Yamaha YZ 250 F review – technical specifications of the legend

Yamaha YBR250 (2007-2011)Yamaha YS250 Fazer

Yamaha YBR 250 road bike model

appeared in 2005 in Brazil, sold under the name
Yamaha Fazer YS250
(differences from YBR in appearance, instrument panel and the presence of a rear disc brake). Later, the model also began to be produced in China and subsequently sold in European countries. Since 2011, the YBR250 has been available in the Japanese market (even though the motorcycle is owned by Yamaha, it is sold in Japan as an import model made in China).

Compared to the YBR125, the new Yamaha YBR250 has become slightly larger in size and also received a number of technical differences:

  • Engine
    . Volume 249 cm³, maximum power - 21 hp, torque - 20.5 Nm.
  • Intake system
    . From the very beginning, the model was equipped with electronic fuel injection.
  • Pendants
    . Instead of a dual shock absorber at the rear, the YBR250 gets a more modern monoshock unit.
  • Wheels
    . Compared to the YBR125, the YBR250 uses 17′ wider wheels.
  • Brakes
    . The rear brake still remained drum, but the front brake disc was increased to 282 mm and received a 2-piston caliper.
  • Fuel tank
    . Compared to the YBR125, it has increased to 19.2 liters, which is comparable to the volume of larger cubic capacity models.

2011 was the last year of production of the Yamaha YBR 250 for the European market, after which it became available in the Japanese market. Currently, the model is presented in sufficient quantities at Japanese auctions at an average price of $2,500.

The main competitors of the Yamaha YBR250 in the class:

  • Honda CBF250 / Honda VTR 250

Modifications

In parallel with this model, the design department was developing a more cubic model (first yz400f, then yz450f), so no modifications were envisaged for the crossover.

Since 2015, the motorcycle has been equipped with a lighter throttle lever, which significantly reduces the load on the driver’s hand during long rides.

Design of Yamaha YZ 250 F

Minimal body kit, updated carburetor and engine - this is what the YZ 250 F looks like.

The Yamaha YZ 250 F is a very worthy representative of the modern family of cross-country motorcycles.

To increase permissible speeds, everything is assembled on a wrapped aluminum frame with a minimum number of welding points. The latter also affected the rigidity of the structure. But also for strength, an additional double-sided beam is used.

Suspension

  • Front suspension made on the basis of an inverted fork with a working stroke of 310 mm.

    Yamaha still puts its proven coil spring fork up front, bucking the air suspension trend in motocross.

  • The rear axle is supported by a pendulum monoshock absorber. Compared to the front, the stroke is increased - 315 mm.

    The rear features a fully adjustable KYB shock absorber.

An interesting feature of the motorcycle is the ability to adjust the suspension both front and rear , allowing you to adjust the clearances for a specific track as accurately and comfortably as possible. What is rare for motocross - in this model, an important role is given to softening bumps and uneven road surfaces. The KYB system, already familiar from previous models, has been reworked and further optimized.

Peculiarities

The Yamaha YZ 250 F is designed according to the “nothing superfluous” principle.

  • Another feature that distinguishes the sneaker from its peers is the ability to adjust the height of the handlebars for a specific athlete.
  • The seat has also been redesigned, it has become more ergonomic, and new materials used in manufacturing significantly reduce the accumulation of dirt, allowing a person to move freely while moving.

    The seat “fits” onto the gas tank recessed underneath it, allowing the driver to move forward as much as possible when cornering.

Reviews

Reviews about Yamaha YBR 250:

Expand Collapse

The YBR-250 is a great machine. I myself drove it a couple of times and owned the Honda equivalent (CBF-250) for a year. But in terms of aesthetics, engine, gearbox, I liked the Yamaha better. But it was more expensive than CBF. An excellent moto for beginners. Economical, easy to maintain. And also an excellent motorcycle for those who no longer need more adrenaline and just want a workhorse for all occasions. 120 handles perfectly, turns confidently, maximum speed is about 150. Uphill 2m also handles well. If you want a little more power and a more “fun” bike, then there is the VTR-250. Already 2 cylinders and 33 hp. + More Made in Japan. But dear infection.

Regarding the 250 cc: the car is very good, indeed, but for the kind of money they want for it, no one in Russia will ever buy it. It was officially imported to Ukraine and cost about $5,500. I told Tsoi that he bought one for himself. Now it is not officially sold in Ukraine either, it is very expensive and rarely bought.

in general, this is a completely different Yobr, completely different, more technically advanced.

Flaws

Reviews from people who have had the opportunity to ride this motorcycle do not note any particular shortcomings. Mainly noted:

  • weak front brake;
  • It behaves unsteadily during sharp turns.

But on the other hand, every second copy from the “motorcycle” category has the same shortcomings.

In a picturesque place.

On the slope.

At the car wash.

In garages.

In the country.

and dignity

The situation with advantages is different. Noted:

  • comfortable saddle and fit;
  • adjustable suspension and long stroke;
  • low weight with relatively large dimensions;
  • and, of course, power and good dynamic characteristics .

Bike features

Here are the main features of the model:

  • rarity while maintaining relevance;
  • exclusivity in its niche;
  • convenience and balance.

The Yamaha UZ 250 can be called a legend, because such motorcycles are rare. Probably, the model is primarily suitable for those people who prefer to purchase equipment that has been proven over the years. After all, this model will soon be tested by half a century.

Q: WHAT CAN YOU DO TO MAKE THE YZ250F BETTER?

A: There are two things you can do to make the 2020 YZ250F the best bike for you.

(1) Transfer. Gear reserve 13/50. If you like Travis Preston on the map we suggest lengthening the powerband, you could also try going up one tooth in the rear to 51. This made the power feel more aggressive.

(2) Air chamber. We drilled two 1-1/4-inch holes in the top of the box lid using a shovel. This extra air to the intake gave the engine a stronger top end and more revs. Every rider loved the extra boost of extra power. Since the airbox is located above the gas tank, the air filter stays fairly clean.

The only change Yamaha has made other than the BNG is the use of a rubber bushing inside the air filter.

Q: WILL YZ250F KAYABA COMPONENTS STILL CHARGE?

A: Yes. The Kayaba shocks and SSS forks are as good as they come. The basic setup is great for any rider who jumps on their bike. Not having to chase settings makes life much easier for the average person. This Kayaba setup is so good that many other manufacturers have tried to replicate it. For 2022, Kawasaki switched to Kayaba components for its KX250, which is an exact representation of the YZ250F's suspension setup.

Q: WHAT DO WE LIKE?

A: List of likes:

(1) Suspension. Kayaba SSS components are great for a wide variety of riders. (2) Engine. We like that the YZ250F has enough cornering without us having to abuse the clutch. We can just turn on the gas and switch off. (3) Wi-Fi. Being able to tune the engine's power curve using the Yamaha Power Tuner app is great. Other manufacturers should adopt this technology. (4) Clutch. The clutch pull is so soft that it feels like the plates would fry midway. The clutch lasts longer than any other Japanese models. (5) Dual mode switch. We love that we can switch cards on the fly. (6) durability. The YZ250F's wheels, engine and chassis are built to last.

Q: CAN I SELECT POWERBAND TO DISCONNECT NEXT?

A: The YZ250F's powerband can be adjusted to your liking from your smartphone. Yamaha's built-in Wi-Fi system is connected to the YZ250F's ECU. The free GYTR Power Tuner app connects to your smartphone via a Wi-Fi signal. From there you can download one of three pre-programmed maps and additional maps at www.yamahamotosports.com/motocross/pages/yamaha-power-tuner-smart-phone-app.com or make custom maps. Understand that Yamaha designed its Power Tuner parameters to be fool proof. In other words, you can't make it so skinny that the bike explodes. We encourage every Yamaha owner to experiment with the app. If you want to understand the app better, the link we provided has many informative videos on using, sending, receiving, editing and sharing cards.

So, what card do we end up with? Same thing we did last year - Travis Preston's 2019 YZ250F map. this can be downloaded from the Yamaha website under the 2018/19 “YZ250F” TP/Low-to-Mid Map”. This allowed the power to go far enough into the rev range to engage the next gear in the power band. This allowed MXA

testers perform better jumps and use less clutch, which ultimately makes the bike easier to ride.

The dual-mode engine map switch, located on the left side of the steering wheel, allows you to program two maps. Out of the box the stock card, which is all zeros, is programmed on both cards. Know that Map 1 is displayed when the blue light is off, and Map 2 works when the blue light is on. Yamaha has made it so that you can also switch between the two maps on the fly. You don't have to stop to switch.

The YZ250F's engine isn't the most powerful in its class; however, it is most suitable for the average rider.

Design component

Like all models above the designated line, this variation combines a sporty design and a classic fit. Therefore, this appearance is approved by both the audience with exotic views on vehicles and people with strict preferences. Without thinking twice, you can also notice other equally prominent advantages of the motorcycle. The engine volumes, which start from 300 cubic meters, immediately catch your eye.

All this diversity is complemented by a headlight made in the Japanese style, somewhat similar to a naked one, which also meets the parameters of minimalism and is not inferior in technical characteristics to even more serious models. In addition, the voluminous front body kit with chopped lines should also be highlighted. At the same time, the appearance of the bike also highlights some of its shortcomings. The most visible of them is the not at all muscular wheels, which indicate the relatively low power of the vehicle. It is also unlikely that you will be able to become a racer on it, as evidenced by the rear-view mirrors, which are located too high for increased visibility and driver safety.

Speaking about the color component, it all depends on the preferences of the owner of the motorcycle. The original version is only available in a limited number of colors, the main one being “space violet”. Often people like to call it more simply, namely “eggplant”. At the same time, no one forbids the rider to tune the purchase later, because it is open to various kinds of modifications.

Comparison of original spare parts and fakes

The YAMAHA Fazer 250 must be purchased exclusively from the original manufacturer. This is the only way you can get a full guarantee, free service, and confidence in the quality of the purchased product. If the purchase of a product item occurs through an official dealer, then he must have all supporting documents and, if necessary, be ready to provide them to the consumer. For example, this includes the company https://www.yamaha-dealer.ru/.

However, not only the motorcycle itself should be purchased from used manufacturers, but we also recommend purchasing spare parts from them. Of course, you can always buy a cheaper analogue, but the quality of its creation remains in question. Moreover, such manufacturers often take goods from China, where hardly anyone will agree to guarantee the replacement of a spare part or repair it for free. Even if the buyer is not involved in the breakdown, he will not be able to prove anything.

That is why, to summarize the above, we recommend that you contact exclusively time-tested and documented companies. As for the motorcycle itself, it is an average representative of the motorcycle market and copes well with its tasks. As such, no shortcomings were identified. Thus, we recommend the vehicle for purchase.

Appearance

The YBR 250 is noticeably different from the previous model. All details (pegs, buttons on the steering wheel, levers) are arranged more thoughtfully. A stiffer suspension allows for more aggressive driving in urban environments. The motorcycle has alloy wheels and Pirelli tires. The engine responds quite quickly to the movement of the throttle, which is facilitated by the injection system.

The only downside of the Yamaha YBR 250 is that it is not for tall people. Thanks to the wheelbase of 1360 mm, it is possible to maneuver between cars. The precise operation of the front brake ensures a smooth stop in any road condition.
