
I have never come across an Indian Scout from a used one; sitting on a new one means you have to go to the dealer, it was lazy. And there aren't very many reviews about it. They say that it seems like a new design, but technologically it’s from the 90s. It’s difficult to find, it was somehow incomprehensible to me to order from the USA and I was afraid, I don’t know anyone who does it or even brought it. In general, Scout fell off.
On one of these trips, I basically accidentally sat on a Yamaha XVS650. AND…. and that’s it, a man has disappeared) How convenient it is, it’s simply unrealistic. The girl sat in the back and immediately said that this type of motorcycle was suitable for us. Yes, at that time I had already come to this conclusion myself, so there is no need to la-la in advance about the fact that a woman chose a motorcycle for me :) After the XVS, I was “offended” by a dozen or two other cruisers, but such a feeling of “mine” did not come . It should be noted that I have always been very respectful of Yamahas, since the days of my near-sports exercises on motorcycles. For example, on the track, the R6 and R1 were the most popular and most beloved bikes in the team (not counting one Kawasaki, which was assembled by the engineers of the Sofuglu team and it somehow ended up in our access and we even rode it a couple of times. But this is from a different series ). Again, in terms of endurance and motocross, the only bikes that I liked besides KTM / Husqvarna were again Yamaha. Well, in general, I fitted the fins to my nose and began to study the XVS line in more detail. Along the way, I found out that the XVS 650 and XVS 1100 are the previous models, which were replaced by the XVS 950 / 1300. That is, the XVS 950 is a more recent design, they added an injector and replaced the cardan with a belt. To me, frankly speaking, both the cardan and the belt were absolutely purple, I still didn’t ride either one. For me, an injector is generally the norm; carb ones were only two-stroke evil motocross racers. But they caused me despondency and horror for the reason that I don’t know how to cook them. Again, this logic (or rather, its absence) may seem strange, but for me it was more of an association and it worked in favor of the injector.
I went to motorcycle dealerships again, this time looking specifically at XVSs. 650 and 1100 in bulk costs in every store. The bikes are really very comfortable for my size (height 175, weight 75). I especially like the steering wheel and seats on them. The emphasis under the tailbone is definitely a topic. It adds many times more comfort (which I later personally verified on my own personal motorcycle). But on the stock XVS 950, the seat is not so prominent and did not evoke any special positive emotions in me. I really liked the weight distribution right away. It is still a little different from the 650 and 1100. The XVS 1300 seemed a little big to me (well, after sports, you understand)) and somehow I don’t really imagine myself riding it in a city traffic jam. Definitely experienced cruiser drivers in the city, and even at the gymkhana they do what they can on such big bikes... they do whatever they want, I’ve personally seen this many times. But I’m not like that, I don’t know how and I’ve never even ridden one like this. And I don’t seem to need more power. At that time I thought “I’ll throw up a little on the highway if anything happens, but for the city a liter will definitely be enough.”
Thus, I decided on the model. I will have XVS950. The only question left is where to get it. As of the end of November 2022, there were about 10 of them in Moscow motorcycle showrooms. The result of the inspection as a whole was disappointing - almost all of the “showroom” ones were half dead or in a sad state. A couple of times I saw openly assembled ones from pieces of other motorcycles (I believe they were brought from insurance auctions in the USA). Moreover, in the advertisements they write that “the technical condition is perfect, almost new” and so on. It's all nonsense. I’m far from a mechanic, but I’ve had a variety of jobs done many times, and I can tell some things by their appearance. In general, I didn’t find a single one that I would want to buy. Then I decided to see what they were bringing from Japan. There is one well-known company in Moscow that deals with this business professionally. I contacted the guys, sent a deposit and began studying the offers of Japanese auctions. But I was immediately warned that the model is not very common in Japan and the search could take a lot of time. In a couple of weeks, a couple of lots with my model passed, but they all went at some very high price. Despite the fact that it seemed to me that I had a not so small budget of 450 thousand rubles. In general, I observed this matter and went to see what private owners had in stock in Moscow and the region. Quite quickly I found a vigorous device in quite good condition. After that, I went and looked at it as a matter of form and bought the one I looked at first. At the same time, I saved a lot, almost a third of my budget. I immediately took it to winter storage and tweaked a few things for the season.
First impressions of the trip. You have to understand that I only drove about 10 km on December 23rd. People looked at me in surprise from the boxes. But it’s +7 on the street, the tires on the moto are new, I rode it like it was my own right away. At the same time, what I would like to note and share: I got a motorcycle with Mustang seats. This is fire. Mega convenient. I didn't even think that this could happen. I didn’t have a chance to try the stock seat while driving, but this Mustang definitely adds comfort. The steering wheel is still wide between the rows. In a couple of places I had to move with my legs, since it was not immediately clear how far there was from the car mirrors. Instinctively tried to squeeze it and make it narrower). As a result, I decided to install a narrower steering wheel in the spring. For example, from the same XVS 650 - it is 10-12 cm narrower. True, the reach towards the driver is 5 cm less. We’ll see, if anything happens, you can always change it back to stock. The mounting diameters are the same on all XVS, as well as the Royal Star line. The motorcycle is moving. He doesn’t just drive, he rushes very confidently from the very bottom. I didn’t shift above gear 3, but it’s already clear that for the city (dynamic start, overtaking, etc.) it’s definitely enough. The center of gravity is low, very low. After street and sports, this is unusual, but definitely very convenient. Low speed maneuvers do not pose any difficulties at all. They say that the stock chandelier does not provide good light. I didn’t understand, since I was driving along a lit road, I can’t say anything yet. Someone wrote that it vibrates a lot... Comrades, the 600k vibrates a lot on the track, turned into the red zone. And she still screams like crazy. And this is not vibration, this is the natural rhythm of the V-shaped engine. By the way, on the BMW F800R at high speeds the vibration through the footpegs is much greater and it is unpleasant. I cranked the XVS all the way up into 1st and 2nd gear a couple of times each. Yes, everything is fine there with vibrations. But, of course, you need to try all the cutoff gears on the track, this is already in the spring. I didn’t drive above 100 km/h; it was still winter and wet. The wind doesn’t blow it away, but all sorts of rubbish flies onto the helmet cheerfully. The lower the motor, the more will fly onto the visor from the road. And this motorcycle is low. Which does not cause any negative feelings. The front brake is kind of... weak. A taxi driver pulled out sharply in front of me. At a speed of about 10 km/h, I performed “progressive front brake braking”. I did it, but the spendthrift didn’t) It’s good that I remembered about the back one in time. The sad thing is unusually high, I had to rotate my hip joint and as a result I stepped on it with a flourish with the middle of my foot. It was there that the brake of this device, in fact, was discovered. I practically didn’t use the rear brake on Sorites in the city, but now I’ll have to. But this is just a feature of the class and a lot has already been said about this on the internet. As a result, I asked to install reinforced brake lines and good synthetic pads on the front and rear.
That's probably all of the brightest impressions. I can only add that this is a new and extremely pleasant feeling for me on a large motorcycle. And I’m riding in it, not on it... We’ll see in the season, but for now it feels like “wow, cool.” I don’t want to write more yet, since 10 km is still very little. If you say nothing at all.
I'm happy with the purchase. I thought that I should have tried this class of technology earlier. But everything has its time. If readers are interested, I will be ready to share new impressions in the next season.
I wish everyone smooth roads, a great holiday season and all the best in the New Year! If you have any questions, I’m always ready to answer them and tell you what I know.
I'm adding as I remember. I used to have a problem if I got a bike without a gear indicator. On the track cbr600 I got everyone asking to install it. There the box is such that it moves around imperceptibly, and in the heat of the race you don’t have time to keep an eye on it without the proper skill. but at least there is a tachometer) There is no indicator or tachometer. BUT! There is a suspicion that they are not needed. transmissions are mega long. Driving on the highway will tell.

Dimensions and weight
This is a large and heavy cruiser that only an experienced and fairly strong biker can handle. However, the seat height here is quite low, so if a person is of average height, this car will most likely suit him.
Yamaha XVS 950 Midnight Star has the following dimensions:
- curb weight – 278 kg;
- seat height – 675 mm;
- ground clearance - 155 mm;
- wheelbase – 1685 mm;
- height – 1080 mm;
- width – 1000 mm;
- length – 2435 mm;
- tank volume – 16.7 l.
It is important to remember that, despite the good tank volume, the fuel consumption is quite high. The car moves awkwardly, but in the right hands it is capable of doing what is expected of a cruiser - gliding smoothly along the highway, like an ocean liner on the waves.
Price
Prices for the Yamaha XVS 950 start at approximately 300,000 rubles. For this amount you can buy a motorcycle in good condition.
But there are also new models that have been mothballed. They are, of course, much more expensive. A new Yamaha in perfect condition without mileage, released about 2 years ago, will cost 950,000 rubles.
What can you say about consumables? Here are selected examples with approximate costs:
- Transparent, quickly removable windshield - 9-10 thousand rubles.
- Add. deflectors for butwing - 3-4 thousand rubles.
- Branded high windshield with fasteners – 22-23 thousand rubles.
- Diode turn signals – 7-8 thousand rubles.
- LED brake light – 11-12 thousand rubles.
- Tire pressure sensor with display – 20-21 thousand rubles.
- Inertial boost – 22-23 thousand rubles.
- Drink holder – 5-6 thousand rubles.
- Transforming backrest with folding trunk - 16-17 thousand rubles.
The important fact is that you can actually find a lot of things in large motorcycle centers. But some owners prefer to order parts from the USA or Japan. Here it’s more convenient for anyone.
Briefly about the model
The Yamaha XVS 950 is positioned by manufacturers as a model designed for entry-level and intermediate-level drivers.
The motorcycle has full-size dimensions, and this makes it similar to the XV1900, the older version. This fact gives him an advantage, since the owner does not have the impression that he owns some small-sized, cheap product.
Brake system
The Yamaha XVS 950 is not very powerful. Most motorcyclists complain - it feels like the cruiser is deprived in this regard. The developers installed weak hydraulic brakes on this 250-kilogram device.
It is recommended to immediately change the front caliper. The rear one can be left, but used exclusively in intensive acceleration mode.
But judging objectively, the brakes are standard for motorcycles of this class. It’s just that the vast majority of connoisseurs expect more from Yamaha.
The Yamaha XVS 950, unlike many of its competitors, does not tend to roll over and does not break. This gives the motorcycle owner the feeling that he is driving a heavy “classic” rather than a cruiser.
Production
The Yamaha XVS 950 Midnight Star has been produced from 2009 to the present day. The modernity of the motorcycle is felt. However, taking into account how much this bike costs, they prefer to buy used models. Such a car is sometimes no worse than a new copy. Especially if the motorcycle was purchased recently and was used extremely competently.
But it is important to understand that even if the car was purchased recently, but it was used in inappropriate conditions, it may already be in poor condition. And this is not always noticeable externally.

Until recently, Japanese motorcycle manufacturers ignored the serial bobber segment, preferring cruisers and rare choppers. At the same time, the concept of a city motorcycle, made in this undeservedly forgotten “form factor”, a compact, comfortable and stylish device equipped with an “airy” V-twin, is in demand today more than ever - which is confirmed by the growing popularity of Harley-Davidson Sportster family machines in all its impressive variety.
Last year, the Yamaha Motor concern presented its vision of a serial bobber, the XV950 model, which in the United States is simply and succinctly called Bolt. And, apparently, we have a 100% hit.
The popularity of the Harley-Davidson Sportster is a consequence not only of the low cost of motorcycles from this prolific family, but also of their versatility. On the one hand, it is an exclusively American product, with a distinctive style and typical design.
On the other hand, maneuverable, easy to operate and relatively economical Sportster series vehicles fit harmoniously into the cramped streets of cities of the Old World. Europeans appreciated the driving performance of these compact cars and, of course, the endless possibilities for their individualization. Oddly enough, over the last decade there has not been a single worthy alternative to the Harley-Davidson Sportster from Japanese manufacturers!.. The appearance of the Yamaha XV950 Bolt corrected this situation.
Conceptually, the XV950 model is almost identical to the American bestseller. Motorcycles of this rare type today are usually called serial bobbers, although such a phrase, of course, sounds as ridiculous as “serial custom” or “mass exclusive”.
In the generally accepted understanding of the word, a bobber is a radically lightweight cruiser, from which everything unnecessary and even a little more has been removed, in which such devices are similar to the canonical choppers. The fundamental differences begin in the steering geometry and in general in the design of the chassis, since a modern bobber is designed for everyday city driving, which primarily implies good maneuverability at low speeds.
With the return of classic fashion, bobbers have become one of the attributes of hipsters, metrosexuals and other strange individuals wearing square sunglasses, old-fashioned sneakers and untucked plaid shirts. Because a bobber is first and foremost about style, and only then about driving performance, technical characteristics and other insignificant little things.
From this position, the Yamaha XV950 Bolt hits the target: the motorcycle has a harmonious and simple appearance, in which there is no desire to change a single element... Although no, I would still retire the large muffler located on the right side of the device - here a “2 in 2” exhaust system would look much more appropriate!

Season on Java 638-0-00
We will tell you about how we spent the season on the JAVA model 638-0-00. What makes the new model different? Run-in beyond the instructions Electrical equipment, ignition: no defects Wishes based on experience Since January of last year, a new model of the Czechoslovak motorcycle began to arrive in the Soviet Union - YAVA-350-638-0-00, which finally replaced the transitional YAVA-638-5 from the assembly line. I was lucky enough to become one of the first owners of the new product, to get acquainted with its character and behavior in operation. In my opinion, the new model noticeably wins in design, which has become more modern and more attractive to the eye. During your first rides, the driver will appreciate the wide and comfortable saddle. He will also like the peculiar casing behind the seat - in addition to being decorative, it can have a utilitarian function: for example, I place a liter container of oil and a spare chamber there. The gas tank seems to have become larger, at least in the rear it is much wider, and this is inconvenient, but essentially it hasn’t added anything, not...
Recommendations for owners of heavy motorcycles
I do this... The author of the proposed material is engineer S. NAUMOV from the city of Irbit, an experienced motorcycle tourist who has repeatedly participated in long-distance and difficult test and tourist trips on Ural motorcycles. His recommendations, prompted and tested by experience, will undoubtedly be useful to all owners of heavy motorcycles. And maybe not only them. For ease of presentation, I have divided my proposals by topic. And I'll start with electrical equipment. To facilitate the installation of two series-connected ZMT-6 batteries, you need to cut a 30 mm wide ring from an old motorcycle camera and put it on two cans at once. Or better yet, two such rings, placing them at the top and bottom of the jars. Rice. 1. Connecting the terminals of two batteries with a plate, installing a rubber ring 30 mm wide. I advise you to connect the “+” terminals of one battery and the “-” terminals with another plate made of stainless steel or tinned copper (Fig. 1), and the terminals from which...
How to achieve smooth brake action on a Java motorcycle
“I can’t seem to get smooth brake action on my Java motorcycle. Braking occurs jerkily, although the pads and cables are in good condition. What could be the reason?" - asks K. Lobachev named after the city of Kolomna. Jerks when braking motorcycles and cars are typical for those cases when the brake drums have an irregular (oval, faceted, etc.) shape of the working surface. The pads are pressed against it unevenly - stronger in areas located closer to the drum axis, weaker - in areas farther from it. In motorcycle (spoke) wheels, the shape of the drum is usually disrupted by strong impacts on various obstacles or due to uneven tension of the spokes (most often after reassembling the wheel ).To eliminate drum deformation, first adjust the tension of the spokes, and if this is not enough, grind the working surface of the drum on a lathe. The best results are obtained by processing the drum in the assembled wheel. If the machine doesn’t call...
New. Minsk MMVZ-3.111
Review of the new product On the eve of the October holiday, the team of the Minsk Motorcycle and Bicycle Plant produced the first industrial batch of new road motorcycles "Minsk", designated MMVZ-3.111 *, and from the first day of this year (1974) began their serial production. (* This designation, corresponding to the currently accepted classification, is deciphered as follows: MMVZ - Minsk Motorcycle and Bicycle Plant, number 3 - motorcycle class (125 cm3), the first unit - road type. 11 - serial number of the model produced by the plant.) When developing a new model, the designers were faced with the task of creating a motorcycle with a modern look, more reliable and durable compared to its predecessor, the M-106. I think that motorcyclists will appreciate the external shape. Let’s just say that they were chosen as a result of a lot of work, which was carried out by the designers of the “plant together with specialists from VNIIMotoprom, after a thorough study of modern domestic ...
Black and white
One of the features of the XV950 Bolt model is the highest quality of workmanship and assembly, almost at the level of hand-made products, which distinguishes Yamaha’s new product from its famous competitor, which is frankly crooked in places and requires finishing with a file.
The motorcycle leaves the impression of a complete machine, surprising with the elaboration of the smallest details, which, however, is typical not only for the XV950, but also for the newest naked MT-07 as well. As usual, Yamaha artists paid a lot of attention to the design of the engine - and this is already a stone in the garden of Japanese competitors, some of whom are not too worried about the unprepossessing power plants, simply covering them with decorative plastic shields on all sides.
The only disappointment is the paucity of color options for the XV950 Bolt, which is available only in black and white colors in both the Russian and American markets. True, at the same time, residents of North America have the opportunity to buy a motorcycle in the R-Spec version, which differs from the base model in original colors (Matte Gray and Camo Green), more advanced rear shock absorbers with expansion chambers, a seat and mirrors.
The top modification of the XV950 model will not be officially supplied to Russia. The motorcycle is very compact: the Bolt is only 15 cm longer than the naked FZ-8! The seat height is “children’s” 690 mm, which removes all restrictions on the minimum height of the rider. However, tall pilots will feel a bit cramped behind the wheel of the new Yamaha, and all colleagues “over 180 cm tall” complained about the inconvenience.
The compact and quite informative dashboard fits perfectly into the motorcycle’s surroundings, however, difficulties arise with the readability of the dim LCD display in bright daylight...
Also, don't expect the XV950 to be much fun as a travel device. After all, this is a city motorcycle, and its reasonable “limit” for daily use is 400–450 km. Already after 100 km of continuous driving, an irresistible desire arises to stop and perform several spectacular movements from the morning exercise program.
So, for example, while crossing the Mojave Desert along the American highway CA-62, at the end of the first hour of driving, I really regretted that that day I had chosen the Bolt and not the Stryker (the motorcycle fleet in the USA consisted of motorcycles of these two models)…
Description Yamaha Star Bolt R-Spec 2014
The description of the Yamaha Star Bolt R-Spec 2014 motorcycle is in the queue for publication of the article. Announcement: Today, for almost every new motorcycle that comes into being, marketers strive to carve out their own niche. This one is a road sport, this one is a recreational enduro. But what class should we include a motorcycle that has a little bit of everything? A good bike should have a reliable engine, comfortable ergonomics and simple controls...
Yamaha Star Bolt R-Spec is a motorcycle rarely sold in Russia. Despite the fact that good models of motorcycles have a very respectable price, and the season for their use is relatively short, the motorcycle market is developing rapidly. And if you believe the words of dealers, then some models of recently released motorcycles are selling like hot cakes at the beginning of the season, and the models brought to Russia are clearly not enough to fully satisfy consumer demand.
A motorcycle has long ceased to be an alternative to a car, and the times when this equipment was bought only because there was not enough money for a full-fledged car are forgotten. Nowadays, two-wheelers can be called technological marvels in many cases, and their cost can be compared with that of prestigious cars.
Many people have started buying motorcycles for hobby purposes as riding or even collecting them has become a good pastime for many people. Many motorcycles, for example the Yamaha Star Bolt R-Spec, whose technical characteristics allow the model to be called a prestigious brand, are in demand among both beginners and experienced motorcyclists.
Motorcycles with an engine capacity of 942 cc / 58-cu-in. see, appeared as a result of long work of inventors who sought to create a model that was not inferior in characteristics to other versions of the motorcycle. In some cases, these models are not only not inferior, but also ahead of other motorcycles, as they have minimal fuel consumption and other excellent parameters.
Motorcycles with an engine capacity of more than 400 kb. cm, which includes the Yamaha Star Bolt R-Spec - this category of motorcycles simply cannot claim the title of “motorcycle for a beginner.” On the contrary, this is already a serious technique that requires certain control of motorcycle equipment with a smaller engine capacity. Yes, she attracts more attention, she is the most beautiful, fast, interesting and there is a huge selection of models. But as power increases, the weight of the motorcycle inevitably increases. In this class you are unlikely to find motorcycles lighter than 180 kg, unless they are the latest motorcycle models.
Modifications and competitors
Yamaha XV950 Bolt R-spec.
Yamaha XV950 Bolt C-spec.
Yamaha SCR950.
In addition to the main BOLT modification, the user can choose:
- Bolt R-spec. The main thing that distinguishes this bike is the rear shock absorbers with remote reservoirs. The latter are painted gold.
- Bolt C-spec. This version appeared in 2015 and lived on the assembly line for only a year. The fuel tank is one liter smaller, there are clip-ons, and instead of a saddle for the second number there is a plug. Another name for the same model is Racer.
- Bolt Scrambler. The scrambler subspecies does not need any special recommendations. Differences from the main version are spoked wheels. But the shape of the saddle has also been changed. The only version that received different symbols in the name abbreviation, which is why it mistakenly refers to another model. Full name: Yamaha SCR950.
The bike has no competitors. However, Honda's attempt to oppose it with its half-liter model CMX500 Rebel looks quite funny.
Comfort
The saddle is comfortable. In the front part it rises smoothly, and in the rear part it rises sharply. However, no pronounced angle is formed. If a person is already accustomed to such seats, he will be comfortable. But if you like smooth, straight saddles, you may encounter inconveniences at first.
The mirrors are average in size, but comfortable to look at. There is no backrest behind the passenger seat. So, if you ride with a passenger, then only at low speed
It is important to consider that the car accelerates quickly for a cruiser. Do not forget that, unlike the same road motorcycles, not to mention a motocross motorcycle or a sportbike, this model has an impressive mass
Chassis
It’s fair to say that the Yamaha XVS 950 has a very successful design. The handling of the motorcycle was not spoiled even by budget suspension components and a stretched, low silhouette.
The features of this model are a not very modern monoshock absorber deeply hidden in the system, as well as a fork with 41 mm diameter feathers swollen with metal linings. But, nevertheless, the motorcycle copes with potholes and holes easily. The suspension works well.
Also, when talking about the characteristics of the Yamaha XVS 950, it must be noted that this motorcycle has excellent geometry. So it's a pleasure to drive around corners. He flies into them very easily and controlled. The tilt angle is limited only by the low-mounted footrests.
